  1. Gillespie homers and delivers a sac fly. In terms of 1-for-4 games, it's not a bad performance. The second baseman may have taken away another hit. Walk rate is still at about 1 every 6 ABs, on pace with last year (roughly). Is Gillespie just a little less lucky this year?
  2. The Stars had a BUNCH of rainouts earlier - this probably relates to the pitching two-step they have to do just to have enough starters.
  3. Katin's bets use would be as bait in a trade in mid-summer.
  4. I'd probably call him unspectacularly great. In this slump, he walks once every 6.2 PAs. The OBP-BA is .137 as of this moment. Translate that to Gillespie's career AVG of .284. That would be an OBP of .427. Let's say Gillespie only hits .260 in the majors. I'll still take that .397 OBP at leadoff. Now, imagine that in front of JJ, Ryan, and Prince.
  5. Sounds good, but I would also want a team option for 2-3 years beyond that should Sheets show that he could stay healthy.
  6. While I pointed out his poor MLE from last season, I don't think that should be taken too seriously. He played the entire season with a broken foot., which required offseason surgury. He then had a bum elbow to start this year. I'm concerned about his durability, but I don't think we've seen the best of his bat. What is most impressive is how he is drawing walks all over the place, even at this point. And his bat is getting a bit better, too (he added a double in last night's loss). The tools to lead off are there - or at least being a better option at leadoff than present options (Weeks, Hart).
  7. Cody continuing the pwnage. That is good. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  8. I certainly am not saying he is, but I am saying that his skill-set would fill a need for the Brewers quite adequately, if not well, for a few years.
  9. The 1987 World Series between Minnesota and St. Louis featured two left fielders who were batting leadoff for most of that season: Dan Gladden (Twins) and Vince Coleman (Cardinals). Now, I wouldn't exactly call either of those two teams desperate for talent that year. Gillespie's shown that even when he slumps, he draws bunches of walks. If JJ, Ryan, and Prince can combine for 85-110 homers a season, I'd like someone like Gillespie, who has a pretty good chance of being on base when those homers come, batting in front of them.
  10. Perhaps, but still, I think that it underrates him. Think of it this way: He probably has a better set of tools for leadoff than Weeks or Hart. His presence could allow the Brewers to, at the very least, let Cameron walk (offer him arby and get the picks), move Braun to RF, and Hart to CF. So, for 2010, imagine this lineup: lf: Gillespie ss: Hardy rf: Braun 1b: Fielder 2b: Weeks 3b: Gamel cf: Hart/Hall (one of these two gets traded for a starting pitcher) c: Salome pitcher That could be a good lineup. Gillespie's OBP skills and speed are just crying out to take over the leadoff spot - and I think he'd do quite well there. Hart's OPS in Huntsville was .807 at age 21. Gillespie posted an .858 at age 24. The big difference: Gillespie drew almost three times as many walks (75 to 28). I'd rather have him leading off as opposed to Hart - Gillespie's Nashville "slump" includes a .353 OBP. You see a reserve, I see Milwaukee's leadoff hitter from 2010-2015. And if Taylor Green develops, then I think we have a pair of good table setters to hit 1-2 from 2011-2015.
  11. He's good in LF. Just move Braun to right.
  12. Well, his three-run homer tonight removed a lot of worries. He'll be fine with the bat... he's a left-handed hitting version of Ryan Braun. That is the good news.
  13. The only "good" news with this is that JJ takes the #2 spot in the order.
  14. Perhaps the simplest move is a Hll/'Gamel platoon at third, with Counsell leading off and playing second. JJ moves up to second in the order.
  15. Too bad Alcides Escobar has seen his OPS drop to the .660 range. Would have been nice if he could have stepped in.
  16. In this particular case, it would be to lock up a pitcher with no health issues to date at a reasonable salary. Dave Bush is pitching like a solid #3 starter, and those have not exactly grown on trees for the club. Past pitching prospects have had big injury issues (Mike Jones and Mark Rogers being two of the most prominent in recent years, but go back to Nick Neugebauer and J.M. Gold). Dave Bush has not to date... and as such, it might be reasonable to try to lock him up now.
  17. At worst, a valuable bench player. If Doumit is in RF, he is an upgrade over Hart, and as a switch-hitter, he's not dealing with platoon issues. Then consider upgrading the bullpen over Jorge Julio (say, with Chris Smith from Nashville).
  18. He'd be a free agent after 2011. On the one hand, if he can be signed to a reasonably cheap extension (say through 2013), I'd have no problem with him behind the plate. He's a switch hitter with some power who can also play a corner OF spot or 1B. At worst, he's a very valuable bench player. At best, he takes over at catcher long-term. But what would he cost the Brewers? I could see Pittsburgh holding the Crew up for a fair bit. And who's to say that Salome or Lucroy won't provide the same level of offense? If he comes relatively cheap (say for Corey Hart and Jorge Julio), then I'd make the deal.
  19. Over Hall in left? Not really. I do the same thing with Baseball Mogul sometimes.
  20. OK, Braun DID get plunked by Dempster. Time to send Soriano a little chin music tomorrow. Stick up for Ryan, and let Pinella know he gets no more freebies.
  21. I hope it happens a lot sooner than eventually. The Crew could sign Prince long-term and let Gamel play first.
  22. I agree with this. One way to get rid of the depth in AAA is to call Dillard up to give our bullpen another multi-inning reliever. I don't think he's going to make it as a starter. He strikes out way too little batters, that's fine if you're getting a ton of ground balls, but he's not doing that either.Dillard's stats so far (small sample size, of course): 4-0, 4 starts, 23 IP, 1.17 ERA, 1.000 WHIP. Only real worry is a 1:1 K/BB, but Dillard always was more of a ground-ball pitcher. He'd arguably be an improvement over Suppan in the rotation.
  23. True. The full season will tell. So far, though, the results are looking pretty darned good. The big question: If Cody puts up great numbers at AA (assuming the pwnage continues), do you send him to Nashville in July?
