  1. Shuckers pull off improbable, claim first-half championship Posted by SUN HERALD on June 14, 2015 The Biloxi Shuckers continue to make their first season a memorable one. The Southern League's newest member clinched the South Division first-half championship with a 9-0 victory over the second-place Mississippi Braves Sunday in Pearl to earn a spot in the playoffs. Sunday's championship is an amazing accomplishment for the Shuckers considering the team spent the first 54 games of the season on the road while Biloxi's MGM Park was under construction. The Shuckers (39-24) will face the second-half winner of the South Division in a five-game playoff series, which will be held after the season concludes on Sept. 7. If they also manage to win the second half, they will take on the team that has the second best total record in the South. The Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers didn't make its home debut at MGM Park in Biloxi until June 6, ending a two-month journey that included 2,606 miles traveled without hosting a genuine home game. The Shuckers celebrated their title Sunday at Trustmark Park in Pearl, the home of the M-Braves (32-29) since 2005. Shuckers left fielder Kyle Wren received a water bottle shower and manager Carlos Subero was doused with Gatorade by his players. Starting pitcher Brooks Hall (7-3) put together one of the best performances of the season for the Shuckers on Sunday. The right-hander gave up two hits in eight innings, struck out five and walked one to pick up the victory. Biloxi broke open a scoreless game in the sixth on Sunday with five runs. Orlando Arcia started the scoring with a two-run single in the sixth and Michael Reed followed with an RBI double. Tyrone Taylor added an RBI single and Adam Weisenburger capped the scoring with an RBI double to right field. After six, the Shuckers led 5-0 and were well on their way to claiming the title. With the win, the Shuckers clinched the series in Pearl by winning three of the first four games. The season finale is set for 7 p.m. tonight at Pearl. Biloxi had a total of 15 hits in the game, including six players who had multiple hits. Third baseman Nathan Orf was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. After an off day on Tuesday, the Shuckers will resume play with a 7:10 p.m. home game against the Montgomery Biscuits to begin a five-game series at MGM Park.
  2. Final: Biloxi 9, Mississippi 0 Shuckers claim first half title with 9-0 thrashing of M-Braves Biloxi outscored Mississippi 22-2 over the last three days to claim division Biloxi Shuckers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/7/2/130695872/cuts/IMG_00761_5diztib7_2uv2x6hn.JPG Shuckers players run to celebrate and attack left-fielder Kyle Wren as the Shuckers clinched the first half South title. (Benton Reed Photography) PEARL, MS - The Shuckers clinched the first half Southern League South Division title with a 9-0 win over the Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park on Sunday night. Biloxi has taken the last three games over Mississippi after dropping the series opener, and has claimed its sixth consecutive series victory (10-4 on the year). The Shuckers have shutout the Braves the last two nights by a combined score of 12-0, and have outscored the Braves 22-2 in the three wins. It was Biloxi's seventh shutout of the season. The Shuckers become just the second full-season club to clinch a first half title, joining the Texas League's Corpus Christi Hooks (HOU). Biloxi clinches the half with six games remaining, including five with Montgomery starting on Wednesday at MGM Park. This is the second-straight season the Brewers' Double-A club has won a first half as the Huntsville Stars won the Southern League North first half with 12 games remaining on June 2, 2014. Starting pitching continued to dominate for the Shuckers against the Braves, as Brooks Hall (W, 7-3, 8 IP, 2 H, BB, 5 SO) allowed just one hit through the first eight innings and walked one while picking up five strikeouts in his longest outing of the season. The Shuckers have won the righty's last three starts. Biloxi starters have delivered 10 quality starts over the last 13 games, with an ERA less than two. "I'm pitching well right now and being consistent on the mound, throwing strikes," added starting pitcher Brooks Hall who improves to 3-0 in June. "To throw eight innings like that in a clinching win is just incredible." Biloxi (39-24) scored first for the fourth consecutive game against Mississippi (32-30), this time putting up five runs in the sixth to break open a scoreless contest. Kyle Wren (2x5, 2 R) and Nathan Orf (3x4, RBI, R) started things off with back-to-back singles, putting men at second and third for the Shuckers. Orlando Arcia (2x5, 2 RBI, 2 R) drove the runners home with a single down the right field line to give Biloxi a 2-0 lead. Michael Reed (2x5, RBI, R, 2B) followed with a RBI double to plate Arcia for a three-run advantage. A groundout by Nick Ramirez (1x5, RBI, R, 2B) moved Reed to third and Tyrone Taylor (3x5, 2 RBI, R) singled home the runner from third for the fourth run of the inning. After a Nick Shaw (0x4, RBI, BB) fly out, Adam Weisenburger (2x4, RBI, 2B) drove a double to right, allowing Taylor to score from first. Taylor's single in the second extended his hitting streak to a season-high six games, and Wren's multi-hit performance now gives the Shuckers' outfielder 12 in his last 19 games dating back to May 24. "We hit the ball hard today and (Brooks Hall) was unbelievable on the mound. I am honestly so excited right now, I don't know what to say," added Taylor. Biloxi tacked on three more runs in the seventh and one more in the ninth to blow the game open and secure the division-clinching win. Wren recorded his 12th multi-hit performance over his last 19 games is now batting .300 on the season and .397 in June. "We can rest easy for the rest of the first half, because we have clinched the half, but that doesn't mean we will play any less hard," said Wren. "We just want to continue this into the second half." The Shuckers will look for their first four-game winning streak on the road in the series finale on Monday night, where RHP Hiram Burgos (3-0, 3.68) will take on RHP RHP Tyrell Jenkins (4-3, 3.00). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Biloxi Box Score Pretty impressive what this team has accomplished this season. Chances are the team that takes the field in the playoffs will look very different, but they still should be plenty talented. Looking forward to following them in the second half. Biloxi Game Log A five run sixth was more than enough of a cushion for Brooks Hall. Biloxi Top of the 6th Kyle Wren singles on a sharp ground ball to center fielder Mallex Smith, deflected by pitcher Jason Hursh. With Nathan Orf batting, wild pitch by Jason Hursh, Kyle Wren to 2nd. 3. Final: Biloxi 3, Mississippi 0 Johnson delivers magic number to two with brilliant outing Shuckers can clinch first half title with a win on Sunday or Monday in Pearl Biloxi Shuckers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/7/7/4/130492774/cuts/DSC00668_yfpj3wem_ui63nqrk.jpg Hobbs Johnson tossed a season-high seven innings and posted a season-most eight strikes in the 3-0 shutout (Benton Reed Photography) PEARL, MS - Hobbs Johnson tossed a season-high seven shutout innings with eight strikeouts and help move the Shuckers magic number to two to clinch the Southern League South Division after a 3-0 victory over the Mississippi Braves on Saturday night at Trustmark Park. The Shuckers have pulled ahead, 2-1, in the five-game series and have evened up the season matchup at four with the Braves. The division lead is at its largest this season, 5 ½ games, with only seven left to play in the first half. A win in either of the next two games of the series and the Shuckers will celebrate at Trustmark Park. Johnson (W, 4-3) made easy work of the Braves all night, facing 24 batters on 91 pitches. The Southern League All-Star recorded his first quality start of the 2015 campaign, shutting out Mississippi in seven innings with three hits allowed and one walk with a season-high eight strikeouts. The eight strikeouts were his most since fanning nine May 10, 2014 while with A+ Brevard Co. Biloxi (38-24) scored first for the third straight game to start the series on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning off the bat of Nathan Orf (1x4, RBI, R) that brought in Parker Berberet (2x4, RBI). Biloxi added insurance in the eighth on RBI singles from Michael Reed (1x4, RBI, R, 2 SB) and Tyrone Taylor (24, RBI). Orf reached second to start the inning on an error from shortstop Emerson Landoni and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Orlando Arcia (0x4) before Reed drove the runner home. The Shucker's right fielder stole second and third to set up Taylor's RBI single, two batters later. Taylor is riding a season-long five-game hit streak. Mike Strong (SV, 3) earned his third save of the season by closing out Mississippi (32-29) in the final two innings. Johnson and Strong combined for Biloxi's fifth shutout of the season, holding the M-Braves to just four hits. Biloxi added four steals in the game, pushing their season total to 68. Kyle Wren was 2-for-4 and has a multi-hit game in 11 of his last 18 played dating back to May 24. The Shuckers leadoff hitter has risen his batting average from .264 to .297 over that span and is batting .396 in 12 June affairs. Biloxi will try to win the division on Sunday night against the Braves. RHP Brooks Hall (6-3, 3.47) will battle RHP Jason Hursh (2-4, 5.18). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., with coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. on 1240-AM WGCM and the Biloxi Shuckers Radio Network. Biloxi Box Score Reading through the game notes that Chris put out before the game tonight I found it interesting that as good as Hobbs Johnson has pitched this season, he hadn't gone more than five and a third in any of his previous starts. He did a great job of getting ahead of hitters and was in control for pretty much the entire time he was on the mound. Tyrone Taylor and Kyle Wren both stayed hot with two hits each and Michael Reed had a single, then stole second and third in the eighth inning to help tack on an insurance run. Biloxi Game Log The seventh inning was one of the best of the night for Johnson, who was lifted after 91 pitches, going K, K, comebacker to the mound to finish up his night. Mississippi Bottom of the 7th KD Kang strikes out swinging. Rio Ruiz strikes out swinging. Emerson Landoni grounds out, pitcher Hobbs Johnson to first baseman Nick Ramirez.
  4. Final: DSL Pirates 5, DSL Brewers 6 This was a pretty low-scoring pitchers duel for most of the game with the Brewers scoring two in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead. The Pirates came right back with three in the top of the eighth, but the Brewers answered with three of their own in the bottom of the eighth, re-taking the lead on a Julio Mendez double, and held on for the 6-5 win. DSL Brewers Box Score 20-year-old righty Junior Flores made his season debut, tossing one scoreless inning to start the game. 18-year-old Panamanian Carlos Luna followed with six strong innings, allowing two runs and striking out six. 6'6" Starling Duval got the final four outs to earn the win and the former Diamondbacks farmhand now has three of the four Brewers wins. Mendez finished the game 2-for-5 with a double and knocked in two. Roosevert Chal also had a single and double in four at bats to raise his average to .471 through five games. Outfielder Anderson Jesus, formerly of the Rangers, had two hits and a walk while shortstop Ignacio Otano had two more hits out of the leadoff spot. Franly Mallen singled and walked in five plate appearances. DSL Brewers Game Log The Brewers three run eighth. Javier Castillo came on to pinch run for Otano after he singled. Hopefully not a n injury situation, but seems odd to pinch-run for your leadoff hitter so might be worth keeping an eye on Monday. DSL Brewers Bottom of the 8th Pitching Change: Raymond Rodriguez replaces Julian Villamar. Anderson Jesus singles on a line drive to left fielder Eddy Vizcaino. With Bismar Nunez batting, wild pitch by Raymond Rodriguez, Anderson Jesus to 2nd. Bismar Nunez walks. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Ariel Estades replaces Bismar Nunez. With Adolfo Morillo batting, wild pitch by Raymond Rodriguez, Anderson Jesus to 3rd. Ariel Estades to 2nd. Adolfo Morillo strikes out swinging. Roosevert Chal singles on a fly ball to center fielder Yondry Contreras. Anderson Jesus scores. Ariel Estades scores. Roosevert Chal to 2nd on the throw. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Dilson Fernandez replaces Henry Correa. Dilson Fernandez grounds out, third baseman Jesus Ronco to first baseman Huascar Fuentes. Ignacio Otano singles on a line drive to right fielder Jeremias Portorreal. Roosevert Chal to 3rd. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Javier Castillo replaces Ignacio Otano. Julio Mendez doubles (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Yondry Contreras. Roosevert Chal scores. Javier Castillo to 3rd. Franly Mallen called out on strikes.
  5. Final: Wisconsin 5, Dayton 3 Rattlers beat Dragons 5-3 in rain-shortened game Wisconsin takes second game in a row at Dayton By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers DAYTON, OH - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers got some bounces going their way and they defeated the Dayton Dragons 5-3 in a game shortened to six innings by rain at Fifth Third Field on Friday night. Wisconsin (20-41) scored three runs in the top of the second inning. Greg McCall had a leadoff single and took second on a wild pitch. Elvis Rubio hit an infield single to put runners on the corners. Alan Sharkey hit a seeing-eye single through the middle of the diamond to drive in McCall and send Rubio around to third. Mitch Meyer was next and he appeared to hit into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play. But, Sharkey was ruled safe at second base as the shortstop wasn't on the base when he caught the ball. Rubio scored on the play and the Rattlers were up 2-0. The score moved to 3-0 after a grounder off the bat of Gregory Munoz was misplayed for an error to allow Sharkey to score from second. Brian O'Grady got the Dragons (31-30) on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with a leadoff home run. Wisconsin added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning. McCall singled to start the frame but was still at first with two outs. Sharkey hit a grounder up the middle that was misplayed for an error and McCall wound up on third. Then, Meyer ripped a clean single into right to drive in McCall and send Sharkey for third. Munoz followed with a bunt single to drive in Sharkey and the Rattlers were up 5-1. Cy Sneed retired fourteen of the sixteen Dragons he faced after allowing the second inning home run to O'Grady. But, he walked Avain Rachal with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and that brought O'Grady to the plate again. The Dayton centerfielder lined a 2-2 pitch from Sneed to right for his second home run of the night and the Rattlers lead was down to two runs. Tyler Linehan entered the game for Sneed and got the final out of the sixth inning. The tarp went on the field just before the rain started. The game was called after a delay of an hour and twenty-four minutes. Linehan earned the save by getting the last out in the sixth. Sneed tossed 5-2/3 innings, allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out seven. His seven strikeouts set a new single-game high as a professional for Sneed. He also earned his third win of the season. The win on Friday night gave the Timber Rattlers a win in the series with the Dragons. Wisconsin has won two straight series. The Timber Rattlers begin a series with the Bowling Green Hot Rods in Bowling Green, Kentucky on Saturday night. Kodi Medeiros (2-2, 4.21) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The Hot Rods have named Greg Harris (3-4, 2.42) as their starting pitcher. Game Time is 7:05pm. Catch the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. HOME RUNS: DAY: Brian O'Grady (3rd, 0 on in 2nd inning off Cy Sneed, 0 out) Brian O'Grady (4th, 1 on in 6th inning off Cy Sneed, 2 out) WP: Cy Sneed (3-7) LP: Tejay Antone (3-6) SAVE: Tyler Linehan (1) TIME: 1:47 (1:24 delay) ATTN: 8,309 Wisconsin Box Score All-Star Cy Sneed with yet another solid start for the Rattlers. His only real flaws were the two home run balls, but aside from that he allowed only one other hit and recorded seven punchouts. Not a bad way to earn your first save of the season if you're Tyler Linehan either. Pitched to one batter, got a groundout to end the sixth and then the skies opened up. Seemed strange not seeing Gatewood or Harrison's names in the lineup, but looking forward to seeing what the two youngsters will do with Helena. Elvis Rubio extended his hitting streak to six games with another multi-hit game and is batting .458 over that stretch. Mitch Meyer with a pair of RBI in his first game back off the DL. Wisconsin Game Log Wisconsin's three run second inning. Wisconsin Top of the 2nd Greg McCall singles on a ground ball to right fielder Narciso Crook. With Francisco Castillo batting, wild pitch by Tejay Antone, Greg McCall to 2nd. Francisco Castillo strikes out swinging. Elvis Rubio singles on a ground ball to second baseman Shedric Long. Greg McCall to 3rd. Alan Sharkey singles on a ground ball to center fielder Brian O'Grady. Greg McCall scores. Elvis Rubio to 3rd. Mitch Meyer grounds out, second baseman Shedric Long to shortstop Luis Gonzalez to first baseman Avain Rachal. Elvis Rubio scores. Alan Sharkey to 2nd. Gregory Munoz reaches on a fielding error by shortstop Luis Gonzalez. Alan Sharkey scores. Tucker Neuhaus singles on a ground ball to right fielder Narciso Crook. Gregory Munoz to 2nd. With Brandon Diaz batting, Garrett Boulware picks off Gregory Munoz at 2nd on throw to Shedric Long.
  6. Final: Dunedin 7, Brevard County 3 Orf plays all nine positions in 'Tees finale By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - Even though the Brevard County Manatees lost their season finale to the Dunedin Blue Jays by a final score of 7-3 on Sunday at Space Coast Stadium, the afternoon was a memorable one for Nathan Orf. The Manatees infielder played every position on the field in the final ballgame of the 2014 season. Orf began the game in as the team's catcher, a position he has not played since his collegiate career at the University of Illinois-Chicago. From there, he changed positions every inning: first base in the second, second base in the third, third base in the fourth, shortstop in the fifth, left field in the sixth, center field in the seventh and right field in the eighth. Finally, in the ninth inning, Orf took the mound for the first time in his professional career. Orf faced one batter, Nick Baligod, and retired him on a ground out to third baseman Greg Hopkins. After the out was recorded, Manatees manager Joe Ayrault came out of the dugout and pulled Orf from the ballgame to end his historic afternoon. As he left the field, the Space Coast Stadium crowd gave Orf a standing ovation, to which the utility man doffed his cap. Orf finished the game 0-for-2 at the plate with a walk. He made four defensive plays at three different positions. Outside of the monumental display by Orf, the Manatees (37-32 second half, 73-62 overall) had a tough time against the Blue Jays (31-38, 77-61). Dunedin scored five runs in the first inning off of Brevard County starter Jorge Lopez. The D-Jays slammed five hits in the inning, including a two-run single by Marcus Knecht and a two-run double by L.B. Dantzler. Jorge Saez later tacked on another with an RBI single. Dunedin added a run in the third on an RBI single by Mitch Nay and plated one final run against the 'Tees bullpen. Dantzler capped the scoring for the D-Jays when he hit his third Florida State League home run, a solo shot against Tyler Spurlin in the seventh. Brevard County scored its first two runs in the third inning. With Orlando Arcia on third base and two outs, Alfredo Rodriguez surprised the Blue Jays defense with a bunt toward third. Arcia scored easily and Jays third baseman Mitch Nay made a wild throw to first that helped Rodriguez move up to second base. Rodriguez was credited with an RBI bunt single and advanced an extra base on the throwing error. One batter later, Parker Berberet sent Rodriguez home with an RBI single. The 'Tees scored their only other run in the eighth and once again Rodriguez played a hand. After Victor Roache doubled to start the inning, Rodriguez drove him home with a two-out, run-scoring double. Rodriguez finished the game 3-for-4 with a team-best two RBI and a run scored. Dunedin reliever Kramer Champlin earned the win. Champlin (4-2, 2.70 ERA) was the first man out of the bullpen for the Blue Jays. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits over two innings. Lopez (10-10, 4.58 ERA) took the loss. He gave up six of the Blue Jays' runs on nine hits through four innings of work. Lopez struck out four men and walked three. Brevard County Box Score As highlighted in the game story, Joe Ayrault had some fun with his lineup in the Manatees final game of the year. In addition to Orf's exploits, Victor Roache was inserted as the team's leadoff hitter. With 18 home runs he entered the game just one behind the Manatees team record of 19, set by Hunter Morris in 2011 and tied by Nick Ramirez last season. Roache finished the game 1-for-4 with a double. Alfredo Rodriguez saw action at first and second base and went 3-for-4 with a double. Greg Hopkins played first, second and third and went 2-for-4 with a double and Parker Berberet added a pair of hits. Brevard County Play-By-Play Lots of this in today's game log Dunedin Top of the 6th Defensive switch from left field to right field for Victor Roache. Defensive switch from second base to shortstop for Orlando Arcia. Defensive switch from first base to second base for Alfredo Rodriguez. Defensive switch from shortstop to left field for Nathan Orf. Defensive switch from third base to first base for Greg Hopkins. Defensive switch from right field to third base for Brandon Macias. Christian Lopes called out on strikes. Nick Baligod grounds out, shortstop Orlando Arcia to first baseman Greg Hopkins. Dwight Smith flies out to right fielder Victor Roache.
  7. Final: Dunedin 0, Brevard County 2 (Game One) Wagner, Peterson combine to two-hit D-Jays By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - Tyler Wagner and Stephen Peterson shut down the Dunedin Blue Jays to the tune of a two-hit shutout in a 2-0 Brevard County Manatees victory in game one of Saturday night's doubleheader at Space Coast Stadium. Wagner began the night with four no-hit innings and Peterson (5-4, 2.98 ERA) nearly carried that performance the rest of the way. The left-handed reliever pitched 1.2 innings before Blue Jays (30-37 second half, 76-60 overall) leadoff man Christian Lopes singled to break up the no-hitter with two outs in the sixth. The D-Jays nearly scraped a run across the same inning in which they ended the no-hit bid. After Lopes singled, Nick Baligod hit a single of his own and both runners moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Peterson settled down, however, and induced a soft fly out to left field to end the threat. In the seventh inning, Peterson shut the door for a Manatees (36-31, 72-61) victory. After he issued a one-out walk, the lefty got L.B. Dantzler to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the ballgame. Peterson picked up the win with three strikeouts over three scoreless innings of relief. Taylor Cole took the loss for Dunedin. Cole (8-9, 3.07 ERA) pitched two innings and gave up just one unearned run. He struck out four, walked one and surrendered two hits. The Manatees scored their only run off of Cole on a Blue Jays defensive miscue. With one out in the first inning, Orlando Arcia singled and Mike Garza worked a walk. The Manatees attempted a double steal and D-Jays catcher Jorge Saez tried to nab Garza at second. His throw skipped into centerfield, however and Arcia scored on the error. In the fourth inning, the 'Tees grabbed their only other run of the ballgame thanks to a titanic blast from team's home run leader. Victor Roache launched a solo homer over the right field wall to give Brevard County a 2-0 lead. Roache's 18th long ball of the year puts him one behind Nick Ramirez and Hunter Morris for the Manatees' single-season home run record. Wagner also made history with his tremendous start. Though the right-hander did not factor in the decision, he knocked his 2014 earned run average down to 1.86. That mark gives Wagner the single-season ERA record for the Brevard County Manatees. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Play-By-Play Final: Dunedin 0, Brevard County 1 (Game Two) Johnson leads 'Tees to shutout victory By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - Hobbs Johnson tossed six shutout innings to lead Brevard County to a 1-0 victory over the Dunedin Blue Jays at Space Coast Stadium in game two on Saturday Night. Johnson (12-8, 2.93 ERA) allowed just three hits over his six shutout frames to complete the sweep of the doubleheader. The Blue Jays (76-61, 30-38 second half) loaded the bases against Johnson with no outs in the fourth frame. After Pierce Rankin lined out to second base, Peter Mooney hit a come-backer to the hill. Johnson threw home and catcher Cameron Garfield fired to first to complete the inning-ending double play. Brevard County (73-61, 37-31) scored the only run of the game in the fifth inning. With one out, Garfield laid down a bunt, which resulted in a single. After Greg Hopkins singled to right field to put runners on first and second, Brandon Macias laced a base hit to left. Dwight Smith, Jr. threw out Garfield out the plate. Hopkins moved up to third on the play to put runners on the corners with two outs. Nathan Orf stepped up and delivered a run-scoring single to center field to plate Hopkins. Right-hander Martin Viramontes (3-3, 3.70) logged two strikeouts in a perfect seventh inning to record his second save of the season. Dunedin's Jesse Hernandez (6-11, 4.67) took the loss. He surrendered just one run on seven hits over five innings of work. The Manatees finish the season on Sunday afternoon with a 3:05 p.m. matinee against Dunedin. Jorge Lopez (10-9, 4.31 ERA) will face off against D-Jays starter Roberto Osuna (0-2, 7.20 ERA). The gates at Space Coast Stadium will open at 2:00 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Play-By-Play

  9. Final: Lakeland 4, Brevard County 1 Tigers nip 'Tees, 4-1 in series finale Brevard County picks up seven hits in defeat By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees' four-game win streak was snapped on Thursday night, as they fell to the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 4-1 at Space Coast Stadium. Brevard County (35-31 second half, 71-61 overall) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but Lakeland (20-47, 62-72) pushed across a run in every inning from the fourth through the seventh to emerge with a 4-1 advantage. In the bottom of the third, Brevard County jumped out in front thanks to a defensive miscue by the Flying Tigers. Garrett Cooper led off the frame with a double off the wall in center and Brandon Macias followed with a single to left to put runners at first and third with nobody out. Nathan Orf was then hit by his Florida State League-leading 22nd pitch to load the bases. After Orlando Arcia popped up to second, Parker Berberet stepped in. After a first pitch ball, Lakeland catcher Austin Green made a snap throw to first to try and pick off Orf. His throw was wild and it skipped past first baseman James Robbins and up the line. Everyone moved up a base, as Cooper scored to give the 'Tees the lead, 1-0. Berberet walked to re-load the bases, but the Manatees could not push another run across. Lakeland's starter Micah Kellogg (0-1, 2.70 ERA) forced Victor Roache to foul out to first and got Alfredo Rodriguez to fly out to right to end the threat. Lakeland came right back to knot the game up in the top of the fourth. With one out, Green made up for his errant throw with a towering blast onto the berm in left. The solo home run was his 15th of the season and it tied the game at one. Curt Powell gave the Flying Tigers the lead for good in the next frame. Jared Reaves led off the fifth with a single to center and advanced to second on a groundout to short by Chad Wright. With two down, Powell grounded a single into center field. Orf, who was playing center for the first time all year, threw high to plate. As the ball went to the backstop, Reaves scored from second to give Lakeland the lead, 2-1. In the sixth, Jeff McVaney started with a triple down the right field line. Connor Harrell then ripped a double off the wall in right-center to score McVaney to make it 3-1, Lakeland. That blow chased Manatees starter Taylor Williams (1-2, 4.26) from the ballgame. The right-hander's yielded three runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings. He walked one and struck out five. Lakeland pushed across its final run against Brevard County reliever Scott Lieser in the seventh. The right-hander issued a lead-off walk to Wright, who subsequently stole second base. After a sacrifice bunt by Curt Powell advanced the runner to third, Lakeland utilized a suicide squeeze. With Wright breaking from third, Tyler Hanover laid down a perfect bunt towards the first base side. Lieser's only play was to first base and the run scored to push Lakeland's advantage to 4-1. That was the only run Lieser would allow in an effective relief outing for the 'Tees. The Browerville, Minn. native allowed just one run without giving up a hit. Lieser also walked one and punched out one. Brevard County brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh and eighth innings, but could not scratch a run across. Orf walked and Arcia singled to spark a two-out rally in the seventh, but Berberet lined out to center to end the threat. In the eighth, Cooper flew out to right after singles by Rodriguez and Greg Hopkins. Kellogg only went three innings in his start for Lakeland. The right-hander allowed just one run on three hits and walked one. Left-hander Tyler Ford picked up his first FSL win, as he surrendered just one hit and struck out three over three shutout frames. 2013 draftee, Scott Sitz, picked up his eighth save with the Flying Tigers. The former Florida State Seminole scattered two hits in two scoreless innings to close out the game. Six out of nine Manatees picked up hits in defeat. Hopkins led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance at plate. The two base-knocks tied his season-high in Brevard County. FSL Post-Season All-Star Tyler Wagner (13-6, 1.91) will get the start for the Manatees tomorrow night, as they start their final series of 2014 against the Dunedin Blue Jays (30-36, 76-59) at Space Coast Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Fellow Post-Season All-Star Taylor Cole (8-8, 3.12) gets the start for the first-half North Division champion Blue Jays. 10. Final: Lakeland 2, Brevard County 3 Wang dazzles in 3-2, Manatees victory Brewers' rehabber Wei-Chung Wang sets multiple career-highs in win By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/4/8/91801548/cuts/Wang_Wei_Chung_767idg1l_u1xre2jm.jpg Milwaukee Brewers rehabber Wei-Chung Wang went a career-high 7.2 innings and tied a career-best with eight strike outs in the Brevard County Manatees, 3-2 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium. VIERA, Fla. - Left-hander Wei-Chung Wang made his only rehab start with Brevard County one to remember, as he lead the Manatees to a 3-2 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium. Making his sixth rehab start and his first since being transferred from Class-A Wisconsin this past weekend, Wang (1-0, 2.35 ERA) went a career-high 7.2 innings and tied a career-best with eight punch outs to lead the Manatees (35-30 second half, 71-60 overall) to victory. The win was the southpaw's first ever in a start and his first in any game since this date, August 27, a year ago with the Rookie Gulf Coast League Pirates. After allowing two runs on five hits through the first three frames, Wang settled down and baffled Lakeland (19-47, 61-72) over his final 4.2 innings of work. Following a single by Curt Powell in the third, the Taiwanese native issued just two more hits and sat down 16 of the last 18 batters he faced. Right-hander Jon Huizinga came in to relieve Wang in the eighth and finish the ballgame. The side-armer scattered just one hit and struck out one to record the final four outs for his second consecutive save. Brevard County gave Wang the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Trailing 2-1 after a sacrifice fly to center by Jeff McVaney in the top of the frame, Brandon Macias and Greg Hopkins started the rally with back-to-back singles. Nathan Orf subsequently sacrificed them to second and third with a bunt. Orlando Arcia grounded out to short, which brought home Macias to knot the game up at two. Tyrone Taylor then put Brevard County out in front, as he ripped a single to left to score Hopkins to make it 3-2, Manatees. Lakeland initially grabbed the lead in the second on an RBI double by Connor Harrell, but the 'Tees struck back immediately. Leading off the bottom half of the inning, Victor Roache hammered a 1-1 pitch from Flying Tigers starter Jade Todd (2-0, 5.74) towards deep right-center. The ball carried well over the wall for Roache's team-leading 17th home run of the season, which tied the game at one. The Flying Tigers used three different relievers in their loss. Todd yielded three hits and one run over two innings, before he gave way to Burgos. The southpaw, who took his fourth loss of the year, allowed two runs on three hits and walked three. Whit Mayberry threw two scoreless frames to close out the night. The right-hander surrendered two hits and struck out two. Taylor picked up the only multi-hit game for the 'Tees. The top prospect in the Brewers' organization according to MLB.com went 2-for-4 with an RBI. As a team, Brevard County tallied eight hits in its fourth-consecutive win. Taylor Williams (1-1, 4.05) will try and complete the sweep tomorrow, as he makes his first home start for the Manatees. First pitch between Lakeland and Brevard County is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. Right-hander Micah Kellogg (0-1, 2.57) makes third appearance and second start for the Flying Tigers tomorrow evening. Brevard County Box Score Tyrone Taylor went 2-for-4 but the big news came after the game. Haven't seen it confirmed yet, but it appears with the Manatees all but eliminated from playoff contention, Taylor is headed to Huntsville to finish out the season. Victor Roache was walked, hit by a pitch, and hit his team leading 17th home run. Nathan Orf and Mike Garza each added a single and a walk. Brevard County Play-By-Play The Manatees strung together some good plate appearances in the third to get Wang a lead. Brevard County Bottom of the 3rd Pitching Change: Alex Burgos replaces Jade Todd. 11. Final: Brevard County 13, Lakeland 4 (Game One) 'Tees romp Tigers, 13-4 after month-long wait Manatees rack up 16 hits as they take game one of doubleheader By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - In a game that was suspended for about a month and a half, the Brevard County Manatees cruised to a 13-4 victory over the Lakeland Flying Tigers in game one of a doubleheader on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium. Brevard County's (33-30 second half, 69-60 overall) offense already started with an advantage. When the game was suspended after just 12 pitches on July 10 at Lakeland's Joker Marchant Stadium due to heavy rain, the Manatees had a runner at first and a 3-2 count on Orlando Arcia. Once the nine-inning contest picked back up, the 'Tees pounced. Arcia singled on a hard ground ball to short and Tyrone Taylor followed with a line single through the hole between third and short. Nathan Orf, who singled to left to start the game back in July, came around to score to give Brevard the early lead, 1-0. After Connor Harrell hit a two-run home run to right to put Lakeland (19-45, 61-70) in front, 2-1, the Manatees' offense caught fire once again. Alfredo Rodriguez stepped in against Lakeland starter Yorfrank Lopez (5-12, 5.04 ERA), after walks to Victor Roache and Parker Berberet sandwiched a fly out to left. The Oak Hill, Va. native lofted a ball down the right field line for a double to score Roache and tie the game at two. The next batter, Orf, would bring home Berberet with a ground out to short to give the 'Tees the lead back, 3-2. The Manatees tacked on three more runs in the third. Taylor kick started the inning with a single and a stolen base and came across to score on an RBI single to left by Michael Reed. The onslaught continued, as Cameron Garfield roped one over the head of the center fielder Connor Harrell for an RBI double. Reed scored all the way from first to give Brevard a 5-2 advantage. Berberet brought home the final run of the frame. With two outs, the Manatees designated hitter cranked a double into the right-center field gap to chase home Garfield and extend the lead to 6-2. Lakeland scratched across a pair of two-out runs in the third and fourth on singles by Michael Thomas and Curt Powell to trim the Manatees' advantage to 6-4, but that is as close as they would get. Mike Garza singled home a run in the seventh to make it 7-4, Brevard County, but it was the five-run eighth that put the game out of reach. With one out, Arcia reached on an error by shortstop Curt Powell and advanced to second on a walk to Taylor. Lakeland reliever Calvin Drummond could not find the strike zone against Reed either, as he walked him on four pitches to load the bases. Garfield then made the right-hander pay. On a 2-2 pitch, the Florida State League All-Star slapped a bloop single into shallow right field. Arcia and Taylor came across to score, while Reed stopped at second to make it 9-4, Brevard County. After the runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch and Roache struck out, Garza came through for the second time in as many innings. The former Georgetown Hoya grounded another single up the middle, this time it scored two. Reed and Garfield scored to extend the lead even further to 11-4. That was all for Drummond. Lakeland decided not to burn its bullpen anymore and brought in first baseman James Robbins to finish the game on the bump. His relief outing did not go well, as Brevard County picked up its final two runs against the left-hander. Berberet hit a laser into right-center for an RBI double to cap off the five-run eighth and Arcia took Robbins deep in the ninth for his fourth home run of the season. Five Manatees finished the game with multi-hit nights, while three of those five recorded multi-RBI games. Arcia and Taylor each tallied three hits and two runs scored in the lopsided victory. Garfield picked up three base-knocks and three RBI. Berberet went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI and Garza went 2-for-4 with three driven in. Jorge Lopez (10-9, 4.38) picked up the win for Brevard County in what was technically a relief appearance. The right-hander went six innings and allowed four runs on nine hits, walked one and punched out six. Hobbs Johnson got the start, because he was slated to begin the original game in July. Southpaw Stephen Peterson was great again for the 'Tees in relief. In two shutout frames, he allowed just one hit and struck out four. Since August 6, Peterson has not allowed an earned run in his last six outings. Right-hander Tyler Spurlin came in to record the final three outs in the ninth to close out the win. Lakeland's Lopez put himself in a tie for the FSL-lead in losses with the defeat. The Venezuelan native, who actually threw the first 12 pitches of the game back in July before the rains came, yielded six runs on nine hits over four innings. Lopez walked two and struck out three. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Play-By-Play Final: Lakeland 1, Brevard County 2 (Game Two) Manatees walk-off in extras, 2-1, on Berberet's single Brevard County sweeps Lakeland in doubleheader to keep playoff hopes alive By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - Thanks to a walk-off single by Parker Berberet, the Brevard County Manatees kept their playoff dreams alive with a 2-1 victory over the Lakeland Flying Tigers in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader at Space Coast Stadium. With the Brevard County (34-30 second half, 70-60 overall) and Lakeland (19-46, 61-71) knotted at one, Orlando Arcia walked against Flying Tigers reliever Brennan Smith to start the bottom of the eighth inning. After Tyrone Taylor struck out, Arcia broke for second on a 1-1 pitch to Michael Reed. Lakeland catcher Austin Green's throw was too high and the 20-year-old slid into second with his 29th stolen base of the year. Smith then walked Reed to put runners at first and second for Berberet. On a 2-2 count, the Yorba Linda, Calif. native hit a high chopper towards third base. Tyler Hanover made a leaping attempt to try and snag it, but the ball went over his head. Arcia raced around to score on the single to give the Manatees the walk-off victory, 2-1. The thrilling win was possible thanks to some heroics an inning prior. With Flying Tigers starter Tommy Collier (3-2, 3.89 ERA) holding onto a 1-0 lead in search of a complete game, Garrett Cooper started the rally with a walk. Cooper was then pinch-ran for by Alfredo Rodriguez and Greg Hopkins advanced him to second on a sacrifice bunt to third. Once again, it was Jose Sermo who delivered the clutch base-hit. On a 2-2 pitch, Sermo grounded one into center field. Rodriguez raced home from third to tie the game at one on the single. With runners at first and second and only one out, Brevard County had a chance to win it in that frame, but was unable to do so. After Smith came in to relieve Collier, Nathan Orf hit a deep fly ball down the right field line, but it was tracked down by Jeff McVaney. Victor Roache, who came into to pinch-run for Sermo, was running on the pitch and got doubled off first base to end the inning. After six scoreless innings, Lakeland grabbed the initial lead against Manatees reliever Martin Viramontes in the top of the seventh. With one out, Viramontes plunked McVaney on a 1-2 pitch to put a runner on base. Austin Green then singled to left-center to put make it first and third. Connor Harrell followed with a sacrifice fly to deep center to score McVaney and give Lakeland the lead, 1-0. Despite that one hiccup, Viramontes was stellar again in relief for the 'Tees. The right-hander picked up the win in his third straight outing, as he yielded one run on one hit over three innings. Viramontes also racked up six punch outs, one shy of tying his season-high. This came in support of starter Mike Strong (2-2, 2.67), who was masterful yet again. The southpaw retired the first nine he faced and allowed just two hits over five shutout frames. Strong struck out five and did not walk a batter. Collier was great for the Flying Tigers, as well. In 6.1 innings, the right-hander allowed just the one run in the seventh inning on six hits. He struck out six and walked three in the no-decision. Orf, Arcia and Sermo led Brevard County offensively in the nightcap, as all three players picked up multi-hit games. Arcia had an incredible doubleheader, going 5-for-9 with three runs scored, a home run, a walk and two stolen bases. The 'Tees will look to keep their playoff dreams alive tomorrow night, as they take on the Flying Tigers at 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. Major League rehabber Wei-Chung Wang (0-0, -.-- ERA) will get the start for Brevard County. Wang appeared in 13 games with the Milwaukee Brewers this year before going on the disabled list. Lakeland's starter for tomorrow has yet to be named. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Play-By-Play
  12. Final: Brevard County 5, Clearwater 4 Brevard rallies in ninth to upend Clearwater, 5-4 Manatees score four runs in the final inning to take three-of-four By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/2/4/91231824/cuts/Roache_Victor2_6dtwusp9_4zpx8puc.JPG Brevard County outfielder Victor Roache, seen here from a game earlier this season, delivered the go-ahead base-hit in the top of the ninth inning in the Manatees 5-4 win over the Clearwater Threshers on Sunday afternoon at Bright House Field. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning, as they defeated the Clearwater Threshers, 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at Bright House Field. Trailing 2-1 going into the last inning, Clearwater (28-36 second half, 45-87 overall) brought on one of their closers in Lee Ridenhour. Orlando Arcia led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tyrone Taylor. Brevard County (32-30, 68-60) then made the Threshers pay with the heart of its lineup. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Michael Reed roped a ball down the right field line for a game-tying RBI double to knot the game at two. Victor Roache would put the 'Tees in front a few pitches later. On a 2-2 count, the former first-round pick ripped one past the third baseman Harold Martinez and into left field for a single. Reed scored from second to give Brevard County its first lead of the game, 3-2. After Roache swiped second base, Mike Garza walked to continue the rally. Cameron Garfield then took a hack at the first pitch he saw and lined it into right-center field. Roache came home to score from second and Garza moved to third on the RBI single to push the advantage to 4-2. That was all for Ridenhour. The right-hander took his eighth loss of the season, as he allowed four runs on three hits. He walked two and recorded just one out. Ethan Stewart came out of the bullpen for the Threshers to get the final two outs of the inning. In the process, he allowed one of Ridenhour's inherited runners to score on an RBI fielder's choice by Garrett Cooper, which made it 5-2. However, the Threshers would not go down quietly in the bottom of the frame. Right-handed reliever Tyler Spurlin, who recorded the final out in the eighth, stayed on to face the middle of the Clearwater lineup. Jesmuel Valentin walked on five pitches to bring J.P. Crawford to the dish. The Phillies first-round pick from 2013 turned on a 2-1 pitch and drove it over the right-center field wall for a two-run home run to cut the lead to 5-4. The blast, which landed on the berm, was Crawford's second long ball of the game and his eighth with Clearwater. Five of those eight home runs with the Threshers have come against Brevard County. Brandon Short would then ground out to short for the first out, but Clearwater kept the pressure on the 'Tees. Brian Pointer followed with a five-pitch walk to put the tying run on base. That was it for Spurlin, as 34-year-old Jon Huizinga came on to try and pick up his first save in affiliated baseball since 2003. The side-armer struck out Martinez to tally the second out of the inning, but then gave up a single to Art Charles. With the tying run at third and the winning run at first, Huizinga hunkered down. Arcia fielded a high chopper off the bat of Corey Bass and threw on to first base to record the final out of the game. By recording the final two outs, Huizinga picked up his first save with the Manatees. Spurlin recorded his first career Florida State League win and his first since July 4 when he was pitching for the Class-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. There wasn't much offense throughout the first eight innings of the ballgame. Clearwater took the initial lead in the first on Crawford's first home run of the game. Brevard County rallied it to tie it in the seventh on an RBI ground out by Garza after a triple to right-center by Reed. Charles then gave the Threshers a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth with his team-leading 19th home run of the season. Both starters were phenomenal, but neither factored into the decision after a wild ninth inning. Manatees starter Hobbs Johnson (11-8, 3.05 ERA), who had a 9.42 ERA in three daytime starts entering the game, was stellar over 7.2 innings. He yielded just two runs on four hits, walked two and struck out two. Clearwater's starter Miguel Nunez (5-7, 4.82) was equally great in his longest start of the season. The right-hander went eight innings and allowed one run on four hits. He punched out five and walked one. Nunez's impressive outing comes after yielding 12 runs on 18 hits over 9.1 innings in his first two starts against the Manatees. Brevard County will have an off day tomorrow before a doubleheader on Tuesday against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (19-44, 61-69) to start a six-day, seven-game homestand at Space Coast Stadium to wrap up the 2014 regular season. Game one will begin at 5:05 p.m. and is a resumption of a nine-inning contest that began at Joker Marchant Stadium on July 10. The game will pick up with Orf at first and a 3-2 count on Arcia with no one out in the top of the first inning. Right-hander Jorge Lopez (9-9, 4.30) will get the ball for the 'Tees when Lakeland comes to bat in the bottom of the frame. Left-hander Mike Strong (2-2, 2.67) will get the start in the seven-inning nightcap. That contest will begin a half-hour after the first game's completion. Brevard County Box Score Hobbs Johnson started and went 7.2 innings giving up two runs. Tyler Spurlin followed and gave up two runs in two-thirds of an inning but picked up the win. Jon Huizinga recorded the final two outs to earn his first save. Michael Reed led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and a walk. Tyrone Taylor, Cameron Garfield, Victor Roache, Garrett Cooper and Nathan Orf each added a base hit. Brevard County Play-By-Play The eventful ninth inning. 13. Final: Brevard County 6, Clearwater 2 Homers derail 'Tees in 6-2 loss to Clearwater Brevard County drops its first game at Bright House Field in 2014 By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees CLEARWATER, Fla. - A pair of two-run home runs in the fourth inning sparked the Clearwater Threshers to victory over the Brevard County Manatees, 6-2 on Saturday night at Bright House Field. The Manatees (31-30 second half, 67-60 overall) held a 1-0 lead with one out in the fourth before starter Tyler Wagner (13-6, 1.91 ERA) ran into trouble. Art Charles walked to put a runner on and Brian Pointer ripped a line drive to deep right field. The ball carried over the fence for Pointer's 15th long ball of the season and Clearwater (28-35, 45-86) took the lead, 2-1. The Threshers were not done yet, as Harold Martinez followed the gopher ball with a laser off the bottom of the wall in center. The ball kicked away from Tyrone Taylor, which allowed Martinez to end up at third with a stand-up triple. Chris Serritella, who hit a three-run home run in the first inning of game one on Friday, then put a charge into one to deep right. The 0-2 pitch carried well over the wall for Clearwater's second two-run shot of the frame. The blast was Serritella's sixth homer of the year and the Threshers had a 4-1 advantage. Clearwater pushed across its final two runs off Wagner in the fifth. After Roman Quinn walked and Jesmuel Valentin singled to start the frame, J.P. Crawford ripped a line drive into right-center field. The ball split Taylor and Michael Reed and rolled to the wall. Both runners came across to score on the double by Crawford to extend the lead to 6-1. Wagner's night ended after that inning. Statistically, the Las Vegas native had his worst start of the season. Wagner issued a season-worst six runs on season-high-tying eight hits in his five innings. He walked two and struck out seven. Tonight's outing was just the second start since June 3 in which Wagner allowed more than one earned run. His counterpart, Kevin Walter (2-3, 4.61) worked through a shaky first inning to baffle the 'Tees over his final four innings. The right-hander, making just his third start of the year, allowed just one hit in his final four frames. In total, Walter allowed one run on three hits, walked two and punched out three to record his second consecutive victory. As a starter this year, Walter is now 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA. Brevard County pushed across a run against reliever Aaron Baker in the seventh, but could not pull any closer. With one out, Alfredo Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and Mike Garza singled to center to put runners at first and second. After a Brandon Macias ground out, Nathan Orf grounded a single to center to score Rodriguez and move Garza to third to trim the lead to 6-2. Ulises Joaquin then came out of the bullpen to close the door for the home team. The right-hander sat down seven of the eight batters he faced to finish off Clearwater's victory and his seventh Florida State League save of the year. The 'Tees bats showed life in defeat, as they tallied eight hits on the evening. Garza led the offense with a 3-for-4 night, which included a double of Joaquin in the ninth. Arcia and Reed had multi-hit games, as well. Arcia went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored on Reed's RBI single to center in the first. Scott Lieser pitched beautifully for the Manatees in relief. In three innings of work, the Minnesota native shutout the Threshers and allowed just two hits. He struck out one and did not walk a batter. The second of Lieser's hits was erased on an incredible defensive play by Victor Roache. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Pointer hit a sinking line drive into the left-center field gap. Roache ranged to his left and made a gorgeous head-long dive to make the catch. Charles, who doubled a batter earlier, was caught too far off second base. Roache staggered to his feet and made a strong throw onto Orf at second to double off the runner and end the inning. Brevard County will go for the series victory against Clearwater tomorrow afternoon with first pitch at Bright House Field scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Southpaw Hobbs Johnson (11-8, 3.09) gets the start for the 'Tees against right-hander Miguel Nunez (5-7, 4.82). Brevard County Box Score It was a rare clunker for Tyler Wagner who took the loss for the Manatees after allowing six runs in five innings of work. Scott Lieser worked the final three innings without allowing a run. Mike Garza went 3-for-4 with a double. Orlando Arcia had two singles and a walk, and Michael Reed went 2-for-4. 14. Final: Brevard County 7, Clearwater 6 (Game One) Brevard rallies back to stun Clearwater in extras Manatees erase six-run deficit to take game one By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees erased a six-run first inning deficit to defeat the Clearwater Threshers, 7-6 in extra innings in game one of Friday's doubleheader at Bright House Field. With the game tied at six in the top of the eighth, Mike Garza grounded a single to center to lead off the inning. Brandon Macias then pushed him to second with a sacrifice bunt to first. Following a walk to Nathan Orf, Garza was removed and Jose Sermo came in to pinch-run. That set up a matchup between Clearwater reliever Lee Ridenhour and Orlando Arcia. The Manatees shortstop wasted no time in delivering the go-ahead blow. On the first pitch, Arcia grounded a single through the hole between short and third base. Herlis Rodriguez's throw to the plate was high and Sermo slid in safely to give Brevard County (30-29 second half, 66-59 overall) its first lead of the game, 7-6. Manatees reliever Stephen Peterson, who had already thrown two scoreless innings to this point, retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning to close out the come-from-behind victory. The victory marked the Manatees largest comeback of the year. Clearwater (27-34, 44-85) jumped out to a 6-0 lead against starter Taylor Williams (1-1, 4.05 ERA) thanks to a pair of three-run home runs by Art Charles and Chris Serritella. Brevard County started its comeback trail right away by scoring a run in each of the next three innings. After a lead-off triple to right-center field by Michael Reed in the second, Victor Roache drove him home with an RBI single to left to trim the advantage to 6-1. In the third, Macias started the inning with a double down the left field line. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Orf scored him with a sacrifice fly to center to cut the deficit to 6-2. Roache did all the damage for the 'Tees in the fourth with a solo blast onto the berm in left-center for his team-leading 16th home run of the year. All of a sudden, the Threshers six run lead was down to three. After bending for three straight frames, the 'Tees finally got Clearwater starter Colin Kleven (6-9, 4.55) to break in the fifth thanks to some defensive miscues. Macias got hit by a pitch to begin the inning and Orf followed with tapper to second. Jesmuel Valentin's throw to second base to get the force was a tad short. Shortstop J.P. Crawford could not hold the bag when he lunged for the ball and everyone was safe on the fielder's choice. The next play resulted in a similar outcome when Arcia hit a ground ball to third. Harold Martinez fielded and threw on to second base to try and start a double play, but his throw was way wide and Valentin had to range for off the base to make sure the ball did not go into the outfield. Arcia was on board on the fielder's choice and the throwing error by Martinez and the bases were loaded. Kleven lasted just one more batter. The 6-foot-5 right-hander walked Tyrone Taylor to bring a run across and which cut the lead to 6-4. Left-hander Cody Forsythe emerged from the bullpen, but had trouble with his location. On a 1-2 pitch to Reed, the southpaw spiked a pitch in the dirt and it squirted away from catcher Gabriel Lino. Orf raced home from third and the other two runners moved up a base and Manatees were now behind, 6-5. After Reed struck out, Roache came through with the game-tying knock. On a 1-0 pitch, Roache slapped a ball into shallow center field. Roman Quinn broke in, but had to field the ball on a hop. Roache's third RBI of the game scored Arcia and Brevard had rallied all the way back to knot the game up at six. With game still tied, Clearwater had a chance to go out in front against Peterson in the sixth, but the savvy veteran put an end to the threat. After a pair of singles by Rodriguez and Quinn put runners at the corners with one out, the Danvers, Mass. native struck out both Valentin and Crawford to end the inning. Peterson came away with his fourth victory of the year after three innings of shutout relief. The left-hander did not allow a run on two hits and punched out three without walking a batter. Ridenhour allowed just one run on two hits and walked one over two innings, as he took his seventh loss of the season. Kleven did not factor into the decision. He allowed six runs - four earned - on four hits and two walks in four-plus frames. The right-hander also struck out five. Despite a six-run first inning, Williams held down the fort for Brevard County and kept them in the game. The 2013 draftee did not allow a run and prevented Clearwater from putting a runner in scoring position over his final four innings of work. The righty finished with six runs allowed on a career-high nine hits, walked two and whiffed five in the no-decision. Three Brevard hitters recorded multi-hit games in the victory. Roache led the charge with a season-high-tying three hits, while Arcia and Macias each picked up a pair. Macias had four productive at-bats with a double, a single, a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice bunt. The extra-inning victory was Brevard County's third of the season. All three wins have come at Bright House Field against the Threshers. The first came on April 30, when Macias delivered the go-ahead base-hit in a 7-6 victory in 11 innings. Arcia hit a game-tying two run shot in the ninth and Alfredo Rodriguez drove home two in the 12th to lead the Manatees to victory in the second win on June 28. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Play-By-Play Final: Brevard County 7, Clearwater 2 (Game Two) Berberet goes deep twice, as Brevard sweeps twinbill Brevard County picks up a half-game in the standings with the doubleheader sweep By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees CLEARWATER, Fla. - Brevard County catcher Parker Berberet collected his first career multi-home run game, as the Manatees defeated the Clearwater Threshers, 7-2 in game two of Friday's doubleheader at Bright House Field. After a thrilling comeback in game one, the Manatees' (31-29 second half, 67-59 overall) offense exploded early in the nightcap. Brevard County tallied a run in the first and five more in the second to jump out to a 6-0 advantage. Orlando Arcia incited the first inning rally against Threshers starter Jeb Stefan (6-12, 6.57 ERA) with a one out single to center. After he advanced to second on a ground out to short by Tyrone Taylor, the Venezuelan native came across to score on an RBI single to center by Michael Reed to give the 'Tees the early lead, 1-0. Berberet got things started in the next inning. On a 1-1 pitch, he ripped a line drive down the left field line. The ball stayed fair and carried over the wall for a solo home run - Berberet's first of the season - to give Brevard County a two-run cushion. It only got worse from there for Stefan, Garrett Cooper and Greg Hopkins followed the Berberet blast with a pair of singles. Jose Sermo then walked on four pitches to load the bases for Nathan Orf. The former Baylor Bear cranked a ball into the left-center field gap that got down for extra bases. Both Cooper and Hopkins scored, while Sermo ended up at third. Orf was in at second with a stand-up double and the 'Tees were now in front, 4-0. Brevard County picked up its final two runs of the frame on a pair of productive outs. Arcia grounded out to short and Taylor hit a sacrifice fly to center to score both Sermo and Orf to make it 6-0 Manatees. With the score now 6-1, Berberet utilized the long ball again the sixth. Stefan left a 3-2 pitch over the plate and the former 25th-round pick crushed over the wall in right. The clout was Berberet's second home run of the game - and the season - extended the lead to, 7-1. J.P. Crawford drove home Clearwater's (27-35, 44-86) first run with a ground out to short in the third, while Art Charles clobbered his second home run of the doubleheader - and his 18th of the season - with a solo shot to right in the sixth. Manatees starter Chad Pierce (3-8, 4.60) threw well, but did not pitch long enough to factor into the decision. The right-hander left the game with one out in the top of the third inning with what appeared to be tightness in his lower back. The Wisconsin native yielded just one run on one hit over 2.1 innings. He walked three and struck out two. With the bullpen taxed after a rough series in Tampa, Martin Viramontes saved the day by giving the Manatees four innings of dominant relief. After allowing one of Pierce's inherited runners to score, the right-hander shut down the Clearwater attack by allowing just one run on three hits. Viramontes walked two and struck out a season-high seven to pick up his second win of 2014. Left-hander Trevor Seidenberger came on to relieve Viramontes with one out in the seventh to record the final two outs of the game. After a rocky first two innings, Stefan settled in and gave the Threshers some length. He allowed seven runs on seven hits, but retired 13 in a row at one point, from the second until the sixth. Stefan issued one walk and punched out six in his league-leading 12th loss of the year. By sweeping Friday's doubleheader, the Manatees are now an incredible 8-0 at Bright House Field this season. In all eight games, Brevard County has scored five or more runs. When the 'Tees score five or more they usually come out on top, as they have posted a 39-6 record when they do such this year. Brevard County and Clearwater will battle again tomorrow with first pitch at Bright House Field scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tyler Wagner (13-5, 1.60) will go for his league-leading 14th victory of the season against right-hander Kevin Walter (1-3, 4.83). 15. Final: Brevard County 6, Tampa 10 'Tees 10 hits not enough in 10-6 loss to Tampa Brevard County pitching staff strikes out 11 in defeat By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees TAMPA, Fla. - Despite recording 10 hits and striking out 11 batters, the Brevard County Manatees fell to the Tampa Yankees, 10-6 on Thursday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. After Brevard County (29-29 second half, 65-59 overall) out to a 1-0 lead on a Mike Garza RBI double, the Yankees (32-28, 65-65) bats exploded in the third inning and went on to score at least one run in every inning until the end of the seventh. Once again, it was the long ball that keyed Tampa's success. After Manatees starter Jorge Lopez (9-9, 4.30 ERA) kept the Yankees hitless through the first two innings, Ericson Leonora and Reymond Nunez smashed back-to-back home runs to lead off the third, which gave Tampa the lead, 2-1. Courtesy of Nunez, the Yankees broke the game wide open in the fourth. After the first run came across on a fielder's choice by Jose Rosario, Lopez struck out Trent Garrison for the second out of the inning. Following a walk to Leonora, Nunez hammered another ball deep to left field. Once again, the ball carried out of the ballpark; this time it was a three-run home run to make it 6-1, Tampa. The blast was Nunez's second home run of the game and third long ball in his last two contests. With a double in the seventh, the first baseman finished his night with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with four runs driven in. The Yankees would push across two more runs against Lopez in the fifth. After walking the first two batters of the frame, Jon Huizinga came out of the bullpen. The 34-year-old got through the inning, but could not keep the inherited runners from scoring. With one out, Trent Garrison laced a double passed a diving Michael Reed in right to drive home two more runs to make it 8-2. Mike Ford ripped a run-scoring single in the sixth off Huizinga and Mark Payton drove home Tampa's final tally in the seventh with a single to center off Tyler Spurlin. In the last two games played at George M. Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees scored 21 runs on 31 hits. This comes directly after Tampa scored just one run on 11 hits in the first two games of the series in Viera. Lopez took his ninth loss of the season after going just four-plus innings. The right-hander allowed eight runs on six hits, walked four and struck out five. Huizinga utilized the strike out a lot more in his second appearance with the 'Tees. The side-armer punched out five batters in his two innings of work. Huizinga also yielded one run on three hits and walked three in his second game in affiliated baseball since 2003. Brevard County's offense showed fight, as they put the tying run on deck in the ninth inning. The first four batters reached base against reliever Ramon Benjamin, which included an RBI double by Orlando Arcia and a run-scoring single by Reed, but could not get any closer. The Manatees hit well against Tampa starter Brett Gerritse (5-7, 4.12). With the Yankees leading 6-2, Brevard County chased the righty from the game in the sixth when they put they brought the tying run to the plate. After three singles and a sacrifice fly by Cameron Garfield, Gerritse got Greg Hopkins to fly out to right to end his evening. With two down, right-hander Caleb Cotham, who was added to the Tampa roster from Double-A Trenton earlier in the day, came in out of the bullpen. After surrendering an RBI single to Nathan Orf, Cotham struck out Arcia to end the threat. Gerritse picked up his fifth win of the season, despite allowing four runs over 5.2 innings. He gave up six hits, walked four and punched out five. Orf, Arcia, Reed and Garza all had solid nights with the bat. Each of the four players recorded two hits and drove home a run in the loss. Alfredo Rodriguez recorded a base-hit as well to extend his hitting streak to seven games. With the loss, Brevard County split the season series with Tampa at nine games apiece. The home team dominated in the series, as both squads went 7-2 in their home ballpark. With Daytona's victory, the Manatees are now four games back of first place in the Florida State League North Division. Back-to-back losses to the Yankees have also put Brevard County two games back of Tampa for second place in the division. The 'Tees will look to gain some ground tomorrow when they travel to Clearwater to take on the Threshers in a doubleheader. Game one will start at 5:00 p.m. at Bright House Field with game two slated to begin a half-hour after the first game's completion. Brevard County will be the home team in game two, as it is a makeup for a game that was postponed at Space Coast Stadium on August 10. Taylor Williams (1-1, 1.80) goes for his second straight victory in game one against right-hander Colin Kleven (6-9, 4.41). Chad Pierce (3-8, 4.63) gets the spot start in the nightcap for the Manatees. Clearwater's game two starter has yet to be named. Brevard County Box Score Brevard County Play-By-Play

Steinbrenner Field. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) TAMPA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees four-game winning streak came to an end, as the Tampa Yankees came out on top with an 11-1 victory at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Wednesday night. Tampa's (31-28 second half, 64-65 overall) bats, which collected 11 hits in the first two games of the series against Brevard County (29-28, 65-58) at Space Coast Stadium, exploded for 11 runs on 18 hits. After both teams put up zeroes in the first, the Yankees pieced together some timely hitting. Jose Rosario walked and Ericson Leonora singled to start the attack for Tampa in the second. With runners at first and second, Mike Ford then hit a chopping ball to first base. Initially looking like a possible double play, the ball took a bizarre hop off the infield dirt before caroming off Manatees first baseman Garrett Cooper's shoulder. As the ball rolled towards the outfield, Rosario hustled to score all the way from second to give the Yankees the lead, 1-0. A two-out base knock in the third brought home another run for Tampa. Manatees starter Mike Strong (2-2, 2.67 ERA) sandwiched an Aaron Judge double around a pair of strikeouts, but could not emerge unscathed. Leonora smacked a base-hit through the hole on the left side to score Judge and make it 2-0, Yankees. However, the inning would end there, as Leonora was gunned down trying to advance to second on the relay throw to the plate. Tampa then used the long ball to pad its advantage the rest of the way. Reymond Nunez, Mark Payton and Aaron Judge all went deep to bring home seven of the Yankees final nine runs. Judge's blast in the eighth, which made it 11-1, was a titanic shot. The Yankees' third first-round pick from 2013, hammered a pitch from Brevard County reliever Trevor Seidenberger over the massive jumbotron in left for a three-run home run. Judge's clout was his eighth long ball with Tampa and 17th total. Payton had a banner night, as well. The 2014 draftee out of Texas went 4-for-4 with a walk and a two-run homer to set a career-high in hits and total bases - seven - in a single game. The Yankees pushed across their other two runs on a wild pitch in the seventh and an RBI single by Eric Jagielo in the eighth. Strong would end up taking his first loss since he pitched in relief on June 6 against Bradenton. The southpaw allowed the first four Yankee runs on a career-high 10 hits in five innings. Strong also walked two and punched out six. Brevard County's offense could not cash in despite having their fair share of opportunities. The Manatees recorded six hits and put at least one runner in scoring position in each of the first five innings, but Yankee starter Caleb Smith (4-1, 4.45) held them without a run. The 'Tees tallied their only run in the sixth, once Smith was removed from the ballgame. The Sam Houston State alum allowed two other baserunners on walks and struck out five in the victory. Trailing 4-0, Brevard County had a chance to tie the game against reliever Philip Walby in that sixth inning, but was unable to do so. With the bases loaded and one out, Parker Berberet broke up the shutout with a run-scoring single to left, but that was all the 'Tees would get. Walby struck out Brandon Macias and forced Nathan Orf to ground into an inning-ending fielder's choice to quell the rally. The Manatees finished the night with nine hits, but left 12 runners on-base. The team's hitting struggles with runners in scoring position continued, as the team went 1-for-12 in that situation on Wednesday night. Brevard was led by Berberet, Victor Roache and Orlando Arcia, all three of which had multi-hit nights. Alfredo Rodriguez and Tyrone Taylor picked up base-knocks as well to extend their hitting streaks to six and eight games, respectively. The Manatees and Yankees will wrap up their season series tomorrow night at 7 p.m. Jorge Lopez (9-8, 3.86) will get the start and looks to become the third Brevard County pitcher to reach double-digits in wins. He will be opposed by right-hander Brett Gerritse (4-7, 3.97). Brevard County Box Score Mike Strong started and took the loss after giving up four runs in five innings. 19. Final: Tampa 1, Brevard County 2 Taylor's walk-off single gives 'Tees 2-1 victory Manatees pick up third walk-off win to stay alive in playoff hunt By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/8/2/90456582/cuts/photo_1_tet6km0p_ahgjkitn.JPG Brevard County center fielder Tyrone Taylor hit walk-off two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Manatees a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Yankees on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium. VIERA, Fla. - In improbable fashion, the Brevard County Manatees walked-off the Tampa Yankees, 2-1 on a game-winning single by Tyrone Taylor on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium. With Brevard County (29-27 second half, 65-57 overall) trailing 1-0 with one out in the bottom of the ninth, Brandon Macias lined a single into right field off Yankees reliever Chris Smith. On an 0-2 pitch, Nathan Orf hit a double play ground ball to short. Tampa shortstop Cito Culver, however, let the ball roll right between his legs and into left field. It was the second error of the game for Culver and all of a sudden the Manatees had the go-ahead and tying runs on base. Tampa (30-28, 63-65) would have another opportunity to close out the game, but could not do so. Orlando Arcia hit a ground ball back to the mound and Smith threw on to second to get the force. The twin killing could not be turned, as Orf utilized a perfect take out slide into the bag. As a result, Culver was unable to make the relay throw to first to try and complete the game-ending double play. With runners at the corners and two down, Taylor stepped in. Down to his final strike, the Brewers former second-round pick hit a flare off the end of the bat into shallow center field. Second baseman Anderson Feliz, who came in for Angelo Gumbs in the fifth inning, ranged into the outfield and dove head-first to try and make the play. After initially catching the ball, the ball squirted out of his glove as Feliz crashed onto the grass. Macias scored easily from third to the tie game. Arcia, who was running on the pitch, never let up and hustled all the way from first to slide in to score the game-winning run. Taylor was credited with a two-run single and the Manatees picked up their third walk-off victory of 2014. It was the first game-ending base-hit by Brevard County since Jose Sermo delivered home run to defeat St. Lucie on July 18. Smith took the loss, his first with Tampa and his second overall in 2014. Both runs he allowed were unearned due to the error by Culver. Before Taylor's heroics, the story of the night was the performance by the Yankees' pitching staff. Led by starter Brady Lail (1-1, 4.62), Tampa carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning. With one out, Alfredo Rodriguez broke up the no-hit bid with a single to right-center off reliever Kyle Haynes. Lail, who did not allow a hit, went six innings and yielded just three baserunners on two walks and an error. The right-hander punched out three Manatees' hitters in his best start since being transferred to the Florida State League. Not to be overlooked, Brevard County starter Hobbs Johnson (11-8, 3.09) was dominant in his own right. After he surrendered a RBI single to Eric Jagielo in the first, the southpaw put the clamps down and did not allow a run for the rest of the night. Johnson tied a career-high with eight innings pitched and allowed four hits and one walk. The former North Carolina Tar Heel struck out seven, as he retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced. The Manatees bullpen was stellar yet again. Martin Viramontes collected his first win of the season after pitching a perfect ninth inning. Dating back to August 7 in Tampa, Brevard County's bullpen has not allowed a run in its last 16.2 innings. In a case of bizarre symmetry, tonight's finish was eerily similar to game two of a doubleheader in Tampa on August 6. Manatees starter Mike Strong, much like Lail tonight, was five outs away from completing a no-hitter, before it was broken up on a single. Both games ended in walk-offs, as well. That night, Aaron Judge got the game-winner in extras at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The four-game series will head to Tampa tomorrow; with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. Strong (2-1, 2.33) will look to follow up his complete game victory against Daytona last Thursday when he squares off with fellow lefty Caleb Smith (3-1, 5.33). (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - Alfredo Rodriguez blasted the first grand slam of the season for the Brevard County Manatees, as they went on to shutout the Tampa Yankees on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium, 8-0. Rodriguez's clout came during a big third inning for the Manatees. With the game scoreless, Nathan Orf was hit by a pitch for a Florida State League-leading 21st time and Orlando Arcia singled. Tyrone Taylor then tried to sacrifice bunt the runners over, but he raced to first base and beat out the throw from Yankees starting pitcher Miguel Sulbaran for a bunt single to load the bases. Michael Reed took advantage of the opportunity. He blooped a single into right that scored Orf with the first run of the game. Victor Roache then waited out Sulbaran (3-4, 3.52 ERA) and worked a walk to drive home another run and give Brevard County (28-27 second half, 64-57 overall) a 2-0 lead. That brought up Rodriguez. On a 1-0 count, Rodriguez drilled a Sulbaran offering over the left field wall to cap a six-run third inning and give the 'Tees a 6-0 lead. It was Rodriguez's first grand slam since his first career long ball on August 28, 2012 with the Helena Brewers in the Rookie Pioneer League. The grand slam was also the first by the Manatees since Nick Ramirez went deep with the bases loaded last year on June 23. Brevard added a pair of runs in the seventh inning on a single by Cameron Garfield and a defensive miscue in the Tampa outfield. With runners on first and second, Garfield hit a line drive to right field that easily scored Taylor. Yankees centerfielder Mark Payton ranged over to cut the ball off, but ran past it and the ball rolled into the gap. The error allowed Reed to motor home from first and the 'Tees grabbed an 8-0 advantage. Garfield was credited with one RBI and a single on the two-run play. On the mound, Tyler Wagner and Jon Huizinga combined to shut out the Yanks. Wagner (13-5, 1.60 ERA) pitched seven innings and fell one strikeout short of a season-high with eight. The right-hander gave up five hits and walked a pair to earn his second straight win and his fourth victory in five starts. Huizinga followed Wagner and shut the door in his first appearance in affiliated professional baseball since 2003. The 34-year old, who had spent the previous nine seasons pitching in various independent leagues, hurled two scoreless innings. Huizinga gave up two hits, but rolled a double play ball to get out of the eighth and induced another twin-killing for the first two outs of the ninth. The left-hander gave up six of Brevard County's runs over three innings. Sulbaran surrendered six hits, walked two and struck out two, as he fell to the 'Tees for the second time. 23. Final: Brevard County 3, Dunedin 2 With the Manatees heading back to Viera from Dunedin I'm anticipating their game story won't be posted until late tonight or tomorrow morning. So in the meantime, here's the Dunedin version. I'll update when Brevard has their story posted. Dunedin, FL - For the fifth-consecutive start, LHP Matt Boyd held the opposition to less than three earned runs, but the Blue Jays (27-29, 73-52) fell to 0-5 in those stellar starts with a 3-2 loss to the Brevard County Manatees (27-27, 63-57) on Sunday at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. Boyd allowed a run-scoring double play in the third inning, but otherwise kept the Manatees off the board through five strong innings on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts. LHP Chad Girodo (BS, 5)(L, 6-3) was summoned for the sixth with a 2-1 lead, and surrendered a pair of RBI doubles to give Brevard County its decisive 3-2 advantage. Victor Roache lined one to left-center to tie the game, and Parker Berberet split the gap in right-center to take the lead. RHP Will Browning limited the damage with 2.1 one-hit innings with no walks and three strikeouts, and RHP Danny Barnes pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, his third-consecutive perfect inning since returning from the disabled list last week. Dunedin took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a double from CF Dwight Smith, Jr. He tucked a sharp grounder inside first base to score 2B Christian Lopes, who had reached second on a two-base throwing error by shortstop Orlando Arcia. The Manatees tied the game at 1-1 in the third when Nathan Orf came home from third on a double play off the bat of Tyrone Taylor, but Dunedin quickly answered when 1B L.B. Dantzler drilled a solo homer over the right-field fence in the bottom of the fourth. Manatees starter Taylor Williams (W, 1-1) surrendered just one earned run in seven impressive innings on six hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. RHP Tyler Spurlin (H, 1) loaded the bases in the eighth on two walks and a single, but LHP Stephen Peterson (S, 4) recorded the final four outs of the ballgame in consecutive order to keep Dunedin at bay. Dantzler and RF Marcus Knecht both recorded multi hit games, while SS Shane Opitz had his nine-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-3, BB stat line. The Blue Jays will host the Lakeland Flying Tigers in a four-game series starting on Monday with RHP Jesse Hernandez (6-9, 5.11 ERA) taking on RHP Edgar De La Rosa (7-9, 2.98 ERA). 25. Final: Brevard County 5, Dunedin 1 Manatees strike out 13 Jays in 5-1 win By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/3/8/74946238/cuts/Lopez_5.9_1_640x360_ikyyb8wx_q4pi4mom.jpg Brevard County starting pitcher Jorge Lopez, seen here in a game from earlier this season, tied a season-high with eight strikeouts in Saturday night's win over the Dunedin Blue Jays at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) DUNEDIN, Fla. - Brevard County Manatees starter Jorge Lopez struck out eight men and the bullpen added five more punch-outs, as the Manatees defeated the Dunedin Blue Jays on Saturday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium, 5-1. Lopez (9-8, 3.86 ERA) was brilliant from the start. The right-hander recorded five of his first seven outs via strikeouts and did not allow a run until the fifth. Lopez finished with just one run allowed through five innings of work. He allowed three hits and walked three. The pitching dominance continued when Scott Lieser took the mound in the sixth. Lieser struck out three more men and only allowed one hit and one walk over two scoreless frames. Lefty Stephen Peterson then finished the job with a perfect ninth inning that included two strikeouts. Brevard County (26-27 second half, 62-57 overall) fell just two strikeouts shy of a season-high with 13 in total. The Manatees' bullpen has also been stellar since August 7. In that span, Brevard's relievers have yet to allow a run and have combined to pitch 11.2 consecutive scoreless innings. In terms of offense, the Manatees scored all of their runs in the third and fourth innings against D-Jays starter Roberto Osuna. In the third, Garrett Cooper and Greg Hopkins led off with free passes on a hit-by-pitch and a walk. Nathan Orf sacrifice bunted the pair into scoring position and Orlando Arcia came through with an RBI single up the middle to score Cooper with the first run of the game. After Arcia's single, Brevard County started to get crafty on the basepaths. Arcia swiped second base and Tyrone Taylor roped a single to left field to score Hopkins and move Arcia up to third. With runners on the corners and Michael Reed at the dish, Taylor took off for second. When D-Jays catcher Jorge Saez threw down to second, Arcia bolted for home. Second baseman Christian Lopes caught the throw from Saez and fired home, but Arcia dove past the tag and scored to give Brevard County a 3-0 lead. The 'Tees plated two more runs in the fourth inning. Alfredo Rodriguez hit a one-out single and Cooper dropped a double into left-center field to put a pair of runners in scoring position. That brought up Hopkins and the third baseman grounded a single through the left side. Both Rodriguez and Cooper scored to extend the Manatees' lead to 5-0. Dunedin (27-28, 73-51) scored its only run of the ballgame in the fifth inning. Shane Opitz started the frame with a single to extend his hitting streak to nine games and Saez followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Lopez then struck out Lopes and issued a walk to Nick Baligod to load the bases with one out. Dwight Smith, Jr. stepped up with his team trailing by five runs, but with the tying run in the on-deck circle. The left-handed hitter chopped a ground ball toward Cooper and the first baseman tried to turn a double play. He fielded the ball and threw to Arcia at second. Arcia got the first out and made a return throw to first base, where Lopez was covering the bag, but the throw pulled Lopez off the base. Smith was safe at first and Opitz scored from third to cut the Manatees' advantage to 5-1. Lopez picked up a victory for the first time in seven starts. Saturday night was the first time since his June 26 win that the right-hander had left a ballgame with the Manatees leading. Osuna (0-2, 10.03 ERA) took the loss for Dunedin. In his fourth start following Tommy John Surgery, the right-hander allowed all five Manatees runs over 3.1 innings of work. He surrendered seven hits, walked two and struck out four. Rodriguez and Arcia were the biggest thorns in Dunedin's side at the dish. Rodriguez produced his first three-hit game of the season with a 3-for-3 night that included a walk, a run and a stolen base. Arcia also had three knocks in a 3-for-5 performance. The shortstop doubled, drove home a run and scored a run. Arcia also swiped two bags to give him a team-best 10 stolen bases in August. With the victory, the Manatees have split the first two games against Dunedin and will go for the series win on Sunday night. First pitch at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Taylor Williams (0-1, 2.25 ERA) is expected to start for Brevard County against Matt Boyd (5-2, 1.07 ERA). Brevard County Box Score Hard to believe this was the first win for Jorge Lopez since June, but he pitched well, striking out eight and giving up just the one run. Scott Lieser pitched well in relief, allowing just one hit in three innings of work. Alfredo Rodriguez reached base in all four plate appearances, collecting three singles and a walk.
