  1. I've kind of hoped for Sleeth since I heard Loewen signed. I would like to either draft a college pitcher or high school position player, although I have to say that Alliston sounds awefully tempting.
  2. Thanks Mass. I don't think I'll be able to go to Friday's game, but I should be at Sunday's (with a notepad and pen) and possibly Monday's.
  3. Hey Mass, just wondering if you can come up with the probables for High Desert this weekend. I believe they have an odd series that goes Fri-Sun-Mon. I'd like to check them out here in San Jose (and of course I'd give updates)
  4. Thanks for the late night box score link, DHonks! - MassBrew High Desert 8, Stockton (Rangers) 0 High Desert Site Game Summary: STOCKTON, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks earned their second shutout of the 2003 season, by blanking the Stockton Ports by a final score of 8-0 at Billy Hebert Field in Stockton on Tuesday night. The win by the Mavs ends a five-game losing streak and pulls them to within 6.5 games of first place in the Cal League?s South Division. Starting pitcher Chris Saenz (5-4), coming off his toughest outing of the season against Rancho Cucamonga last Thursday, was brilliant. Saenz worked six scoreless innings, allowing just four base hits. Tony Stavros came out of the pen and threw three perfect innings, striking out six of the nine men that he faced, to earn his first save of the year in a Mavericks uniform. The Mavs took the lead in the fourth, as Froilan Villanueva?s two-out single knocked in Johnny Raburn to make it a 1-0 lead off Ports starter Jason Andrew (5-5) The Ports threatened in the sixth, as Drew Meyer had a one-out triple and represented the tying run at third with one out. However, after a walk to Jason Bourgeios, Jason Botts grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the biggest threat of the night for the Ports. It was the third double play that the Mavs turned behind Saenz in six innings. Stavros came on in the seventh and fanned all three men he faced. The Mavs opened things up by scoring six times in the eighth. The Ports pitching staff issued a total of four walks in the inning, which all scored. Villanueva?s two-run single made it 5-0. After Chris Morris walked, Brian Foster?s two-run home run capped the inning for a 7-0 lead. The home run is the 10th for Foster, who is the active team-leader in that category. Dan Boyd picked up a run-scoring single in the ninth for extra insurance, as Raburn came in to score from second base. Boyd finished the night at 1-3 and extended his hitting streak to a season-high eight games. In the ninth, Stavros continued to dominate striking out two of the three men he faced, including Jason Botts to end the game. The Mavs send Dan Hall (4-4) to the hill on Wednesday night in the rubber game of the three-game set. Going for the Ports will be Justin Echols (1-4) at 7:05 (9:05 Central). High Desert Box Score: RHP Chris Saenz struck out 99 in 74.1 IP at Beloit last year, allowing only 59 hits; guaranteed he's the's best 7.61 ERA pitcher around -- he'll be fine - MassBrew... 6. my first thought is that today's Indy starter will be JAson Childers. Also, just tuned into the huntsville game, and they're down 4-1 in the 11th. Apparently Jones threw well. Edit...Parker goes tomorrow. Daryl Clark w/3 hits today, including one in the 11th. He's 3-5 on the day...2 singles and a double. 10-28 (.357) in his last 8 games. With 2 outs and 2 on, Barnwell comes up as the potential tying run, Kade Johnson with a bat in the on deck circle. Another update...Barnwell pops up, game over. Stars stole 16 of 19 bases in the series.

  8. also, I don't think anyone mentioned this. On tonight's postgame show, Jim Powell mentioned that Hall is still sitting out with tendinitis in his left wrist.
  9. Al, where have you heard that? Everything I've heard him say is that OBP and OPS are two areas where he would like to improve the organization.
  10. any chance we can reacquire someone like Osting?
  11. somebody scheduled a baseball game, but a track meet broke out. Also, nice to see Guerrero with 1/3 the extra base hits he had in AA, and also it seems like almost as many hits already (joke there). High Desert winning boxscore

  13. thanks for the updates Mass. As always you did an awesome job. Sure is great to see Mike Jones doing well and to hear that Hendrickson starts tomorrow. Let's keep our fingers crossed for Gold and Schaub Also, might tomorrow be a possible start for JEff Robinson? I think he last threw maybe a day or two ago, but it wasn't very long. I guess I would expect him to at least get a few innings.
  14. Nice...thanks for that article. It's also cool cause Sean Luellwitz went to Marquette High with me in Milwaukee. At the time he was considered one of the best offensive and defensive catchers in the state.
  15. Krynzel's been compared to Steve Finley - I think there also was a comparison to Paul O'Neill. He's also been compared to Johnny Damon. Steve Finley is interesting, because he didn't show much power till he was aging and got to Arizona, when his batting averages took a dive. I guess at this point, until Krynzel shows me something different, I'm looking at him as a potential left-handed Rickey Henderson. He should have 15+ homer potential, outstanding speed, and he is learning to walk. Is he there yet? no. But the key is that's the kind of impact player he has the potential to be (I can sense all the OPS fanatics on this board cringing as I'm basically saying he could be a basestealer).
  16. Nice to see Krynzel wil 3 hits, a steal, and 3 walks. Unfortunately also a CS and 2 K's. Still that seems like a lot of walks lately. DHonks -- thanks for box score links -- MB
  17. High Desert Site Game Summary: Mavs Earn First Shutout Since 2001SAN BERNARDINO, CA- Not since July 23rd, 2001 have the High Desert Mavericks shut out an opponent. On Wednesday night, the Mavericks earned their third straight win, blanking the Inland Empire 66ers by a score of 1-0. Chris Saenz, Jeff Robinson and Bobby Bystrowski combined on a four-hit shutout as the Mavericks won their third straight on the road, giving them five wins in their last six games overall. Matt Parker combined with Jim Lynch on a one-hit shutout at Mavericks Stadium back on July 23rd, 2001, as the Mavs beat the San Jose Giants, 4-0. The Mavs needed just one run on Wednesday night, as the only run of the game came in the fifth inning. Scott Candelaria doubled with one out, his second of three hits on the night. Todd West would then hit a two-out chopper to third base. Hunter Brown's off-balance throw pulled the first baseman off the bag and gave Candelaria the chance to score, as he beat the throw from first baseman John Castellano. The run would stand up as the bullpen would hold strong for a second straight night. Robinson, in only his second appearance of the year, went three hitless innings. Bystrowski followed with a perfect ninth, earning his team-best eighth save of the year, tying him for first in the Cal League. Chris Saenz started and had one of his best outings all year. In five innings, he struck out seven men and walked just one as he won his second straight decision. Inland Empire's Troy Cate (2-3) was the tough-luck loser, giving up just one unearned run for the loss. The Mavs will attempt their first three-game sweep, as they send Dan Hall (4-1) to the hill on Thursday night. The 66ers will throw southpaw Ryan Ketchner (3-1) at 7:05 (9:05 Central). The Mavs return home this Friday to face Stockton. High Desert Box Score: Kudos again to Scott Candelaria (.284) on his big night; this Maverick pitching staff has given itself a huge confidence boost the past few days, with strong performances from many... 18. Come on HD! If they win, then we'll have all 5 wins today. Edit: Well, they came through. How's that, 5 for 5 on the day for the organization. (When all the farm teams win, we give the thread the five-star treatment -- the Brewer win was a nice bonus! - MassBrew.) High Desert 8, Inland Empire (Mariners) 5, 11 innings High Desert Site Game Summary: Mavs Prevail Behind Solid BullpenSAN BERNARDINO, CA- Kade Johnson's first hit since returning from his injured right ankle helped the Mavs win their second straight game, as the High Desert Mavericks defeated the Inland Empire 66ers on Tuesday night at Arrowhead Credit Union Park, by a score of 8-5 in 11 innings. Johnson's go-ahead, two-run double would have never been possible had it not been for an amazing performance by the High Desert Bullpen. Aaron Dean, Justin Gordon, Justin Backsmeyer and Bobby Bystrowski combined to allow just two runs, only one earned, in ten innings of work. Dean came on for J.M. Gold who left with an unspecified injury after just one inning, and the Mavs trailing 3-0. Dean worked scoreless relief for four straight innings, before running into trouble in the sixth. The Mavs had taken the lead earlier in the inning, scoring four runs off the 66ers bullpen. Scott Candelaria and Ralph Santana each had two-run singles to give the Mavs a 5-3 lead. They did however load the bases, and get nothing for their effort, as reliever Justin Blood struck out Froilan Villanueva, Daryl Clark and Kade Johnson. The 66ers tied it with two runs off Dean in the bottom of the inning, as Eddie Menchaca picked up a clutch hit to drive in a run. The tying run scored on the same play as center fielder Chris Morris had trouble fielding the single to center. Each bullpen pitched well thereafter, as neither team had very many chances. The 66ers best scoring opportunity came off Gordon in the ninth, when runners were at first and second with one out. Backsmeyer (1-1) was called out of the pen, and threw just one pitch as John Castellano lined out to Morris in center field. Morris made the catch and threw to second base, doubling off Shin-Soo Choo, who was running on contact. The Mavs finally took the lead in the top of the 11th, as Morris doubled to lead off the inning. After Villanueva's sac bunt, the 66ers chose to walk Clark intentionally. That set the stage for Johnson's game-winning hit off Brian Strelitz (2-1). Johnson would later score on a hit by Candelaria, who finished the night with a season-best four RBIs. Bystrowski worked a scoreless 11th inning for his team-leading seventh save of the year. The win gives the Mavs two straight wins overall, and two straight road wins for the first time this season. The Mavs have also won four of their last five games overall. The 66ers started Seattle Mariners closer Kaz Sasaki who has been on the disabled list with a sore lower back. Sasaki threw 19 pitches and faced four men in his first career rehab appearance with the 66ers. He struck out two and walked one without allowing a run or a hit. On Wednesday night, the Mavs send Chris Saenz (2-2) to the hill against Troy Cate (2-2) of the 66ers. Game time on Wednesday night is at 7:05. The Mavs return home this Friday to face Stockton. T--2:45. A--2104High Desert 11, Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 9 Let me be the first to express some concern about Kade Johnson. He starts, goes 0-1, and leaves the game. I'm keeping my fingers crossed - DHonks Mavs announcer Mike Lindskog provides details below, DHonks. Thanks for getting all the late box scores online - Massbrew High Desert Site Game Summary: Mavs Finally End Road Skid, Win 11-9 LANCASTER, CA ? April couldn't be farther away. After capping a horrible April with eight straight losses, the High Desert Mavericks opened the month of May on a positive note. Brian Foster knocked in a season-best five RBIs as the Mavs rallied for an exciting 11-9 victory over the Lancaster JetHawks on Thursday night from the Hangar in Lancaster. The win by the Mavs not only ended a season-worst eight game losing streak, it ended a road losing streak of 11 games, and gave the Mavs their first win away from Friendly Mavericks Stadium since a 5-1 win on Opening Night in Lake Elsinore. Mavs catcher Kade Johnson left Thursday's game with what first appeared to be a right knee injury in the bottom of the first inning. After having an x-ray taken, it was discovered Johnson has only a high ankle sprain and will be further evaluated on Friday. Foster, who took over for Johnson in the bottom of the first inning defensively, stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the third inning, trailing 3-2. Foster sent a ground ball down the third base line that scored three runs and gave the Mavs the lead for good at 5-3. Foster later added a two-run shot, his first since April 20th, officially breaking out of an offensive slump. Mavs starter Chris Saenz was streaky throughout, allowing three in the first, then striking out the side in the second. He allowed a run in the third as the JetHawks pulled to within 6-4, then struck out two more in a perfect fourth inning. The Mavs piled on five more in the fifth, with Foster's seventh home run of the year, and run-scoring hits from Dan Boyd and Ralph Santana. Lance Cormier (3-3) took the loss, allowing the brunt of the damage from the Maverick offense, which scored more than five runs for the first time on the seven-game road trip. Saenz (2-2) struggled in the sixth, allowing three runs as the JetHawks pulled to within two at 11-9. Justin Gordon came on and held off the JetHawks but did allow an unearned run in 2.2 innings. Tony Stavros and Bobby Bystrowski worked the final inning in innings of scoreless relief. Bystrowski threw just one pitch, as Sergio Santos grounded out to first with two men on in the ninth. The save is Bystrowski's team-leading fifth of the year. The Mavs return home on Friday, May 2nd to battle Rancho Cucamonga at 7:05 (9:05 Central) in. RHP Dan Hall (3-1) faces off against Steve Shell of the Quakes. High Desert Box Score: RHP Chris Saenz will take the win, but can't be overly pleased with his pitching line... He had to be helped off the field and it looked like he was in bigtime pain. Greg Schaub did color with me and we were both convinced that it was the right knee. They rushed him to the doctor and got an xray and discovered only a high ankle sprain on the right foot which is great news!!! He will probably sit a few days. He is is walking on it, but very gingerly. It had torn ACL and out for the year written all over it!!! A miserable month came to an end for the High Desert Mavericks, as they dropped their eighth straight game overall in Lancaster, losing to the JetHawks by a final score of 8-4 on Wednesday night. The Mavs finished the month of April with an eleven-game road losing streak and are now 8-18 on the season. Former Maverick Scott Barber (3-1) picked up his second win against the Mavs this year, with eight innings of solid effort. Kade Johnson's two-run home run to right field in the sixth inning was all that Barber allowed in his season-high eight innings of work. With the score tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, new Mavs reliever Kenny Ray (0-1) allowed the JetHawks to take the lead for good, as Dan Uggla picked up an RBI single to score Josh Kroeger. Lancaster took a 4-2 lead, as Mayobanex Santana picked up an RBI double. Ray was lifted with one out and runners at second and third for reliever Aaron Dean. Dean struck out Mike DiRosa, but allowed a two-out, two-run double off the bat of Danny Richar for a 6-2 JetHawks lead. Richar would then score on an RBI hit by Marland Williams. The JetHawks made it 8-2 in the eighth, as Dean allowed a solo home run to Mike DiRosa. The Mavs threatened in the ninth, bringing the tying run to the on-deck circle, but couldn't get him to the plate, as Johnny Raburn and Dan Boyd each grounded into fielder's choices for the final two outs of the game. Mavs starter J.M. Gold looked impressive in his first start of the season. Gold allowed two runs, just one earned in four innings of work. Lancaster finally got to Gold with two runs in the fourth inning, as Uggla collected an RBI double for a 1-0 lead. Mike Thiessen would score on a throwing error by Kade Johnson as Lancaster upped it's lead to 2-0. Ray, who appeared in his first game as a Maverick, came on and worked a 1-2-3 fifth inning, before allowing the JetHawks the lead in the sixth. Froilan Villanueva had three hits and an RBI for the Mavs, to lead them offensively. Johnson's home run gives him nine for the year. He also now leads the Cal League with 27 RBIs. Mark Ernster had two hits and extended his hitting streak to nine straight games. Boyd also collected two base hits for High Desert. The Mavs will try to end the road madness on Thursday as Chris Saenz (1-2) goes to the hill against Lancaster's Lance Cormier (3-2) at 7:15. The Mavs return home on Friday, May 2nd to battle Rancho Cucamonga. High Desert Box Score: Here's the High Desert box score as well. I was worried about Gold's performance based on the line score, but it seems he faired decently. And can we say enough about Kade Johnson so far this year? - DHonks GAME DATE: 4/30/03 HIGH DESERT 4 AT LANCASTER 8 YTD YTD HIGH DESERT AB R H BI AVG LANCASTER AB R H BI AVG J.Raburn SS 5 0 1 1 .314 M.Williams CF 5 0 1 1 .280 D.Boyd CF 4 0 2 0 .269 J.Jones LF 4 0 1 0 .304 D.Clark LF 3 1 0 0 .375 J.Kroeger RF 4 1 2 0 .370 K.Johnson CAT 3 1 1 2 .351 S.Santos SS 3 1 1 0 .280 J.Belcher RF 4 0 0 0 .333 M.Thiessen DH 3 2 1 0 .333 M.Ernster 3B 4 1 2 0 .400 D.Uggla 3B 4 1 2 2 .293 B.Foster DH 3 1 0 0 .250 M.Santana 1B 3 1 1 1 .277 F.Villanueva 1B 4 0 3 1 .364 M.DiRosa CAT 4 1 1 1 .136 R.Santana 2B 3 0 1 0 .265 D.Richar 2B 4 1 1 2 .325 J.Gold PIT 0 0 0 0 .000 S.Barber PIT 0 0 0 0 .000 K.Ray PIT 0 0 0 0 .000 J.Castllanos PIT 0 0 0 0 .000 A.Dean PIT 0 0 0 0 .000 TOTALS 33 4 10 4 TOTALS 34 8 11 7 HIGH DESERT 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 2- 4 10 3 LANCASTER 0 0 0 2 0 5 0 1 X- 8 11 0 E--K.Johnson, J.Belcher, K.Ray.
