  1. Final: Fort Myers 4, Brevard County 3 Ninth inning rally falls short in 4-3 loss to Miracle Manatees drop third straight game to Fort Myers By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/0/0/75469900/cuts/Taylor_4.14_640x360_Kasey_Femmel_cqj6yhit_3njyodgw.jpg Brevard County center fielder Tyrone Taylor, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI in a 4-3 loss to the Fort Myers Miracle on Wednesday afternoon at Space Coast Stadium. Taylor leads all of Minor League Baseball with 19 doubles. (Kasey Femmel/EFSC) VIERA, Fla. - Trailing by two runs, the Brevard County Manatees loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth inning, but could not complete the rally, as they fell 4-3 to the Fort Myers Miracle on Wednesday afternoon at Space Coast Stadium. Miracle reliever Tyler Jones walked Garrett Cooper and Parker Berberet to start the inning. Brandon Macias followed by laying a perfect bunt down the third base line for a single to load the bases. Jones then buckled down as he retired Nathan Orf on a fly out to center. Orlando Arcia would hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Cooper and to bring Tyrone Taylor to the plate with two outs. The center fielder hit a ball hard to third, but Niko Goodrum was able to make the play and throw on to second for the force out to end the game. Fort Myers (23-16) got all the runs they needed when they put together a four-run first inning. After retiring the leadoff batter, Manatees' starter Jed Bradley (4-2, 3.20 ERA) struggled with his control. The southpaw surrendered a single to Goodrum, followed by a walk to Jorge Polanco. After Polanco was caught stealing second on a double steal, Bradley let Dalton Hicks reach on a walk before hitting Travis Harrison with a pitch to load the bases. Adam Brett Walker stepped up to the plate and proceeded to hit a high fly ball to right. Orf tracked it all the way to the wall before making a leaping attempt to try and keep the ball from going over the wall. However, the right fielder's attempt came up empty as Walker's grand slam put Fort Myers in front, 4-0. Bradley would settle down after that opening frame as he did not allow another run or walk over his final five innings of work. The reigning Florida State League Pitcher of the Week scattered nine hits and struck out a season-low two hitters. Brevard (20-18) would rally to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first. Miracle starter David Hurlbut (3-1, 1.62) allowed back-to-back singles to Orf and Arcia to begin the inning, bringing Taylor the plate. With runners on the corners, Taylor hit a ground ball to third, but an errant throw by Goodrum allowed the Manatees to get on the board. Cameron Garfield would follow with a sacrifice fly to cut Fort Myers' advantage to 4-2, but that is all Brevard County would be able push across. Much like Bradley, Hurlbut would not allow another run for the remainder of his outing. The left-hander allowed eight hits, walked one and struck out two. Despite going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, the Manatees were led offensively by Taylor and Alfredo Rodriguez, who each had two-hit games. Taylor picked up his Minor League Baseball-leading 19th double and his team-leading 22nd RBI. Tom Gorzelanny, who just joined the Manatees on a Major League rehab assignment from Milwaukee, threw two scoreless innings in relief of Bradley. He allowed one hit and one walk, while striking out one. The Manatees will look to avoid the sweep when they take on the Miracle in the final game of the four-game series on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. Brevard County will turn to right-hander Jorge Lopez (4-2, 4.11) who is looking for his fourth consecutive victory. Fort Myers will counter with right-hander Alex Wimmers (2-2, 4.00). Brevard County Box Score Not Jed Bradley's best start of the year. Nine hits, two walks and four runs in six innings. Tom Gorzelanny made a rehab appearance pitching two scoreless innings of relief. Tyrone Taylor continued to be a bright spot offensively, going 2-for-4 with a walk and yet another double. Alfredo Rodriguez also had a two hit game. Brevard County Play-By-Play BC gave up four in the first but cut the Fort Myers lead in half in the bottom of the inning. 2. Final: Fort Myers 6, Brevard County 0 Brevard doomed again by mistakes in 6-0 loss 'Tees commit four errors, issue six walks, do not record extra-base hit By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/6/4/75388364/cuts/Magnifico_5.13_1_640x360_7ilhlgya_m8heb8mx.jpg Brevard County starting pitcher Damien Magnifico went 5.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits and six walks, as the Manatees were shutout 6-0 by the Fort Myers Miracle on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - A second straight night of defensive futility by the Brevard County Manatees, plus a terrific start by Fort Myers Miracle right-handed pitcher Jose Berrios led to the 'Tees being shutout 6-0 on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium. The Manatees (20-17) committed four errors for the second game in a row and did not record an extra-base hit in the loss to the Miracle (22-16). Berrios (2-2, 2.72 ERA) was particularly impressive in a season-high 6.1 innings. Fort Myers' starter held the 'Tees hitless until Victor Roache broke up Berrios' no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the fifth. Berrios only surrendered four hits, walked one and hit a batter in his scoreless performance. The 19-year-old right-hander recorded his highest strikeout total of the year, as he fanned eight, including four in a row between the second and third innings. Of his eight strikeouts, five were of the looking variety. Brevard County had its best opportunity to cross home in the fifth inning. Two batters after Roache singled, Yadiel Rivera slapped a base hit to right field and Nathan Orf walked to load the bases. Berrios ended the threat by inducing a ground out to second base to end the inning and keep the 'Tees off the scoreboard. While Berrios was strong on the mound, the Miracle's offense was advantageous. They capitalized on four defensive miscues and six walks by Brevard County pitching to score their six runs. In the second, Mike Gonzales worked a leadoff walk against Manatees' starter Damien Magnifico (2-3, 2.90). Travis Harrison then doubled to put runners on second and third andTyler Grimes ripped a one-out single to left that brought Gonzales home with the game's first run. The Miracle took advantage of another leadoff walk and an error in the third inning. John Murphy worked a base on balls to start the frame. Shortly thereafter, Murphy caught himself between first and second on a pitch in the dirt. A rundown ensued and shortstop Orlando Arcia accidentally threw the ball off Murphy's helmet. The ball ricocheted down the right field line and Murphy advanced to third. With two outs in the inning, Jorge Polanco produced an RBI single to put his team ahead, 2-0. Fort Myers did not score again until the sixth inning, but when the road team did strike again, it was because of more walks. Polanco worked a leadoff walk and after a diving grab by Arcia for the first out; Harrison and Adam Brett Walker worked back-to-back four-pitch walks to load the bases. The third walk of the inning was the end of Magnifico's night and Austin Ross came in to relieve. Ross got Grimes to fly out to right field, but Polanco scored on the sacrifice. The reliever induced another fly out to end the frame, but the Miracle led, 3-0. Magnifico ended up taking the loss for Brevard County. He allowed three runs - two earned - on five hits. The big killer for Magnifico was in the walk column, as he issued six bases on balls. Magnifico also struck out three men. The seventh inning was likely the toughest for the Manatees to stomach. Fort Myers struck for three runs in the inning to take a 6-0 lead and the Miracle did it on four hits and a pair of Brevard errors. Murphy began the inning with a double and Aderling Mejia followed with a single up the middle to put runners on the corners. 3B Niko Goodrum came up next and singled to right field to score Murphy and move Mejia to third, but an errant throw to the infield by right fielder Brandon Macias allowed Goodrum to advance to second. With the Miracle now leading 4-0, Polanco stepped up and hit a soft line drive to center field. Tyrone Taylor misplayed and dropped the ball, which allowed Mejia to cross the plate with the fifth run. Polanco was credited with a sacrifice fly and an RBI, but he advanced to second on the two-base error and Goodrum moved up to third base. At this point, the Manatees caught a slight break on a Miracle baserunning mistake. With runners on second and third, Gonzales hit a roller toward third. Ross bounced off the mound, fielded the ball and threw Gonzales out at first. Goodrum stayed put at third on the play, but Polanco ran toward third, as well. Goodrum was forced to run home and was thrown out in a rundown for a lengthy and unconventional double play. Polanco scored shortly thereafter on a double by Harrison to round out the Miracle's six-run ballgame. The Manatees also suffered a tough injury to a key outfielder in the fourth inning. Right fielder Michael Reed tried to check his swing on a 1-1 pitch from Berrios, but dropped his bat and held the right side of his torso. Reed exited the game and Macias came in for the rest of the game to bat in his spot and play right field. Fort Myers has taken the first two games of this four-game series from the Manatees, but the two sides meet again on Wednesday morning for a 10:35 a.m. start at Space Coast Stadium. Reigning Florida State League Pitcher of the Week Jed Bradley (4-1, 2.77) will take the ball for Brevard County. The left-hander - who has now won the league's weekly award twice this season - will be opposed by Fort Myers southpaw David Hurlbut (2-1, 1.69). Brevard County Box Score The Manatees managed only six hits and none went for extra bases. Nicky Delmonico continued his hot start going 2-for-4. The other four hits came from Brandon Macias, Mike Garza, Yadiel Rivera and Victor Roache. Damien Magnifico struggled with his control, walking six batters. He also committed one of four errors for BC. Macias, Orlando Arcia and Tyrone Taylor had the others. Brevard County Play-By-Play
  3. Final: Fort Myers 8, Brevard County 2 Miscues malign Manatees in loss to Miracle Brevard commits four errors, strand nine in 8-2 loss By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - A slew of errors and stranded opportunities sank the Brevard County Manatees in an 8-2 loss to the Fort Myers Miracle on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. The loss snapped Brevard County's four-game winning streak. Fort Myers capitalized on Brevard's miscues early. The Miracle put a pair of runs on the board in the second inning after a leadoff error by third baseman Nicky Delmonico allowed Travis Harrison to reach. Manatees starting pitcher Tyler Wagner (3-2, 1.80 ERA) struck out the next two men, but walked Stuart Turner and then gave up back-to-back RBI singles. John Murphy delivered first with a single to left to score Harrison. Aderling Mejia then chopped a single up the middle that shortstop Orlando Arcia could not handle. The infield single scored Turner to give Fort Myers an early 2-0 lead. Wagner kept the Miracle off the scoreboard for the rest of his outing, but Fort Myers pulled away in the sixth. The Miracle struck for four runs off Manatees left-handed reliever Mike Strong to take a 6-0 advantage. Strong walked the first two men he faced before LF Tyler Grimes stroked a fly ball to right field. Right fielder Michael Reed could not make the catch, as the ball twisted away from him and landed on the track for a double. Harrison scored from second on the two-bagger and an error by second baseman Yadiel Rivera on the relay throw allowed Adam Brett Walker to score, as well. Stuart Turner then launched a two-run home run to the opposite field in right to complete the four-run frame. Fort Myers (21-16) tacked on two more runs on a homer in the eighth. After Murphy hit a one-out double, Mejia skied an offering from Chad Pierce over the right field wall, to expand the Miracle's lead to 8-0. Brevard County (20-16) struggled with runners in scoring position all night. The 'Tees put runners on first and second with one out in the fourth, but Miracle starting pitcher Matt Tomshaw (2-1, 2.31) got out of the jam with a strikeout and a line out to right field. Tomshaw worked out of trouble again in the sixth. Brevard loaded the bases against the southpaw with just one out, but could not produce a run. With one out, Tomshaw jammed Reed and induced a soft ground ball back to the mound. Tomshaw delivered a glove flip to the plate to cut down a run. The lefty then induced an inning-ending force out at second to get out of the jam. Tomshaw earned the win with six scoreless innings, as he allowed five hits, walked a pair and struck out two. The Manatees' only runs of the game crossed the plate after Tomshaw was finished. Nathan Orf led off the eighth inning with a single and two batters later, Tyrone Taylor hit a bomb over the bullpen in left field for his fourth homer of the season. The Manatees loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but again could not scratch across a run. Brian Gilbert got out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts to end the game. Arcia, Taylor, Delmonico and Rivera all had two hits each but as a team, the Manatees went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. Brevard County and Fort Myers meet again on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. Right-hander Damien Magnifico (2-2, 2.83) is slated to pitch for the Manatees against Miracle righty Jose Berrios (2-2, 3.30). Brevard County Box Score Tyler Wagner's only runs were unearned and he lowered his season ERA to 1.80. Mike Strong had his first real rough outing of the season. Tyrone Taylor was on base three more times tonight with a single, walk and home run. Orlando Arcia singled and doubled as did Nicky Delmonico. Yadiel Rivera also had a multi-hit game, singling twice. Brevard County Play-By-Play The Manatees only runs of the game came on Tyrone Taylor's 8th inning home run. Brevard County Bottom of the 8th Nathan Orf singles on a ground ball to second baseman Aderlin Mejia. Orlando Arcia strikes out swinging. Tyrone Taylor homers (4) on a fly ball to left field. Nathan Orf scores. Michael Reed strikes out swinging. Cameron Garfield flies out to left fielder Tyler Grimes.
  4. Final: Brevard County 5, Daytona 2 Brevard completes sweep of Daytona with 5-2 win Johnson fans career-high nine, Delmonico homers in first game of season By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees wrapped up a four-game sweep of the Daytona Cubs with a 5-2 victory at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Saturday night. Manatees' lefty Hobbs Johnson (3-4, 2.84 ERA) led the charge with career-highs in both strikeouts and innings pitched. The starter fanned nine men and reached the seventh inning for the first time this season before being removed with one out in the frame. Johnson's crowning moment of the contest came between the fourth and sixth innings. Brevard's starter struck out six out of the seven batters he faced between the final out of the fourth and the end of the sixth. Johnson struck out the side in the sixth to conclude his hot stretch. In addition to all of the strikeouts, Johnson kept the Cubs off the basepaths throughout his start. He did not walk a batter for the third time this season. The southpaw also allowed just two runs - one earned - on five hits. Daytona scored both of their runs in Johnson's last inning of work. With the Manatees (20-15) leading 4-0, Albert Almora hit a chopper to third base for an infield single. Bijan Rademacher came up next and roped a double to put the Cubs (10-23) on the board. Johnson was lifted after recording the first out of the inning and Martin Viramontes came in to pitch. Viramontes nearly got out of the inning, but a two-out ground ball hopped up on shortstop Yadiel Rivera and bounced into center field to score Rademacher. Both runs on the inning were charged to Johnson, but that was all Brevard would allow in the ballgame. For the second game in a row, the majority of the Manatees' runs were scored in the third inning. Orlando Arcia started the inning with a one-out single to keep his season-best 10-game hit streak alive. Arcia stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Then with two outs, Michael Reed hit a ground ball to second base that should have gotten Daytona out of the inning. However, Gioskar Amaya booted the ball and Arcia scored the first run of the game. Arcia's run was not the only casualty of the Amaya error for the Cubs. Cameron Garfield came up with Reed on first and drove a deep fly ball over the scoreboard in left field. The catcher's first home run of the season put Brevard ahead, 3-0 and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Saturday also marked the return of Nicky Delmonico and the left-handed hitter made his presence known quickly. In just his second at-bat of the season, Delmonico hit a long home run over the right field wall to lead off the fourth inning. Delmonico also singled two innings prior in his first time up and finished 2-for-4. Garfield and Delmonico were not the only Manatees to go deep against Daytona pitching. Rivera punctuated Brevard County's sweep of the Cubs with a two-out solo shot in the eighth. The long ball was Rivera's third of the season and the ninth for the Manatees in the month of May, which already matches the team's total from the entire month of April. After the Rivera home run gave the Manatees a 5-2 edge, Viramontes went back on the hill to work the bottom of the eighth. The right-hander walked one and kept the Cubs off the scoreboard. Viramontes held Daytona scoreless over 1.2 innings and struck out three men before the 'Tees turned to Tanner Poppe in the ninth. Poppe allowed a two-out single, but nothing more. He shutout the Cubs in the ninth to earn his eighth save of the season. Brevard County's closer now sits second in the Florida State League in that category behind Dunedin's Arik Sikula (10). The Manatees will enjoy a day off on Mothers' Day, but return to action on Monday night at 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. Interdivision action begins in the FSL, as Brevard County hosts the Fort Myers Miracle (20-16) for a four-game set. Tyler Wagner (3-1, 2.03) is slated to start for the 'Tees against Miracle lefty Matt Tomshaw (1-1, 3.12). Brevard County Box Score Welcome back Nicky Delmonico! 2-for-4 with a home run in his first game back. Cameron Garfield homered and walked in four plate appearances. Yadiel Rivera also homered and singled in four at bats. Nathan Orf went 2-for-5 with a double out of the leadoff spot. Michael Reed singled, walked twice and stole two bases. Hobbs Johnson made another nice start for the 'Tees, going 6.1 innings and striking out nine. He allowed two runs, though only one was earned. Brevard County Play-By-Play Four of Brevard's five runs came via the longball Brevard County Top of the 3rd Nathan Orf pops out to second baseman Gioskar Amaya. 5. Final: Daytona 2, Brevard County 5 Lopez solid as 'Tees top Cubs, 5-2 By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/3/8/74946238/cuts/Lopez_5.9_1_640x360_ikyyb8wx_q4pi4mom.jpg Brevard County starting pitcher Jorge Lopez allowed two unearned runs and struck out five over seven innings of work as the Manatees defeated the Daytona Cubs, 5-3 on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - Thanks in large part to a stellar, seven-inning performance from Jorge Lopez, the Brevard County Manatees won their third straight game against the Daytona Cubs, with a 5-2 victory on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium. Brevard County's starter turned in his longest and most effective performance of the season. Lopez did not allow a hit until the third inning and did not surrender another one until the sixth. Both times, Lopez (4-2, 4.11 ERA) induced double plays to erase the base runners. Lopez's only two runs allowed were unearned after errors in the third and fifth. Daytona scored the game's first run after Lopez threw a would-be double play ball into center field. Brevard County (19-15) turned a double play right after the error, but Rock Shoulders scored on the play to put Daytona (10-22) on top, 1-0. The Manatees' offense avenged Lopez with five runs in the bottom half of the third. After Brandon Macias reached on an error, Nathan Orf ripped a triple to right-center field to tie the game. Orlando Arcia came up next and singled home Orf with the go-ahead run. Arcia made a big baserunning play to keep the rally alive in the third. Tyrone Taylor hit a ground ball to second base, but the Cubs could not turn a double play because Arcia slid in hard at second. Taylor was safe at first and scored two batters later when Cameron Garfield smacked a two-bagger down the left field line. Victor Roache and Garrett Cooper also contributed to the Manatees' rally. Roache expanded the lead with a run-scoring single and later scored himself, when Cooper delivered a double to give the 'Tees a 5-1 lead. Lopez took the run support and ran with it. He only gave up one more run when the 'Tees committed three errors in the fifth. Jeimer Candelario reached second base to lead off the inning when Cooper had trouble fielding a ground ball and threw away his throw to Lopez, who was covering the bag. Candelario scored later in the inning when Cooper fielded a two-out grounder off the bat of Marco Hernandez, but Lopez dropped the first baseman's flip. The Manatees overcame their defensive miscues and closed out the win. Lopez finished with five strikeouts and three walks, as he won his third straight start. Mike Strong earned his second save with two scoreless innings in relief. Strong walked two, allowed a pair of hits and struck out three. Brevard County will go for the four-game series sweep of the Cubs on Saturday night in Daytona Beach with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. The Manatees will hand the ball to southpaw Hobbs Johnson (2-4, 3.13), while the Cubs will send righty Jose Rosario (2-2, 3.81) to the hill. Brevard County Box Score This was a nice start for Jorge Lopez, probably his best of the season. Seven innings and only two unearned runs on two hits. Mike Strong has been lights out so far this season and has to be in line for a promotion when a spot opens up in Huntsville. Only one run allowed all season. Makes it all the more puzzling when they sign a guy like Tim Dillard. Cameron Garfield is hitting .421 over his last ten games and has the average all the way up to .288. He went 2-for-4 with a double tonight. Garrett Cooper doubled and walked twice while Nathan Orf tripled and was hit by a pitch. Brevard County Play-By-Play Brevard County Bottom of the 3rd Brandon Macias reaches on a missed catch error by first baseman Rock Shoulders, assist to shortstop Marco Hernandez. With Nathan Orf batting, Brandon Macias steals (2) 2nd base. Nathan Orf triples (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Albert Almora. Brandon Macias scores. Orlando Arcia singles on a ground ball to center fielder Albert Almora. Nathan Orf scores. Tyrone Taylor grounds into a force out, second baseman Gioskar Amaya to shortstop Marco Hernandez. Orlando Arcia out at 2nd. Tyrone Taylor to 1st. Michael Reed flies out to right fielder Bijan Rademacher. Cameron Garfield doubles (9) on a fly ball to left fielder Zeke DeVoss. Tyrone Taylor scores. Victor Roache singles on a fly ball to left fielder Zeke DeVoss. Cameron Garfield scores. Garrett Cooper doubles (3) on a fly ball to left fielder Zeke DeVoss. Victor Roache scores. Yadiel Rivera strikes out swinging.
  6. Final: Daytona 0, Brevard County 7 Manatees blank Cubs, 7-0 Bradley fans seven to earn fourth win By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - Jed Bradley's last few starts have been stellar, but his performance on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium may have been his best of the season, as he pitched 6.2 innings of two-hit baseball to lift the Brevard County Manatees to a 7-0 win over the Daytona Cubs. The Manatees' southpaw looked good from the start. He retired the first two batters of the game on groundouts and would have recorded a perfect first inning if not for an error. Unfazed by the fielding miscue, Bradley (4-1, 2.77 ERA) picked Albert Almora off of first to end the inning. Things only got better for Bradley as he worked one-two-three frames in the second, fourth and sixth innings. Only three men reached scoring position against the left-hander all night. Bradley only got into serious trouble at the end of his outing. He retired the first two men he faced in the seventh, but then walked Dan Vogelbach. Jeimer Candelario was up next and he hit a tapper down the third base line. Bradley fielded the ball cleanly, but threw low to first and the ball skipped past first baseman Mike Garza for an error on Bradley. That errant throw put an end to Bradley's night, but Greg Holle struck out Tim Saunders to end the inning. Bradley picked up his team-leading fourth win of the season, as he struck out seven and walked a pair in a two-hit, scoreless performance. Bradley had been hurting for run support in his previous starts, but that was not the case on Thursday. Brevard (18-15) broke out for four runs in the fourth inning. Nathan Orf was hit by a pitch for a league-leading eighth time to start the rally. He then proceeded to steal second and advanced to third base when Saunders could not catch the throw from catcher Chadd Krist. Then, Orlando Arcia almost gave Brevard County the lead as he scorched a line drive, but it was right at Candelario. However with one out, Tyrone Taylor did what he has done all season. He drilled his 17th double of the year down the left field line to score Orf with the game's first run. Michael Reed kept the rally going with a walk and Cameron Garfield hit his second double in as many days to score Taylor and put the 'Tees up, 2-0. Brevard scored two more in the inning on an RBI groundout by Victor Roache and a single by Brandon Macias. The home side kept the offense coming in the seventh. Brevard County loaded the bases on singles by Macias, Yadiel Rivera and Garza. Orf grounded into a double play, but that still brought Macias home. Arcia followed the double play with an RBI single to give Brevard County a 6-0 advantage. Taylor narrowly missed adding to Brevard's lead later in the inning, but he did add to his doubles total. He ripped a ground ball to third that took a bad hop past Candelario and went into left field. Arcia tried to score, but was thrown out at the plate on a relay throw that went from Saunders to Candelario to Krist. Though Taylor did not gain a RBI, he was rewarded with his 18th double of the season, which is still tops in all of Minor League Baseball. After Taylor's double, Roache expanded the Manatees' edge. In the eighth inning, Roache went deep over the right field wall to give Brevard County its final insurance run. Holle and Stephen Peterson finished the ballgame for Brevard. Holle pitched a perfect eighth inning after finishing the seventh. Peterson walked one in the ninth, but would shut the door on the Cubs (10-21) to nail down the Manatees win. With the win, Brevard County has tied the I-95 Rivalry at five games apiece, at the halfway point of the 20-game season series. The Manatees and Cubs face off again on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. Jorge Lopez (3-2, 5.14) will take the hill for the Manatees against Daytona's Felix Pena (1-3, 1.29). Final: Brevard County 5, Daytona 1 Brevard bounces Daytona, 5-1 Magnifico K's six in six frames, 'Tees tally 14 hits By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/6/8/74750168/cuts/Magnifico_4.15_640x360_p5q423wp_je18zdto.jpg Manatees starting pitcher Damien Magnifico allowed one run and struck out six in six innings as Brevard County defeated the Daytona Cubs, 5-1 on Wednesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Damien Magnifico had his best start of the season thus far in the Brevard County Manatees' 5-1 win over the Daytona Cubs on Wednesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Magnifico (2-2, 2.83 ERA) pitched six innings and only faltered once. The right-hander allowed a run in the first inning on an RBI double by Bijan Rademacher, but rebounded to throw five straight scoreless frames. He walked one, struck out six and gave up six hits in the winning effort. Brevard (17-15) also helped Magnifico with early run support. Nathan Orf and CF Tyrone Taylor put the 'Tees on top early. Orf led off the game with a ground rule double to left-center field and Taylor singled him home for the game's first run. Rademacher tied the score in the bottom of the inning, but Orf and Taylor struck back in the third to pull Brevard back ahead. Orf hit his second ground rule double of the game and Taylor ripped a double down the left field line. The Manatees then took a 2-1 lead on Taylor's Minor League-leading 16th double of the season. They added another run later in the inning when Michael Reed singled to score Taylor. The fifth inning brought another Manatees' insurance run, but it also included a scary moment for Daytona (10-20) starting pitcher Rob Zastryzny. With Orlando Arcia on first and one out, Reed hit a hard line drive back at Zastryzny, who turned and took the liner off his left arm. Zastryzny turned and took the liner off his left arm. He made the play to throw out Reed, but exited the game immediately after. Daytona called on Stephen Perakslis to replace Zastryzny on the hill to face Cameron Garfield with two outs and Arcia on second. Garfield roped an RBI double that scored Arcia and gave Brevard County a 4-1 lead. Austin Ross took over for Magnifico in the seventh and cruised with the three-run cushion. The reliever pitched a pair of scoreless frames. He allowed one hit, walked two and struck out three. The Manatees added another insurance run in the top of the ninth before Tanner Poppe took the hill to close out the win. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Arcia hit a single up the middle to score Yadiel Rivera. Poppe took the ball with the 5-1 lead and worked a perfect bottom of the ninth to secure the victory. Offensively, Brevard County racked up 14 hits with five of them being doubles. Mike Garza went 3-for-4 out of the number nine spot of the line-up, while Orf, Taylor, Garfield and Brandon Macias all added two hits each. The I-95 Rivalry resumes on Thursday night when the Cubs come to Space Coast Stadium with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. Lefty Jed Bradley (3-1, 3.34) is expected to start for Brevard County against Daytona's Ben Wells (1-2, 4.35). Brevard County Box Score It's been a pretty good start to the season for Damien Magnifico so far, but the strikeouts haven't been there until tonight when he K'd six batters in six innings, which was a season high for Magnifico. The Manatees knocked out 14 hits with everyone in the lineup but Victor Roache picking up at least one hit. Mike Garza went 3-for-4. Cameron Garfield and Nathan Orf each had two doubles. Tyrone Taylor singled and doubled and Brandon Macias also had a multi-hit game. Brevard County Play-By-Play Doubles by Orf, Taylor and Garfield led to a pair of runs. 8. Final: Clearwater 4, Brevard County 2 Late rally falls short in 4-2 loss to Threshers By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable complete the comeback as they fell to the Clearwater Threshers, 4-2 at Space Coast Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. After Orlando Arcia and Tyrone Taylor were retired to start the frame, Michael Reed drew a walk to start the rally. Victor Roache would single to bring Garrett Cooper, who represented the tying run, to the plate. Cooper lined a single to left to score Reed and pull the Manatees (16-15) within two runs. With Alfredo Rodriguez coming to the plate, Threshers manager Nelson Prada decided to call upon right-handed reliever Colton Murray, who picked up his first save of the year a night ago. Rodriguez smoked a line drive on the first pitch he saw, but it was right at Brian Pointer who made the play in right field to end the game. The game was closely contested throughout as the Manatees' Tyler Wagner (3-1, 2.03 ERA) and the Threshers' Colin Kleven were both stellar in their respective starts. Wagner surrendered just two runs on six hits and one walk, over a season-high seven innings. Kleven countered Wagner every step of the way to put together his best start of 2014, as he allowed one run on six hits and struck out two without walking a batter. The Threshers (7-22) grabbed the first lead of the game in the top of the second. Art Charles started the inning with a double to right center and advanced to third on a single by Gabriel Lino. With one out, Pointer hit a fly ball to left field. Lino was gunned out by Roache trying to tag up to second for the final out of the inning. However, Charles was able to race home from third before the runner was tagged out, giving Clearwater a 1-0 lead. The Manatees came back to tie it up in the sixth inning. Back-to-back singles by Nathan Orf and Arcia put runners on the corners for Taylor. The center fielder hit a tailor-made, double play ball to short, but was able to beat the relay throw to first. Orf came home to score and tie the game at one. Clearwater grabbed the lead for good a half inning later. With Lino at third and two outs, Anthony Phillips snuck a ground ball into center field, which scored the runner from third base to make it 2-1. The Threshers padded their lead in the ninth. After Chad Carman reached on an error, Pointer lined a ball off the bottom of the foul pole in right field and back into play. Home plate umpire Rich Gunton did not hesitate as he raced down the first base line to signal a home run. Brevard County manager Joe Ayrault came out to dispute the call, seeing as it might have bounced off the top of the wall, but to no avail as the two-run shot extended the Threshers lead to 4-1. The Manatees will look to get back on track against their I-95 rivals, the Daytona Cubs (10-19), on Wednesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Damien Magnifico (1-2, 3.10) will get the start for Brevard County against Cubs left-hander Rob Zastryzny (1-2, 8.46). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Michael Reed continues to get on base, going 2-for-3 and drawing a walk. Nathan Orf also had a pair of hits. Orf may be a little old for the Florida State League, but he's done a nice job in the leadoff spot, putting up an on base percentage of .450. Victor Roach went 1-for-4 but hit the ball hard. His double play in the fourth was a line drive rocket and he just missed a home run in the seventh. Garrett Cooper, Tyrone Taylor and Orlando Arcia had the other BC hits. Tyler Wagner pitched well again, giving up only two runs over seven innings. Brevard County Play-By-Play The Manatees put the tying run on base in the ninth but couldn't convert. Brevard County Bottom of the 9th Orlando Arcia pops out to shortstop Angelo Mora. Tyrone Taylor flies out to right fielder Brian Pointer. Michael Reed walks. Final: Clearwater 5, Brevard County 3 Manatees squander chances in 5-3 loss to Clearwater By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/2/8/74462328/cuts/Johnson_5.5_2_640x360_6k7bk3sw_1cga2kxm.jpg Brevard County starting pitcher Hobbs Johnson went just 4.2 innings and allowed seven hits, while walking one and striking out five, in the Manatees' 5-3 loss to the Clearwater Threshers on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - Harold Martinez was a thorn in the side of the Brevard County Manatees on Monday night, as the Clearwater Threshers' third baseman drove home three runs, including the go-ahead single in the fifth inning, as the Manatees fell 5-3 to the Threshers. The 'Tees and Threshers were tied 2-2 going into the fifth, but Clearwater pieced together a quick rally. Pete Lavin hit a one-out double and Martinez delivered with a single to left field to put the Threshers on top. Gabriel Lino came through later in the inning with an RBI knock to score Martinez and give Clearwater a 4-2 advantage. Those four runs came off of Brevard's Hobbs Johnson (2-4, 3.13 ERA), who went just 4.2 innings and allowed seven hits, while walking one and striking out five. Clearwater (6-22) added another run in the sixth, as well. Nick Ferdinand tripled to begin the frame and Anthony Phillips drove him in with an RBI single. Brevard County (16-14) let its best chances slip away early. The 'Tees were gifted six walks by Clearwater's starter Ethan Stewart (2-2, 3.23 ERA). Out of those walks, however Brevard only tallied three runs as the 'Tees also left 11 men on base in the loss. A leadoff walk in the first inning helped the Manatees get on the board. Already trailing 2-0, Nathan Orf worked a free pass and went from first to third when Orlando Arcia singled. Tyrone Taylor came up next and grounded out to third base, but Orf scored the Manatees' first run. Brevard scored again in the third inning after Taylor drew a one-out walk. Taylor moved up to third with two outs on a single by Cameron Garfield and scored when a ground ball by Victor Roache was misplayed by Martinez at third. The Manatees' final run came in the fifth inning after Taylor led off the inning with his Minor League Baseball-leading 15th double of the year. After Roache worked a two-out walk, Garrett Cooper produced an RBI single. Cooper's single pulled the Manatees within one run at 4-3, but that was all they could manage. Jordan Guth and Colton Murray closed out the win for Clearwater with four scoreless innings. Guth worked three innings, struck out one and only allowed one hit. Murray entered the game in the ninth and got into some troubl, but was able to escape. Orf began the inning with a walk, but was erased when Arcia hit into a fielder's choice that Clearwater could not turn into a double play. With Arcia on first, Taylor singled to put the tying runner on base with men on first and second. Murray dug deep and struck out Roache, but Arcia and Taylor pulled off a double steal. At this point, the tying run was in scoring position with two outs, but Murray got Garfield to fly out to right field to end the game. The Manatees and Threshers meet bright and early on Tuesday for a 10:35 a.m. start at Space Coast Stadium to close out their three-game series. Brevard County's Tyler Wagner (3-0, 1.91) is due to start against Clearwater's Colin Kleven (0-3, 7.58). Brevard County Box Score Tyrone Taylor had a nice night, going 2-for-4 with another double and a walk. Orlando Arcia and Garrett Cooper each had two hits as well. Cameron Garfield had the only other BC hit. Cooper, Arcia and Taylor all stole a base and Victor Roache added an outfield assist. Brevard County Play-By-Play Brevard had a shot in the ninth but it wasn't to be. Brevard County Bottom of the 9th Pitching Change: Colton Murray replaces Jordan Guth. Nathan Orf walks. Orlando Arcia grounds into a force out, first baseman Art Charles to shortstop Angelo Mora. Nathan Orf out at 2nd. Orlando Arcia to 1st. Tyrone Taylor singles on a line drive to left fielder Anthony Phillips. Orlando Arcia to 2nd. Michael Reed strikes out swinging. With Cameron Garfield batting, Orlando Arcia steals (5) 3rd base. Tyrone Taylor steals (4) 2nd base. Cameron Garfield flies out to right fielder Nick Ferdinand.
  10. Final: Clearwater 5, Brevard County 11 Roache goes deep thrice in 11-5 win over Threshers By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - Victor Roache delivered a massive power surge for the Brevard County Manatees with three home runs in his first three at-bats, en route to an 11-5 win over the Clearwater Threshers on Sunday evening at Space Coast Stadium. Roache became the first player in franchise history to hit three homers in a single game. Roache launched his first homer as the leadoff batter of the second inning. He drilled an offering from Clearwater starting pitcher Miguel Nunez over the tall wall in right-center field, just to the right of the center field batter's eye. His second long ball came in the fourth inning. This time, the power hitter deposited a long fly ball over the left field wall and onto the berm deck. Brevard's left fielder stepped up to the plate for the third time with Cameron Garfield on second base in the fifth inning. Roache's third at-bat produced the same result as the first two. He lifted a ball well over the left-center field fence, past the flagpoles for his third home run of the game. Roache finished the game 3-for-3 with four RBI and a walk. He did have a chance to add to his home run total in the seventh inning. Brevard (16-13) had runners on second and third with just one out and Roache worked himself into a 3-0 count, but the Threshers (5-22) decided to stay as far away from Roache's bat as possible. They tossed an intentional fourth ball and the left fielder did not have another plate appearance. With Roache's help, the Manatees jumped out to a 9-1 lead over Clearwater. Michael Reed also got in on the action with his second home run of the season in the first inning. Brandon Macias, Tyrone Taylor and Garfield also delivered run-scoring doubles to expand the lead. However, the 'Tees almost let the eight-run advantage slip away. Clearwater rallied for four runs in the sixth inning against Brevard starting pitcher Jorge Lopez (3-2, 5.14 ERA). Art Charles and Gabriel Lino came through with the big hits. The pair produced back-to-back two-run singles, but the Threshers could not complete the comeback. After the treacherous sixth, Brevard made a call to the bullpen and brought in southpaw Mike Strong. Clearwater had no answer for the lefty, who struck out seven batters through three scoreless innings. Strong struck out the side in the ninth to complete the save. He only allowed one base runner in his entire outing, when he hit a batter to lead off the ninth. Strong's save helped Lopez secure his third win of the season. He pitched six innings and allowed five runs on six hits. Lopez struck out six Threshers hitters and walked one. Brevard County is now 4-0 against Clearwater this season and the teams will continue their series on Monday night at 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. Left-hander Hobbs Johnson (2-3, 2.33) is expected to start for the Manatees against Threshers' lefty Ethan Stewart (1-2, 3.18). Brevard County Box Score Have a day, Victor Roache! 3-for-3 with three home runs and a walk. Michael Reed also hit his second home run of the year after hitting only one last year at Wisconsin. Tyrone Taylor added two more doubles to give him 14 on the season. Orlando Arcia's 2-for-5 makes him 8-for-19 in his last four games. Arcia also stole a base. Cameron Garfield and Brandon Macias each added a double. Jorge Lopez gave up five runs in six innings. Not his best outing of the season, but he picked up the win. Mike Strong went three scoreless and struck out seven to pick up his first save. 11. Final: Tampa 6, Brevard County 2 Seventh inning dooms 'Tees in 6-2 loss to Yanks By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/4/2/74264342/cuts/Cooper_4.15_640x360_5og27mjb_ex26yq1p.jpg In his first game back since an injury a week ago, Manatees first baseman Garrett Cooper - seen here in a game from earlier this season - hit a solo home run in Brevard County's 6-2 loss to the Tampa Yankees on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees couldn't manage to sweep Saturday's doubleheader as the Tampa Yankees rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to emerge with a 6-2 victory at Space Coast Stadium. Manatees' closer Tanner Poppe, who came into today with a spotless ERA of 0.00, struggled for the first time in 2014. With the score deadlocked at two, Yankees' second baseman Angelo Gumbs lined a single to center to lead-off the inning and first baseman Reymond Nunez followed by drawing a seven-pitch walk. With one out, Jake Cave - who was 0-for-3 at that point in the game - smoked a 2-1 pitch into deep right-center field. The ball sailed way over the head of Tyrone Taylor as both Gumbs and Nunez raced home to give Tampa a 4-2 lead. Tampa (15-13) was not done, however. With two outs, Eric Jagielo hammered a pitch well over the right field wall for his second home run of the doubleheader, his sixth of the year, to put the Yankees up comfortably, 6-2. The Manatees (15-13) did have their fair share of opportunities at the plate as the team left nine runners on base in the seven-inning ballgame. In the bottom of the sixth, the 'Tees had runners at second and third with one out, as well as the bases loaded and two outs. Yankees' reliever Zach Woods, who would go on to pick up his first victory of the season, was able to get out of the jam and keep the game tied. Brevard County did grab the early lead as they jumped out in front 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Garrett Cooper, who had missed eight days with a left elbow injury, stepped up to the plate against Yankees starter Dan Camarena (1-3, 3.34) to lead off the frame. The first pitch that Cooper saw landed well over the right-center field wall for his second homer of the season to put the Manatees up 1-0. Brevard would rally for another run in the inning as a bunt single and a wild pitch moved Brandon Macias to second base with two outs. Taylor then slapped an offering from Camarena into center to score Macias and put the 'Tees up by two. Those were the only two runs the left-hander would surrender on the evening, as Camarena allowed seven hits while walking two and striking out four over five innings. Tampa would tie the game in the top of the fourth inning off Manatees' starter Jed Bradley (3-1, 3.34). Dante Bichette, Jr. blasted the first pitch of the inning to deep center field, well over the 404 foot sign, for his second home run of the doubleheader and his third of the year to pull the Yankees within a run. Peter O'Brien followed with a double and would score to tie the game on a RBI single by Nunez. Bradley, who picked up his second straight no-decision, was impressive once again. Over six innings over work, he allowed those two runs on seven hits and struck out six without walking a batter. The Manatees will continue their homestand as the Clearwater Threshers (5-21) come to Viera to begin a three-game series on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. Right-hander Jorge Lopez (2-2, 4.50) will look to pick up his second straight victory against the Threshers. Clearwater will call upon left-hander Ethan Stewart (1-2, 3.18), who surrendered eight runs against the Manatees in Brevard County's 20-0 win over the Threshers, this past Tuesday. Brevard County Box Score Michael Reed is up to .313 after picking up ten hits in his last four games. Reed singled, doubled and walked. Brandon Macias also went 2-for-3. Garrett Cooper homered and walked in his first game back in the lineup and Tyrone Taylor singled and drew a walk. Jed Bradley went six scoreless before being lifted following the rain delay. Brevard County Play-By-Play Brevard County Bottom of the 2nd Garrett Cooper homers (2) on a fly ball to center field. Brandon Macias singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Dan Camarena. With Parker Berberet batting, passed ball by Trent Garrison, Brandon Macias to 2nd. Parker Berberet pops out to shortstop Cito Culver. Jose Sermo strikes out swinging. 12. Final: Tampa 4, Brevard County 7 Brevard tops Tampa 7-4, in completion of suspended game By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/5/6/74259156/cuts/Roache_4.14_640x360_crd520ry_erj96obd.jpg Manatees left fielder Victor Roache went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Brevard County's 7-4 win over the Tampa Yankees on Saturday night, in a game that originally began on Thursday night but was suspended due to rain. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - It took a couple days with all of the rain on the Space Coast, but the Brevard County Manatees finished off a 7-4 win over the Tampa Yankees on Saturday evening in a game that was suspended on Thursday due to heavy precipitation. The 'Tees (15-12) and Yanks (14-13) resumed play in the top of the fourth inning on Saturday night with Brevard County on top, 4-0. The home side had produced a four-run second inning on Thursday before the rain fell. Brandon Macias and Nathan Orf each delivered sacrifice flies, Yadiel Rivera plated a run with a single and the 'Tees were gifted another run on a Tampa error. Damien Magnifico (1-2, 3.10) started the game on Thursday and threw three scoreless innings, as he yielded three hits and struck out three. Though the 'Tees had all of the offense on Thursday, the Yankees struck first on Saturday. Peter O'Brien led off the fifth inning with a home run and Dante Bichette, Jr. hit a solo homer in the seventh, as the Yanks used the long ball to cut the Manatees' lead to 4-2. However the Manatees would respond, in the bottom half of the seventh. Tyrone Taylor and Victor Roache both delivered the big blows in an inning that produced three runs for Brevard County. Taylor slammed an RBI double, while Roache plated two runs with a two-bagger of his own. The pair of extra-base hits gave Brevard County a 7-2 lead. Tampa mounted a short comeback in the ninth inning that just did not have enough juice. Eric Jagielo began the frame with a homer and then Bichette doubled. Then with one out, Zach Wilson singled to bring home Bichette. That was all Greg Holle would allow though, as he induced a ground out and struck out Jose Toussen to end the ballgame. Brevard's Austin Ross (2-0, 3.43) picked up the win in relief as he came in the game for Magnifico when play resumed on Saturday. He pitched five solid innings, surrendered just two runs on solo homers, allowed one other hit and struck out five Yankees. Yankees' left-hander Eric Wooten took the loss. He was Tampa's starter on Thursday and finished with four runs - three earned - against him over three innings of work. Wooten surrendered seven hits, walked two and fanned one. 15. Final: Brevard County 7, Clearwater 6 (11 Innings) 'Tees complete sweep with 11-inning win By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees CLEARWATER, Fla. - It took 11 innings, but the Brevard County Manatees defeated the Clearwater Threshers, 7-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Bright House Field and completed a three-game sweep, thanks to a go-ahead single by Brandon Macias. Macias delivered the big hit with two outs in the top of the 11th. Tyrone Taylor was on second after working a walk and Michael Reed was on first with a single. Macias - who was 0-for-4 coming into his extra-innings at-bat - hit a hard ground ball past the diving glove of third baseman Harold Martinez, to plate Taylor. Clearwater had to come back to tie the game after trailing by as many as five runs. Brian Pointer got the Threshers started in the sixth inning when he led off with an inside-the-park home run to center field. The ball hit the base of the wall and ricocheted away from Taylor, which allowed Pointer to sprint home and cut the Manatees' lead to four runs. Later in the sixth, Clearwater added a pair more runs to further cut into the deficit. Brevard (14-12) held its 6-4 lead, however, until the eighth inning. With two outs and a runner on, Martinez hit a towering home run over the left field wall to knot the score at 6-6. Brevard starting pitcher Tyler Wagner did not factor in the decision as he went five-plus innings and allowed four runs - two earned - on five hits. Wagner also walked one and struck out four. The Threshers (5-21) had a chance for a walk-off win in the ninth. William Carmona worked a lead-off walk and Anthony Phillips came in to pinch run. Justin Parr bunted him over to second and Phillips advanced to third on a ground out to Mike Garza. Pointer came up with two outs and Phillips 90 feet away, representing the tying run. In a surprise move, Pointer laid down a bunt toward first. The bunt rolled past reliever Chad Pierce and Garza picked it up, then raced to the bag, dove and tagged first base with his glove before Pointer got there. Garza's effort prevented the winning run from scoring and sent the game to extra innings. Tanner Poppe closed out the game in the bottom of the 11th, but not without some drama. Poppe allowed a walk and a single with two outs. With the tying run on second and the winning run on first, the right-hander struck out Chad Carman to end the game. Poppe earned his seventh save of the season and Pierce picked up the win. Five of Brevard's seven runs came in the sixth inning when the Manatees batted around. Victor Roache started the scoring with a two-run triple that plated both Taylor and Reed. Two batters later, Roache would come home on a Yadiel Rivera single to right. After Parker Berberet popped out, Garza singled to put two on with two out. Nathan Orf would then clear the bases with a double to right. Reed reached base five times as he went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and a walk. He has reached base 11 times in his last 13 plate appearances. Rivera recorded three hits and two RBI, while Orf, Berberet and Garza tallied two hits each. After completing their second series sweep of the season, the Manatees return home on Thursday night to start a six-game homestand. The 'Tees begin with a three-game series against the Tampa Yankees (13-12) at 6:35 p.m. Right-hander Damien Magnifico (1-2, 3.46) is expected to start for the 'Tees against Yankees' lefty Eric Wooten (2-1, 2.30). Brevard County Box Score Michael Reed has his average all the way up to .282 and is batting .429 over his last ten games. Reed also stole his 14th base of the year. Yadiel Rivera put together another multi-hit game going 3-for-6. Greg Holle made his 2014 debut and pitched two innings without allowing a run. Tanner Poppe made it a bit interesting, allowing a walk and a hit but picked up his seventh save. 17. Taylor completes Manatees' first cycle Brewers' top hitting prospect finishes 5-for-5, scores five times By Robert Emrich / MiLB.com http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/1/0/73800110/cuts/taylor640_b8pnq9xk_j02ybi07.jpg Tyrone Taylor leads the Florida State League with 11 doubles and is second with 15 extra-base hits. (Cliff Welch/MiLB.com) It only took five innings for Tyrone Taylor to make history on Tuesday night. The Brewers' No. 2 prospect completed the first cycle in franchise history as Class A Advanced Brevard County routed Clearwater, 20-0, at Bright House Field. Taylor, who finished 5-for-5, singled in the first inning, hit a standup triple in the third, doubled in the fourth and slugged a solo homer in the fifth. He walked in the eighth, singled again in the ninth, scored five runs and drove in three. "Honestly, I think it was just everybody hitting the ball," Taylor said. "It's contagious. When you're seeing the ball well, it makes it a lot easier for you. I was trying hard not to think about [the cycle] because my teammates were messing with me, telling me that was all I needed for the cycle. I tried to stay within myself. It's pretty exciting, especially on my mom's birthday." In addition to being the first cycle in the club's history -- and the fourth in the Minor Leagues this season -- it was the first five-hit game by a member of the Manatees since D'Vontrey Richardson had one on May 17, 2011. Taylor also went 5-for-5 last Aug. 20 for Class A Wisconsin. "I have no idea, but that's obviously a cool thing to happen and I'm excited about it," the 20-year-old outfielder said of the first Florida State League cycle since Gustavo Pierre recorded one for Dunedin last Aug. 10. The perfect night raised Taylor's batting average 41 points to .263. He has three homers and an .822 OPS and believes his historic night can provide a boost, not just to him but to a club that's next-to-last in the Florida State League with a .233 batting average. "Definitely," the California native said. "I think as a team we got 22 hits for the first time since 2011 and also three of us had the first three home runs of the year. Hopefully, it gets things going as a team." Orlando Arcia, Milwaukee's third-ranked prospect, was 4-for-7 with three runs scored, while Michael Reed, Cameron Garfield and Michael Garza contributed three RBIs apiece for the Manatees. Brevard County established season highs in runs and hits. "It's fun, to a certain extent," Taylor said. "After awhile, it gets a little long. We had a lot of fun out there and just went out there and did everything right. It was a good night for us." Manatees starter Hobbs Johnson (2-3) cruised with all that run support, limiting the Threshers to five hits while striking out six over six innings. Clearwater's Ethan Stewart (1-2) went 3 1/3 innings and was charged with eight runs -- seven earned -- on seven hits and three walks.
  18. Haha, you beat me to it! 8-for-9 with four extra-base hits over the last two nights will help that average a lot!
  19. Final: Brevard County 20, Clearwater 0 Taylor hits for cycle as 'Tees thrash Threshers, 20-0 Brevard County tallies 22 hits in historic shutout By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees http://brevardcounty.manatees.milb.com/assets/images/0/5/0/72210050/cuts/Taylor_4.15_640x360_hnffi94d_nzx2z83o.jpg Brevard County outfielder Tyrone Taylor became the first player in franchise history to hit for the cycle as he did so in his first four at-bats and finished the night 5-for-5 with three RBI and a walk in the Manatees 20-0 drubbing of the Clearwater Threshers on Tuesday night at Bright House Field in Clearwater. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) CLEARWATER, Fla. - Right fielder Tyrone Taylor hit for the first cycle in the 21-year history of the Brevard County Manatees - and he did it in his first four at-bats - as the 'Tees thrashed the Clearwater Threshers, 20-0 on Tuesday night at Bright House Field. Taylor began the night rather routinely with a single in the first inning. He then got the most difficult part of the cycle out of the way with his next at-bat with a triple in the third. In the fourth, Taylor almost homered over the left field wall, as he drove a line drive that was about a foot too low that hit off the wall for an RBI double. Looking back at it, Taylor is probably fortunate that he did not elevate that ball enough. In his next at-bat, just one inning later, the right fielder drove a no-doubt home run well over the left field wall to complete the cycle, on his mother's birthday. He added another single in the ninth to finish 5-for-5 with three RBI, to become the first Manatee with five hits in a game since D'Vontrey Richardson accomplished the feat against the St. Lucie Mets on May 17, 2011. Taylor's was the first cycle by a Florida State League hitter since August 10, 2013. That night, Gustavo Pierre did it for the Dunedin Blue Jays against Brevard County. Not to be forgotten, the Manatees (13-12) had solid pitching all evening to secure the shutout. Southpaw starter Hobbs Johnson (2-3, 2.33) pitched six scoreless innings on his 23rd birthday. Johnson fell just shy of a season-high with six strikeouts and only surrendered five hits to earn his second win of the season. Martin Viramontes and Stephen Peterson combined for the final three shutout innings. Viramontes set the Threshers down in order, in both the seventh and eighth innings and recorded a pair of strikeouts. Peterson pitched a perfect ninth to finish the win. The Manatees' offense not only scored a season-high 20 runs, they also reached season-bests in hits (22) and home runs (four). Before Tuesday night, the last time that Brevard County scored 20 runs in a game was on April 25, 2003 against the Daytona Cubs. Three Brevard County Manatees hit their first home runs of the season: Mike Garza, Michael Reed and Yadiel Rivera. Brevard also saw six different men notch multi-hit performances. Aside from Taylor's five knocks, Orlando Arcia and Cameron Garfield each had four hits. Arcia was 4-for-7 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored. Garfield went 4-for-4 with a double, three RBI and two walks. Reed, Rivera, Garza and Victor Roache each had two-hit nights. The 'Tees have taken the first two games of the series against Clearwater (5-20) and will go for the sweep on Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Bright House Field. Right-hander Tyler Wagner (3-0, 1.61) will take the hill for Brevard against Clearwater's Brody Colvin (0-1, 6.00). Brevard County Box Score What a night for the Manatees offense. They are way more talented than the numbers have shown recently and it was only a matter of time before the bats started to come around. The big story is obviously Tyrone Taylor's cycle. He went 5-for-5 with two singles, a double, a triple, a home run, a walk, a sacrifice fly, three runs batted in and five runs scored. Taylor's average has shot up sixty-five points over the past two games. He wasn't the only Manatee to put up huge numbers however, as the Sea Cows banged out 22 hits and also drew ten walks. Cameron Garfield went 4-for-4 with a double and two walks. Orlando Arcia was 4-for-7 with a pair of doubles. Michael Reed reached base seven times, with a single, a home run, three walks, a hit-by-pitch and he reached on an error. Victor Roache singled twice. Yadiel Rivera was 2-for-3 with a home run before giving way to Alfredo Rodriguez who singled and walked. Mike Garza had a triple and a home run in six at bats. Hobbs Johnson tossed six scoreless innings to earn his second victory of the year on his 23rd birthday. He allowed five hits, but walked none and struck out six. Martin Viramontes and Stephen Peterson continued the bullpen's domination in April, setting the Threshers down without a hit over the final three innings to preserve the shutout. Brevard County Play-By-Play Lots and lots to check out here, but we'll highlight Taylor's first four at bats. 20. Final: Brevard County 6, Clearwater 5 Five-game skid snapped with 6-5 win over Threshers By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees CLEARWATER, Fla. - With Logan Schafer joining the team on a Major League rehab assignment, the Brevard County Manatees snapped a five-game losing streak by defeating the Clearwater Threshers, 6-5 on Monday night at Bright House Field. Schafer went 1-for-2 with an RBI double in his brief appearance. He also started in center field before being lifted from the game in the third inning for Jose Sermo. Brevard County starting pitcher Jorge Lopez (2-2, 4.50) earned his first win since April 7, as the right-hander reached a season-high in strikeouts with seven over 5.2 innings. Lopez allowed five runs in total, but only three of them were earned because of a pair of Manatees' errors. He also walked one and surrendered seven hits. The 'Tees trailed 1-0 early after a solo homer by Pete Lavin in the first, but the Manatees (12-12) struck back with five runs between the second and third innings. Brandon Macias delivered the first blow for the 'Tees in the second. With Nathan Orf on first, Macias laced a double down the right field line. Clearwater right fielder Nick Ferdinand bobbled the ball in right, which allowed Orf to cross home. Later in the inning, Macias moved to third on a wild pitch and Mike Garza brought him home with an RBI ground out. Schafer's RBI double scored Yadiel Rivera to round out the three-run second. Tyrone Taylor wasted no time providing insurance in the third, as he led off the frame with a line drive home run over the left field wall. Cameron Garfield later singled and moved to second on a passed ball and Orf worked a walk. That gave Macias another chance to come through and he drilled a double down the left field line to plate Garfield. That two-bagger gave the 'Tees a 5-1 lead. Both Taylor and Macias went 3-for-4 on the night, with Macias recording at least two hits in four of his last five games. The advantage felt secure for Brevard County, but a crazy play in the fourth pulled the Threshers (5-19) closer. KC Serna led off the inning with a bunt single to bring Lavin to the plate. Lavin slammed a double to left field and Serna tried to score from first. The Manatees relay throw came to shortstop Orlando Arcia in shallow left, but Arcia's throw slipped out of his hand and rolled toward first base. With nobody in the vicinity, the ball kept rolling. Serna scored easily and Lavin hustled around to score on the two-base error to cut Brevard's lead to 5-3. Clearwater inched within one run the next inning. Gabriel Lino led off with a single and Anthony Phillips' sacrifice bunt moved him over to second. With two outs, Angelo Mora singled home Lino to make it a one-run ballgame. Fortunately for the Manatees, they pushed across an insurance run in the sixth. After reaching on a single and moving to second on a ground out, Sermo tried to steal third base. Lino, the Threshers catcher, bounced the throw to third and it rolled into left field. Sermo crossed home easily to expand the 'Tees advantage to 6-4. The Threshers scored once more in the sixth and brought the tying run on base in the ninth, but Tanner Poppe shut the door with a strikeout of Lavin and picked up his sixth save of the season. In seven appearances thus far in 2014, Poppe has not allowed a run or a walk and has struck out 12 in 10 innings of work. Brevard County and Clearwater will continue their three-game series on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. It will be a battle of southpaws as left-hander Hobbs Johnson (1-3, 3.00) is expected to start for the 'Tees against Threshers lefty Ethan Stewart (1-1, 1.47). Brevard County Box Score The bats finally woke up a bit tonight with six runs on eleven hits. Tyrone Taylor reached in four of his five plate appearances with a walk, two singles and a home run. Brandon Macias stayed hot, going 3-for-4 with two doubles. Macias has multi-hit games in four of his last five and is 9-for-19 during that span. As mentioned above, Logan Schafer was 1-for-2 with a double before giving way to Jose Sermo. It was Sermo's first game action in ten days and he made it count, collecting a hit, a stolen base and a run scored. Nathan Orf was 0-for-1, but reached base three more times with a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch. (How long before someone creates the 'Did Nathan Orf get hit by a pitch' Twitter account?) Jorge Lopez went 5.2 innings and gave up five runs, but only three were earned following errors on Arcia and Macias. He gave up seven hits, but also struck out seven. Michael Strong relieved Lopez and pitched 2.1 scoreless innings. Strong has given up only one run in eight relief appearances now. Tanner Poppe closed it out for save number six. As noted above, Poppe still has yet to be scored upon this season. Brevard County Play-By-Play Some offensive highlights! 21. Final: Brevard County 1, Daytona 2 Manatees fall 2-1 to Daytona on walk-off single Brevard drops fifth straight game, leave 38 on base in four-game set By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - After a tightly contested battle with their I-95 rivals, Willson Contreras delivered the big base-hit as Brevard County Manatees fell victim to a 2-1, walk-off victory by the Daytona Cubs on Sunday evening at Jackie Robinson Ballpark and were subsequently swept in the four-game set. After the first two batters of the ninth inning were retired, Jeimer Candelario snuck a ground ball past the glove of first baseman Michael Garza and down the right field line for a double. Manatees' reliever Tommy Toledo proceeded to intentionally walk Rock Shoulders to bring Contreras to the dish. The catcher had struggled mightily to that point. Contreras committed an error and a passed ball defensively, as well as striking out twice and grounding into a big double play at the plate. On the cusp of his third strike out, Contreras smacked a 0-2 pitch from Toledo into center field. Tyrone Taylor made an accurate throw to the plate, but Cameron Garfield's tag was just a hair late as Candelario scored the winning run. The walk-off loss over shadowed a strong pitching performance by both clubs, most notably starters Tayler Scott (2-2, 3.46) of Daytona and Jed Bradley (3-1, 3.42) of Brevard County. Bradley was spot on for his fourth consecutive outing, but did not factor into the decision. The lefty struck out a career-high nine batters over five innings of work, while allowing one run on three hits and three walks. Scott, who carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his prior start against Brevard (11-12), was impressive again, but did not get a decision as well. The Cubs' right-hander also allowed one run on four hits, walked three and struck out four in six innings. Daytona (9-14) picked up the first run of the ball game off Bradley in the bottom of the fourth. Dan Vogelbach led off the frame with a walk and then stole his first base of the year to get into scoring position. With one out, Candelario singled back up the middle to score Vogelbach and put the Cubs up 1-0. Brevard would rally right back, however, to tie the game in the next half-inning. Alfredo Rodriguez led off with an infield single to short and then advanced to third on a one-out double to left by Brandon Macias. Nathan Orf brought home Rodriguez with a sacrifice fly to deep center to knot the game up at one. The 'Tees had their fair share of opportunities to grab the lead, but failed to do so as they stranded ten runners on base. Their best shot came in the seventh, when Garza reached on an error and Macias singled to start the inning. Orf would sacrifice the runners to second and third, but they would not advance any further. Cubs' reliever Michael Jensen - who would go on to pick up the win - struck out Orlando Arcia and forced Taylor to ground out to end the frame. Jensen was stellar in relief of Scott, as he threw three shutout innings and allowed just two hits while striking out four without walking a hitter. Austin Ross was equally impressive out of the bullpen for the Manatees. The former LSU Tiger turned in his best outing of the season, by also throwing three scoreless innings. He surrendered just two hits and one walk while striking out three. Brevard County will look to end their five-game skid as they head to Clearwater on Monday, to start a three-game series with the Threshers (5-18) at Bright House Field. The 'Tees will send Jorge Lopez (1-2, 4.41) to the hill for his fifth start of the season. The Threshers will counter with right-hander Jeb Stefan (1-1, 6.75). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Jed Bradley threw a lot of pitches and was only able to get through five, but he made those five innings count, striking out nine batters and allowing just one run. Austin Ross was good in relief, going three scoreless. As for the offense, it might be time to think about sacrificing a chicken or something. 25-year-old Brandon Macias had the only multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double. Mike Garza's triple was the only other extra-base hit. After a good start to the season, Tyrone Taylor saw his season average dip below the Mendoza Line with an 0-for-4 day. Brevard County Play-By-Play Garza's triple came to lead off the third inning, but more bad baserunning kept the Manatees from scoring. Brevard County Top of the 3rd Mike Garza triples (2) on a fly ball to left fielder Rock Shoulders. Brandon Macias called out on strikes. Nathan Orf reaches on a fielder's choice out, third baseman Jeimer Candelario to catcher Willson Contreras to third baseman Jeimer Candelario. Mike Garza out at home. Nathan Orf to 2nd on the throw. Orlando Arcia walks. Tyrone Taylor flies out to center fielder Albert Almora. Another missed opportunity came in the seventh Brevard County Top of the 7th Pitching Change: Michael Jensen replaces Tayler Scott. Mike Garza reaches on a throwing error by second baseman Gioskar Amaya. Brandon Macias singles on a ground ball to left fielder Rock Shoulders. Mike Garza to 2nd. Nathan Orf out on a sacrifice bunt, third baseman Jeimer Candelario to second baseman Gioskar Amaya. Mike Garza to 3rd. Brandon Macias to 2nd. Orlando Arcia strikes out swinging. Tyrone Taylor grounds out, shortstop Marco Hernandez to first baseman Dan Vogelbach.
  22. Final: Brevard County 0, Daytona 2 Manatees drop fourth straight in 2-0 loss to Cubs 'Tees drop to .500 for first time, shutout for third time in 2014 By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/5/0/73521850/cuts/Reed_4.15_640x360_kfthcgnd_oj45cqnl.jpg Manatees outfielder Michael Reed, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-3 with a double in Brevard County's 2-0 loss to the Daytona Cubs on Saturday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. In his last five games, Reed is hitting .438. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Despite another strong start by Damien Magnifico (1-2, 3.46), the Brevard County Manatees offense sputtered again in a 2-0 loss to the Daytona Cubs on Saturday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Magnifico delivered another gutsy performance despite being saddled with the loss as he threw 83 pitches in five innings of work. The right-hander allowed two runs on seven hits, while walking one and striking out two. Unfortunately for Magnifico, his counterpart was just as impressive. Daytona's Jose Rosario (2-2, 3.86), who struggled in four innings against Brevard (11-11) on April 4, sparkled in his six innings on the bump. The righty turned in his best performance thus far in 2014, as he did not allow a run on five hits, walked three and struck out five on 91 pitches. The Cubs (8-14) gave Rosario the lead when they brought home the game's only two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Magnifico struck out Bijan Rademacher and Dan Vogelbach to start the inning, Daytona's bats came alive. Chadd Krist singled through the right side and Rock Shoulders advanced him to third on a single of his own. With a 3-1 count, Tim Saunders drove a ball into deep right-center field. Nathan Orf, making just his second start of the season in right field, made a great, diving effort into the gap, but the ball landed just past his outstretched glove. Saunders ended up at third with a two-run triple and gave Daytona a 2-0 lead. The Cubs bullpen followed up Rosario's excellent effort with a dominant performance of its own. Austin Reed and Andrew McKirahan combined to allow just one hit - a single by Orlando Arcia - over the game's final three frames. McKirahan got three ground outs in the top of the ninth to pick up his first save of the year. The Manatees (11-11) best chance offensively came in the top of the third inning. With one out, Brevard County got three consecutive singles by Michael Garza, Orf and Arcia. However, Rosario buckled down to end the threat Cameron Garfield struck out on four pitches and then Victor Roache fouled out to first to end the rally. Arcia and Michael Reed led the charge offensively for the 'Tees. Both hitters extended their hitting streaks to four games with two-hit performances. The Manatees will look to salvage the final game of their four-game series when they battle the Cubs again on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 5:35 p.m. in Daytona Beach. Left-hander Jed Bradley (3-1, 3.80) - the reigning Florida State League Pitcher of the Week - who is looking for his fourth consecutive victory, will take the hill for Brevard. Daytona will counter with right-hander Tayler Scott (2-2, 4.05), who carried a no-hitter into the seventh in his first start against Brevard on April 5. Brevard County Box Score This offense is really struggling right now. Michael Reed had the only extra-base hit as part of a 2-for-3 night. He also drew a walk. Orlando Arcia had a 2-for-4 game as well. Other than than there wasn't much of anything. Nathan Orf singled and walked, and Mike Garza went 1-for-3. Damien Magnifico was in and out of trouble all night, pitching from behind quite a bit, but went five innings and only gave up two runs. Brevard County Play-By-Play The 'Tees missed a golden opportunity to get some runs in the third. According to the radio broadcast, Garza got a bad jump on Arcia's single and had to stop at third. Still, with bases loaded and only one out, you'd hope to get something. Brevard County Top of the 3rd Yadiel Rivera strikes out swinging. Mike Garza singles on a ground ball to left fielder Rock Shoulders. Nathan Orf singles on a ground ball to left fielder Rock Shoulders. Mike Garza to 2nd. Orlando Arcia singles on a line drive to center fielder Pin-Chieh Chen. Mike Garza to 3rd. Nathan Orf to 2nd. Cameron Garfield called out on strikes. Victor Roache pops out to first baseman Dan Vogelbach in foul territory. The only runs of the game came in the fourth. Daytona Bottom of the 4th Bijan Rademacher strikes out swinging. Dan Vogelbach strikes out swinging. Chadd Krist singles on a ground ball to right fielder Nathan Orf. Rock Shoulders singles on a ground ball to right fielder Nathan Orf. Chadd Krist to 3rd. Tim Saunders triples (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Michael Reed. Chadd Krist scores. Rock Shoulders scores. Daytona Cubs Batting Coach Mariano Duncan ejected by HP umpire Alex McKay. Jeimer Candelario walks. Marco Hernandez grounds out, second baseman Orlando Arcia to first baseman Mike Garza.
  23. Final: Daytona 6, Brevard County 3 'Tees squander opportunities in 6-3 loss to Daytona Brevard leaves ten on base, go 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - A night after leaving 11 runners on base, the Brevard County Manatees stranded another ten on the basepaths, as they dropped their third consecutive game, 6-3 to the Daytona Cubs at Space Coast Stadium on Friday night. After trailing for the most of the night, the Cubs (7-14) rallied four two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead for good against Manatees reliever Martin Viramontes. Trailing 3-2, Daytona got a lead-off double from Marco Hernandez to put the tying run in scoring position. Pin-Chieh Chen followed that with a double to deep center to even the score. Dan Vogelbach - who went 4-for-4 in Daytona's Thursday night win - then singled to center to drive in Chen and give the Cubs a 4-3 advantage. The single was the Florida native's seventh hit of the series. The Cubs would tack on two more runs in the top of the ninth. Bijan Rademacher drilled a home run to right and a missed catch error by first baseman Michael Garza, who replaced Garrett Cooper in the eighth, made it 6-3 in favor of Daytona. For the second straight night, the 'Tees (11-10) jumped out to the early lead. With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the first, Cubs catcher Chadd Krist couldn't corral a pitch from starter Felix Pena, which allowed center fielder Tyrone Taylor to score and give Brevard a 1-0 lead. Cooper would add to the Manatees' advantage in the second with a solo shot to left, his first homer of the year, to make it 2-0. Daytona would tie it in the top of the fourth off of Manatees starter Tyler Wagner (3-0, 1.61), thanks to a run-scoring single by Krist and a bases loaded walk to third baseman Jeimer Candelario. After an RBI double in the fifth by Alfredo Rodriguez, Wagner left in line for the victory for the fifth straight start, but the 'Tees bullpen could not hold the lead for him. The righty struggled with his control as he walked five, but kept Brevard County in the game by allowing just five hits and two runs while striking out four in five innings. Pena also struggled with his control, but his night was slightly shorter. After walking four batters, the righty left the game one batter into the top of the fourth inning with what appeared to be an arm injury. At the plate for the Manatees, Brandon Macias, Michael Reed and Rodriguez all had two hits each. The series will now move to Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona for Saturday and Sunday night. The Manatees will turn to Damien Magnifico (1-1, 3.43) to end its three-game losing skid, while Daytona will call on right-hander Jose Rosario (1-2, 5.19). First pitch for Saturday's game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Brevard County Box Score Tyler Wagner struggled with his control, walking five in five innings, but still turned in a decent start, giving up just two runs in five innings. Brandon Macias and Tyrone Taylor gave the 'Tees (11-9) hope when they hit back-to-back singles off of Arodys Vizcaino to begin the ninth. Orlando Arcia walked to load the bases, but that is when Vizcaino bore down. The Cubs (6-14) reliever struck out Michael Reed looking and Victor Roache swinging. Later in the inning, Wilson Contreras gave Daytona the 4-3 lead with a sacrifice fly that scored Almora. Dan Vogelbach had the biggest day at the plate for Daytona. 25. Final: Brevard County 1, Tampa 5 Brevard drops finale to Tampa, 5-1 By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees TAMPA, Fla. - In a game that featured a 24-minute delay due to a power outage at George M. Steinbrenner Field, the Tampa Yankees got just enough of an offensive spark to defeat the Brevard County Manatees 5-1 in the series finale on Wednesday night. The Yankees (11-8) were led offensively by their middle infielders, shortstop Cito Culver and second baseman Angelo Gumbs, who combined for five hits and three RBI. Brevard County (11-8) struck first as they picked up their only run of the game against Tampa starter Dan Camarena (1-2, 3.66) in the fourth inning, but not without squandering some opportunities. Catcher Cameron Garfield started the frame by trying to stretch his lead-off double into a triple, but was gunned down after a strong relay throw by Gumbs. Left fielder Victor Roache followed by scorching a double to left. The 2012 first-round pick then came across to score on a single by right fielder Michael Reed, who advanced to second on the throw home. Reed was then retired for the second out of inning after being picked off second base by Camarena. That was the only negative on the night for Camarena who picked up his first win of the season. The lefty allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out five, before being removed after a power surge delayed play with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. Tampa would rally to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth against Manatees starter Jorge Lopez (1-2, 4.41). After two walks and a single loaded the bases, Culver ripped a single through the left side scoring Zach Wilson and Claudio Custodio to put the Yankees in front and chase Lopez from the ball game. Lopez worked in and out of trouble all night as he took his second loss of the year. The right-hander surrendered just those two runs on six hits, walked three and struck out three over 4.1 innings. Tampa would add one more run in the sixth and two more in the eighth against reliever Austin Ross. With one out in the sixth, Gumbs singled to right and then stole second base. The second baseman would then score on a Wilson ground-rule double to right to extend the lead to 3-1. Peter O'Brien led off the eighth with a double to left and was then driven home on an RBI triple into the left-center field gap by Gumbs. Wilson then drove in the game's fifth and final run with a sacrifice fly to left field. Yankees reliever Tyler Webb picked up his third save of the year as he went two innings to close the door on Brevard County. The left-hander struck out four and did not allow a base runner.
