  1. I see Perez as a super utility guy who gets 3-4 starts a week all around the infield or in RF, plus as a good pinch hitter on the days he doesn't start. Depth is important and something that we're finally starting to build (Santana is a huge step up in outfield depth over Flores). If you look back at our playoff years, players like Mark Kotsay and Jerry Hairston Jr. stand out to me as huge pieces that helped us get to the playoffs, not just the every day guys (although I'll admit Hairston became an every day guy at the end there). Would it be great if Perez doubles his walk rate next year and hits 20 homers and takes over 2nd base from Scooter? Sure, but until then Scooter serves a purpose. I wouldn't look to deal him just to do it while we're rebuilding. I like Perez but I'm cautiously optimistic about his future, and I would love it if he was our super utility guy for the future, maybe building his way up to an everyday role if he improves more. If Arcia doesn't show improvement and they decide to start him at AAA next year, then Perez definitely has a shot to get a lot more playing time at 3B to start the year next year though.
  2. Segura in 2016: 119 OPS+, 27/35 SB, 7 E Villar in 2016: 118 OPS+, 50/66 SB, 21 E Segura has been steadier on defense, but adjusted for ballpark, their bats have been pretty much the same. They have about the same success percentage for stolen bases, only Villar has almost twice as many. Villar has two more years of control, already this year costs $2M less than Segura, and probably has more room to get better next year than Segura. Segura is also due a big raise next year, while Villar will still be making near the league minimum. Let's say our return for Aaron Hill balances out losing Tyler Wagner. That means essentially we lost Segura but got back a Anderson and Diaz, who's likely to be a top 100 prospect at some point in his minor league career, then we were able to go get Villar for practically nothing to replace most of Segura's production. And that's even with the hindsight that Segura would go off on his own and fix his swing, which who knows if he's even able to do that as a Brewer. Would it be nice to have Segura at 2B right now? Yes, but Villar is a really exciting player that at this point I would take over Segura (especially Segura as he was when we traded him), and while we can only speculate now, opinions might change once Isan Diaz works his way through our system.
  3. I was really excited to see Middlebrooks get called up but he just did not make the most his opportunity, then he got injured. My guess is he gets a decent look in September and if he can show something, we'll consider him for next season, but otherwise we'll DFA him. He's worth one more look before we send him on his way, he's low risk but potentially very high reward if he could get back to what he was.
  4. Middlebrooks is out of options, so he can't be sent down. He's been out a while, I think if it's a matter of a couple days they will try to make his rehab assignment last until September 1st. They are starting him in Appleton, so they can keep him there for a few games, then move him up to AAA. I really doubt that they'd option Broxton or Arcia at this point, since they don't want to delay their development or affect their confidence negatively even for a few days. I think it's more likely that they'd option a reliever like Cravy or Suter for a few days if they absolutely have to.
  5. If Thornburg finishes the year strong and racks up 20 saves in the first half of 2017, he'll fetch an Andrew Miller-sized return at the trade deadline. His numbers this year are elite level by any measure (even his great start in 2013 looks like pedestrian numbers compared to this year), proving that he can be an elite closer when healthy (here's hoping he stays healthy). Lumping him in with Braun would not be like lumping in Jeffress with Lucroy (who most non-Brewers fans considered to be more of an 8th inning guy than a closer). Thornburg will fetch a giant haul on his own, as could Braun if we do it right (eat some salary). Agreed that digging through the low minors could be best for Braun, so we can maybe get 3 guys with high ceiling potential (similar to the Tulowitzki trade, where we maybe take someone with high salary off the Dodgers' hands (McCarthy?), or just straight eat money).
