  1. Ted Williams, the greatest hitter of all-time. Did any of you catch the new episode of PBS' American Masters about Ted Williams? It debuted on Monday night, and I really enjoyed it. It covers much the same ground that HBO Sports' Legends & Legacies did, but there were newer interviews, and different footage. It also included newly discovered color footage of Williams' last game, and home run in his final at bat. Glorious. A 19 year old kid took his camera to Fenway and shot footage from all along the third and first base lines, as well as from the bleachers. Highly recommended for any fans of the former Red Sox great. My favorite little gem-the day that Williams returned from Korea, and showed up at Fenway to see then team owner Tom Yawkey, Williams just wanted to go fishing. The owner convinced him to take batting practice. Some press, his teammates, and a handful of workers and fans who were there got a chance to see Williams hold and swing a bat for the first time in nearly 500 days. He roped a few line drives with the first pitches, and the pitcher said, "hey Ted, you look pretty good up there." Williams replied, "shut up and throw the f_____ ball." LOL Nothing had changed. His singular focus was as sharp as ever.
  2. Yelich has gone absolutely bonkers the last eight games. 17 for 33 (.515 AVG), 5 runs, 4 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 10 RBI. .529 OBP/.939 SLG/1.469 OPS.
  3. Here's a thought. How bad is this offense if we don't get Cain and Yelich in the offseason? We had ten hits tonight, and those two combined for 7 of 'em.
  4. Please don't walk, because the bases loaded curse is still in full effect, and if the Brewers load em, and F it up with no outs, I'm..... Oh, a walk. Bases loaded. Who's going to get it done for the good guys??????
  5. Jimmy's had some setbacks, but he doesn't seem too discouraged. I've been following him closely on Twitter. There's a chance he could make it back late this year, but he needs to be shut down until spring training, if he's ready. The offensive rebuild began with bringing in Cain and Yelich. I think that's a great start. Hiura has an advanced bat. I don't know how much power he'll have, but a solid .300 + hitter with a strong OBP fits in nicely atop the order. He's got to prove himself at the Major League level, but a 70 hit tool from a middle infielder has me giddy, and being parked next to Arcia will help somewhat minimize any slight defensive deficiencies. That could be our double play combo for the next decade. The offense does have holes, and way, way too much swing-and-miss. This will be a pivotal offseason, for sure.
  6. I don't want to empty the cupboards just for the sake of making a move. I wanted Realmuto, but it seems the consensus is we'd have to give up too much. They're right. Stearns is looking to build a champion, and he can't worry about appeasing a restless fan base. He has to keep to the plan. Think about what we'll have next year: 1B Aguilar/Thames 2B Hiura SS Arcia (I'm confident he will turn it around) 3B Shaw LF Yelich CF Cain RF Santana (?) C ? Bench Braun Perez Broxton Phillips Gone (I hope): Sogard, Orf, Kratz, Saldano, Bandy Rotation pool Nelson Guerra Burnes Peralta Chacin Anderson Davies Bullpen Hader Jeffries Williams Knebel Lopez I'm hoping that Burnes gets a legit shot at the starting rotation next year. The way I see it with a quick look over, catcher needs to be addressed. Immediately. I just don't know if Nottingham has the hit tool to play the position full time. A lot of holes in his swing. The middle of the infield will be infinitely better if Arcia can get back on track. And Santana needs to get it together, because I sure as hell don't want to see Eric Thames in the outfield ever again.
  7. Yelich has had some pretty good seasons before this one. I'm surprised he'd never been an All Star until 2018.
  8. Do any of you know where I could find historical split info on team seasons filtered for the lowest AVG with the bases loaded? Baseball Reference is my usual go to, but unless I'm missing something, I don't see an option for bases loaded performance. We're hitting .187 total with the bases loaded. Hitting .222 with the bases loaded and zero outs. Hitting .143 with the bases loaded and one out. Hitting .200 with the bases loaded and two outs. That's depressing, especially with one out. That's slightly better than one hit every at bats. As mentioned, our OPS is putrid. I'd love to see which teams have been worse. Just for comparison, some top Brewer offenses of the past: The 1979 Brewers (95-66) hit a whopping .333 with the bases loaded (35-105, 109 R, 2 HR, .872 OPS) The 1982 Brewers (95-67) hit .274 (29-106, 100 R, 2 HR, .733 OPS) The 2011 Brewers (96-66) hit .261 (31-119, 83 R, 1 HR, .605 OPS)
  9. Evening, gentlemen. What the hell is going on with Pittsburgh? After they took five from us, they swept a three game series from Cincy. Ok, no biggy there. But they're destroying the Tribe tonight. Indians are a good team. I can't say Gregory Polanco has suddenly turned into Babe Ruth with his power display (because Matt Carpenter has already secured that. God, I hate acknowledging a Cardinal player being on fire. Makes me feel like taking a shower). But Polanco is crushing the ball of late. Staring Marte, too. Both have homered again tonight, and the two have combined for 11 home runs and 27 RBI in the last eleven games.
  10. Things can change so quickly, can't they? That's part of the greatness of baseball, and the seemingly perpetual frustration of being a Brewers fan. I'm getting through this rough patch by repeating, "they're ahead of schedule, they're ahead of schedule" over and over again, assuming (hoping) that good things are going to come. This time next year, God willing, Arcia has righted the ship with his bat, and Huira is manning second base full time. Santana has at least found some of his power, and Aguilar doesn't regress terribly. A healthy Jimmy Nelson to start the season, joined by Burnes in the rotation (?), and things could start progressing quite nicely. That's me hanging on to the ship in the middle of the storm.
  11. Nothing the Brewers do now is going to make the difference for 2018. I'm absolutely sure of this. Hopefully we land in the wild card, but I don't see this top 25 man roster seriously competing in a post season series, even with the extra 15 at our disposal. The one move I'd really love to see before the deadline is getting Realmuto from Miami. His 151 OPS + is likely unsustainable, but I love his profile. He could be had without selling the farm. That's a real nice piece going forward, as he's only 27 with 486 Major League games.
  12. I agree with everything you just said. Didn't Braun have some success when he was batting lower in the lineup? Fifth, I believe. His batting fourth today is due to matchups and injuries, but when Aguilar and (hopefully) Shaw are back and healthy, I'd have no issue with Brauny batting sixth. I haven't seen him play enough lately, but I have to think that he's pressing slightly. How could he not, given his contact rate, and lack of results. A 100 pt drop off from your career BAbip has to make any great hitter press. The Brewers are not as bad as they've been as late. They're not as good as they were early. Braun isn't as bad as he's been this year. I'm just hoping that Stearns keeps everything in perspective as the 31st trade deadline draws closer.
  13. So much for taking the series. And we get to see these guys again a week from now...in Los Angeles. That should be fun.
  14. I never said that Braun was going to play 162 games. What I was showing, however, was that Braun's production when he has played hasn't been as bad as everybody thinks.
  15. Hmm, I bet a lot of people in Los Angeles were saying the same thing about Kemp prior to the season, looking at several seasons of abysmal production prior to 2018. "The old Kemp can't come back". Kemp's season high point came June 6th. He was hitting .353 with a .983 OPS. Since then? 35 games played, Kemp is hitting .246 with 3 2B, 0 3B, 5 HR and 21 RBI, slashing .308 OBP/.398 SLG/.706 OPS. Since June 6th, Braun and his horrible 2018 hitting has hit .250 with 4 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR and 11 RBI, slashing .268/.475/.743. Braun's OPS since June 6th is 37 points higher than Kemp's. We were 37-25 on June 6th, and have gone 18-20 since. How, exactly, would Kemp have helped us during this cold streak? He's fallen off a cliff, offensively, morphing back into the fringe Major Leaguer he's been for the past six seasons. Braun, as bad as he's been, as still outperformed Kemp for the last month and a half. And, tell me, what major injuries has Braun suffered? Some back issues. Clearly, he's still hitting the ball as hard as he ever has. The thumb? He's been dealing with that for several seasons, and after injections, he's bounced back significantly. With all those injuries, he's been better than Kemp, of late.
  16. Braun's 2018 numbers projected over a full 162 game, even with all the bad luck: 75 runs scored, 32 doubles, 3 triples, 23 home runs, 79 RBI. Simple projections don't consider the occasional hot streak, which Braun is long overdue for. The slash line is ugly, but to say that Braun has not produced is simply inaccurate. 23-25 home runs, and 80 RBI...the vast majority of Major League hitters would consider that a decent campaign. We're used to so much more from Braun, and he's still making strong contact, so we're baffled by his considerable drop off from 11 prior seasons. I'm betting he is, too.
