Assuming a loss after the celebrations last night. Hopefully Henderson abstained.

I would assume that an hour of spraying champagne and a few glasses aren't going to dramatically affect anyone's performance today.

If that's all they did, then I agree

If Sal starts and goes 3-4 with a nuke then he is allowed to drink whenever he wants moving forward. He seemed to be having a good time last night.

Helps that it's a night game.

Last nights vibe at the game was awesome. Pirates fans for the first time seeing Miz were commenting they couldn’t even see the ball.  We were sitting 1st base side just past the dugout.  Was curious to why McGill was coming in with a 4 run lead then noticed the Braves had taken the lead. Maybe that had something to do with it.

tonight’s game hopefully will be just as enjoyable

And he hadn't pitched in a week. Had to get him out there at some point.

I will take a win so I can post something to the Magic # thread related to zero.

Magic number of 6 for a top two playoff spot

It's not likely to matter, but going down a rabbit hole, the race for the tiebreaker between MKE and ATL is kind of interesting, and is unlikely to be decided before the last day of the season (ergo, make the magic number 6 and be done with it)

We were 3-3 head to head, The next criteria is division record: ATL is 32-17, and Brewers are 31-16. If that finishes in a dead heat, the next criteria is conference record - that's also extremely close with Brewers at 65-41 and ATL and 65-42. Then comes conference record after the All-Star Break - I am not going to look that up,

The magic number is already zero

It's ok. There is some logic to being stubborn about clinching an outright championship. He knows he's being pedantic, though

Based on the MLB's established clinching rules, there is simply zero logic here. There is no longer such thing as a "shared" division championship or a Game 163. Choosing not to acknowledge rules doesn't mean they don't exist.

I absolutely agree, This is my view, too, But, we can allow for the stubborn playfulness of posters making a point that isn't about the rules - "outright" is better than winning by tiebreak. No one disagrees with that, I don't think. It's just that 99.999% of people don't consider that more important than clinching at all.

It does happen - seems like mostly in football - that losers of tiebreaks do take (somewhat dubious) credit for co-championships.

It is unlikely that the Brewers would win a tiebreaker against the Braves  even in the highly unlikely event that the teams end in a tie. And yes I am intentionally stacking unlikely on top of unlikely.

For the teams to end up tied the Brewers would have to blow a 5,5 game lead in 11 games. That would require the “wrong” result in exactly 16 of 21 games. That would be a collapse similar to the 1964 Phillies who lost 10 games in a row to blow a 6 game lead with 12 games left. But 3 of those games were head to head against the Cardinals, who ended up winning the pennant, making the possibility of making up the deficit a little less improbable.

For the Brewers and Braves to end up tied, the Brewers would have to lose exactly 6 more games than the Braves the rest of the way.  That would mean the Braves going 10-0 to the Brewers 5-6 or the Brewers going 0-11 to the Braves 6-5, or some point in between. But, in any event, those 6 extra losses would probably flip the tiebreakers which are currently close in the Braves favor.

For the Brewers to win a tiebreaker their losses would have to fall just right. For example, in the Braves going 11-0 scenario, if the Brewers won the 5 games against the Pirates and Cardinals and lost the other 6, the Brewers would win the division tiebreaker at 36-16 to the Braves 35-17. But if just one of the losses were to come against one of the Central teams, the Brewers would lose the intraleague tiebreaker.

So, I’m just going to ignore the tiebreaker and count down the magic number from 6 to 0. The odds of the Brewers winning a tiebreaker over the Braves may not be astronomical, but they are several times larger than the probability of the Brewers losing the division were 10 days ago.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Murphy also considers 4 runs on the road a save situation though I think Megill was going to throw the 9th either way for the reason you said

It probably won't end up mattering but if it does end up mattering it won't be good for the Brewers because if that tiebreaker comes into play it will almost certainly mean the Braves have the tiebreaker because they closed out the year strong and the Brewers faded
