RHP Taylor Clarke (4 1/3 IP, 8 R, 9 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks) retuned to action after a short injury list stint (sore toe), though he may wish he’d taken a few extra days. After retiring the first three hitters (3 groundouts), things went haywire after consecutive infield singles to commence the 2nd inning.

A day after scaring Brewers’ backers by exiting early with apparent hamstring tightness, DH/OF Garrett Mitchell was right back atop the lineup, grounding out and singling before exiting after 4 innings this time.

Sounds’ Extras:

• Despite the shutout, the Sounds did manage to strand 11 baserunners on the back of 5 hits, 5 walks and a hit-by-pitch.
• Top starting pitcher RHP Chad Patrick (3 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 5 Ks) was due for some work, so came in late with Nashville trailing 8-0, giving up two doubles and hitting a batter. Maybe we should keep starting him!

Friday’s outlook: With the Sounds staring at a 2-1 series deficit, LHP Aaron Ashby is scheduled to start, aiming to bounce back after yielding 7 earned runs in his last outing.

Biloxi continued its season turn-around which began back on June 6, boosting its record to 13-6 since that point. 1B Zavier Warren had been heating up before a placement on the Development List, resuming his surge in his first game back: 2-for-3, triple, all 3 RBIs for the Shuckers.

Conceding only 2 runs took some effort and clutch pitching, as RHP innings-eaters Brett Wichrowski and TJ Shook combined to allow 11 baserunners over 6 2/3 IP. The opposition went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position for the game.

While Warren collected the biggest hits of the game, Shook got some help from 3B Brock Wilken for the most important out: gunning down the potential tying run at home in the top of the 7th inning.

Shuckers’ Extras:

• With RHPs Craig Yoho and Blake Holub covering the late innings, we can sleep well with any lead: they retired all 7 batters faced, 4 via strikeout.
• Dylan O’Rae had a productive day as DH, singling twice, walking and stealing a base, though he was also picked off.

Friday’s outlook: Ever-exciting 22-year old RHP Logan Henderson seeks his fourth Win in his fourth start at the AA level, having gone 5 1/3 scoreless innings with 6 Ks last week. Biloxi leads the series 2-1 at this point.

Starting RHP KC Hunt (5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 Ks) was effective even without his best stuff (75 pitches, 46 strikes), conceding a single run in his final inning to exit the 1-1 ballgame.

Eight Timber Rattlers collected at least one hit, while the 9th drew a walk, but the key was stringing 3 hits together with one out in the bottom of the 7th inning, starting with Ramon Rodriguez’s double.

SS Gregory Barrios, who tripled but was thrown out at home in the 5th inning, produced the sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 7th inning to Wisconsin back the lead at 3-2.

Timber Rattlers’ Extras:

• South Bend gave themselves a real chance by throwing out Wisconsin baserunners to end the 7th and 8th innings, but RHPs Aaron Rund and Yerlin Rodriguez shut the door, Rodriguez working around a leadoff 9th inning single.
• 3B Eduardo Garcia’s 3 singles lifted his small High-A sample batting average to .423 and OPS to 1.000, as he makes a strong case to return to AA Biloxi.

Friday’s outlook: RHP Will Rudy is scheduled to start with Wisconsin still trailing the series 2-1.

Credit starting RHP Enniel Cortez (the youngest player in the Carolina League) with navigating through traffic, in particular escaping a 1st and 3rd, nobody out situation in the 4th inning. Issuing 3 walks is rare for Cortez, who’d only allowed 4 free passes in 28 1/3 innings entering the game, but his final numbers were solid: 4 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 4 Ks.

The Mudcats are clearly missing INFs Juan Baez (injured list) and Cooper Pratt (spiked a few days ago), but may have won this game if they’d pulled the plug on RH reliever Brailin Rodriguez (1 2/3 IP, 4 R) a bit earlier. Six of the first nine Hillcats reached base against Rodriguez (triple, 2 doubles, 2 BB, 1 HBP), as a 3-1 advantage turned into a 5-4 deficit by the 6th inning.

The Mudcats’ 6 thru 9 hitters were the most productive, collecting 6 hits, 2 RBIs, 3 stolen bases and 2 runs scored, led by 3B Miguel Briceno (double, single, SB), 1B Satchell Norman (double, walk, RBI, SB) and 2B Jose Acosta (2 singles, RBI, SB).

Carolina had the leadoff man aboard in the 6th, 7th and 8th innings, but was unable to push the tying run across.

Mudcats’ Extras:

• After allowing a run-scoring double to the first batter he faced, 22-year old RHP Jose Nova was solid in his Low-A debut: 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K.
• RHP Aidan Maldonado continues to be Manager Nick Stanley’s most reliable closer, going 2 scoreless innings with 3 Ks.
• Something to watch (for a possible injury): Reliable veteran catcher David Garcia exited after grounding into a double play in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Friday’s outlook: RHP Josh Knoth seeks a repeat of his last start (5 2/3 scoreless innings with 7 Ks), with Carolina needing a win to even the series 2-2.

Final: ACL Brewers 11, ACL Dodgers 5

After dropping 6 of 7 games, it had to feel great for the ACL Crew to win in dominant fashion.

A five-run 4th inning catapulted the ACL Brewers to a 6-3 lead which would hold up from there. The stat-masters claim that the three biggest win probability swings all occurred in that frame, including the 2-run double by 2B Josh Adamczewski (2-for-4, double, walk, 2 RBIs, SB) to put the Brewers in front 4-3 and 2-run homer by C Edgardo Ordonez to add extra cushion.

SS Tyler Rodriguez and 3B Eric Bitonti (1.019 OPS!) also had solid games, each going 2-for-5 but with Rodriguez smacking a 3-run blast in the top of the 9th inning (his first homer of 2024).

On the mound, the team welcomed 4th round 2023 draft pick 21-year old RHP Jason Woodward for his organizational debut after a long injury recovery. He started and yielded one run, while 17-year old RHP Melvin Hernandez (4 IP, 3 R (1 ER), 4 H, 2 BB, 4 Ks) and 19-year old Jesus Flores (3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K) did the heavy lifting.

Young Dominican RHP Christopher Peralta (turned 17 mid-May) continues to shine in three inning stints. 3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 HB, 4 K, 2 R (unearned). DSL Crew Uno trail 4-2 in the middle innings …Later in the contest the scorers credited Peralta with 1 ER. 17-year-old Venezuelan OF Angel Gonzalez with his marquis DSL moment today. Bottom of the 8th. 2 on. 2 out. Smacks a 3-run go-ahead bomb to give the suddenly charging DSL Cerveceros an 8-5 lead! That lead would hold for Gonzalez's fellow 18-year-old teammate and countryman RHP Argenis Aparicio who closed the game out.

Aparicio has been quite solid for the DSL Brewers Dos showing improved numbers and results across the board in his second DSL season with the organization. Today, he did the heavy-lifting allowing for the comeback and holding it down to secure the 'W': 5 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 ER. He did throw two scored WP in there but, hey, you gotta keep those young opponents on their heels! The DSL Dos moved to 10-7 on the season. Quite the run they are on. – Joseph Zarr
