  1. Doug Jones is all I can think of, too. Does anyone remember that he switched leagues when he came to the Brewers? A big deal was made about how he was hittable, but had the advantage of unfamiliarity. It was the most exciting full season of closing I have ever personally watched. Does anyone remember his following season? He got killed. I don't know if we want Hoff next year. This is the extent of my damaged positivity gland, due to thousands of hopes flung violently against it over the past 15 years.
  2. I hate seafood. I love shrimp, though. I equate the phrase "free swinging" to "lower OBP due to strikeout." How do you see it differently?
  3. I liked what Cory had to say, whether in PBP or color, but he sounded like a honking goose. Nothing like the sonorous swells of the great Jim Powell. Sincerely, Jpow@ATLbraves.org
  4. I heard this same argument from Homer. Does anyone know if the opening day starter actually gets more starts? I think with the vagaries of days off, rotation shuffling, and injury, the first starter gets the same number as the fourth. (maybe not fifth, those guys often don't get the full season.)
  5. Nice to be mentioned on ESPN, though. No such thing as bad press.
  6. I hope he does retire. The Crew has had fantastic luck bringing back retired players. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  7. I heard the answer to why they always play the Braves on throwback night. Schlesinger explained it a couple of years ago in an interview with Bob & Brian. Because the Braves are still an active franchise, the Brewers have to get permission to use "their" uniforms, even as a one-time promotion. The Braves granted permission with the stipulation that it has to be a Brewers-Braves game. I agree that it would be more interesting to see the throwback Braves against a "historic" rival, like the Yanks or Cubs, but it's not up to them.
  8. You sound like you don't get it. Powell is special. That's why you love him. They can't bring in someone of similar talent, because that person has a job already.
  9. Will they? Yes or No? I say no. Pitching is a huge question mark, and defense will lose late in games.
  10. I have always had the feeling the Greene is murder on Brewers pitching. He's one of those guys I hate to see at the plate, so I don't like this move one bit. Does anyone have stats about whether he has been particularly good against the Crew, or maybe against the Central?
  11. If the Cubs pull off an NL East title this year, they are hands down the greatest team of all time. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  12. I disagree with those who are saying that Harden and Sabbathia are equivalent pitchers. If Harden were the same or better, and cheaper, Doug would have gotten him. I believe this. DM knows what he is doing. He got the best. Not a comparable guy. The best. This is the Brewers' year. They will overtake the Cubs and go to the NLCS. Another consideration is the financial aspect. I have not yet read how much Harden is costing the Cubs this year, but I know he'll cost $9m next year. Mark A has already said that the Crew is near their limit. Do we really want a probably-injured pitcher as our ace next year for $9m? Some have implied that this is small potatoes, but it is not, at least in MKE.
  13. This thread is odd. The question was: would anyone be EXCITED by trading a star for top-notch prospects? The answers have trended toward: Melvin doesn't make those trades. First, to answer: no, I would not be excited. I have seen those trades dozens of times. They are demoralizing to the team giving up the star. At best, they mean two or three months of totally meaningless baseball. Second, the reason Melvin doesn't make those trades is that in the past few years, the Brewers have been buyers and not sellers. That's good, isn't it?
  14. I'm sorry that Braun won't be in, because when I'm watching it, I like to have a horse in the race.
  15. This is terrific. Very good examples, DJ43. I have a couple of questions: did any of those teams (Tigers, D-Backs, Rox) change GMs before or during their rebuilding? And what was the status of their own minor leagues at the time of their rotten seasons? This is an honest question from a guy too lazy to find out on his own, not an attempt to start a fight.
  16. Once again, load of crap. Melvin has been here 5 years. Not 15, not 25. Florida has won twice in 10 years. DM inherited a desert. We are on the verge of playoffs and more. The Bando era was horrible; you are scarred. Got it. This is a new time.
  17. Wow. I disagree on every point. 1. He signed Soup because he is a post-season winner. Let's see what he is when the Crew is playing in October before we get all bent out of shape. In the regular season, he is a .500 pitcher, which he has been so far. 2. He traded Gross to get at-bats for Cameron, not Gwynn. Gwynn is just cheaper. Gabe Gross is a journeyman. Get your mind around it. 3. Dana Eveland, who so far has proved to be nothing special, got us a starting catcher, starting pitcher, and reliever for an entire season, and that isn't enough? Were you dating him? 4. Inman went for Linebrink, who became a valuable draft pick. Let's wait and see on that one. 5. Dear Mr. Melvin, I don't understand what you are doing with the manager. It may have something to do with the owner, but I just don't understand it. So it must be wrong. Please resign.
  18. I am just about to read the rest of this thread, so if this has been covered, I apologize. I am so incensed by this statement, I have to respond immediately. What could possibly make a person think that a great scout is automatically a great GM? I personally think that Jack Z should be the highest paid scout in the league but never, ever be moved from that position. How does the job of scouting director even relate to the responsibilities of a GM? The equivalent to me would be saying that A-Rod will be the best manager ever. He's great at playing, so of course he would be great managing players.
  19. http://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/79835b649c6980ed5814a714e32837ec17a0cff.jpg Hart and Wicket the Ewok. I couldn't find a pic of Hart looking as scruffy as he does now... I think the comparison is closer today.
  20. Yep. If Ned trusts a guy, and that guy makes even one bad decision, that's the manager's fault for allowing him to fail. Also, if the guy succeeds it was in spite of Ned, who by previous logic, put him in a position to fail. Fire Yost.
  21. Right. Hall is the Geoff Jenkins of 3rd base. And everyone here accepted Geoff for what he was and howled in fury when he was finally released. Remember? How "most fans" just accepted and appreciated a player with offensive limitations?
  22. Directly from the thread title: "Switch Braun and Fielder" with the reasoning that "ain't broke, don't fix." Directly from the thread title: "When does Kendall bat 2nd?" with the reasoning that it is working so well that it needs adjustment. If you're going to be inconsistent, at least try to hide it among different threads.
  23. Thank you, TwinsBrewersWorldSeries (never happen), for asking this question. I was asking the same question all last year-- why does the Crew keep spitting up in the sweep game? A friend of mine recently mentioned that he disagrees with Ned's policy of running out the bench once per series... *ding* the light finally went on. Why does Yost always start all his scrubs (uh, I mean, bench players) on the same day, usually the getaway day? It seems like once the Crew puts away the series, he doesn't care anymore. I understand that statistically sweeps don't mean anything. I'm not an idiot. But when you're playing a bad team, you might as well take the third game too instead of running out your AAA squad and losing 90% of the time. As an example, I offer the 2nd game of the most recent series. Yes, the Crew won, but barely, and against the team commonly referred to as the worst in MLB this year. Why take that chance? If you need your benchies to start on occasion, spread it out. Thoughts?
  24. I read the first part of this thread. I want to hear from the people who hated the Kendall signing. Yeah, we're six games in. No, I'm not starting a fight. The question here is simple: have opinions changed? And if not, what do you still dislike about your catcher, and who would be a good replacement (reasonable offers only)?
