  1. Solid Timber Rattlers' victory in Game Two. Justin Jarvis - 1 run, 1 hit, 10 Ks in 5 innings of work. Sweet! And Zavier Warren reminds us not to sleep on his prospect status: 2-run homer to grab a 3-1 lead. Cam Robinson keeps doing Cam things: 3-up, 3-down final frame with 2 Ks for his 18th save of 2022.
  2. The Low-A Mudcats won the series opener at home against Fayetteville, so look to double their advantage with 20-year old RHP Alexander Cornielle (3.44 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 11.0 K/9 in 55 innings) on the mound tonight. 19-year old SS Eduardo Garcia continued his terrific June (.890 OPS this month) with a 3-for-4 effort yesterday:
  3. After dropping the series opener, RHP Justin Jarvis (4.11 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 10.0 K/9 in 70 innings) takes the hill for Wisconsin at home against Cedar Rapids to try to knot things up 1-1. 22-year old switch hitter 2B Jose Acosta has been a nice addition to the team this month (.743 OPS in 53 plate appearances):
  4. Wisconsin and Cedar Rapids have resumed yesterday’s rain-delayed game in Appleton, with the Timber Rattlers trailing 5-0 in the 3rd inning. RHP Miguel Guerrero has taken over where RHP Zach Mort left off yesterday.
  5. The reverse jinx worked, as the Shuckers and Mudcats both came from behind to win their games. Carlos Luna, Kent Hasler and Andruw Monasterio were especially impressive for Biloxi, while Eduardo Garcia and Michele Vassalotti stood out for Carolina. Along with Carlos F. Rodriguez for the Mudcats, of course, though that effort was squandered in the middle innings before the Carolina comeback.
  6. Oh, no! We trail 15-2 across the 4 games of full season affiliates (each game about halfway through). And at home, no less! C’mon men!
  7. The Sounds complete the full season quartet by also playing at home this week, facing Pirates’ AAA affiliate Indianapolis. RHP Alec Bettinger (6.48 ERA in 25 innings) will start Game One, still searching for his solid form of previous years. C Mario Feliciano has reached base in his last 9 games, homering in 2 of his past 4 contests:
  8. The AA Shuckers are home this week, hosting the Mississippi Braves, with RHP Justin Bullock (5.85 ERA, 1.80 WHIP, 5.9 K/9 in 20 innings) getting the start in the opener. INF Cam Devanney’s hitting streak is up to a whopping 19 games (1.079 OPS during this stretch):
  9. The Timber Rattlers are winners of 5 in a row and aim to keep that momentum going at home against the Twins’ terrific High-A Cedar Rapids squad. RHP Zach Mort will make his 3rd start of 2022, aiming for a repeat of his last outing (5 scoreless innings, 3 hits, 2 walks, 3 Ks). LF Tristan Peters’ bat is starting to heat up again (homered, doubled in last game):
  10. The Mudcats have lost 6 in a row, but are home this week against Astros’ Low-A affiliate Fayetteville. Exceptional RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez looks for a win to counter his 1-run, 1-hit loss last week. 18-year old CF Jackson Chourio has a ridiculous .709 SLG thus far in June, hitting his 7th homer of the month on Sunday:
  11. - RHP Lun Zhao of Low-A Carolina has retired - LHP Scott Sunitsch begins rehab assignment with ACL Brewers Gold - RHP Edrian Robinson of ACL Brewers Blue placed on 60-day injured list
  12. For only the 2nd time this season (thus far), the Brewers two DSL squads were victorious on the same day. Terrific starting pitching from 18-year old LHPs Anfernny Reyes (5 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks) and Osbriel Mogollon (4 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 8 Ks). 17-year old switch-hitting INF Jhonny Severino continues his hot streak (2 doubles, 1 triple), while consistently-excellent 17-year old switch-hitting OF Luis Lara collected another 2 hits. Keep it up!
  13. - RHP Trevor Kelley optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers (making room for Brandon Woodruff to re-join the Brewers from the injury list)
  14. Whew! Logic has prevailed, after months of Rick Sweet playing musical chairs in AAA while Mike Guerrero in AA probably wondered why he was dealt the short straw-bench for the second straight season. Let's go Shuckers!
  15. Sharing ACL game summaries: ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE Final: ACL Brewers Blue 7, ACL Giants Black 1 Box Score / Game Log The Brewers in Blue improved to 4-12 with a comfortable victory over the 11-3 Giants Black team in this 7-inning game. 19-year old (turning 20 this Friday) starting RHP Alexander Vallecillo won his second straight game, giving up just one run on three hits while striking out 11 hitters and walking one. He’s now K’d 27 batters in 20 innings pitched. The team jumped out to a 5-0 second inning lead on a Jonatan Guzman 2-RBI single, Jace Avina (season OPS .869) RBI double and Daniel Guilarte (season OPS .821) 2-RBI single. Avina also doubled and scored on a Guilarte RBI single in the fourth inning. Dual-threat Quinton Low tripled and scored in the fifth inning to complete the scoring. The 13th round 2021 draft pick has pitched in 3 games (4 innings – 0.00 ERA) and also played 10 games at first base (40 plate appearances - .623 OPS). Registering 8 hits in 28 at-bats sounds a lot better than striking out 13 times in 28 at-bats. Both happened for the Blue squad in this game, with OF Eduarqui Fernandez victimized 3 times to drop his OPS to .779. DH/INF Alexander Perez stole two of Blue’s four bases in the game. 19-year old RHP Samuel Dario (3.00 ERA, 1.08 WHIP in 12 innings this year) bounced back from his last relief outing, pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Final: ACL Padres 7, ACL Brewers Gold 3 Box Score / Game Log The loss dropped the Gold team to 9-7. Although they trailed 6-0 early and never really threatened the Padres, Gold had solid traffic throughout: 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, 10 men left-on-base. They left men on base in every inning of the 7-inning contest. Starting 20-year old RHP Domingo Mejia had his shortest outing (2 innings, 5 runs, 4 hits, 3 walks, 2 Ks), then RHP Trevor Tietz didn’t fare much better (2 innings, 2 runs, 3 hits, 2 walks, 2 Ks). However, let’s give credit to 19-year old LHP Fraudy Maldonado, who covered 3 scoreless innings, conceding just 1 hit and no walks. Normally reliant on strikeouts (38 Ks in 26 1/3 career innings entering the game), he managed to get the job done without registering any K in this one. The 2019 international signee of the Mets never got to debut with them (2020 Covid wipeout, March 2021 release), so let’s hope he continues to show them what they’re missing. Offensively, 18-year old INF Jadher Areinamo has to feel good about the first homer of his minor league career, a solo shot in the seventh inning to raise his season OPS to .851. 18-year old OF Luis Castillo reached base twice (single, walk) to keep up his average (.407 this year) and OPS (1.153 this year). 19-year old INF Jesus Parra still has a troublesome BB/K ratio (3/14 this year; 4/35 last year), but the 2018 signing ($210k bonus) is seeing better results: .265 AVG / .333 OBP / .469 SLG. He doubled, singled and walked in a 2-for-3 effort in this game. 18-year old major 2021 signing SS Gregory Barrios picked up two singles to lift his season OPS to .685. 19-year old INF Jose Caballero went 0-for-2, but still reached base twice (walk, hit-by-pitch), so his season OPS didn’t suffer much (now .918).
  16. Nice to see Jhonny Severino starting to hit DSL pitching (homered last game; 4 hits today). I’m hoping that’s the last start RHP Kevin Briceno needs to make in DSL: 5 innings of 1-run, 1-hit, 9-K ball. He’s pitched 18 1/3 innings (1.96 ERA), which was enough for Edwin Jimenez and Miguel Segura to earn similar promotions to Arizona last year.
  17. - INF/OF Pablo Reyes optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers This is likely the move that frees a space for Kolten Wong. Expect a pitcher to also be optioned tomorrow for Brandon Woodruff.
  18. Biloxi walked off Pensacola 9-8 with a 3-run double to end it. Nashville gave up a late lead, but prevailed in 11 innings. Wisconsin grabbed the lead in the 8th to win 6-5. Carolina’s offense woke up too late to avoid a series sweep. Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic Biloxi walked off Pensacola 9-8 with a 3-run double to end it. Nashville gave up a late lead, but prevailed in 11 innings. Wisconsin grabbed the lead in the 8th to win 6-5. Carolina’s offense woke up too late to avoid a series sweep. Sunday was a day for the hitters, with a combined 57 runs scored on 79 hits across the four full season affiliate games. Thankfully, the clutch hitting came from the Brewers’ squads, as Wisconsin, Biloxi and Nashville picked up three one-run victories, despite being outhit 35 to 28 in their three contests. Jason Lopez came through with the 9th inning, 2-out, bases clearing double to enable Biloxi snatch a victory from Pensacola, giving Biloxi a satisfying 4-2 series win. In Nashville, it was Brice Turang’s turn to play hero, with a game-winning, 2-out RBI single in the 11th inning. Kudos to relievers Connor Sadzeck and Lucas Erceg for impeccable work in extras. Wisconsin wasn’t fazed by a late deficit, tying the game in the 7th inning, then getting 2-out hits in the bottom of the 8th inning from Tristan Peters and Zavier Warren to grab a lead which is always safe in closer Cam Robinson’s hands. The Mudcats offense was missing for the first of the game, but homers from Jheremy Vargas, Jackson Chourio and Hedbert Perez made the final scoreline look more respectable. Sunday’s Game Balls go to the aforementioned Peters, Lopez, Turang, Vargas and Arbert Cipion. Transactions: INF/OF Pablo Reyes recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville (replacing OF Hunter Renfroe, who was placed on 10-day injured list, retroactive to 6/23, with a left calf strain) Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Down East 7, Carolina 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Carolina Swept in Kinston Despite Hitting Three Homers Carolina had started the week trying to hold onto a first half division title, but instead lost six straight games at Down East, mainly weighed down by relatively absent offense. After being 1-hit in Saturday’s loss, the Mudcats were down 4-0 in this game before collecting their first hit in the 5th inning. Thankfully, that hit was a Jheremy Vargas 2-run homer. Semi-slumping super prospect Jackson Chourio then collected the team’s second hit via a solo shot in the 6th inning, momentarily cutting the deficit to 5-3. It was not until the 9th inning that the Mudcats collected their third and fourth hits, with a Hedbert Perez 2-run, 2-out homer making the final scoreline 7-5. 23-year old RHP Brannon Jordan has yet to adjust to work as a reliever (3.64 ERA with 38 Ks in 29 2/3 innings of long work; 4.73 ERA with 13 Ks in 13 1/3 innings of short work). At least RHP Michele Vassalotti looks back to full form, striking out both batters he faced. Performances of Note: Jheremy Vargas – 1-2, HR, walk, 2 RBIs, SB Hedbert Perez – 1-4, HR, 2 RBIs Jackson Chourio – 1-4, HR, RBI Jeferson Quero – 1-4, double Edwin Jimenez (Loss) – 3 2/3 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 3 Ks Michele Vassalotti – 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Next week’s outlook: Carolina (34-35) will be home hosting Fayetteville (32-36) this week. Expect dominant RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez to start the opener. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 6, Quad Cities 5 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, rainout details: Rattlers Make It Five Wins in a Row Youtube highlights from Wisconsin’s exceptional media team: This was an entertaining back-and-forth contest in Appleton, as starting LHP Russell Smith returned from a 3-week absence and MLB rehabber Kolten Wong gave the offense a boost with a first inning home run. Wong is expected back with the Brewers on Tuesday this week. Dependable Tristan Peters homered to re-claim the lead in the 4th inning at 3-2, but Quad Cities took it back 4-3 with two runs in the 5th inning, then a solo shot in the 7th inning for a 5-4 advantage. Arbert Cipion then singled, stole second base and third base, then scored on a Tyler Black sacrifice fly to knot the game back up 5-5 in the bottom of the 7th inning. With 2 outs in the 8th inning, Peters doubled, then scored on a Zavier Warren single to grab the late lead 6-5. I don’t think it’s much of a limb to claim that Cam Robinson’s 17th save leads the entire minor league system. He pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to send the crowd home happy. The win was Wisconsin’s 5th in a row, as they defeated Quad Cities 5-1 in the series. Performances of Note: Arbert Cipion – 3-3, RBI, 3 SBs Tristan Peters – 2-4, HR, double, RBI Kolten Wong – 1-2, HR, walk, RBI Ethan Murray – 1-4, triple Zavier Warren – 1-4, RBI Russell Smith – 3 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Christian Tripp – 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K Joey Matulovich (Win) – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K Cam Robinson (Save) – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Next week’s outlook: Wisconsin (39-29) will be home against a terrific Cedar Rapids (44-25) squad this week. Expect RHP Zach Mort to make his third start of the year in the opening game. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 9, Pensacola 8 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Lopez' Walk-Off Double Caps Largest Comeback In Shuckers' History This was not RHP Noah Zavolas’ best game, though I’m sure he’ll re-set and return stronger than ever next week. Blue Wahoo Griffin got him with a 1st inning solo shot, then a 4th inning 3-run blast, as the Shuckers trailed early 7-2. The game was 8-3 in the 6th inning, as RHP JT Hintzen entered with 1-on and 1-out. Hintzen coolly dispatched the dangerous Conine and another batter, then pitched a clean 7th inning to at least give the Shuckers a long-shot chance. From that point, it was clutch city for Biloxi, as Jakson Reetz and Yeison Coca knocked in three runs with two outs in the 7th inning to make the game interesting at 8-6. Then again with 2 outs, this time still down 8-6 in the 9th inning, Jason Lopez collected his first hit of the game via a game-winning, bases clearing double to left field. Although Pensacola won the first half division title, the Shuckers won this week’s series 4-2. And since no Biloxi game is complete without a Joey Wiemer highlight, here he is gunning down a Blue Wahoo at third base for his 10th assist of the year! Performances of Note: Thomas Dillard – 3-4, HBP, RBI Jakson Reetz – 2-3, double, 2 walks, 2 RBIs Jason Lopez – 1-3, double, 2 walks, 3 RBIs Cam Devanney – 1-3, double, walk, RBI Terence Doston – 1-3, walk, SB Joey Wiemer – 1-4, HBP Noah Zavolas – 4 IP, 7 R, 8 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 2 Ks JT Hintzen – 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 WP, 2 Ks Robbie Hitt – 1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Nash Walters (Win) – 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 1 K Next week’s outlook: Biloxi (34-33) gets to face the Mississippi Braves (29-40) at home this week. Expect RHPs Justin Bullock and Carlos Luna to tag-team the opening game. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 9, Gwinnett 8 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Brice Turang Delivers Walk-off for Nashville With such a talented and overflowing roster, Nashville decided to let this game go to extra innings, thus giving their excellent bullpen a bit more work and opportunity to shine. Starting RHP Josh Lindblom wasn’t able to put together a third consecutive strong start, as the team fell behind 5-2 in his four innings of work. Jon Singleton had contributed one of those Sounds’ runs with this loud shot: Nonetheless, the Sounds’ offense got him off the hook quickly with Mario Feliciano hitting a 2-run homer in the 4th inning (second of the year), then Mr. Contributor David Dahl collecting an RBI single to tie it 5-5 in the 5th inning. Recently-optioned Mark Mathias then gave the game a real jolt with a 2-out, 3-run 7th inning homer to put the squad up 8-5, which many families probably thought was enough to ice the win. Unfortunately, RHP Zack Brown continued his relatively difficult month of June by giving up a game-tying 2-run homer to Alex Dickerson, so to extra innings the Stripers and Sounds went. RHP Connor Sadzeck was lights out, leaving Manfred’s ghost at second base in the 10th inning, but Gwinnett’s Chadwick Tromp was equal to the task as all three Sounds struck out in the bottom half of the inning. In the 11th inning, RHP Lucas Erceg kept the ghost from scoring, getting a strike out and fly out to leave the runner at third base. Then in the bottom of the inning, super prospect Brice Turang collected his third hit of the night, this one a game-winning, 2-out RBI single to left field. Newcomers RHP Marcus Walden and 3B Patrick Dorrian both got plenty of work in their debuts, with Walden covering 3 innings in the bullpen and Dorrian earning a walk in one of his five plate appearances. Performances of Note: Brice Turang – 3-5, walk, RBI, SB Pedro Severino – 2-5, double, RBI David Dahl – 2-5, RBI, SB Mark Mathias – 1-5, HR, 3 RBIs Mario Feliciano – 1-5, HR, 2 RBIs Jon Singleton – 1-4, HR, walk, RBI Josh Lindblom – 4 IP, 5 R, 8 H, 2 BB, 5 Ks Andy Otero – 1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 0 K Marcus Walden – 3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 Ks Connor Sadzeck – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Lucas Erceg (Win) – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K Next week’s outlook: Nashville (43-28) will also be home this week, facing the Indianapolis Indians (35-35). 21. AAA Nashville can also win its series 4-2 with a victory tonight at home against Gwinnett. RHP Josh Lindblom (last 12 innings: 1 earned run) gets the start. The offense welcomes newcomer 3B Patrick Dorrian, along with 2B Mark Mathias’ return from the Show:
  22. AA Biloxi hands the ball to RHP Noah Zavolas (3.04 ERA over last 4 starts) today, at they aim to win their series 4-2 at home over Pensacola. SS Cam Devanney’s hitting streak is now 18 games:
  23. The Wisconsin-Quad Cities game is entertaining for the fans, with runs scored every inning through the first 5 innings. It’s 4-4 with homers from Kolten Wong, Tristan Peters and a 2-run shot for Quad Cities.
  24. The Mudcats were 1-hit yesterday and appeared to be following the same game plan today, with no hits through 4 2/3 innings. But Jheremy Vargas made the first hit count with a 2-run homer. Then Jackson Chourio followed with a homer the next inning. Those blasts only cut the deficit to 5-3, however. And a Hedbert Perez 2-run 9th inning home run simply made the final score look less one-sided at 7-5. That’s a 6-game sweep for Down East over Carolina, who’d started the week trying to hang onto the first half division title. Shoot!!!
  25. High-A Wisconsin is on a 4-game winning streak at home against Quad Cities and welcomes LHP Russell Smith (5.49 ERA in 39 1/3 innings) back for his first action since June 7.
