Braves Open To Trading Jurrjens, Prado
paul253 replied to cvollbrecht's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
If we couldn't get Minor for Hart, we're not getting Jurrjens. That's a poor comparison. Minor at the time was considered one of the better pitching prospects in all of baseball. And Hart at the time was a pending free agent. It would have been trading 6 years of Minor for a few months of Hart. Supposedly the Brewers could have gotten Brandon Beachy for Hart. I'd take that trade in an instant right now. If Jurrjens is on the block its because the Braves think he'll miss more time and is closer the FIP 4.00 pitcher he has been the last two years than the pitcher he was in 2008 and 2009. It might also be that they have an excess of top major league ready pitching prospects and want to use that excess to fill a hole (unlike Milwaukee's strategy). Maybe they are down on Jurrjens a bit but I think it's too soon to suggest that the only reason he's on the block is because they think he's done. -
Braves Open To Trading Jurrjens, Prado

I'm a little confused by the article. I don't know if they are talking about Cain/Myers for Jurrjens/Prado or one for one or one for two or what. But if they are considering those two....Cain isn't really a top prospect and Myers doesn't look like he'd be ready right away, which kind of defeats the purpose of trading for him. Hart has some pretty decent value. And let's not forget Atlanta is considering trading Jurrjens because they have a surplus of major league ready pitching. Teams know that so they can't ask for too much. I think Hart would be a good start and it wouldn't take much more than a mid level prospect to complete the deal. -

I don't see the Brewers being a fit for a trade here. Jurrjens will go to the Royals and Prado will go somewhere else. I would trade Hart straight up for Jurrgens in a heart beat if it was offered. I think Hart's value is as high as it's going to be. His defense and baserunning took a nosedive this year and the fact that he is incapable of hitting 5th or 6th effectively is a huge concern for me. Assuming he is healthy, Jurrgens is better than at least two and possibly three of our current starters. He's also under control for a few more years, which three of our five starters are not. He is in the prime of his career and, minus a little hiccup in 2010, has VERY good career numbers. If you trade for him, you could then trade Wolf, Marcum, or Narveson for another piece. I'd prefer Marcum or Wolf because they are expensive and are free agents after year's end. Or you could keep all of them, move Narveson to the bullpen for a year as a lefty or long man and your rotation (and depth) would be better than it was this year. Trading Hart for Jurrgens would also save money this year and would allow us to spend more on a free agents if they want to. Atlanta has a ton of pitching and now is the time to get them. They need a power hitting outfielder and it just so happens we have one who they might like (they did last year). If they are willing to move Jerrjens for Hart or Hart and a mid level prospect I think you jump all over that. -

I'll pass on trading them Hart. Hart is better than Prado, and we don't need Jurrjens. How can you say we don't need him? Do we have 5 starting pitchers better than him? And Prado could be a perfect buy low candidate. I think we need to deal Hart. His value is about as high as it could be right now and we do have some outfielders on the cusp on being ready (Schafer and Gindl). Trading Hart will make up for the salaries of the other two but it also gives you the option of getting something for Marcum, Wolf, or Narveson. And depending on what you want to do with Prado, you could either dump McGehee and let Prado play third or maybe move Braun to right and play Pardo in left. Or he could just be a utility guy which means you don't have to worry about signing Hairston. I'd jump all over this is I were Milwaukee. Maybe Hart and McGehee for these two. -
Or at 1B if the team doesn't think Gamel's bat is adequate. Who do we have in the minors who will put up numbers better than Gamel on a regular basis? The difference between first and short though is that you can put pretty much anyone at first base and they'd be ok. Braun, for instance. If absolutely necessary he could be moved to first. So could Hart. McGehee. In the minors now you have Khris Davis that could end up at first. Shortstop you have to have a very specific tool set to play. We've seen guys like Gennett and Farris struggle when they were playing shortstop. I actually think Gamel will be fine though and I would save the money and use him. Derek Lee would actually be my second choice. Forget Pena. He's too expensive for a guy that's gonna hit .215. And Lee is a superior fielding first baseman. If we do indeed decide to go after free agents like Pena rather than playing Gamel & Green next season, then I have to question the future of the franchise I agree 100% with this. You struggled all year at third base and here you have a guy that had a spectacular year in AAA and will be cheap and controllable for awhile. Same with first base. Your guy is leaving and in the minors you had a player who hit over .300 and had something like 26 home runs. I realize there is a big difference between AAA and the majors but at some point you need to see what you've got. It would be extremely beneficial to the future of the organization if Gamel and Green turn into even average players. At the very least it would buy you some time to restock the system.

Peralta has to be considered untouchable. He is exactly what this team needs and we cannot afford to trade him. If this season shows me anything it's that this team lives and dies with pitching. There are going to be some really serious questions about the rotation in the coming months with three possible free agents after the 2012 season. Peralta should be the guy that helps ease the burden, not yet another prospect traded away for an expensive veteran. I have no problem trading Hart and Green and any other position prospect to get Wright. But I do not include Peralta and would rather not include Thornburg.

I have this awful feeling the Brewers won't offer arby to K-Rod. I see no reason not to but I'm just worried that the Brewers are going to play it overly safe with their finances. I'd be ok with the 4 extra picks. 2 for Fielder and 2 for K-Rod.
-
The point is that if the Brewers wanted to spend on the FA market, they can do so by going with in house options at 1B and 3B at the minimum. I understand that. The other poster just made it sound like Green and Gamel were set at third and first base respectively and we didn't need to worry about those positions. Nothing anyone in the organization has said or done has ever indicated that though.
-
We have in house solutions at first and third with Gamel and Green We do, but neither of them has really been given a vote of confidence from anyone in the organization as far as playing full time next season.
-
The Brewers have too many other holes to fill to spend this much money on a pitcher I think. You need to find solutions are three regular positions (first, third, short) and you need to fill a few bullpen spots. If this was post 2012 and three of your starters leave then I'd say go for it. But I don't think that the Brewers can spend that much money on a starter.

I see John Lackey will be out for the year with TJ surgery. Maybe Boston will be desperate enough to overpay for Marcum? I don't know Boston's system at all. What do they have in terms of minor league pitching or shortstops that would match up with Milwaukee's needs?

Phillies decline options on Lidge and Oswalt
paul253 replied to BuckyBrewer61's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
He would seem to have Texas or Atlanta written all over him if he decides to keep playing. I'll pass on Lidge I agree with Texas but Atlanta is loaded with pitching depth. I wouldn't mind taking a shot on Lidge if it's a reasonable deal. -
That doesn't mean that anyone has said that he should be in a Brewer uniform the entire time and any CF prospect should be traded away. My original post said that Morgan was a nice stopgap. Someone else asked in what world he was considered a stopgap. I took that to mean that he wanted Morgan around for awhile, longer than a one or two year stopgap which is what I consider him. Schafer isn't that good of a prospect. He's never going to be confused with Andrew McCutchen but we don't currently have anyone in the system that profiles as regular all-stars like we did when Fielder, Weeks, and Braun were coming up. The current backbone of the team includes a lot of veterans who are starting to get expensive (Braun, Weeks, Hart, McGehee) and three starting pitchers who will be free agents after next season. Somewhere along the line you're going to develop your own guys so you can save money. And while Schafer may not profile to be a major league all-star, he is currently one of the best positional prospects we have.
-
Next year isn't a problem. But I'm under the impression some people are suggesting we keep him two or three more years.
-
Is there anyone who is suggesting that Morgan is someone the Brewers should build around? If you're talking about blocking one of you better prospects so Morgan can continue to play then it is almost the same as suggesting that the Brewers should build around Morgan.
-
who said Schafer was the best CF is the system. It was not clear to me he meant to include the Big Club because Gomez is awfully good Someone else actually said he was the second best defensive outfielder in the system because I do remember him saying he was second only to Gomez. I swear it was Melvin. If Nicholas said he was the best CF in the system it just furthers the point, though I assume he meant in the minors because it would take an amazing type player to be better than Gomez. I do appreciate the new info though.
-
Schafer hasn't had an ISP above .100 except for his time in the PCL. That's Counsell like. I can't believe we're arguing about power numbers when comparing Logan Schafer and Nyger Morgan. Neither is a power hitter and you shouldn't use power numbers as a knock on either. That's not their game. But to respond to your comment, Schafer has not really any had any full, healthy season. A torn groin muscle, a sports hernia and a fractured foot aren't going to help anyone's power numbers, not necessarily with home runs but with stretching singles into doubles and doubles into triples. Not to mention power is one of the last tools to develop. He's never going to put up Mike Cameron type power numbers as a centerfielder but to cast him aside based on statistics from from his injury filled minor league seasons seems a bit ridiculous to me. And not sure why you think 33 is old. I think most people use 30 as the magical age when a player's performance starts to go down a bit. And centerfield is a very demanding position. It's not out of line to think that the older someone gets their ability to catch up to those balls on a consistent basis is going to diminish. He needs a full year down in AAA to prove he can stay consistent and healthy. The earliest I'd give him a shot at a full-time major league job is 2013. And just to be clear. I'm not suggesting we give center to Schafer next season. I agree 100% with the above comment.
-
No he's most likely a down grade defensively, and offensively. And power matters everywhere. It was either Melvin or Roenecke, I believe Melvin, who said that Schafer was the second best defense outfielder in the entire system behind only Carlos Gomez. You can debate that if you want, but it's not just a given that Morgan is better defensively than Schafer, Even if he is, it's not like you're throwing Mark Kotsay out there. And yes power does matter to an extent, but some people also vastly overrate it. Bentancourt has some pretty decent power. Does that make him a good hitter? Beside, Nyger Morgan isn't exactly Barry Bonds out there. It's hard to envision anyone who is a significant downgrade, power wise, from Nyger Morgan. You never answered my question though. How long do you think we should hold onto Morgan? Are you willing to bench a major league ready prospect in so a 33 year old Morgan can play another year?
-
In what universe is a 4 win player a stop gap? And I don't buy Schader's power at AAA from last season. The kind of universe where the guy will be 32 years old after next season, has been traded away from multiple teams because he becomes a distraction in the clubhouse, is starting to get to his expensive years and you have a capable in-house replacement with a ceiling equal to or higher than the current player. How long do you think we should hang on to Morgan? I like Morgan as much as the next guy but he's not a franchise cornerstone anymore. And who cares about Schafer's power numbers? He's a center fielder and probably an upgrade defensively from Morgan, which says a lot. I'm more concerned about his on base numbers considering where he'd likely be hitting in the order (1st, 2nd, or 8th). Worry about Braun, Weeks and Hart's power numbers.
-
I think if you are willing to take pitching prospect in return for Hart you could get something good for him. I prefer they trade him because he's coming off of two pretty good years and has two years left on his contract so he won't be a rental. Atlanta has a ton of pitching prospects. I'd approach them and see if I couldn't swing a deal for one of them.
-
Prince Fielder has never shown one iota of interest in staying in Milwaukee. He has spoke well of his time, but I don't think it could be any more clear that he's in it for the money. Braun could have made more than Fielder did on the open market but chose to sign not one but two contract extensions that more or less guarantees he will be a career Brewer. If Fielder wanted to play in Milwaukee longer, even if it wasn't for his entire career, he'd had said something that indicated that is what he wanted. He's done the exact opposite. as well as Hart and Weeks. I'm sorry but Corey Hart needs to be traded this offseason. He was always my favorite prospect coming up but I think we need to sell high on him. Melvin already had a chance to sell high on him last season and reportedly get Brandon Beachy, but he passed. The outfield FA market is weak this offseason. Melvin should be able to get a fairly highly regarded prospect. Hart's defense and even his base running took a nose dive this season and offensively I think his lack of strike zone discipline is a bad sign.
-
I don't think his trade value will ever be higher.... I don't think that means it's "high" though. If he were 23 or 24 maybe, but the guy is 31 years old. I'd keep him one more year and then give Logan Schafer his job. He is a solid stop gap for us. Hopefully Schafer continues to stay healthy and progress. Injuries are the only thing that have stopped him.

Is 1st round pick compensation a given with K-Rod?
paul253 replied to NYChez's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
I think teams who are willing to spend big time on closers are more likely to be winning teams. I don't see why a team with a bunch of holes, a team like the Cubs, Pirates, Padres, Royals, etc would spend a ton of money on a closer when they don't tend to have a whole lot of save opportunities. Plus, one of the best ways to increase a no-name players value and then trade him for prospects is to put him as a closer and get him a bunch of saves. I'd venture to say the likelihood of getting fist round compensation is higher for KRod then it would be for Fielder. Whatever happens though it's nice that the Brewers will get multiple compensation picks. There is no reason not to offer KRod arbitration. He made it clear he wants to be a closer. He knows he won't be the closer in Milwaukee and he will leave. But even if he does accept, you pay him a bunch yes but you also keep that amazing 1-2 punch in the bullpen that won us so many games this past season. And his trade value would be high next season if things don't work out standings-wise. Not offering him arby would be a huge blunder, especially for a team with a borderline terrible farm system. -
He's just being complimentary. He's not gonna come out and say that Betancourt is awful and he'll definitely replace him. Melvin will sign a cheaper, better alternative If you read the link, this was supposedly his response when asked about the left side of the infield. The used the entire comment to compliment Yuni. He didn't mention McGehee or Green or Hairston. And even I can think of a way to say they underperformed without insulting or blaming anyone. I read this more as him going out of his way to compliment Yuni than just be PC about it.
-
Come on people this is Doug Melvin we're talking about. He probably doesn't see Yuni B as a problem. And that leads to this. Melvin's comments on Yuni B...... "I thought Yuni Betancourt was a better player than what his critics said. I thought he did a very good job. If you look at the on-base percentage, that's the thing that always seems to hurt him. I thought he made a lot of good plays, a lot of outstanding plays. I like the way he starts a double play. He's as good as I've seen doing that. He made some outstanding plays. I'm very surprised at the critics of him, personally. I know a lot of it is the analytical studies defensively. I'm not a total believer in that. Sure, he made some errors but he also made some outstanding plays." Yuni B. will be a Brewer next year. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/132172268.html
