  1. Final: Brevard County 9, Daytona 3 Manatees blast Daytona, 9-3 By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/0/0/80838200/cuts/Taylor_5.9_640x360_i6rzzjgg_mkyc2dii.jpg Brevard County center fielder Tyrone Taylor, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and one RBI in a 9-3 win over the Daytona Cubs on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Starting pitcher Tyler Wagner struck out a season-high nine hitters, while his offense tallied 14 hits in the Brevard County Manatees' 9-3 victory over the Daytona Cubs at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Friday night. Wagner (6-4, 1.96 ERA), who threw seven innings of shutout basesball against the Yankees in his last outing on June 9, blanked the Cubs over five frames. The Florida State League All-Star allowed just two hits and walked two en route to earning the win. The Manatees (1-1 second half, 37-31 overall) grabbed Wagner the lead before he even toed the rubber. Nathan Orf led off the game by depositing an 0-2 pitch off the left field wall for a double. Two batters later, Orf came across to score the game's opening run after a pair of ground outs by Orlando Arcia and Tyrone Taylor. It took until the sixth inning for Brevard County to break the game open. Thanks to a double by Taylor and a single plus a stolen base by Cameron Garfield, the Manatees had runners at second and third with one out for Nicky Delmonico. On a 2-2, Delmonico hit a broken bat, jam shot towards the third baseman. Jordan Hankins - who was making his FSL debut - could not field it cleanly and the ball trickled behind him, as Taylor crossed the plate. However, neither Hankins nor shortstop Marco Hernandez could decide who would pick up the unattended ball. As a result of the confusion, Garfield motored home from second base and Delmonico advanced to second to put Brevard up 4-0. After Delmonico was tagged out trying to advance to third on a dirt ball, Victor Roache demolished a pitch from Daytona reliever Jose Rosario over the left field fence for a solo homer - his team-leading eighth of the season - to put the Manatees up by five. Daytona (1-1, 28-42) rallied to score a run in the bottom of the sixth, on a RBI double by Dan Vogelbach. However, the 'Tees got two runs back in the top of the seventh. After a walk to Arcia and a Taylor double, Garfield poked a one-out, two-run single to left to extend the Manatees lead to 7-1. However, the Cubs' bats did not go down without a fight. Manatees releiver Martin Viramontes struggled to find the strike zone as he surrendered a single to Gioskar Amaya and issued a walk to Marco Hernandez, to start the bottom half of the inning. After a one-out walk to Wes Darvill, Greg Holle was called upon to try and get out of the jam. The tall righty forced Albert Almore to hit a run-scoring ground out back to the mound before facing Vogelback. Daytona's first baseban, who drove in two runs on a homer and a double the night prior, smacked a RBI double to pull the Cubs within four runs at 7-3. Holle then went on to retire seven of the last nine batters he faced, to finish off Brevard's first win of the second half. He threw 2.2 scoreless innings of relief and allowed three hits, along with three strikeouts. Roache's sixth inning blast was not the only long ball Brevard hit on the night. Yadiel Rivera smoked his third homer of the season, off of Cubs starter Nathan Dorris. Delmonico left no doubt as to the final outcome of the game as he crushed a two-run bomb off of Zack Godley. Brevard County's pitching staff struck out a season-high 15 and also received plenty of help from the defense. With the bases loaded and two outs in the third inning, Almora lofted a soft fly ball to shallow center field but Taylor made a tremendous sliding grab to take away multiple runs and end the inning. Not to be outdone, Arcia made an unreal, highlight play to end the sixth. With runners on second and third with two outs, Hankins flipped a high pop-up down the third-base line in foul territory. Delmonico raced towards the fence, but seemed to lose the ball in the lights. Out of nowhere, Arcia came storming in and made an incredible, feet-first, sliding grab in the Daytona bullpen to end the threat. Brevard's bats as a whole had a fantastic night as the 'Tees compiled 14 hits, with eight of them going for extra bases. All but one player in the lineup picked up at least one hit. The lone player who did not, Arcia, still managed to reach base twice on walks. Five players - Orf, Taylor, Garfield, Rivera and Mike Garza - all tallied multi-hit games in the victory. The Manatees will stay on the road and open up a three-game series at 6:30 p.m. with North Division first half champions, the Dunedin Blue Jays. Jorge Lopez (7-2, 2.69) will get the ball for Brevard County, while Dunedin will counter with Kendall Graveman (5-3, 3.24) Brevard County Box Score A season high nine strikeouts from Tyler Wagner in just five innings of work and his ERA is under 2.00 now for the season. You'd have to think he'd be in line for a bump up to Huntsville before too much longer. Nice to see the home run balls leaving the yard tonight also. Home runs from Victor Roache, Yadiel Rivera and Nicky Delmonico as eight of Brevard's 14 hits went for extra bases. Two more doubles from Tyrone Taylor, gives him 27 for the year. Brevard County Play-By-Play Nice start to the night for Wagner, who retired the first five batters he faced via the strikeout. Daytona Bottom of the 1st Zeke DeVoss strikes out swinging. Wes Darvill strikes out swinging. Albert Almora strikes out swinging. Daytona Bottom of the 2nd Dan Vogelbach strikes out swinging. Willson Contreras called out on strikes. Bijan Rademacher grounds out, third baseman Nick Delmonico to first baseman Mike Garza.
  2. Final: Brevard County 4, Daytona 7 Brevard drops second half opener to Cubs, 7-4 By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/7/5/2/80677752/cuts/Orf_6.16_640x360_7vw7dou0_g24jx3p4.jpg Manatees designated hitter Nathan Orf went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Brevard County's 7-4 loss to the Daytona Cubs on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - In the first game of the second half, a big seventh inning by the Daytona Cubs sank the Brevard County Manatees, 7-4 at Space Coast Stadium on Thursday night. Brevard County (0-1 second half, 36-31 overall) was clinging to a 4-3 lead at the start of the seventh and it looked like the score would remain that way. However with two outs, Albert Almora ripped a double to left-center field off of reliever Chad Pierce to keep the inning alive. Dan Vogelbach came up next and delivered the biggest hit of the game to that point. He drilled a double to score Almora and tie the game. After Pierce walked Bijan Rademacher to put a pair on with two outs, the Manatees called on Kevin Shackelford out of the bullpen to try to escape the inning with the tie intact. The first hitter he faced was Wilson Contreras and the catcher greeted him rudely by hitting a laser to left-center field. Contreras' double scored both Vogelbach and Rademacher to give the Cubs a 6-4 lead. Daytona (1-0, 27-42) tacked on one more insurance run in the eighth inning before Andrew McKirahan finished off the win. The left-hander allowed a double to Nathan Orf, but otherwise retired the Manatees for his sixth save of the season. Daytona and Brevard traded runs early in the evening. The Cubs took advantage of Damien Magnifico's erratic control in the first inning. The 'Tees starter walked the first two men he faced and skipped a wild pitch past Cameron Garfield to score Pin-Chie Chen with the first run of the game. Vogelbach later hammered a solo homer to left-center to give Daytona a 2-0 lead. The Manatees answered in the bottom of the inning. Orf led off with a single and Orlando Arcia slammed a double to bring him home. Later in the inning, Nicky Delmonico tied the ballgame with an RBI single. Two innings later, the Manatees took their first and only lead of the game. Tyrone Taylor led off the inning with a triple and Michael Reed knocked him home with a double to put the 'Tees ahead, 3-2. Delmonico then came through with his second big hit of the night, as he smacked an RBI double to extend the lead to two runs. After Daytona pulled within one run in the third on an RBI single by Gioskar Amaya, Taylor made a tremendous throw from center field to preserve Brevard County's lead. With Rock Shoulders on second and one out, Zeke DeVoss singled up the middle. Shoulders rounded third and tried to score, but Taylor unleashed a bullet of a throw to the plate. Garfield slapped the tag on Shoulders to keep the 'Tees on top by one run. The Manatees eventually relinquished that lead and Cubs reliever Starling Peralta came away with a much-deserved win in relief. Peralta, who relieved starter Felix Pena in the fourth inning, pitched 4.2 perfect frames and struck out four. Pierce took the loss in relief, as he allowed three runs, including the tying and go-ahead runs, over 2.2 innings of work. He gave up two hits, walked two and struck out four. In his shortest start since May 1, Magnifico allowed three runs on six hits, while walking four and fanning four in four innings. Brevard County and Daytona will face off again on Friday night, this time at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tyler Wagner (5-4, 2.09) will get the starting nod for the Manatees against southpaw Nathan Dorris (2-3, 5.96) for the Cubs. 5. Final: Dunedin 2, Brevard County 5 Ross leads 'Tees in sweep of Dunedin Brevard closes out first half with 10-5 win over Blue Jays By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/3/4/80496334/cuts/Ross_6.18_1_640x360_9654gbvb_yo00dkyd.jpg Brevard County starting pitcher Austin Ross struck out seven in 7.1 innings of work as the Manatees defeated the Dunedin Blue Jays, 5-2 on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - Behind one of the longest starts of his career, Austin Ross helped the Brevard County Manatees to a 5-2 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium, to complete to a three-game series sweep and close out the first half of the season. Ross (6-1, 2.75 ERA) was dominant from the start and did not allow a Blue Jays hit or base runner through the first three innings. The starter struck out five batters in those three perfect frames. Even after Ross allowed a single to Dwight Smith, Jr. to the start of the fourth, the righty went right back to overpowering Dunedin's hitters. Ross followed up the single with a double play ball and proceeded to set the next seven men down in order. In doing so, Ross faced the minimum 18 batters through six innings. Despite allowing a one-out single and stolen base to Dalton Pompey, Ross also pitched a scoreless seventh as he worked into the eighth inning for the first time this year. He retired Santiago Nessy on a fly out to right to start the inning, but then ran into trouble. The Manatees (36-30) held a 5-0 lead, but the Ross gave up back-to-back singles against Nick Baligod and Peter Mooney. Andy Fermin then laced a two-run double to right-center to cut Brevard's advantage to 5-2. Ross' night ended shortly thereafter, as he walked the next batter, Christian Lopes, to put runners on first and second with just one out. Brevard County called on left-hander Stephen Peterson to get out of the jam and he did exactly that. Peterson wasted no time in inducing a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. That twin-killing closed the book on Ross, as his 7.1 innings pitched were a season-high and tied his career high. He struck out seven men, walked just one and surrendered two runs on five Dunedin (46-23) hits. Peterson worked the ninth, as well. Though the southpaw walked the leadoff man, he finished off the Blue Jays with a ground out and two strikeouts to notch his second save of the year. Brevard County scored all of its runs against Dunedin starter Taylor Cole in the third and fourth. With one out in the third, Parker Berberet dribbled an infield single in the grass to the third base side of the mound and Brandon Macias worked a walk. Two batters later, Orlando Arcia plated the first two runs of the ballgame on a ringing two-out double to left-center. The Manatees quickly threatened in the fourth, as well. Back-to-back singles by Michael Reed and Yadiel Rivera, combined with a walk by Victor Roache, loaded the bases with nobody out. Alfredo Rodriguez then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Reed and moved Rivera to third, as the 'Tees extended their lead to 3-0. After Cole struck out the next batter, Roache moved to second on a wild pitch to give the 'Tees a pair of runners in scoring position for Macias. The third baseman knocked in both Roache and Rivera with a single to left to put Brevard up 5-0. With those five runs, Cole (5-3, 2.60) was hit with the loss. Cole struck out six over five innings to push his Minor League-leading strikeout total to 101. He also walked two and gave up seven hits in the defeat. Brevard County finished the first half of the 2014 season with a 36-30 record and a winning mark of 5-4 against the Blue Jays, who won the Florida State League North Division in the first half. The 'Tees begin the second half against the Daytona Cubs on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Damien Magnifico (3-4, 3.05) is scheduled to start for the 'Tees against Cubs right-hander Felix Pena (1-6, 2.59). Brevard County Box Score Nice start from Austin Ross, working in to the eighth inning and giving up just the two runs with seven punchouts. Nathan Orf had the only multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. 6. Final: Dunedin 5, Brevard County 10 Taylor's four-hit night paces Brevard past Dunedin Manatees tally 15 hits in 10-5 win over Blue Jays, as Johnson earns seventh win By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - After a few quiet nights at the plate, Tyrone Taylor exploded with the bat to lead the Brevard County Manatees to a 10-5 victory over the Dunedin Blue Jays at Space Coast Stadium on Tuesday night. Taylor put back-to-back hitless nights to the side by piecing together a 4-for-5 game at the plate. Milwaukee's number two prospect according to Baseball America, doubled, singled three times and drove in four runs. The Manatees' (35-30) offense gave starter Hobbs Johnson (7-6, 2.57 ERA) plenty of support by scoring six runs in the second inning. After three straight singles to start the frame by Michael Reed, Cameron Garfield and Victor Roache, first baseman Mike Garza stepped to the plate. The 'Tees hottest hitter roped a high fly ball to left-center field for a two-run double to put Brevard in front, 2-0. Consecutive walks to Yadiel Rivera and Nathan Orf brought home another run to push the lead to three. That brought an end to the night for Dunedin starter Ben White (3-4, 4.98) as left-handed reliever Chad Girodo came out of the bullpen to try and stop the damage. The first batter he faced was Orlando Arcia, who deflected a ball off the new pitcher. Girodo recovered and threw out Arcia, but Garza raced home to make it a 4-0 game. Taylor then blew the game wide open as he smacked a two-run single into left-center to make it a 6-0 advantage. After Dunedin (46-22) added runs in the third and fourth on an RBI single by L.B. Dantzler and a solo home run by Gustavo Pierre, respectively, the Manatees padded their lead yet again. Orf and Arcia led off the fourth inning with singles which set the stage for Taylor yet again. After a double steal put runners at second and third, Taylor lined a base hit into left field to drive in Orf and make it 7-2, Brevard County. One batter later, Reed hit a slow chopper towards third base. Pierre charged and made an accurate throw on to first base, but Reed's speed was too much as he beat it out for an infield single. That allowed Arcia to cross the plate and extend the Manatee lead back up to six. The 'Tees added two more runs off the Dunedin bullpen in the fifth. With two outs, Rivera singled to right and Orf walked to spark yet another rally. Arcia and Taylor then followed with RBI singles to right and center field respectively, to put Brevard comfortably ahead, 10-2. The Blue Jays made the Manatees sweat out the final few outs by pushing three runs across off Michael Strong with two outs in the eighth inning. After a walk to Dantzler, Santiago Nessy ripped an RBI double to left-center to cut the Brevard lead to 10-3. After another walk to Baligod, Emilio Guerrero drove in both base runners with a double to trim the lead to 10-5. That was as close as Dunedin would get. After Guerrero's base-hit, Mark Williams was called upon to finish the Blue Jays. The right-hander retired all four batters he faced to close out the Manatees win. Johnson put together another strong performance as he picked up the victory. He allowed two runs - one earned - on five hits over five innings of work. Johnson struck out four and walked just one en route to his seventh win of the year, which puts him in a four-way tie for the league-lead. It was not just Taylor who had a phenomenal night at the plate. The Manatees racked up 15 hits against Dunedin pitching and three other players recorded multi-hit nights. Arcia, Reed and Garza all tallied two base knocks and combined for five RBI. The Manatees will look for the sweep on Wednesday night as the wrap up their three-game series against the Blue Jays at 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. A pair of five-game winners will face off, as Austin Ross (5-1, 2.79) gets the call for Brevard against Dunedin's Florida State League All-Star Taylor Cole (5-2, 2.19). Brevard County Box Score The Manatees seem to be good for one of these games every so often where they struggle, struggle, struggle and then just unload on a team all at once. Ten runs on fifteen hits. Every player in the Brevard lineup had at least one hit. Tyrone Taylor went 4-for-5 with a double and knocked in four runs. He also stole a base, as did Orlando Arcia who had a 2-for-5 night. Brevard County Play-By-Play Brevard County Bottom of the 2nd Michael Reed singles on a line drive to left fielder Nick Baligod. 9. Final: Dunedin 0, Brevard County 1 Lopez blanks Jays in 1-0 'Tees win By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/3/6/80125436/cuts/Lopez_6.16_640x360_hcx24ebk_8cdl7fx9.jpg Brevard County starting pitcher Jorge Lopez hurled seven shutout innings, en route to his seventh win of the season as the Manatees shut out the Dunedin Blue Jays, 1-0 on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - Behind another masterful performance by starting pitcher Jorge Lopez, the Brevard County Manatees shut out the Dunedin Blue Jays, 1-0 at Space Coast Stadium on Monday night. The right-hander, who is now locked in a three-way tie for the league lead in victories with seven, baffled Dunedin (46-21) over seven innings. He scattered five hits and did not walk a batter in a start for just the second time all year. Lopez (7-2, 2.69 ERA) also struck out six Blue Jays, falling one shy of tying his season-high. Lopez's brilliant performance did not require much help from his offense. The Manatees (34-30) scored the only run of the game off Dunedin starter Kendall Graveman (5-3, 3.42) in the bottom of the first. Orlando Arcia ripped a one-out double to right-center and then advanced to third after a fly out to right by Tyrone Taylor. The following batter Nicky Delmonico, took a 3-2 pitch low for ball four. However, the ball squirted past the catcher Santiago Nessy and Arcia raced home to score on the wild pitch to put Brevard in front, 1-0. Lopez also received plenty of help from his defense. In the seventh inning, Dunedin sparked a rally with back-to-back singles by Nick Baligod and Nessy to start the frame. Emilio Guerrero stepped in and smoked a line drive right to Arcia at second base. Arcia made the play, but got ahead of himself as he dropped the ball as he raced towards second base to try and double-up Baligod. The defensive gem of the game came one play later as Gustavo Pierre ripped a line drive into right field. Michael Reed sprinted in and dove to make a gorgeous head-first grab to rob Pierre of a base-hit. Reed then staggered to his feet and made a strong throw on to shortstop Yadiel Rivera, who stepped on the second base bag to retire Baligod and end the threat. Following Lopez's seven scoreless innings, the bullpen would finish the job for Brevard County's ninth shutout of the season. First, Martin Viramontes worked around a lead-off walk to throw a scoreless eighth inning. Kevin Shackelford then got out of a jam in the game's final frame to close out the victory and pick up his fourth save with the Manatees this year. After singles by L.B. Dantzler and Baligod started the ninth, Shackelford struck out Nessy swinging and then forced Guerrero to hit a tapper to third to start a game-ending, 5-3 double play. Mike Garza continued his hot hitting for the Manatees in the win. The first baseman went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles to raise his batting average to an impressive .295. Garza has now raised his batting average 62 points since May 28. Brevard County will turn to southpaw Hobbs Johnson (6-6, 2.62) on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m., for the second game of their three-game set with Dunedin. Right-hander Ben White (3-3, 4.22) will get the start for the Blue Jays as he makes his first career appearance against Brevard County. Brevard County Box Score Seven shutout innings from Jorge Lopez with no walks and six punchouts. Definitely something to get excited about. Orlando Arcia doubled and scored the game's only run and Cameron Garfield singled for the only other BC hit. The 'Tees turned three double plays behind Lopez. Brevard County Play-By-Play

  13. Final: Brevard County 0, Lakeland 3 'Tees shutout 3-0 by Flying Tigers Brevard and Lakeland unable to play second game of twinbill due to rain By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/9/6/76719596/cuts/Ross_5.24_640x360_2co8t46e_4v3mi1gv.jpg Brevard County Manatees starting pitcher Austin Ross suffered his first loss of the season in a 3-0 loss to the Lakeland Tigers on Thursday morning at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) LAKELAND, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees could not overcome an early deficit on Thursday morning and fell 3-0 to the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium. The Manatees (33-30) and Flying Tigers were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but game two was cancelled due to rain. In the lone game of the day, Lakeland rode to victory on the back of some early runs and a strong pitching performance by starter Yorfrank Lopez. Lakeland (41-24) struck early off of Brevard County starting pitcher Austin Ross, though the right-hander limited the damage. Ross walked Chad Wright and Jeff McVaney in the first, which led to back-to-back RBI singles by Lance Durham and Connor Harrell. Those timely hits gave the Flying Tigers a 2-0 lead. Ross (5-1, 2.79 ERA) pitched scoreless baseball in the second through fifth innings, but the home side added insurance in the sixth. With two outs and nobody on, James Robbins ripped his second double of the game. Harold Castro followed with a line drive single over shortstop Orlando Arcia to score Robbins and give Lakeland a 3-0 lead. Thanks to Lopez and closer Angel Nesbitt, those runs were all the Tigers needed. The 'Tees threatened twice, but could not score. In the second, Brevard had runners on first and second with two outs on back-to-back singles by Cameron Garfield and Victor Roache. However, Lopez induced an inning-ending groundout back to the mound to end the threat. The Manatees had perhaps their best chance to score the following inning when Alfredo Rodriguez hit a leadoff single through the right side and moved to second when Lopez's pick-off throw skipped past James Robbins at first. Again, though, Lopez calmed down and escaped trouble. He induced a fly out and struck out the final two batters of the inning to keep the 'Tees off the scoreboard. Lopez (3-3, 4.85 ERA) pitched three perfect innings and finished with six shutout frames, in total. The Lakeland righty only allowed four hits, struck out five and did not issue a walk in the winning effort. Nesbitt then finished the game off with a one-two-three seventh inning to notch his 14th save of the season. Ross took his first loss of the season in his fourth start. The right-hander finished with three runs allowed over six innings. He surrendered six hits, walked three and struck out a pair. The Manatees are off over the weekend with the start of Florida State League All-Star break. The 2014 All-Star Game will be on Saturday at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, beginning at 7:05 p.m. Five Manatees have been selected to represent the North Division: Garfield, RHP Tyler Wagner, RHP Damien Magnifico, RHP Tanner Poppe and LHP Jed Bradley. Poppe and Bradley will not be in attendance, as they are currently in Double-A with the Huntsville Stars. After the All-Star break, the 'Tees return home to start a three-game series against the Dunedin Blue Jays on Monday at 6:35 p.m. to close out the first half of the season. Brevard County Box Score Not much to talk about in this one. Only four hits, and all four were singles with one each coming from Cameron Garfield, Victor Roache, Michael Garza and Alfredo Rodriguez. Austin Ross went the whole way on the mound, allowing three runs over six innings. He gave up six hits and three walks and was charged with his first loss of the season. Brevard County Play-By-Play

  18. Final: Tampa 0, Brevard County 3 Two 'Tees All-Stars lead Brevard past Yanks Garfield goes 3-for-4 with two RBI; Wagner throws seven shutout frames By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - Cameron Garfield did a little bit of everything in the Brevard County Manatees' 3-0 win over the Tampa Yankees on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. The Manatees' catcher not only handled a terrific start by Tyler Wagner, but he also had a hand in all of three of Brevard's runs, as the 'Tees finished a two-game sweep of the Yankees. Garfield began his onslaught on the very first pitch of the bottom of the fifth inning. The game was still scoreless when Garfield wrapped an offering from Yankees' starter Dan Camarena around the left field foul pole. Garfield's second homer of the year put the 'Tees ahead, 1-0. Brevard County's backstop was not yet done with the bat. When the seventh inning rolled around, Garfield's home run was still the only run of the ballgame. He led off the inning with a hard ground ball single down the right field line and moved to second when Jose Toussen bobbled the ball. Garfield advanced to third on a ground out and stood on third base with one out. That brought Mike Garza to the plate and he hit a sharply-struck ground ball to first base. Garfield rushed home as first baseman Greg Bird fielded and threw home. The play was close, but Garfield slid around the tag of catcher Trent Garrison to give the Manatees (33-29) a 2-0 edge. Brevard's All-Star catcher added to the lead once again in the eighth inning. Garfield stepped up to the plate with two men on base and one out. This time, he ripped a double to score Tyrone Taylor. With the hit, the Manatees led 3-0 and Garfield was 3-for-4 with two RBI, as he finished a triple shy of the cycle. In his defensive duties, Garfield aided his starting pitcher through seven solid innings. Wagner (5-4, 2.09 ERA) kept the Yankees (30-34) off the scoreboard and only gave up four hits all night. He walked one and struck out four, as Tampa had only two runners in scoring position all evening against Wagner. Stephen Peterson relieved Wagner in the final two innings. After working a perfect eighth on three groundouts, the lefty ran into some trouble in the ninth. Peterson allowed a pair of singles to bring the tying run to the plate, but struck out Matt Snyder and got Cody Grice to ground to second base to end the game. In doing so, Peterson earned his first save of the season. Before the All-Star break, Brevard County will hit the road for three games against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (40-24) at Joker Marchant Stadium, beginning on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Austin Ross (5-0, 2.56) will get the start for the 'Tees against Yorfrank Lopez (2-3, 5.34). Brevard County Box Score Tyler Wagner turned in another fantastic start, going seven scoreless to lower his ERA to 2.09. Stephen Peterson's two scoreless innings of relief earned him his first save of the year. Cameron Garfield has been heating up lately and his three hits tonight have him at an even .500 (7-for-14) over his last three games. Tyrone Taylor also had a multi-hit game for the Manatees. Brevard County Play-By-Play Garfield's fifth inning homer was all the offense the 'Tees would need. Brevard County Bottom of the 5th Defensive Substitution: Jose Toussen replaces right fielder Yeicok Calderon, batting 7th, playing right field. 20. Final: Tampa 2, Brevard County 5 'Tees topple Tampa, 5-2 Johnson throws career-high 7.2 innings to earn win By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/7/0/78915170/cuts/Johnson_6.8_3_640x360_11ruq8bf_7jbdulo0.jpg Brevard County Manatees starting pitcher Hobbs Johnson threw a career high 7.2 innings and allowed two runs on six hits in a 5-2 win over the Tampa Yankees on Sunday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - Southpaw Hobbs Johnson had the longest outing of his professional career as he went 7.2 innings and helped the Brevard County Manatees to a 5-2 win over the Tampa Yankees at Space Coast Stadium on Sunday night. Johnson (6-6, 2.62 ERA) only allowed two runs on six hits. He struck out three men and walked only two, en route to his sixth win of 2014. Johnson's previous career-high in innings pitched was 6.1 frames. For the second straight start, Johnson faced the minimum 12 batters through the first four innings. The lefty did not allow the first Yankees' hit until the third, but he quickly disposed of that base runner. After Wes Wilson broke through with a one-out hit, Johnson induced a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Cody Grice to end the inning. The Yankees scored their only two runs against Johnson in the fifth and eighth. Brevard County already held a 4-0 lead when Dante Bichette, Jr. delivered a single to lead off the fifth inning. He then moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a ground out. With two outs, Jose Toussen smacked an RBI single to put Tampa on the scoreboard for the first time. Three innings later, Matt Snyder doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. With one out and the 'Tees leading 5-1, Wes Wilson hit a sharp ground ball to third base, but Brandon Macias made a terrific diving stop to his forehand side, got to his feet and threw out Wilson. Snyder scored to cut Brevard's lead to 5-2, but that was all that Tampa could manage off Manatees' pitching. Brevard County (32-29) jumped out to an early lead and it was Nathan Orf who got it all started. The first man to face Yankees' starter Conner Kendrick singled up the middle and advanced to second when Cody Grice bobbled the ball in centerfield. Two batters later, Tyrone Taylor smoked an RBI double down the left field line. His 24th two-bagger of the season gave the 'Tees a 1-0 advantage. Not long after that, Yadiel Rivera grounded a base hit through the left side of the infield to score Taylor and give Brevard County a 2-0 lead. The Manatees increased their lead to 3-0 in the second inning on a heads-up baserunning play by Macias. He stood off of first and Mike Garza led from third base with two outs. Kendrick picked off Macias, but the he worked himself into a lengthy rundown between first and second. As the Yankees (30-33) labored to tag Macias out, Garza sprinted home with Brevard's third run. Brevard lumped on a couple more runs in the fourth and fifth. Parker Berberet delivered in the fourth when his single scored Garza. The following frame, Orf doubled to left-center and Orlando Arcia singled him home to give Brevard County its fifth run of the ballgame. Kevin Shackelford took the 'Tees 5-2 lead and ran with it in the eighth and ninth. He replaced Johnson with two outs in the eighth inning, walked a man and induced an inning-ending line out to shortstop to leave the bases loaded. In the ninth, Shackelford worked a perfect frame to nail down his third save of the year. Orf was perhaps the position player of the game for Brevard County, as he finished 2-for-4, scored a pair of runs and made arguably the play of the year in left field. With two outs and nobody on in the seventh inning, Zach Wilson hit a deep fly ball to left-center that looked destined to either hit the top of the wall or clear it entirely. However, Orf darted to the fence, leaped and made the catch while crashing into the wall. Garza was the other Manatees' hitter to produce multiple hits, as the first baseman was 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs. Brevard County will go for the sweep of this mini two-game series against Tampa on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. It will be a duel of Florida State League All-Stars, as Tyler Wagner (4-4, 2.29) will take the ball for the 'Tees against Tampa lefty Dan Camarena (4-3, 2.81). 23. Final: Bradenton 5, Brevard County 4 (12 Innings) Bullpen falters in 12-inning loss Pierce throws six scoreless, Orf goes 4-for-6 in 5-4 loss to Marauders By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/1/6/78634216/cuts/Pierce_2_640x360_axebjowc_dfigqjzz.jpg Brevard County starting pitcher Chad Pierce threw six shutout innings, but did not factor in the decision as the Manatees were defeated by the Bradenton Marauders, 5-4 in 12 innings on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - After giving up just three runs in their last 29 innings of work entering the night, the Brevard County Manatees could not hold a four-run lead in a 12-inning, 5-4 loss to the Bradenton Marauders on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium in front of a crowd of 2,604. With the game deadlocked at four in the top of the 12th, Josh Bell stepped in against Manatees' reliever Mike Strong. On a 0-1 pitch, Bell smashed a fly ball to deep left field. Orf tracked it all the way back to the wall, but the ball carried into the Marauders' bullpen to give Bradenton (31-30) its first and only lead of the night, 5-4. The Marauders rally began once Manatees' starter Chad Pierce (1-2, 3.25 ERA) was lifted from the game after the sixth inning. Trailing 4-0, Jose Osuna greeted reliever Scott Lieser rudely to start the seventh. On the second pitch of the at-bat, Osuna drove one over the wall in left-center field for a solo home run - his second of the year - to cut the lead to three. Bradenton trimmed the lead further against Lieser in the eighth. With one out, Walker Gourley poked a single to center and Bell reached base on an error by second baseman Yadiel Rivera. On the seventh pitch of the at-bat, Jordan Steranka slapped a single to center to score Gourley to trim the Brevard County (31-29) lead to 4-2. That was the final pitch Lieser would throw as Mark Williams came out of the bullpen to try and stop the bleeding. With runners at the corners, Osuna lifted a sacrifice fly to left to cut the lead down to one. Williams ended the rally there as he struck out Max Moroff swinging to end the threat. With the score 4-3 going to the ninth, the Marauders tied the game thanks to a Brevard defensive miscue. Leading off the frame, Jeff Roy hit a chopper to Orlando Arcia. The shortstop, who had already committed a throwing error earlier in the night, made another errant throw to first which allowed Roy to go to second. Roy advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jacob Stallings. With the infield drawn in to cut off the run, Raul Fortunato grounded a ball just past the outstretched glove of Arcia into left field. Roy scampered home easily to score and tie the game up, 4-4. The Marauders had a chance to grab the lead in the 11th, but could not do so. With two outs, Fortunato ended up at second base on a wild throw from third baseman Nicky Delmonico. The next batter, Adam Frazier squirted a ball back up the box into center field. Fortunato motored around third to try and score the go-ahead run, but was gunned down at the plate on an excellent throw by center fielder Tyrone Taylor. Brevard County grabbed the initial lead in the bottom of the first against Bradenton starter Jason Creasy (3-2, 3.50). Nathan Orf led off the frame with a single back up the box and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Arcia. Taylor followed with a lazy fly ball to left field, but Fortunato could not make the catch to put runners on the corners. Michael Reed, who was recently activated from the disabled list, responded with the big base knock. Reed lined a double down the right field line to score both Orf and Taylor to give Brevard the lead, 2-0. Two batters later, Cameron Garfield drilled a single to center to score Reed to push the advantage to three. The Manatees added their final run with Garfield at the plate in the sixth. After a Delmonico double, Garfield hit a hard grounder to short. Frazier tried making a backhanded stop, but the ball ricocheted off the shortstop's leg and into left field. That allowed Delmonico, who initially slid feet first into third base, to score and give Brevard a 4-0 lead. The extra-inning contest resulted in both starters being saddled with no-decisions. Despite some early troubles, Creasy allowed four runs - one earned - on eight hits in seven innings of work. He did not walk a batter and struck out three. The extra-inning loss cost Pierce, who was fantastic in a spot start, his second victory of the year. The former Wisconsin-Milwaukee star did not allow a run and surrendered just two hits over six innings. He walked three and struck out two. Pierce has allowed just five hits in 10.1 shutout innings in his two starts this season. The loss also spoiled a fantastic night for Orf. The Manatees' left fielder tied both a season and career-high by recording four hits and he also scored a run. Orf is now 8-for-13 in the series, all with his mother and other family members in attendance. Delmonico and Garfield also had two hits each.
