  1. Boy, the breaking in of RHPs Noah Zavolas (AA Biloxi) and Alec Bettinger (AAA Nashville) after missing the first month of the season is a bit tough to stomach, though we understand it's necessary to give them time. Here's how they did today, with both somewhat shockingly being sent out to attempt to cover the 4th inning: Zavolas (85 pitches, 47 strikes) - 3 2/3 IP, 6 R, 6 H, 4 BB, 2 WP, 4 Ks Bettinger (64 pitches, 43 strikes) - 3 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 8 H, 2 BB, 1 K Thankfully, the Biloxi and Nashville offenses both came to play today: Biloxi trails 6-5 in the 4th inning Nashville is tied 4-4 after 4 innings
  2. AAA Nashville needs a win tonight to split their series 3-3 in Toledo. RHP Alec Bettinger (7.88 ERA, 1.88 WHIP, 5.6 K/9 in 8 innings) gets the start in his 4th appearance of 2022. CF Jonathan Davis (.840 OPS in 116 plate appearances) is riding a 12-game on-base streak:
  3. AA Biloxi has won 3 in a row at home against Montgomery and send RHP Noah Zavolas (7.71 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, 7.7 K/9 in 7 innings) for his third start of the season. RF Joey Wiemer (.976 OPS in 186 plate appearances) has reached base in his last 8 games, homering in 3 of them:
  4. OF/IF Noah Campbell activated from AA Biloxi's 7-day injured list.
  5. Back-to-back homers by Tyler Black and Carlos D. Rodriguez in the 2nd inning have extended Wisconsin's early lead in Cedar Rapids to 3-0.
  6. Jackson Chourio knocked in 2 more runs that inning with a single. It's 8-2 Mudcats. Willy Adames walked in his 3rd plate appearance and exited the game, which I'm assuming was the plan. RHP Michele Vassalotti has relieved Fernando Olguin, who settled down nicely to cover 4 2/3 innings overall.
  7. 3B Luis Silva is manning up: Game-tying RBI single in the final inning last night Bases-clearing double in the 4th inning to give Carolina a 6-2 lead today
  8. After being called out on strikes his first time up, Willy Adames blasted the first pitch he saw in the 3rd inning to right field. The 2-run shot gives Carolina a 3-2 lead.
  9. The Cannon Ballers jumped on Carolina early with 2 first inning runs, with the key hit being a double by the White Sox's top-ranked prospect, SS Colson Montgomery. The Mudcats clawed 1 run back in the 2nd inning, as Jackson Chourio reached on an infield single and scored on a Jesus Chirinos RBI groundout. Carolina trails 2-1.
  10. The Timber Rattlers trail their series at first place Cedar Rapids 3-2, so need a win today to salvage a split for the week. RHP Ryne Moore gets the start, looking for his early season magic (2.31 ERA with Low-A Carolina, 16.71 ERA with High-A Wisconsin). C Wes Clarke smacked his 5th home run of the year yesterday and has an 8-game on-base streak:
  11. Low-A Carolina aims to close out a 5-1 series victory over Kannapolis at home, with RHP Fernando Olguin looking to overcome a rough start earlier in the week (3 IP, 8 R, 6 ER, 6 H, 5 BB, 3 Ks). Yesterday's walk-off hero LF Oswel Leones is batting 3rd, while some guy named Willy Adames is manning the DH spot:
  12. Despite losing the first game of today's doubleheader, Carolina can still clinch a series victory at home over Kannapolis with a win in the Game 2 nightcap. RHP Edwin Jimenez is coming off two rough appearances (9 IP, 8 ER, 10 H, 6 BB, 9 Ks), so aiming to right his ship. SS Eduardo Garcia has hit safely in 9 of his last 10 games to boost his season slash (.278 AVG, .310 OBP, .383 SLG): 1 - Oswel Leones - LF 2 - Hendry Mendez - RF 3 - Eduardo Garcia - SS 4 - Jackson Chourio - DH 5 - Jeferson Quero - C 6 - Hedbert Perez - CF 7 - Jesus Chirinos - 1B 8 - Zack Raabe - 2B 9 - Luis Silva - 3B X - Edwin Jimenez - P
  13. Suddenly in a 3-game losing streak, AAA Nashville needs a victory tonight to have any hope of salvaging a 3-3 series split in Toledo. Hortonville-born RHP Caleb Boushley (4.23 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 7.5 K/9 in 44 2/3 innings) is set for his 10th start of the season. SS Brice Turang has hit safely in 9 of his last 10 games:
  14. As a few teams have discovered, the 2022 Carolina Mudcats never give up. Game 1 of today was another example, with the team scoring 3 runs in the bottom half of 7th and final inning (RBI singles by Jesus Chirinos, Eduardo Garcia, Jackson Chourio), bringing the potential game-tying run to the plate. They've unfortunately dropped this game 7-4, but will try to carry the late momentum into Game 2 of today's doubleheader.
  15. Biloxi aims for a 3rd straight win at home against Montgomery, with stud RHP Victor Castaneda (2.58 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 9.6 K/9 in 38 1/3 innings) on the bump tonight. CF Sal Frelick will try for his 6th-straight multi-hit game (11-for-25 over last 5 games):
  16. Cruz gathered himself nicely, getting the last 3 hitters out (2 Ks, ground out). He exits after 4 innings and 77 pitches. LHP Karlos Morales is on for the 5th inning. Carolina trails 6-0 and still has only 1 hit.
  17. Cruz gives up 2 more home runs to start the 4th inning. That's 6 runs on 6 hits, 5 of which were homers. Ugh.
  18. Two more Kannapolis home runs in the 3rd inning have the Mudcats trailing 4-0.
  19. Stiven Cruz had a clean first inning (2 Ks), but gave up his first run of 2022 via homer in the 2nd inning. Carolina's managed one hit (Eduardo Garcia single) but no runs thus far. 1-0 Cannon Ballers lead.
  20. After alternating victories in the first 4 games of this week's series in Cedar Rapids, Wisconsin can forge a tie for first place with a victory tonight. LHP Antoine Kelly is seeking a win and his 3rd double-digit strikeout game of the month (10 on May 5th, 13 on May 22nd). LF Carlos D. Rodriguez has reached base in 8 consecutive games to lift his season OPS to .751:
  21. Apparently those are balls if you throw them in the exact same location to Corey Dickerson. Or maybe the umpire just had something in his eye in the Brewers' half of the inning and it's cleared now.
  22. So that's 4 called strikes well outside the zone this inning, right? One to Hiura, one to Cain, two to Mathias.
  23. Carolina has won 3 straight this week at home against Kannapolis and has a doubleheader today (each a 7 inning game), with RHP Stiven Cruz (0.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 14.1 K/9 in 7 innings) making his 3rd start of 2022 in today's opening game. CF Jackson Chourio had the game-winning, 11th inning hit on Thursday night and comes in with an 11-game on-base streak:
  24. - RHP Zach Vennaro assigned to AAA Nashville from AA Biloxi
