  1. I am in, too. Not sure of the logistics of it. . .how do we gather money, etc.
  2. Very sad. Very young. My prayers go out to his family. And I also saw that note about supporting the Brewers Community Foundation. A Brewers fan in life and in death.
  3. JohnBriggs12, that's good stuff. At what point did you become aware of the Selig group and their efforts? And did you attend any of the White Sox home games at County Stadium? Did you have expectations that the White Sox would be moved to Milwaukee? I turned 8 in 1970, so I had no memory or connection to the Braves. In the Brewers early years, they played in-season exhibition games against the Braves at least a couple of times. I recall that there was some community excitement over those games. Was some of the anti-Braves sting gone by then?
  4. If the Brewers announced they were leaving, they would be dead to me. I wouldn't follow them in their new market, I wouldn't go to another game at Miller Park. The only reason they would leave would be financial, and I would feel especially bitter about funding an ownership group that doesn't want to be in Milwaukee. I wouldn't get rid of any of my Brewers stuff, because it's mine. Maybe I would decide to wear it again some day. As for baseball, I like the Mets and I kind of like the Twins, so I would become stronger fans of those teams. I spent several years in New Jersey and I came to like the Yankees/Mets rivalry. And I feel a certain kinship with Minnesota that I don't feel toward Illinois. I think the Twins are not dissimilar to the Brewers in terms of being a cold weather smaller market team. I'm not a fan of the NFL, so the whole Packers/Vikings things doesn't matter to me. . .but really, with MLB Network and fantasy baseball, etc., it's possible to become a fan of MLB without really devoting oneself to any particular team, and maybe I'd just do that.
  5. I'm not a jersey wearer. I came of age before it was a thing, so I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing one unless I had a son on the team, which I don't and I don't. That said, for those who do wear them, I think the more obscure, the better. If someone wants to wear a Yuni or a Rob Picciolo, or a Neugebauer, I think that's better than another guy in another Lucroy or Braun jersey. The most memorable jersey I saw was a Brewers vs. White Sox game a few years ago at Miller Park and a White Sox fan was wearing a full retro uniform including tapered pants, stirrups and batting helmet. He was about 50 lb. overweight, too, which made the look all the more comical. As for people who wear jerseys with their own name. . .I'm against that.
  6. Great pics, Matt. We're in the middle of a remodeling, but sadly, it's for my daughter's bedroom, bathroom & my wife's hobby room. My basement remains a place to store junk for now. One of these days. . .
  7. From today's JS notes column by Todd Rosiak: Melvin wouldn't comment on the state of possible talks with the Phillies, but acknowledged the lines of communication have remained open with "K-Rod." "I don’t know if it’s active, but we still have conversations," Melvin said. "Mark deals more with that. (Agent) Scott (Boras) keeps calling Mark." Melvin peeled back the curtain a little in revealing that he's not even aware of the state of negotiations with Boras & KRod. That's something that Attanasio is involved with. That seems strange to me that the GM of the team is out of the loop on a potential deal for a player.
  8. I usually get all giddy over the rockheads who get tossed around the streets of Pamplona during the running of the bulls festival, but that takes place in July. Imagine my glee when I see this news from over the weekend: http://www.foxnews.com/world/2015/02/15/american-youth-is-recovering-from-serious-goring-during-spanish-carnival-bull/ Today's rockhead is Benjamin Miller, a 20 year old from Georgia, and he suffered injuries to his back, thighs and. . .sphincter! "It's not the worst injury I've seen, but it's the biggest goring wound I've ever had to operate on," (Surgeon Enrique) Crespo told The Associated Press. Get Well Soon, Benjamin. Hopefully you will recover in time to warn your friends about the dangers of messing with animals, and maybe not use their deaths for your amusement.
  9. Most of those games were played in 2:30 or less with more action than today's game.
  10. I have had good luck buying from BallPark Heroes on eBay. seller bph32
  11. At County Stadium, there used to be a line of phone booths with payphones. I remember one time we were buying a house, and using one of those phone booths to get a report on a home inspection that we had ordered. I was standing in one of the glass booths, jotting down notes for 15 or 20 minutes while the inspector's Admin. Assistant read through the report for me. Often we were interrupted by cheering fans (not really soundproof), and that phone booth felt like about 110 degrees inside. I came out drenched in sweat, with barely legible notes scrawled on the margins of a game program. So. . .the conveniences of the 21st century are just fine for me.
  12. The JCI club patio is the outdoor deck area of the club on the 3rd level in the LF corner. From the bar, you're able to go out into the open air and sit at tall bistro tables. Or at least that's how it was a couple of years ago. I'm all for enhanced WiFi. Sorry to the purists, but try sitting with an antsy kid who is only half interested in the actual baseball, and then suffer through a 30 minute half inning, and try to endure that. Baseball is slowwwww for those who are only casual fans. And if the doughnuts are good, I will eat them.
  13. I can't get fired up about any plan without seeing an architectural drawing of the building. What are they going to put in it? Where will it be located? What do they expect to draw other than basketball and concerts? How is this different from any other NBA arena? How much will seats cost? Will Milwaukee support a team at those prices? What will the building look like? I'm not opposed to them building a world class facility, and to put some of that on the public, but it has to be awesome to draw any interest outside of the Milwaukee area.
  14. No!!! He's overpriced, with diminishing skills and is a jerk.
  15. I appreciate Gallardo's contributions to the franchise. There's sure to be some argument on where he ranks on the list of All Time Brewer Starting Pitchers. I'd put him 4th, behind Higuera, Sheets & Caldwell. From a purely selfish standpoint, though, I'm kind of glad to see him go. Lately he seemed to take so very long to record outs. Working slowly, going deep into counts...I've left many a Gallardo start at 9:20 in the 4th inning, being lulled to sleep by his deliberate work. He'll end up on the wall of fame, and was a part of some good teams. I hope he has success with Texas, where the fans there aren't as impatient as I am.
  16. Don Harron died today at age 90. If his name isn't familiar, he was on Hee Haw as the KORN news reader, and basically rode that character, Charlie Farquharson, for his whole life. Not unlike the guy who played Foster Brooks or the guy who played Charlie Weaver. I won't pretend that Hee Haw was great art, but it did deliver some country music greats...Hank Snow, Roy Acuff, Faron Young, Johnny Cash, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Stringbean, George Jones, Tammy Wynette, June Carter, Grandpa Jones, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, etc. And if you catch it some nights on RFD TV, you might find episodes with Johnny Bench, Dizzy Dean or Mickey Mantle.. RIP, Don. You delivered pure, rural Canadian schtick.
  17. To my point of view (not my budget), a ticket to a World Series Game 7 will always be available. StubHub and ticket brokers have made every game available to those who want to buy admission. So the Timeless Ticket doesn't grant you access to something you otherwise cannot get. If people want to buy it, then Why Not, indeed... But I can't see the appeal. Plus the ornament itself is ugly.
  18. Brookfied is quite small..just a single straight sidewalk, so a traffic jam can happen when anyone stops. And everyone stops. Plus there's not enough produce there. Grilled brats, bakery, soup, bubble tea, meats, poultry & eggs, canned goods, a musician, honey, a knife sharpener. They need more farmers.
  19. I've used Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis's image on this board probably for 10 years or so. To me, he's one of the most photogenic guys that I can think of. The angry scowl, the heavy wool suit, the mass of white hair on a small man. I like to use the Judge to release the ornery side of me, and I think he sort of puts an exclamation point on a post. And, I love baseball history and the Hall of Fame, so I like the connection there, too. I'm not so fond of his racism, but he's iconic.
  20. Speaking of Brookfield and What Bugs Me and Farmers Markets. . .The Brookfield Farmers Market bugs me. It is much too quaint with dog walkers and double-wide strollers, and people gathering and talking and drinking giant coffee drinks. I want more produce and less of my neighbors.
  21. I like the Barrelman and the yellow Wisconsin/ball & glove shirts. I like the grey mid-90s MB with the criss-crossed bats shirt, and the one with the clock tower. The rest of them seem pretty unoriginal.
  22. In the Milwaukee area, there is a winter farmers market every Saturday at the Mitchell Park Domes. You can get great stuff there and support small local farms. I am a food snob, so I'll seek out good and interesting food. The produce at Outpost Natural Foods is the best (in my opinion). Better than Whole Foods, even in the smaller space. I'm not as crunchy and fervent as some in the anti-GMO community, though I respect what they're doing in their fight against agrichemicals and modified seeds. Typical produce in today's groceries and restaurants have so many fewer nutrients than in earlier generations. Crops are developed to travel long distances and to maintain uniformity and beauty, and that comes at a nutritional price. For gardeners, I recommend Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds and the Seed Savers Exchange catalogs. It's cool to grow tomato varieties that were brought to the US from exotic places generations ago. Both catalogs have tons of varieties of vegetables and flowers.
  23. What I don't understand is how the only evidence some people are willing to accept is a failed drug test. Clearly, that's solid evidence of a player using, but it's not the only thing. Bill Madden of the NY Daily News was on a Mike Francesa podcast a couple days ago, and he said that he had trusted players tell him that Piazza was using. Why is Madden not allowed to consider that when casting his HOF vote? Why can't we look at Luis Gonzalez's physique at the beginning of his career, and see what it looked like during his 57 HR season, and see that nobody in today's game looks like that, and not consider that? Writers have access to stuff that fans do not. So shouldn't we let them use their judgment?
  24. My 10 vote ballot would include Unit, Pedro, Schilling, Smoltz, Mussina, Biggio, Raines, Edgar, Trammell and Kent.
