  1. Keep in mind, Gamel is not the only option at third base that the Brewers have in the system. Taylor Green is more a Cirillo-type hitter as opposed to the power threat Gamel is, but trading Gamel is NOT the end of the world.
  2. Gillespie's gonna be the big-time steal for Arizona in this deal. I'd rather have seen Katin go to Arizona, not Gillespie.
  3. The thing is - at this point, it could be an energy drink picked up from 7-11 or a supplement from the local GNC. I wonder if they have overcompensated.
  4. Keep in mind, there are other options: Taylor Green and Cole Gillespie are often overlooked, but both could be pretty good. Gillespie has the plate discipline; and Green's a left-handed hitter who's a lot like Jeff Cirillo.
  5. That is a good point. However, I would argue that with Rickie's inability to avoid injuries, I think Escobar should be looked at more as a 2B - with JJ being kept around until Lawrie is ready to come up.
  6. Have you seen Snider's OPS? It's .686 as of now (per Baseball-Reference.com). yes. and I also have seen this.... http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/rankings/top-100-prospects/2009/267698.htmlEven if Snider rebounds, there is the other corner OF Toronto has... whose OPS is a whopping .734. I mean, does Alexis Rios set anyone on fire? But as I said, the centerpiece is Salome. Filling the Blue Jays' hole at catcher (Salome is still one of the top prospects for the Brewers) would go a long way. I'm sure Salome would easily top the .720 OPS that Barajas is putting up - and Raul Chavez is even WORSE (.663). Salome fills the LaPorta role in the deal. Dillard fills the "Zach Jack" hole - and he's racked up better major-league numbers than Jackson. The top of the Brewers' deal is not exactly Matt LaPorta, but two others in the deal (Katin, Dillard) are probably better than their counterparts in the Sabathia trade, and Lee Haydel is a bit like Michael Brantley. Slightly better package - particularly since the Brewers may have to buy out Halladay's no-trade clause.
  7. no offense, but Brendan Katin couldn't hold Travis Snider's jock in terms of "talent." there's no way this is close to what they'd get for Halladay. Have you seen Snider's OPS? It's .686 as of now (per Baseball-Reference.com).
  8. The package for Sabathia, a better pitcher than Halladay, was LaPorta, Zach Jackson, and eventually Michael Brantley (plus a low-A pitcher). The package offered for Halladay is Salome (who is a clear upgrade at catcher over the Barajas/Chavez combo the Blue Jays presently have), Brendan Katin (who would arguably be an upgrade over Travis Snider in left field), Tim Dillard (again, better than Zach Jackson was), and Lee Haydel (who serves as the A-ball prospect). The Blue Jays got problems this year. Salome might be what they need - and filling a hole at catcher may be something they'd go for.
  9. Brewers get: RHP Roy Halladay Blue Jays get: OF Brendan Katin C Angel Salome RHP Tim Dillard OF Lee Haydel Toronto needs a corner OF with some pop and a catcher. Salome and Katin can provide those easily, and that should be enough to get Halladay. The guy I really hate to include in the deal is Dillard, who could be a solid starter (hey, he gives you a quality start, even if the BB/K ratio ain't pretty). The 2010 rotation would be Halladay, Gallardo, Bush, Parra, and Suppan/Cody. Not bad. Better than this year's by a fair bit... EDIT: Corrected Halladay's first name.
  10. Taylor Green - Jeff Cirillo/Lyle Overbay: Regular doubles machines who could also take walks. Cole Gillespie - Brady Clark: A solid outfielder who draws walks, racks up doubles and triples, and is probably an underrated leadoff hitter. EDIT: Alicides Escobar - Scott Podsednik: Great speed, but value as a leadoff hitter will be VERY dependent on a high batting average.
  11. I wouldn't be too upset if they tried Pokorny as a starter. If he pans out there, it's a bonus - and if not, he could always go back to the bullpen.
  12. Would Freel be an option for second base? He has good OBP skills - and he'd be a valuable bench player.
  13. Gillespie with a second K, but with three fouls - a five-pitch AB. So, in the ten pitches in his two strikeouts, Gillespie fouled five off, swung and missed three times, and two balls. I'd call them good ABs, even if they were Ks, particularly since he took it to at least five pitches - and in half of those ten pitches, he made contact.
  14. First bad start all year. I'm not thinking Capuano - I'm hoping for a Jamie Moyer. EDIT: Cole Gillespie hit another homer. I think he's getting back on track.
  15. Gillespie also had a sac fly in the game - and there was a line drive right at an outfielder. All in all, 1-for-3 with a run and a sac fly isn't bad. Gillespie's quietly been pushing his stats up since he had that slow start in AAA due to having to come back from an injury. He already has 27 walks, about 2.5 times as many as Brendan Katin in 64 fewer plate appearances.
  16. So, is Roberts a CF who can also play catcher, or a catcher who can also play center field?
  17. Katin certainly is making a case for consideration in 2010. That said, I think the big questions have to be what skill sets the Brewers will need. The Brewers have power hitters galore: Fielder and Braun as the "big guns" with Gamel, Hardy, Cameron, and Hart as a second tier. Tack on Salome, who may be catching as early as September this year as a prelude to starting at catcher next year. Katin - by the end of next month - may be at a high point, and it may be a more prudent move to "sell" to get some significant backup. Say a Ryan Freel/Chone Figgins-type of player. Clearly, this year, depth has been the problem. The starting nine are great when they are on, but if some are injured or slumping...
  18. Well, Burns has a no-no through 3. Too bad the offense is asleep today.
  19. Nobody seems to be noticing that Cole Gillespie's been hitting .297 in his last 10 games.
  20. What's up with Taylor Green? He's not been playing of late...
  21. Can't say I'm surprised - but I will happily say "I told y'all so" with regards to Cody - the pwnage continues unabated, it seems. And Gillespie racked up two hits. His OPS over this season has been climbing of late - looks like he finally got back in the groove after the injury problems and trying to do too much earlier.
  22. A one-hitter preserved by two calls of an error - which means that Gillespie may have been robbed. Not all O-fers are bad, and in that case, reaching on an error and a walk in six innings of play so far isn't bad - especially when it may have been a infield single the other way.
  23. Another walk for Gillespie. Even when the opposing pitcher's dealing, he is getting on.
  24. How about Cole Gillespie? Methinks his elbow is no longer bugging him - in his last two games he's had a triple, a salami, and two walks. And even in his slump, he's drawn walks.
  25. Cody and Dillard are, I think, two of the more underrated. Cody's continuing the pwnage he delivered last season, and Dillard's been solid enough that I'd say he'd be a decent #4 or #5 for the Crew. If Cody's still putting up a sub-1 WHIP, and Dillard keeps rattling off solid numbers as a starter, it doesn't hurt the Brewers rotation.
