  1. Driving at sunset can be pretty hazardous in Arizona. At this time of year sunset is at about 7:40. If start times are an hour beforehand, you avoid significant desert glare as well as traffic delay.
  2. He bailed on the team. Its just not a good legacy to leave the team just because you don't have a contract for next season. If he finishes out the season in a decent position, he gets another job in a year or so, much like Ned Yost did. But now, I don't think he gets anything better than some low order bench coach anywhere. He should have handled it more like Macha (only 2 years older) without anything remaining, who never complained one bit.
  3. I agree. With a sleep disorder, you generally wake up several times a night, and are often easily startled or awoken. It shouldn't make you late. Its not like he's waking up at 6-7am and getting to a job at 8am late like the rest of society. Millions of people have this to some degree. I even think I do to some extent. A little more discipline and keeping to a schedule is what he needs. I am sure that he was warned on several occasions, went over the limit, and then they had to sit him down and tell him that "we can't have this".
  4. Only the top 70 or so qualified players in the NL have OBP's over .300. The remaining 15 or so have the under. Even SF has a couple qualified guys under .300 OBP. I don't think its a number we should sweat about.
  5. What significance does having projected .300 OBP hitters actually have? Is this some magical marker of success versus failure?
  6. I really cannot imagine this guy hijacking a roster spot for the rest of the year, but that is what it looks like this is what Melvin wants to do. He really pulled the trigger too fast on a backup SS, and frankly I don't see this guy as a good pinch hitter at all in the majors. It is going to be a shame, because I have a feeling that Boggs declines his DFA, as he almost did last time. I honestly think he has a lot more potential as a hitter than Wilson.
  7. Well, for one, i don't think you can't claim a guy off waivers and not put him on the active roster.
  8. Well if we didn't have to have 3 catchers, we might have room for him. I guess nobody trusts that he can play a spell at 3rd base anymore?
  9. Punto has no home run power whatsoever. Its not like he hasn't been called a gaping hole on a team either. He's best used as a utility guy, and really should not have more than 250 PA's in a season. This guy's WAR and UZR last year was overrated, yet he still had the lowest fielding percentage on the team, 2nd most in errors, and only played half the year at 3rd base. Yuni is mired with his road woes this year pushing his overall average down. Now he's .324/.342/.465/.807 at home. I can't favor just dumping him altogether and waste potential like that because of his overall numbers. Give Counsell the position every other day on the road. Yuni isn't perfect defensively, but he has made some nice plays.
  10. Yuni continues to do well at home. Frankly, I don't think Counsell hits a homer, or comes close to 3 for 6 if in that Colorado game. Still hitting over .300 at home.
  11. 7 hits and 6 runs in his past 8 games. I don't think you can be that horrified by that. The guy had an OBP of .333 this month, which is pretty good compared to his career. The improvement is coming, slowly but surely. Its still to early to be fixating on averages yet. Ron has to just keep putting him out there at #2, and not get sidetracked by the naysayers like the Journal Sentinel. Frankly, the article is a bit disrespectful.
  12. The hate for Betancourt is way overblown. The guy hits .309 at home, with an OBP of .329. If he were truly bad, he wouldn't have those kind of numbers at home. If he can replicate just some of that on the road, he will do fine. He just hasn't gotten used to the NL on the road yet. The guy has seen the AL through his whole career, and facing a lot of new stadiums, pitchers, and personnel for the first time.
  13. Frankly, it seems Gomez's talents are wasted at a #8 position, and I prefer him at #2. The there isn't much threat of a bunt before the pitchers spot, and the pitcher isn't generally going to drive Gomez in if he gets on base. Right now, there is nobody else who looks proficient enough to handle the #2 spot. Morgan just didn't look that good is the short time between his injuries.
  14. Jeez, its as if nobody has actually eaten any good food in this city? Anything that is not fried, heavy in meat, or full of cheese? The kabob is just sticking sausage pieces on a stick. Potine and curds is just fries and cheese. Chicken parmesan is cheap fried chicken, cheese, and tomato sauce. The tilapia tacos are ok, but still nothing special (fish pieces in a tortilla), and I bet they will charge a ton for them (even through tilapia is fairly cheap in the stores). What a jip. The best choice is still to buy outside and carry in. Dungeous crab sandwich (San Francisco), Sushi (Seattle), Beef fajitas (Houston), Rocky mountain oysters (Denver). Frankly, a subway or cousins cart are probably about the healthiest we can ever hope to get there, which doesn't say much.
  15. If this guy makes the team and, god forbid, has to be used, we are in real trouble. He's not even a good backup. No power, poor hitter, poor OBP. I'd even take Gerut over this guy, or just about anyone else rather than waste a roster spot on him.
  16. The Marlins really didn't save that much money. They are going to spend a large chunk of the money on Buck. The Marlins had a shot at getting 4 prospects from Toronto (including pitching), but turned it down, failed to get Prado, and settled for Infante/Dunn. Trading to a division rival no less really makes it look like the Marlins got desperate and couldn't get value for him. If given the chance at getting 4 good prospects for Fielder, rather than 2 high draft picks, and saving cash now, wouldn't that still seem somewhat appealing? It looks like the attitude of most teams who can afford Fielder at this point, are more than willing and able to wait until he comes out from the Brewers umbrella. Paying for him will be enough pain, but trading away a player on top of it to get him a year earlier is too much to ask.
  17. I think this goes to show the low demand for high priced guys nearing free agency, regardless of the numbers and accolades. This looks like a preview of a little less of what could be offered in a Prince trade as well. Both Uggla and Fielder have about 30+ HR in past seasons, and a year left on their contract. Even with arguing Fielder is better, its not tremendously better. Other teams are starting to realize that high priced guys need to be unloaded in trades, and not necessarily for a lot of talent, and certainly not for starting pitching.
  18. The price seems pretty high for this club at this point. Even putting aside all the minor league talent to give up just to get Greinke here, the 2 years $27 million is a stiff price to pay and a bit of a risk. If we aren't competitive in that 2nd year, he'll probably be packing his backs again. Given that Melvin has failed to produce any significant headway in his past attempts to get guys like Halladay, Lee, or Sanchez, I doubt his ability to pull this one off given the number of other successful small market teams with interest.
  19. Gotta love Gomez. He's picking up the slack while Cain is struggling terribly.
  20. Nice blown routine play, Weeks. Exactly why you haven't been signed long term yet.
  21. Ottow gets blotto, and kicked out of game. If he's a user on here, so be it. He shouldn't be able to bask in his anonymity. Hope the $165 was worth it. Frankly, if I were sitting in the area, I'd want him kicked out too, but much earlier. Classless fan, but it happens.
  22. Fans should get thrown out more often. It will just go to show that nobody escapes the wrath of the umpire. His motto is "make the call" and "take control", while getting it right is only secondary.
  23. Its just another example of how starting pitching is NOT the problem. Mark A and Melvin can keep on believing that, but it won't make it true. Theyll focus all their energy on starting pitching and allow defense and bullpen to go out the window. The bullpen is horrible beyond belief.
  24. Lucroy seems to be doing quite well defensively overall. Corey Hart has been pretty good defensively. Weeks has been better defensively than in past years as well. Each of these players are at defensive career highs, so certainly above expectations. Even Fielder doesn't look so bad.
  25. 6 strikeouts in his last two starts. He's striking out more than he has been doing all season long.
