  1. No-one jammed our guys intentionally - they were far too much in control to even think about doing that. And I doubt very much if MJ's retaliation was intentiomal. This is the minors pitches just get away from guys.
  2. I'm not entirely sure of this, but I think I heard it mentioned that Bausher & Sarfate were splitting starts. i.e. game 3 Sarfate starts Bausher gives long relief. Game 8 Bausher starts Sarfate long relief etc. Seems weird to me but I'm sure there is some method to the madness. For what its worth Bausher looked the pick of the pair in game 3.
  3. for all those more awake than I am - we haven't got a new pitcher - I just can't spell Novinsky
  4. For those night owls who can't wait, the offensive highlights were a 3 run homer by Ryan Knox and a solo homer and a double from Kade. Barney ran from first to home on a single to give the insurance run. There weren't many defensive highlights, but the pitching was good, especially Ford and Novisco. The rest of the defense was distinctly wobbly. Surprisingly, from what I'd read, Prince looked absolutely solid at first and did well on several erratically thrown balls from Weeks. Only the second time I've seen Gwynn and he didn't have much chance to show his defense, but from what little I've seen so far his arm seems inferior to Krynzels. But a great start and they kept it exciting until the end, I'm hoping for a lot more nights like tonight.
  5. Neither Mike Adams nor Kade have lost in a playoff game this year.
  6. It simply doesn't get any better than this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  7. A really nice triple by Dave, keeping going what he started in the last game against Birmingham. Maybe the SLUMP is over. Also a really good crowd compared to the earlier games(though homer would still have had no trouble finding a seat)
  8. lost 3-2 after a great rally at the bottom of the 9th. A wonderful game despite the loss. Even more respect for Brandon's glove, two wonderful plays saving Barney and JJ from big errors. Sadly he was in for the bunt when Corey made the throwing error that led to their first run. Hendrickson looked really good and the game was a real nail biter. Win or lose I won't complain if there are a few more like this.
  9. The worst thing about this playoff series has been the extremely low numbers at ALL the games. Sadly there is NO chance it will sell out. Its football season and in Alabama nothing else matters. Please come and add to our numbers. The players deserve every cheering voice.
  10. I find the Barons' decision to start Pacheco in the playoffs on 3 days rest somewhat less dubious than our own treatment of Jason Shelley earlier this year. He started the game, pitched a couple of innings and then there was more than an hours rain delay. We sent him back out to pitch 2 more innings after the delay in a meaningless mid season game. Can I expect retrospective calls from Al for heads to roll? Weirdly enough, some players, managers and organizations see the Minor Leagues as something more than glorified batting practice. Perhaps there is a tiny chance that these managers are actually fair judges of their own players recovery rates and abilities? P.S. I saw that Noochie catch today - it wasn't quite Willie Mays, but it was magnificent and it broke the Barons hearts at a time when they looked set to come back into it. He really does deserve to be a bit higher in the power 50http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  11. A night for unsung heroes! The Jeff Housman Smoke and Mirrors show was genuine big time magic 7 innings 2 hits 0 runs. Brandon Gemoll with a run and rbi. Chris Barnwell some fine plays at 3B and a superb bunt single that brought Gemoll home for the second run and dented Birmingham spirits. Brad Nelson, forget the lack of hits, he was doing Dave Krynzel impersonations in the outfield. Two great catches, one of which he turned into a double play.(If I ever criticized his defense - please please please forgive me!) Everyone played hard and contributed in some way. A very different team from last night. Perhaps game MVP should really go to the non-playing Mike Kremblas for starting the 'brawl' last night??
  12. "At least he was actually trying to win!" "Has there ever been an intelligent fan who believed a player was trying to get out? What a silly statement." Lets not let the fact that the original comment was made in the context of Dave's defense ruin a great cliche No-one doubts that EVERY player tries to hit the baseball. Sadly , unless you're as myopic as Al, trying to win actually involves a few other minor details, like defense, running out plays and most of all ,keeping your head in the game. Having 3 valiant swings at a passing ball doesn't actually constitute trying to win a team game. I'd risk a small wager that Mike Kremblas was sent out tonight wih instructions from Frank to start that end of game semi-brawl. A desperate attempt to light a fire under a team that has shown little appetite for the game for several weeks. Birmingham aren't any more talented than we are, at the minute they simply 'want it' more than we do. Trying to win involves 'wanting it' just as much as it involves not getting out deliberately. I'll forego comments like 'has there ever been an intelligent fan who thought the game only involved trying to hit'
  13. Hard to find much positive to say, having sat through this whole sorry spectacle. Dave Krynzel made two absolutely breathtaking catches at the wall, one of them in heavy rain. At least he was actually trying to win! That's it really, unless you count Frank Kremblas's obvious belief that Brad Nelson is the next Ricky Henderson. Oh yes - Mike Kremblas started a bench clearing, pimp slapping contest at the end of the game. Maybe that'll get us fired up for tomorrow night.
  14. Any chance of him getting sent back down - we could do with someone on the team who has started shaving! Only joking, if anyone has earnt his shot at the majors D Lee certainly has. What can it cost Milwaukee to push him up there and see what happens? Are they worried it might hurt their wildcard chances??????????
  15. I should add on the positive side that Dave got a couple of hits. Whether this is due to the new way he is gripping the bat or the presence of Brewers senior management, we'll never know. Lets hope it continues
  16. Lost 7-1 in a truly awful display. Lovers of good fiction will appreciate the scorer who kept our error count to 3.
  17. 20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing for a fan. We were all against the bunt, on the principle of not giving a pitcher who was starting to struggle an easy out. But I'm sure we'd have been instant converts to the Kremblas plan if Dave or Brad had got the job done. One interesting aspect was how Chatanooga rated our various prospects on the night. They pitched to Dave, even though 1st base was empty. After striking him out, they intentionally walked JJ to get at Brad.
  18. I'm not sure how I failed to make this clear: Its the BOTTOM of the 16 th - you are one run behind (if you were a run ahead the game would now be over ) Your only concern is to score one or two runs. One will send it to the 17th , but you have no pitcher. Two will end the game. All higher totals are irrelevant
  19. I know this board usually restricts itself to questions of grand strategy rather than more mundane tactics, but this one produced some lively argument amongst those of us still there at midnight last night and I'd be interested in a few extra opinions. It is the bottom of the 16th, you have just pinch hit to score a run bringing the score to 5-4, but in doing so you took out your last available pitcher. There are no outs and you have Kremblas and Johnson on first and second respectively. Not your fastest pair, but they run the bases reasonably. Machado comes up to bat, he will be followed by Krynzel, Hardy and Nelson. The bunt has no surprize value for you, they are waiting for it. Do you put on the bunt?
  20. Sorry, I just saw that you'd answered my question, we obviously posted at same time. I agree that hustle isn't always visible - but lack of it usually is
  21. He was very accurate at hitting the cut off man whenever he got to the ball which suggests his arm would be fine at third. Has he good reactions? Has he played third much? I really would quite like to see Corey at first and Clark at third- if he is any good there.
  22. If he can play third base, the Brewers really should give him a go at it, because last time here he certainly didn't look as if he could play left field. Hopefully it was just nerves, but does he ever hustle?
  23. I'm curious abot where Gripp was actually quoted as saying this, can you give me an addy? The Huntsville Times said something like 'according to sources', which means very little.
  24. From what I have seen of them both, Nelson is already far superior to Clark in LF. He has similar talents, but he actually hustles to get to the ball. In a playoff situation, I wouldn't want to see any of the present squad except Gemoll on first. The real insanity in this whole situation was the release of Gripp, he was excellent on first or third and at least as good as Nelson or Clark in LF. He was also a great pinch hitter. Exactly the sort of guy we needed for the play-offs. Does anyone know if he asked for his release as has been suggested or was just plain released? I tend to suspect the latter.
  25. sorry unfamiliarity led me to post without finishing. Knox is an excellent outfielder almost iin the same class as Krynzel. He is far and away the best base stealer in the team, if not in the entire SL. And if someone would explain to him that he doesn't have to try to hit it out of the ground every pitch, he is quite a useful bat. Give the guy a chance instead of ruling him out simply because he wasn't tagged prospect early in his career. (that goes double for Zoc)
