  1. Pretty much backseat, after the fact driving argument..
  2. Seriously, the pitching gets complacent late in ball games. They should know better.
  3. Funny, how one of great defensive plays of the year is done by Betancourt and Fielder, who are constantly barraged for their poor defense. So much for defensive metrics.
  4. Not much of a point trying to bunt over the runner when Marcum would have been next.
  5. It has to do with hand motion on the particular kind of pitch. Painting strokes on the backside of an X suspended in front of you, as opposed to the front side, which would completely different stroke motion. Think Karate Kid, painting the fence.
  6. Yuni's defense was spot on with that last out. Nice work. WAR all the way up to 0.3 now. He overtakes Theriot, and is no longer the worst.
  7. Green will struggle and falter just like every AAA scrub that comes up here. Guys hitting over .300 and over .400 OBP in AAA are a dime a dozen, and pitching in the PCL is horrific. The only way some people are satisfied is by proving how futile they are at the plate and wasting an option. The only way this gets solved is by posting a horrible major league line and throwing him back to AAA, and saying "I told ya so". Thank goodness Melvin doesn't listen to the masses.
  8. We have Hairston, Lopez, Counsell, and Wilson. To even be think one minute about bringing up a rookie over 4 major league players is utterly absurd. This is no time to be splitting time trying to season a rookie. Lets all be clear that Greene has not seen a major league pitch outside of spring training.
  9. If we have Green or Gamel starting in the playoffs, it means our roster has been massively decimated by injuries. These guys did not get us there, and should in no means be deciding our playoff fate.
  10. This is one of those Wins Above Replacement that Betancourt should score on.
  11. Thank god for Yuni Betancourt. Otherwise this game would never end.
  12. Why guess? You're down 0-2. What the hell are you trying to do, walk?
  13. Yuni is the second highest hitting and 3rd highest OPS of SS in the major leagues since the break. Amazing.
  14. Anyone who's a regular starter in MLB is not the worst in baseball. The only reason that he shows up as the worst is because the default only shows the "qualified SS" by games. There are several SS that have worse UZR/150. They just simply haven't had the opportunity to accumulate the playing time. Guys like Sean Rodriguez, Matt Tolbert, Eduardo Nunez, Trevor Plouffe, and Chase D'Arnaud.all have worse UZR/150. Plus there are about 20+ unqualified SS this year with worse WAR as well.
  15. Concerning the losses one run losses in March, April and May. Cincy (7-6 loss), Yuni was 0 for 4.. This was Axford's loss. Atlanta (2-1 loss), Yuni was 2 for 4 Washington (4-3 loss), Yuni was 0 for 4... error on throw Philly (5-4 loss), Yuni was 1 for 4 Houston (3-2 loss), Yuni was 0 for 4 May Atlanta (2-1 loss), Yuni was 2 for 4. SF (5-4 loss ) Yuni was 0 for 4. San Diego (1-0 loss) Yuni was 0 for 1 pinch hitting. I really don't see how you can blame Yuni for most of these losses offensively or defensively. I really can't. The Washington game for the error ended up being decisive though. Obviously there are other games to consider, but a lot of the other losses were relative blowouts.
  16. I could see them buying out the option at $2 million and renegotiating at a lower price, $1-2 million. Final price being about $4 million
  17. He's only on that pace because of an ultra-horrible June. So far he's outhitting Fielder since the break. I would figure that if he somehow gets his OBP over .300, there a fair chance that his option may be picked up. The guy is a good contact hitter. To have the average that he does after digging such a huge hole and without ever walking is pretty good. I'm pretty sure Melvin believes that his defense is adequate, and that too much is made about it that can't be remedied in the offseason.
  18. Good thing we didn't base our decisions on 6 year sample sizes. Zero percent chance of keeping this up seems a bit low. He's been keeping it up for quite a while now.
  19. Thank god Melvin ignored the haters and we kept Yuni. Probably one of the hottest SS in the league.
  20. But what about a batter that never breaks his wrists, keeps that bat pointed bat at a 45 but his body spins around to avoid a pitch and the bat crosses the plate, which happens often. Its not called a strike but a computer might call it that way. The computer would take into account trying to avoid a pitch as it has a precise location of the ball in relation to the player. These things are made to accept millions of variables, while an ump often forgets several. There are few physical variables that a computer could not be programmed with. I don't believe a computer would make the call any worse than an ump, who could just as easily make the wrong call as well.
  21. Any batter movement can be scanned and interpreted these days within a couple of seconds. Its not a psychological evaluation for the machine to interpret a check swing at any point.
  22. I don't see why intent can't be judged by scanning overall movement. Starting and stopping are easily visualized events for a computer. Process the view from the lines and I bet it would be spot on. I see no reason why a scan of breaking at the wrists can't be visualized.
  23. Yuni has made that type of play a couple of times before.
