  1. Couldn't have said it better myself. Until Friday night, i thought only Vlad could hit a HR on a shoelace ball. That was pure luck, and like you said, 9 times out of 10 we win that game. Hoffman will be fine.Nah, soft pitches out of the zone are easy pickins for those batters with the guts to go after them and put the fat part of the bat on the ball. Stavinoha didn't have anything to lose. He pounded that into the second deck. Yeah maybe 5 out of 10 times it just gets over the wall, but it was a sure thing going off the bat. If you're going to throw away a pitch, why not do it low and inside? You don't hit generally 2nd deckers off of the handle.
  2. My sense is that Melvin will do what he does best and sit on his hands and it will probably hurt us in the end. He may get some undervalued offers, but I don't think the demand for a 1st baseman for a year or so will be there, especially at the price of multiple valuable prospects, which teams aren't giving up as easily anymore. The big teams will wait for free agency, where they will have a lot of other choices to help manipulate offer numbers. Melvin will balk at the early offers, and by next season will get offers of even less value. I just have a feeling that we'll end up keeping Fielder until he goes to free agency, have a token low-ball offer, and get a compensatory draft pick or two.
  3. Looking at the data, I don't think the ERA is as important as the total run production. The median wighted value is probably 2-3 runs against all of these "4.75" ERA pitchers. The median value or even the mode value is probably more accurate based on per game basis because those individual values appear more frequently (reality) than any computed average (formulated). There are way more 2 runs and 1 runs on the list than anything else. The median and mode run value is around 2. The median ERA is 3.38 and the mode ERA is 3.00. Considering that the average ERA is over 5 after weighing, it seems like a skewed value, as the Brewers are certainly not putting up over 5 runs in most games against these guys. I haven't done any deep analysis, but thats just what jumps out to me with the data.
  4. Wow, how did the Cardinals get away with playing 164 games in a single season? They must have cheated and snuck in 2 more games. The Brewers sure could have used 2 more games to play last year. The Brewers are going nowhere with 83 wins this year. Right now we're further back from 1st than we ever were at any point last year.
  5. This team is absolutely done. Complete group of underachievers. Next time we won't overrate these guys on paper. Terrible in-game decision making by both coaches and players. No reliable closer, and no lead is safe against any team. Add in the horrible pre-season oversights, and an unexpected injury, and these guys have folded. This team is equivalent to the Florida Marlins right now, but with less promise. When they are 10 games out by end of June, its official. This is where the batters start to bear down a little too hard at the plate, the strikeout numbers inflate, and they march themselves right out of reasonable contention. The bubble has burst.
  6. Weeks OBP and OPS are at career lows right now. He is striking out 25% of the time, and even his walk frequency is declining. He's just been a tease for everyone since he came up to the majors. The breakout year just isn't happening. He has the ability to make some difficult plays on defense, but he flubs a lot of routine plays. Most of his mistakes have not been showing up in the error column. With not a lot of depth on the bench right now, its not a good situation. With more floundering at the plate, Weeks has a relatively high probability of overextending himself and making the DL again. It may not be the optimal solution, but it would force the Brewers to seriously consider another option.
  7. I'm pretty sure that most fans know about this site and have visited it at least a few times. I actually enjoy WSSP because they don't sugar coat the Brewers like the flagship does. Sure there are some callers who don't know what they are talking about, but the hosts know who has a clue and who doesn't. There are some very good callers as well.. They run down the important plays in the game, explain why certain strategies are smart or flawed, and pretty much cover it all without being total "homers". Every time we hear from Ned, the explanations are just horrible and doesn't allow any reporters to actually challenge him with questions. Its either "it happens" or "it was an aggressive play". Ned's answers are really hard to swallow, especially when he blows games. The radio guys have to fill in what isn't being said from what little they have to work with, talk to the insiders and beat writers directly, and frankly they do a pretty good job.
  8. Booooooosh. Sounds like a clobbered seal.
  9. I don't have the exact page, but last season the Brewers field starters were averaging under 140 games played, while the average in the division was closer to 145. Only 2 Brewers played over 140 games, with Hart barely making the cut, playing only 140. I'm not going to push the issue, but the guys had a lot of days off for various reasons and platoons. I'd rather have us using our best when we needed every game possible, however I kept my boos at home. 5 less days off might have helped us get those 2 wins that were needed.
  10. The President gets booed everywhere, in the US, and especially over in Europe. Thats a given. I'm just surprised that the plastic beer bottles and trash didn't get hurled onto the field. However, throwing things is more of a Cub fan thing. If he gets off with just boos, its a good day for the secret service. As far as the Sunday lineup thing, Yost tended to rest his starting position players more than the average, so I tend to hate following the Brewers on those days. Putting guys like Nix or Barnwell in the 2 hole or proudly featuring Counsel in major batting roles on these days just annoy me to no end. Its as if Sunday games don't mean anything in the standings. If the team wants people taking the day off, the fans can take the day off, sleep in, and not bother attending. For the ones who do, if they want to boo, its within their right.
  11. I'm fine with booing a stupid move, play, or a gross display of incompetence. When players and coaches aren't thinking or are simply distracted when they should be paying attention, the fans deserve better than that and boos are richly deserved.. I fully expect fan to boo when Turnbow pulls his bases loaded, 4 pitch walk type of crap. I expect booing when Sveum sends a player to the plate who is out by 15 feet. Boneheaded basrunning errors deserve boos. When, Estrada leisurely strolled to 1st base, he was begging for boos. When Yost makes his headscratching, boneheaded late game moves, I fully expect boos. Sure, I feel like booing when Ned puts out his Sunday lineup, but you can't do it unless the specific display of incompetence is right in front of us.
