  1. MLB and MiLB should just pit the Stars against a minor league all-star team.
  2. 1. Gamel 2. Laporta 3. Escobar 4. Salome 5. Jeffress 6. Brantley 7. Green 8. Gillespie 9. Lucroy 10. Pena 11. Braddock 12. Cain 13. Brewer 14. Errecart 15. Aquilar 16. Dillard 17. Iribarren 18. Hammond 19. Ramlow 20. Welch
  3. I want Torres as the closer as long as he keeps the ball down in the strike zone along with movement. The 8th inning coluld be handled by committee---Mota, Tavarez, and/or Shouse depending on match-ups or potential pinch hitters. It would also be nice to have the Stetter who throws strikes. As soon as Gagne is pain free he needs to go to Nashville for some rehab appearances. I would make sure that those appearances are at least 2 innings a piece so that he either builds his arm strength or breaks down. I am not hoping he gets hurt but I wonder if part of his ineffectiveness is do to lack arm conditioning because he is babying himself for fear of getting hurt. I believe his current arm problems closely followed the only 2 inning appearance he has made this year.
  4. I also wonder how much an infielder is helped by a first baseman who can scoop a low throw for an out rather than miss it for an error by the infielder. Errecart is in his 2nd full year of playing first base so I assume he is much better defensively than he was last year.
  5. After 10 errorless games in a row, Gamel's on a pace for 32 errors this season which would be quite an improvement from last year, roughly 40% fewer errors. The good news is that he seems to be getting better as the season progresses. While 10 errors is a lot, 3 of his 7 fielding errors occurred in one game and he has made only 3 throwing errors. Of course other stats are important but I don't know where to find them e.g., errors per chance and range.
  6. No one besides Gwynn would have to be included if we picked up all of Maddux's salary.
  7. I think Taylor Green is a 2nd baseman in 3rd basemen clothes.
  8. I keep reading that Gamel can't throw accurately but this year in the first 35 games Gamel has 10 errors. I went through each box score and 7 of his errors are listed as fielding and 3 errors are listed as throwing. May be a small sample and an error is an error. While he still needs to improve maybe the throws are better. He still is on a pace for 40 errors.
  9. I saw Garrison pitch for the first time last night and what I saw was an average AA pitcher whose fastball did not exceed 85 mph and most of his fastballs were 83(according to the stadium gun which historically don't work all that well). Midland's starting pitcher was throwing 88-89 and the pitcher who followed Garrison, Gwaltney, did reach 91 so the gun was working relatively speaking. Garrison did throw some nice breaking pitches and he did keep his pitches down most of the time. He was being squeezed by the umpire who refused to call any pitch on the outside of the plate a strike. On some occasions Garrison was all over the plate. Twice he walked batters after a 1-2 count. In addition Midland had no left handed hitting position players in the lineup. But overall, if I was a scout, I wouldn't have been impressed. I hope to see him pitch again because I was disappointed last night. I expected more.
  10. I believe the 40 man roster has to be updated by all major league teams soon after the conclusion of the World Series. The Brewers current roster as published by Brewerfan.net is a document that may change quite dramatically. The Brewers current roster has only 38 players because the addition of Graffanino and Koskie is not official. Presumably, the 40 or less players on that roster are the players the Brewers value the most either as components of the 2008 team, as trade value, or as players who must be protected from the rule 5 draft. There are obvious players who won't be included in the new roster: Cordero, Miller, Graffanino, Koskie, Linebrink and I suspect Jenkins. There certainly are a lot of players who may or may not be included; Anderson, Aquino, Dillon, Jones, King, McClung, Mench, Nix, Rivera, Rottino, and Stetter. I wouldn't include Wise but I know others would. I would include Dillon on my final list. Still depending on how one evaluates the players there could be 15-17 players on the 40 man bubble. The wild card is which minor leaguers have to be protected who currently are not protected. Which of the following players have to be protected? Rogers, Wahpepah, Salome, Chapman, Palmisano, Fermaint, Hinton, others? As an unrelated side anyone advocating a stronger pitching staff and better defense for the 2008 team should go to see the movie, The Final Season. I saw a preview this past Tuesday and its is a good but not great movie, primarily because the outcome is known. I was asked my opinion of the movie by a studio rep and told her they ought to send a copy to the Brewers as a training film.
  11. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Only the age at which a prospect is signed determines their eligibility for the Rule 5 draft.
  12. I would not trade Sheets at this time for the same reasons others wouldn't. The Brewers are not a playoff team without a No. 1 and since he has had so many injuries, although not arm related, his trade value is not high. I would take a different tact. Offer to tear up his contract for next year and try to sign him for 3 years at $15 M/yr. If he has a great year in the next two years consider trading when his value would be high. That approach wouldn't break the bank, he gets an extra $4M next year and the Brewers get a good pitcher for three more years.
  13. In another thread I suggested looking at 'failed' starters like Kip Wells for the pen. He was throwing at 96 mph with a great looking breaking ball the other nite. There is an added bonus-he might be able to pitch more than one inning at a time. Also another choice might be Adam Pettyjohn who had a good year last year and does especially well against left handed hitters. Since he is a starter he to could pitch more than one inning and probably would be good in situations where thee lineup alternates left and right handed hitters. I am not a Wise supporter any more because he can't pitch more than one inning at a time or two days in a row. His only advantage is that he is cheap relatively speaking of course.
  14. I think you continue to take the best player available modified slightly by your need for a position player or a pitcher. A couple of nights ago Kip Wells was throwing 96 mph and had a great breaking ball. Ya, I know Fielder hit one out but Wells still looked good. Maybe the Brewers should look for a failed starter who can relieve and just maybe he may be able to pitch more than one inning.
