2017 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 6-20
tbbrewers replied to And That's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Can they offer $125,000 for guys after the tenth round and pay for future college education if the player goes back to school if things do not work out? Or does future education have to be included in the $125,000? -
The 2017 MLB Draft Thread (#9 Pick + #34 & #46)
tbbrewers replied to ZBTMP's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Patrick, Just curious what the scouts thought of Will Crowe's outing against MSU? It looks like #9 is to high for him to be picked and he might be gone by #34 or #46 for the crew. Thanks Tony -

The 2017 MLB Draft Thread (#9 Pick + #34 & #46)

Patrick, Any reports on Will Crowe at University of South Carolina? Before Tommy John surgery he was projected to possibly be a high first round pick last year. I noticed he was throwing in the spring with good velocity but I have not heard anything from the fall yet. Thanks -

Shuckers vs Smokies game 1 Sunday 5-22-16 Hader is a gunslinger for sure. A lot of moving parts and he slings it in there. He did not throw one ball the dirt. His ball goes side to side with not very many of them going straight. He topped out at 94(about 4-5 times) and hit 93 about the same. His fastball was normally 88-91. Off speed was 77-85 and changed speeds a lot. The ball straightened out on him some when he maxed out as two of the three hits he gave up were on 93 and 92 mph fastballs. When he lost the zone some in the fourth....he really lost it. Not even close pitches. A double play got him out of that inning. With a tighter strike zone he may not have had the same results today. A lot of chatter from the Smokies dugout on balls that were close. Especially low strikes. Side note he smoked to balls to the outfield, but he stands really close to home plate. I mean right on the inside batters box line. Not sure that is recommended for a pitcher that could be a bit wild. The Shuckers batters missed a lot of curve balls that day. Nottingham hit two more fastballs on his hits and missed on curve balls. Cooper has a good approach at the plate. I am very interested to see how Woodruff does next time out. He has a big time arm too. He was hitting 98 some the night I saw him pitch. Nothing professional about this. Just what I saw. Entertaining note: My son had on a Braun shirt and while we were eating one of the club workers was joking around with us and stuff. He then ask us if we thought Braun might wind up with the Cubs and we said maybe. He said some of the people there said there is a possibility it could happen that some people had been around. Then he said he was told the Cubs may get Trout and I was like OK. Oh well...Some much for that information.

Shucker vs Smokies tonight Not a very good night for the Shuckers. Woodruff was wild at the first of the game. He had several visits from players to try and calm him down early on. The first two innings he worked 94-95 on his fast ball and was consistently 84-85 with his off speed stuff. Did not seem like he had a lot of movement on his off speed pitches. During the third inning and from there on out he sorta picked it up on his fastball hitting 98 twice and working 95-97. I have not seen many starters hit 98 here at Smokies Park. I think he will settle down some next time out and do much better. Nottingham crushed the first pitch he saw and hit a high fly ball out of left. He struck out a couple of times on off speed pitches if my memory serves me correctly. He did a pretty good job behind the plate especially balls in the dirt. The pass ball he missed was a 95 mph fast ball that just went off his glove. Taylor was on pretty good at the plate tonight with 2 solid hits and a walk. His only out was a well hit ball to left that was on the warning track. Zastryzny was very good tonight. He hit 91 a couple of times but mainly hit 89-90 on his fastball and had really good off speed stuff going down to 77.

Shuckers at TN Smokies 7-13-15 Lopez- In the end he had a pretty good line, but it was not his best stuff I would imagine. The lead off guy reached first to start an inning four times. Most of the time that is not a good thing. He was just off on some of his pitches it seemed like to me. He threw a lot of curves in the dirt that the Smokies hitters did not swing at. He did have the best curve of the pitchers I watched. His curve was 74-78 mph. His fastball was consistently 93-94. His change up or his other off speed was 84-87. Roache-He had some very nice at bats. He fouled off some pitches and extended his at bats. He took some close pitches that were called balls and got a couple of hits. Taylor-Could play CF in MLB now. He is one of those players that you need to see everyday to appreciate. He has good at bats, plays great defense, and plays hard. He is going to need to hit a lot of doubles in the gaps for now and hopefully he develops more power as he gets more experience. Reed-Very similar to Taylor if not just a little ahead of him in over all development. He did hit a double in the gap off of a lhp. He plays the game hard too and has a more advanced body than Taylor. Weisenburger- Did a GREAT job behind the plate. He blocks balls well and has an accurate arm on his throws to second. HE is really helping this staff behind the plate. One does not appreciate that until the opposing team lets 2-3 runs score over a series because of passed balls. He did not get a lot of hits in the three games I watched, but he squared up a lot pitches that did not result in actual hits. Ramirez- He really struggled against the left handed pitcher today. Orf- He has a good approach in the box and does not get fooled on pitches often. He just hits. -

Shuckers at TN Smokies Friday 7-10-15 Hall-Changes speeds a lot. Throws his fast ball 90-91, curve ball at 84-85, and change up at 80-81. He was just off the corners and high on some pitches tonight and was hit some. Barreda- Threw mostly 92 mph fast balls with movement. Throws across his body and hides the ball well. His off speed was 87 and was pretty good. Suter- He works really fast. It is almost to fast. He was throwing the pitch with 15-16 seconds on the pitch clock. He came in and threw 7 straight strikes getting two outs really quick. He walked the third hitter and then struck the next guy out. He threw one fastball at 88 but most were 84-85. Off speed was really good and was 70-71. Magnifico- Came in throwing 96-97 after throwing a lot pitches last night. His fast ball did drop to 94-95 a couple of times. Off speed was 87 and OK. He finished the night with a 99 mph fast ball on the last out. Don't see many 99's in that park. Arcia-First at bat hit a fast ball 398 feet hard to CF. He singled to left center and singled by the first baseman off of Soriano. He was down 0-2 to Soriano. Roache- He had better at bats tonight and crushed a 77 mph curve ball over 400 feet to CF. The double in the fifth by Contreras should probably have been caught by Roache. He slid by the ball and it rolled to the wall. Ramirez- Was robbed of a double in the second inning and sees a lot of pitches. Taylor and Reed-Do not strike out much but the Smokies played them like lefthanded pull hitters with their shift in the outfield. -

I went to the Shuckers/Smokies game tonight and here is my very unprofessional opinion. Hoobs Johonson-Works quick(usually 14/13 seconds left on the 20 second clock and he was throwing the ball) and keeps the ball low. Just missed on the corners tonight and that caused his pitch count to be high. Fastball in the first two innings was 88-89. In the third he went up to 90 and in the fourth he started hitting 91 on a slow gun. His off speed stuff was 80-81 with just OK movement and the hitters had to swing and miss for it to be a strike. He only threw one curve for a strike looking. Jacob Barnes-Threw all of his pitches in the 90's. Mostly worked 94-96. Really pitched harder than I thought he would. Taylor saved him a couple of runs with a web gem play in CF. Tyrone was playing Darvill to hit it away in left center and Darvill smoked a line drive back up the middle. Taylor ran a long ways and picked if off of the ground for the third out with 2 on. Jed Bradley- He has the 90 mph fast ball and the 78 mph curve but he just does not miss bats enough. K'd the first guy and then the next guy hits a dribbler just over the mound on the second base side. Arcia picks the ball up and slings a 100 mph side arm throw to Ramirez from about 25 feet. Ramirez got the error because it went by his glove. Apparently, Ramirez has not been working with Lind on how to close your eyes and catch those balls. Magnifico- His first 6 pitches were each 95. He did top out at 98 a couple of times in the last inning, but he mostly worked 95-97. His off speed was 84 and he picked up several swing and misses. Arcia-He can play. He has a lot of movement before he swings and has a leg kick, but his hand eye coordination is next level. He popped up on a 92 mph fastball first at bat. He hit a n 84 mph curve up the middle his second at bat and when no one was covering second he took it for a double. He smoked a high fastball(I think) over the third baseman his next at bat. Next at bat he hit a 93 mph fast ball on a rope over the centerfielders head. Walked the next time and stole two basses. Taylor-Is just smooth in his approach. Drives everything in the ground and not sure about power. Reed- Smoked a couple of balls to right field and hit a grounder up the middle for a hit. Curve balls got him in a later at bat. Roache- He can hit fastballs. He smoked a high fastball to right center field gap after just swinging at a curve that hit in the lefthanded batters box. He probably should have caught the double by McKinney to lead off the 6th. It was tailing back to him and it went in his glove and popped out. Hope this is not to lengthy. I will be going back tomorrow and maybe the other games too. -

I was able to watch the Stars play the Smokies this past Sunday. I do not have much to say about the hitting. Zarraga was the only Stars player to get a hit. Haniger hit a couple of sharp balls and hopefully is about to go a hitting spree and raise his average. I was not very impressed with Pierce Johnson for the Cubs to be honest. He topped out at 91 and worked his fastball in the 88-89 range and off speed was just ok. He was all over the place with his control. He threw 26 strikes out of 75 pitches. I liked how Youngman pitched but was not blown away by his stuff. His fast ball topped out at 91 several times but it mainly stayed around 88-90. He did not have his best curve ball today(at least that is what I hope anyway) as several were up in the zone. He threw a couple of good curve balls to Bryant. He did do a very good job keeping the ball down in the strike zone and was able to get 8 ground ball outs. He was actually a little thinner than I thought he would be too. I am not sure if he was just working on his fastball/slider, but that was about all he threw. Kjeldgaard made a really nice play at the wall on a ball hit to right field. AlMaFi, we were setting a little further back on the third base side on Friday. Because we showed up after the third inning we did not have to pay for our tickets or parking. We did not want to go down to low. -

It has been a good spring break for me this year. We drove 10 hours to watch the Padres at Brewers on Monday and Tuesday. Drove 10 hours back home on Wednesday so I could keep stats for my sons 4 high school baseball games the rest of the week. I will also be able to watch 2 of the Stars games vs the Smokies. I consider that a GREAT spring break. Stars vs Smokies game report from my very unprofessional eyes. I did not get to the park until the 4th inning but here are the things I saw. Pitchers first. The radar gun is very slow. This is the same gun where I watched Thornburg 92-94 max. Hall pitched a very good 5 innings. He worked with his fastball at 86-87. His best fastball was 88. It looked like his fastball had some late movement as the Smokies did not square up any of the pitches I witnessed. His curve was 75-76 with a pretty good drop on it. It was not as sharp as Inman's big curve a few years ago but it had good downward action on it. He only gave up 2 hits. One was a check excuse me swing for a bloopers over first. The other was a ball hit to Prince's left and he made a great play to get to it but his throw was off just a little. Barnes worked his fastball at 89 with a high of 91. It looked more like a flat straight fastball. His off speed stuff was 80-81 with low low of 76. With ok break. Medlen worked his fastball around 89 with his curve coming in at 76. Shakleford has a lot of action on his delivery. He hit 91 on the gun and pretty much threw fast balls. The fastes pitch on the gun we saw was 92 tonight by the Smokies Zych. Hitting. D'Vo looked good at the plate and made all balls hit to him look very easy and a couple of them he had to run a long ways. Reminded me of a more polished Lorenzo Cain. The double he hit was down the right field line and could have been a triple but Haniger was in front of him on the bases. Zarraga CAN hit. The only time they got him out was when he hit a ball to left while batting left-handed and the left fielder dove towards center and caught the ball. For a big guy he crowds the plate which I thought was very interesting. He receives the ball very well as a catcher but his footwork on throws and arm strength did not impress at all. Ramirez looked very poised at the plate. Will report on other hitters after Sundays game. -
Hope it was ok I used a lot of the information in this topic to help me make some decisions on attending my first game at Miller Park today and my second game tomorrow. Thank you guys and gals. I AM FIRED UP for the game today and tomorrow. GO BREWERS!!

2013 Draft prospects discussion
tbbrewers replied to TooLiveBrew's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Any chance the Brewers will take a shot at Wil Crowe from Pigeon Forge,TN? I would imagine he would be a selection where they are drafting. He is a South Carolina commitment and may be a hard kid to sign. I have seen him play a lot. He and my son have played against each other since they were eight years old. He has always been a very good pitcher. We also played against him in our district this year. He really does throw the ball in the low 90's and does not walk very many. His high school stats for this year are 14-1 on the season with 164 strikeouts, 12 walks and an ERA hovering around 0.50. -
I was at the Stars/Smokies game last night and here is my unprofessional opinion of the game. Thornburgs first pitch was 91 and that is where his fastball sat even in the 5th before his early dismissal. I think he hit 92 a few times. The gun at Smokies park is VERY slow and is probably off 4-5 mph. His off speed stuff was 78-81 with a few times dropping to 74. His command was very good considering NO pitches on the black were called for either team. He fielded his position very well and did a very good job with the bat. The home run by Brenly was a fastball that stayed over the plate. The home run by Lake was a 78 mph curve that stayed up. Lake killed that pitch and watched it as he flipped his bat. Every Stars infielder gave him the eye as he rounded the bases. With runners on first and second and a ball hit to second it was payback time for Lake at short. Manzella took Lake out at second base and the very young ump in the field called interference (wrong call) so the double play was turned. Darnell Coles was not happy with that call.... so he goes out and lays down on the ground beside second base towards the right field side of it about an arm’s length away and touches the bag... LOL For demonstration purposes for the ump. It was very funny. I loved it. After Coles was finished I am not sure what Thornburg said to the home plate umpire, but I know the ump dropped the F bomb on him. Then he threw Thornburg out. He was probably not pleased with the strike zone as no one else at the park was either. I thought Lake might take a fastball in the side the next at bat but situation was not good. As Lake struck out to end the game De La Rossa had to tag him on a ball in the dirt. He tagged him in the back and I think there may have been a couple of special words said to Lake at that time. Lake turned around and said something back to De La Rossa. They play 2 more games so we shall see. For comparison of mph Merkinger was 87/73 and Kintzler was 88/73. Hatley for the Smokies was throwing mostly 92 and his scouting reports say he works 94-96. Scooter can hit. My buddies gave me a hard time as the three man might weigh 165... They came around after a couple of at bats. He has very quick hands and did a good job turning a double play.

I do not have a problem with Green at 2B in 2010 and leading off. I was basing my assessment on the fact that Brantley has been in the lead off position at Huntsville this season and Green has hit third for BC. If the Brewers consider Green a lead off hitter at what point do they put him in that position so he can start learning it? -

One thing that goes in Brantley's favor is that he is a true lead off hitter. We may need a true lead off hitter in the very near future. . -
Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 21-50

I coached high school basketball against Michael the past two season. He could shoot the three pretty well and had a couple of good dunks in games that I scouted. He seems like a good kid and he has a live arm. I do not believe he has pitched a lot until this season. He caught the attention of scouts last summer when he started throwing in the low 90's. I could be wrong but I do not believe he is 190(probably lighter than that). Brewers' offer sounds appealing to White By Jesse Smithey (Contact) Saturday, June 7, 2008 There is now a sure-fire way to make Michael White's right throwing arm fall limp: Tell the former Anderson County High School standout he's just been drafted into the big leagues. White, a 6-foot-6, 190-pound Walters State signee, was picked by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 33rd round Friday. The news, delivered by his dad's phone call, caught him off guard like a pinch-runner napping at first base. "I was driving and he told me (the news) and I couldn't drive any more," said White. "My arms went limp. I started sweating and going crazy. It was the best feeling ever." White said the Brewers will keep track of his progress this summer and make an offer after doing so. White added that the Brewers have promised to pay for his education, and if they keep that promise he'd take the offer and forego his college plans for the time being. Brewers regional scout Joe Hodges kept tabs on the White since the 2006 Class AA state tournament, White said. "He told me I had potential," said White. "And he said, 'I'll put in a word for you if you put in the work.' " White said he never thought his draft day would happen this soon, however. "I was going to get on the Internet tonight. I don't know (Milwaukee's) minor league teams and I was going to look them up and order me some hats," said White. "I was going to order one for my papaw, my dad, my nanna. They were all the ones who called me today." -
General Draft Discussion Thread

Apparently the Brewers were looking at Tony Delmonico in the fifth or sixth round but the Dodgers drafted him. Delmonico plays shortstop for Florida State. Delmonico had been in contact with representatives from Milwaukee and the New York Mets, but the Dodgers weren't on the radar until he heard his name called. "I didn't even get a call from the Dodgers," Delmonico said of his waiting game on Thursday. "I was on the phone with a Brewers guy who said they were going to take me in the fifth or sixth round. "Right when I least expect it, they say, 'Anthony Delmonico goes to the Los Angeles Dodgers.' I was shocked and excited at the same time." http://govolsxtra.com/news/2008/jun/05/delmonico-drafted-by-dodgers/
