  1. Pop Quiz: Sheets has thrown 103 pitches in his second start, but is dominating a very good offensive club. Do you try to get 7 out of him? I would think you let him try for one more. He's dominating, and he threw few pitches last time out. Edit: Seeing Durrington there answers the question
  2. Not only is Sheets throwing his curve perfectly nearly every time, but the Astros hitters are being frozen by some and missing the others. I don't recall him ever striking out more than 1 or 2 guys in a game on it, but he probably has 3 or 4 on the curve today, 1 on the changeup, and the rest on the 4-seamer Edit: Also, Sheets has looked pissed out there. I've never seen this focus from him before. I love it.
  3. How come he didn't score on the groundout by Helms? He would have been out by 15 steps
  4. Darron Sutton--before the game--mentioned Yost said he's starting Ginter not to bench Spivey, but because he feels he's got to get Ginter 350-400 at bats at least.
  5. If it's just tendonitis or something like that, it should be beneficial for Manny to work in the warm air in High Desert. Hendrickson did very well there, so maybe they figure with Parra's mentality he an benefit from some time in High Desert. Maybe dominating in that league could be beneficial
  6. I would say that it's not a favorable pitching matchup. From the times I've seen Redding, I would claim he's as good as Sheets, possibly better. He throws in the mid 90s, has a good changeup, and has other solid secondary pitches.
  7. And Lopes/Yost had Sanchez playing basically on the warning track so nothing could get over his head. I seem to remember them constantly wanting him to play shallower, but Sanchez's inability to track flyballs and drop-step hurt the team. I think Jenkins has the same problem, hence why he's been allowed to play so deep for so long. He's able to catch them at the wall, but it seems each game a soft liner to straight-away left falls in because he has to run so far to get back to a normal starting spot.
  8. I'll go along with you on Capuano; he hasn't proved much at all, but in his limited opportunities he has looked like the kind of pitcher who should be better than Davis and Obermuller -- that is, good peripherals. I don't believe anyone pointed this out, but Brandon Webb's AAA numbers weren't great because of playing in Tucson, and he appears legit. Capuano had numbers that were easily as good--if not better--in AAA in Tucson (and less than a year after Tommy John surgery). So I guess with that in mind, how good can Cappy be? Also anyone else notice his mechanics look a lot like Nance's? Good to see we now have some pitchers who can hit (Oby and Cappy, along w/Brooks)
  9. I disagree with the critique of Hernandez. Without question he is pitching into horrible luck. He didnt get hit hard today at all. Squibbers, bloops and horrible defense had more to do with his line than his pitches. So failing to find the strike zone had nothing to do with it? I'm not worried about him, but the Adrian Hernandez I saw today had little control and little command (if there is a difference). He did not throw strikes, and when he did, they weren't what he was looking for Pods had several bad throws, one that should have nailed a runner at the plate for sure First off, there was shoddy play. Jenkins' miscues were partly his fault for how deep he plays, and partly bad luck in the corner. As for Pods, he was 1 for 3 in throwing guys out at the plate. I don't want to blame him, when in reality it's not his fault that runners are reaching third in the first place. Too many baserunners was the simple problem
  10. I'm guessing Ginter gets his first start of the season tomorrow and Hall gets a start Sunday. Ginter started yesterday.
  11. With Counsell, he is right around his average...and Spivey, well, who knows....but they look as good as Royce did at the plate!!! You're talking about 4 games for each, against two outstanding teams. Heck, with our April schedule we're already about 2 wins ahead of our expected pace. I can't criticize any of our hitters after 5/162 of the season!
  12. and that guy in the Astros lineup...Berkman...is hitting .083. Boy, he sure stinks
  13. I can't agree rluzinski. Wes had very good control today, changing speeds and placing pitches where he wanted against a VERY tough lineup. He also showed no signs of being tired. I was kind of surprised Yost pulled him when he did. Yes, we should have a good pen. But when the pitcher is holding his own against a tough lineup, and has a rather low pitch count for the 6th inning, I would stick with him.
  14. Ball doesn't seem to be carrying well. In St. Louis, both the Grieve and Pods balls might have been gone.
  15. Wade Miller is at 67 pitches through 4. The goal is to get the Astros starters out before the 8th when the game goes to Lidge and Dotel
  16. And I still don't know what role Yost was expecting Durrington to play on the team. hence why I felt we'd get more use out of a 13th pitcher. I'm more concerned with Hall's playing time than Moeller's Hall will play enough. I figure some weeks one start, some weeks 3 starts. Plus he'll pinch hit another couple of times a week. In the end, he'll probably play in 120 or so games, which is more than enough for a player who has never met a pitch he wanted to take and should probably be in AAA based on minor league performance. At the same time, I like Billy and think he'll learn a lot as a part-time player off the bench.
  17. Just looked up the numbers (after the DP), and I was surprised to see Obermueller has been a very strong groundball pitcher so far in parts of two seasons.
  18. Well, Bennett was hot in his first start, and had a big spring, so I don't mind him playing 2/5ths of the games for now. Plus, it does keep Moeller fresher, and I'm sure Yost does know more than I do about how easy it is for a catcher to wear down
  19. Indy Boxscore : Although he's one of my favorite prospects, welcome to AAA Mr. Krynzel (0-5, 4k's) That's the only one up as of now, and I'm off to bed - DHonks From MassBrew: It's going to be easier to read if I link to these morning box scores and not cut and paste -- game logs this year, too! Indy Box Score: Adrian Hernandez, it's a short leash -- check out Victor Santos and Matt Wise; Chris Coste gets the 3B start over Scott Sheldon and hits cleanup; J.J. Hardy down low in the lineup... www.sportsnetwork.com/mer...MEID=14040 Indy Game Log: www.sportsnetwork.com/mer...MEID=14040
  20. Solid menu for the first LR. With Capuano going, we have 3 VERY talented young lefties going, and AAA might be Hendrickson or De La Rosa (one would expect)
  21. In all seriousness, it's going to take Sheets several weeks to catch up to Kinney in the batting race. and if Kinney has indeed learned to finish batters, then Sheets will have to start hitting well to do it. The thought of Matt having only 10 starts meant Ben had 33 starts to get his hits in.
  22. Good to see Eldred regain his velocity and stuff. I've seen several hit 90 tonight. Last year he was around 83 or 84 whenever I saw him. Of course, his fastball still looks extremely straight.
  23. So is our magic number to win the division at 160, 160.5, or 161?
  24. I really like the mlb extra innings package free preview. I may just pay the money and get it. Like right now I'm watching the White Sox and Royals.
  25. These are how the early Cards-Brewers games were last year. Didn't the Brewers have a comfortable opening day lead last year until a comeback led by Matt Morris? I know he did it to us at least once last year where a big double or triple broke out back. Still, it's good to see us finish off a team like the Cards.. now let's take the series and give Kinney some of the ol' Franklin run support
