  1. With regards to pinch-hitting for Clayton in the 9th: I don't know if Pittsburgh had anyone up in the pen or who they had available, but my guess is that Ned decided he preferred Clayton facing a guy who had already thrown 120 pitches and probably was tiring instead of VDW facing whatever lefty they would have brought in. I'm not saying I agree with that decision, I'm just guessing that was what he was thinking.
  2. I didn't see this mentioned anywhere else; I apologize if I missed it. Did anyone else have a problem with Richie's throw (lob?) to Dejean covering first? I played first base in high school, and was taught only to flip the ball to the pitcher underhanded when I was within a few feet of the bag. Otherwise, I was taught to throw overhand in a shortarm motion (kind of like throwing a dart). I was also taught to get the ball to the pitcher before they got to the bag to avoid them having to catch the ball and step on the bag at the same time. It looked to me that the ball arrived right when Dejean tried to step on the bag, which is why he missed the the base. If Richie would have thrown it on a line to Dejean, Dejean could have caught the ball before getting to the base, then would not have had to slow down and instead could have sprinted through the base. Has anyone received any coaching in professional baseball as to how to properly execute this play? I would be interested to find out if Richie played it how he was taught.
  3. He has struck out the side the last two innings. Does he go back out for the 9th having thrown 127 pitches? 19 Ks still a possibility. Is Wellemeyer available today? Edit: nope, and hope so
  4. Going into today's game I only expected the Crew to have about three good opportunites to score. O for 1. Gotta make some contact there Wes!
  5. "Eric Orlando Young is 36 years old and has over 5100 AB in the major leagues. I still am absolutely amazed that another 100 AB is going to make any difference in what people think they will be getting with EY." While I am among those who advocate removing EY in favor of Ginter, I think he does have to play well to help his trade value. He has 5100 AB, but not many of those have come as a 36 year old with declining skills. Contenders know that he could play when he was 31, but they have to know if he can still play now that he is 36.
