  2. A lot of posters here think he will because he was "brought up too soon". I bet some GM's think the same thing. How many guy are given chance after chance in the majors because they have talent and some team thinks they can figure it out? Or how one good season out of a career of failure leads to a GM making a bad decision? I would think Gomez could bring back a back end of the rotation, youngish starter. If Washington doesn't sign Bourn this offseason they'll be looking for a CF, maybe Texas if Hamilton leaves. That seems pretty optimistic for Gomez, I think teams will take their chances than on a one-year guy. Then again, seeing what Melky did in San Fran, have to wonder what people would give up. He probably won't cost too much to keep, almost better off seeing if he can show it again.
  3. Can't hurt to give Henderson a shot, although he does appear to have walk issues... We will see, as he also strikes out a free. Interesting though that they haven't announced anything yet, even if it's just a DFA. This means they have 2 roster moves coming today in some form or another. Trade is not out of the realm of possibility...
  4. If they're going to start Gomez vs. a RHP, he should be down in the order. vs. a LHP, no problem with him batting higher.
  5. Uggla hits more homeruns. That's about it.
  6. Right. The major issue with WAR (particularly by Fangraphs) is its major inclusion of defensive statistics. UZR is effective but flawed, it's skewing the WAR values of guys like Carlos Ruiz, who look way more value in the midst of a hot streak because of the position he plays. Of course, reading WAR midseason will show some inconsistent results. That's why I shake my head when I see Ruiz rated higher in value than Andrew McCutchen. Like you said, it's how you read and interpret them in context. Defense is not overrated, but its overvalued I think. Case in point: Gerardo Parra. Great defense in LF, pretty good hitter for what he brings. But who in the world would take him over Braun? Anyone? The 2011 Brewers are case in point. Very good offensive club, very good pitching, couldn't really field all that great, and came up two wins short of the World Series.
  7. This is crazy, but good for Thornburg. Even if it's one start now, it's good experience for the future. Wish his assignment wasn't the Blue Jays though... *gulp*
  8. One of the bigger ones I heard was 8th round OF Edgardo Rivera. He's a high schooler from Puerto Rico with 70-80 speed, good contact, and a true CF. Very raw, but lots of intriguing tools, just not much power. 39th round SS/OF Derek Jones is another. It's interesting because he is a Canadian high schooler who is signable, yet they waited till the 39th round, which makes me think he's signable if the price is right, probably a high price. Another potential high upside CF, this time with power. Very projectable yet. We'll see on him. The Brewers appeared to go after a lot of the high upside, tough sign guys early, maybe to show how serious they were about signing them. And seeing as how there's word that a lot of higher picks are ready to sign already, it's possible some of those guys already have deals in place. 16th round 1B Adam Giacalone was also said to be a difficult sign...till he signed earlier today
  9. Buck Farmer would be a really nice sign. He's a third round talent this year that could potentially become a late first/supplemental round talent next year if he goes back. Sounds like he has a nice mid to back-end rotation ceiling, which is not awful for a 15th round pick.
  10. Reggie is correct. Aaron only played in the 57 and 58 series where we went 1-1. Lew Burdette won 3 games and the 57 MVP. The other is Bob Gibson Never would have guessed Gibson. Who was WS MVP for the Marlins in '03?
  11. I'll go with Reggie Jackson and Hank Aaron to the multi-WS MVP question. If not, I give up.
  12. I feel like I should know this. Totally random: Babe Ruth and Josh Beckett? Edit: Switch Beckett with Reggie Jackson.
