1. Yesterday, I was riding with a family member. She went out to the car a couple of minutes ahead of me, and when I joined her, she was on the phone. Of course, I didn't want to be impolite and interrupt her when she started driving in the wrong direction (not the wrong way safety-wise, but the wrong way in comparison to where we needed to go). So I kept my mouth shut, and we went the wrong way. The simple solution would have been to stay parked until the call was complete. I could have easily handled that. It would have been safer, too.
2. brewmann04, if you feel comfortable sharing your seat locations once they are established, we can stash them in a forum that members can see without their being all over the internets. brewmann04 can post to the "Off Topic (Private)" without the help of a moderator if he'd like. The only differences between that forum and the others are that it's only visible to logged in members and that it isn't visible to search engines. "Off Topic (Private)" is located at the top of the Off Topic forum. So, my stupid reply got added 3 times. Not sure how that happened. Fixed. Thanks for using the post report feature to alert us to that.
3. One of the articles indicated that Craig would be sticking to his regular host job rather than having to fill in frequently on play by play.
4. trwi7 is talking about a couple of posts where the moderator's edit notation says something like this: The idea is to communicate the rules. People generally know about regular cusses, so there's probably little need to note which cuss has been edited in those situations. But posters tend to forget about acronyms where one of the letters stands for a cuss. It makes sense to be a little more clear about why the message has been edited. This is the snippet from the language section of Fan Forum Etiquette Forum Etiquette that people tend to forget:
5. I think the cold feels worse today than it did on the days that it was way below zero.
6. Yeah, I don't think the number 50 is actually retired. I think it simply notes "50 years." At least one team has honored a broadcaster with a microphone rather than using a number. The honor is the same as discontinuing the use of a number, and it makes sense to go this route when someone didn't actually wear the team's uniform.
7. The MacBook Air is actually very cost competitive in comparison to Windows computers that have similar sizes and weights. Besides the hardware itself, the bundled software adds a lot of value. iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand have been included for years, as have Preview, Image Capture, Calendar, and Mail. Reminders and Notes were added in 2012. In 2013, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, which have been available for purchase for years, were included with all new Macs free of charge. I believe that these three apps are offered as free downloads from the App Store rather than being pre-installed. Additionally, new versions of the Mac operating system are now free of charge.
8. I'd say that Hoffman relates to Don Sutton, who was here for a similar amount of time and didn't have his number retired. Fingers' selection to me is somewhat tenuous. While this would never be publicly acknowledged by the Brewers, I'd bet that if they had it to do over again, Rollie's number wouldn't be retired.
9. I'd recommend zeroing in on weight and battery life. I'd bet that even a half pound can make a difference. Intel's Haswell processors have tremendously improved battery life over previous generations. The trick is identifying them as most manufacturers don't use "Haswell" in their product descriptions. All current MacBooks have Haswell processors except for the legacy 13" Macbook Pro (the one with the DVD drive).
10. You should also check to see if there are specific recommendations for your son's field of study. My nephew is an engineering student; the requirements for his computer were significantly beefed up over the standard recommendations. It's quite a bit heavier than what would be ideal for lugging around campus. Another thing to check is if certain brands can be repaired on campus. As an example, UW-Madison has certified technicians on hand to do warranty repairs on Dell and Apple products. Here are UW-Madison's recommendations, last updated in August 2013: https://kb.wisc.edu/showroom/page.php?id=3061
11. The Brewers need to set up a committee to research and discuss Walk of Fame candidates like the Hall of Fame did a few years back to examine Negro Leaguers. The Hall set up the committee because it was apparent that there were people who likely deserved to be inducted but were being kept out because voters didn't know much about them. After a committee does its thing, the current voting process (or a variation of it) can be continued.
12. Nvidia would be better, but the Intel graphics might be more than enough for your needs. Apple wouldn't be offering integrated graphics if they were woefully inadequate. As you'd know, multiple screens would be something you can do with an iMac too. It'd be a cheap and easy option of you went with 21 inches and subsequently found that you could use more room to maneuver.
13. Screen size is really up to you. I love as much screen size as I can get after considering the other logistics, such as price and the amount of room I need to place the computer. Having said that, if you can function with a laptop, you can consider anything you get on a desktop to be a bonus. Also, the fact that you can spread your work across multiple desktops can keep things from getting too crowded. The one thing I'd really consider is storage. You'd feel the benefits of an SSD or a fusion drive every time you use the machine. I'd highly recommend opting for one or the other, and I think the speed advantages of SSD or fusion would definitely trump the capacity available on a standard hard drive. I'd definitely spend $200 for either the 1TB fusion drive or the 256GB SSD. The other question is graphics. The low end iMac uses Intel's Intel Iris Pro 5200 integrated graphics, which are as good as integrated graphics currently get. The upgraded 21" and both 27" models have discreet graphics from Nvidia. FWIW, I prefer the Magic Trackpad over the Magic Mouse, but if you and your wife don't agree on which one to get, for $69, you can have one of each.
14. Call back when you say you will, even if you don't have any news. Exactly. That would allow me as the customer/client/patient to be able to say I'm that I'm going to be away from the phone and negotiate a new callback time. In yesterday's case, the followup call occurred 2 hours and 45 minutes later. I missed it, called back within 5 minutes, and got an answering machine.
15. I'd bet on this coming to Apple TV too. From pcmag.com:
16. I absolutely hate it when people like businesses or doctors say that they'll call back in 15 minutes because I absolutely know it ain't gonna happen.
17. I'm having trouble fathoming why an OS upgrade should require any more than two restarts, i.e. one at the beginning of the installation process and one at the end. Also, there should be adequate prompts so users know when or if they need to intervene. Mac OS X does a restart about three minutes after the installation begins. A restart button appears, and if the user doesn't hit it within 30 seconds, the restart happens automatically. I don't recall if there's a second restart at the end of the installation process or not. The bottom line is that I've seen enough of your posts over the years to feel that an OS upgrade should definitely be within your capabilities, and it should be within the capabilities of someone with much less knowledge than you have. If things are messing up, it's definitely not your fault.
18. When I went to Whole Foods today, the underground parking was a zoo, and the store was crowded. But there was no waiting to check out. Checking out is something that the store can control, and being able to do it quickly negated the other stuff.
19. i can't remember the last brewer before weeks drafted and when signed that summer, given a major league contract. Rob Ellis (1971) was the only other Brewer to be signed to a major league contract when drafted. He went directly from college to the majors.
20. It turns out that the Christmas program to score highest in the ratings this year was two colorized [cite]I Love Lucy[/cite] episodes combined into a one-hour special. One episode was a Christmas show that isn't seen very often as it's never been part of the syndication package. I think that show might have been colorized for a while. The other episode was [cite]Lucy's Italian Movie[/cite], which includes the classic catfight in the grape vat.
21. Shouldn't you be able to do AOL mail (or any mail) on a Chromebook?
22. (man, I used to know how to shorten these links.) Just paste in the link; the system will shorten it and make it clickable. There may be an odd exception that breaks. If that happens, you'll need to put the address between like you did above. If you want to paste a web address and have it appear as plain text, paste in the link and uncheck "Do not automatically parse URLs" under the post editor. Use : when you want to ensure that the full link appears when you want to make a link clickable after checking "Do not automatically parse URLs"… you'd do this if you wanted some links to be clickable with others appearing as plain text when the link shortening mechanism fails (mentioned above) Use to link text, e.g. some text.
23. The sports package fills a niche when people are in markets with multiple home teams and their providers' basic packages don't offer channels for all of them. Since these are home teams, Extra Innings and MLB.tv would black them out. The poster child for this situation would be Iowa, where the Brewers, Twins, Cubs, White Sox, Cardinals, and Royals are considered to be home teams for the entire state.
