1. Cooper Hummel makes his 2021 debut as the Sounds go for their 11th (yes 11th!) consecutive victory: 1 - Lopes - 2B 2 - Hager - SS 3 - Taylor - LF 4 - Green - 3B 5 - Ray - CF 6 - Wilson - 1B 7 - Maile - C 8 - Cozens - RF 9 - Hummel - DH X - Ashby - P
2. Three moves today: - LHP Nick Bennett promoted from Wisconsin to Biloxi - RHP Bowden Francis promoted from Biloxi to Nashville - RHP Alec Bettinger recalled to MLB Brewers from Nashville for the Brewers’ doubleheader
3. The Timber Rattlers go for a third straight win in Game One of today's doubleheader: 1 - Hamilton - SS 2 - Howell - CF 3 - Ward - DH 4 - G. García - 1B 5 - Cantrelle - 2B 6 - L. Castillo - LF 7 - Coca - 3B 8 - Rios - C 9 - McClanahan - RF X - F. Adames - SP From @CMehring on Twitter Slipping the lineup for Game Two in here: 1 - Hamilton - SS 2 - Howell - CF 3 - Ward - DH 4 - G. García - 3B 5 - Dillard - C 6 - Rodriguez - LF 7 - Cantrelle - 2B 8 - Lujano - RF 9 - McClanahan - 1B X - Sierra - SP
4. The Mudcats go for their fifth straight win, led as usual by the awesome trio of Ernesto Martinez (1.054 OPS, 5 HR, 14 RBI, 7 SB), Joe Gray (.844 OPS, 5 HR, 23 RBI, 6 SB) and Gabe Holt (.753 OPS, 14 RBI, 3 SB, 17/12 BB/K):
5. Yeah, along with those 17 and Drew Smith, I've got 8 players who weren't listed at MILB Spring Training but also appear to still be active: - IF Luis Silva (177 PAs in AZL), Alberis Ferrer (DSL since 2018) - 1B/OF - YongKang Kou (101 PAs in AZL), Erys Bautista (2019 DSL, $500k sign-on), Juan Frias (DSL since 2018) - OF Abimael Gonzalez (2019 37th round), Oswel Leones (164 PAs in AZL), Jhonny David (DSL since 2018)
6. Thanks. I was looking at the player list today and agree that there aren't nearly enough arms available for two AZL teams. But I also noted about 26 position players who need a home at AZL (assuming top-rated young guys like Quero, Medina, etc. don't get sent to the DSL) or perhaps an exit. I'll be pulling for guys like Eduarqui Fernandez and Reidy Mercado to make an early jump to Carolina.
7. Jesus Castillo makes his first official start in the Brewers' system and Hernan Perez is back in the lineup as the Nashville Sounds aim to extend their winning streak to 10 games: 1 - Lopes - DH 2 - Perez - 3B 3 - D. Peterson - LF 4 - Green - 1B 5 - Taylor - CF 6 - Hager - SS 7 - Wilson - 2B 8 - Cozens - RF 9 - Maile - C X - J. Castillo - P
8. Noah Zavolas seeks a second consecutive winning start for the Shuckers: 1 - Lutz - CF 2 - Turang - SS 3 - Westbrook - 3B 4 - Erceg - DH 5 - Henry - C 6 - Longo - LF 7 - Spanberger - RF 8 - Friis - 2B 9 - Aguilar - 1B X - Zavolas - P
9. The Timber Rattlers try to make it two in a row over the Kernels: 1 - Hamilton - SS 2 - Howell - CF 3 - Cantrelle - 2B 4 - Ward - DH 5 - Dillard - 1B 6 - Rodríguez - RF 7 - Lujano - LF 8 - Kahle - C 9 - Coca - 3B X - Castañeda - SP From @CMehring on Twitter
10. Shortstop Freddy Zamora is back as the Mudcats go for their 4th straight win:
11. Three announced moves today, plus two injury updates (from roster pages) and a possible injury note: RHP Jake Cousins moves up to @nashvillesounds RHP Luis Contreras placed on the 7-day IL with @BiloxiShuckers RHP Josh Lindblom has been outrighted to Triple-A Nashville RHP Bryce Milligan moved to 60-day injured list OF Alejandro Marte moved to 60-day injured list Team USA's pitching staff is still a bit in flux... Scioscia says Clayton Andrews' elbow is "not where it needs to be."
12. I do not know if MKE is fielding a 2nd team on its own or sharing a team with someone else. A few days ago, Mass Haas mentioned that we're sharing a DSL team with Toronto this year, as newly signed Fraudy Maldonado was assigned there. https://www.milb.com/player/fraudy-maldonado-691699 Also, I'm hoping that those saying that we'll only have 1 AZL team turn out to be wrong, but I guess we'll just have to see. We cut deep enough last year that we've actually been adding a number of players recently, which is a heckuva lot more enjoyable than letting guys go.
13. The short-handed Shuckers are underway at home in Biloxi against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos: 1 - Lutz - CF 2 - Turang - SS 3 - Westbrook - LF 4 - Erceg - DH 5 - Fry - 1B 6 - Spanberger - RF 7 - Devanney - 3B 8 - Friis - 2B 9 - Diaz - C X - Crawford - P
14. Joe Gray and Ernesto Martinez continue their home run duel (5 each thus far, in 19 and 16 games, respectively), as the Mudcats seek a 3rd straight victory:
15. Jake Hager is back in the Milwaukee system, making his debut with the Nashville Sounds, as the team seeks its 9th consecutive win:
16. We've basically got daily transaction updates by this point. Here's from today: LHP Wade LeBlanc (Nashville Sounds) has exercised his release clause and is now a free agent. LHP Leo Crawford has been reinstated from the Development List with @BiloxiShuckers RHP Nathan Patterson (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) has retired.
17. Daniel Castillo has no intention of going back to the Arizona Complex, from the looks of it The age cascade probably doesn't mean much, but it encourages me to temper expectations for our youngest players, none of whom appear overwhelmed for their level: Born 2001 - Low-A Carolina - Juan Geraldo, Darrien Miller, Daniel Castillo Born 2000 - High-A Wisconsin - Carlos Rodriguez, Justin Jarvis Born 1999 - Double A Biloxi - Brice Turang Born 1998 - Triple A Nashville - Mario Feliciano, Aaron Ashby Born 1997 - MLB Milwaukee - Luis Urias
18. The Biloxi Shuckers look turn the tide on Pensacola in the second game of their 6-game series: 1 - Lutz - RF 2 - Turang - SS 3 - Westbrook - LF 4 - Henry - C 5 - Fry - 1B 6 - Spanberger - DH 7 - Devanney - 3B 8 - Friis - 2B 9 - Aguilar - CF X - Small - P
19. The Timber Rattlers try to end their 2-game skid, while Zach Mort makes his 4th start, though still in search of his first victory (3.38 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 7.4 K/9 in 13.1 innings this season): 1 - Ward - DH 2 - Howell - CF 3 - Hamilton - SS 4 - Garcia - 1B 5 - Cantrelle - 2B 6 - L. Castillo - LF 7 - Rodriguez - RF 8 - Rios - C 9 - Coca - 3B X - Mort - P Info per Chris Mehring:
20. The Nashville Sounds seek to win their 8th game in a row, with lefty Blaine Hardy taking the mound (3.18 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 10.3 K/9 in 11.1 innings this year): 1 - Reyes - 2B 2 - Lopes - LF 3 - D. Peterson - DH 4 - Green - 3B 5 - Perez - SS 6 - Ray - CF 7 - Wilson - 1B 8 - Cozens - RF 9 - Maile - C X - Hardy - P
21. After the big 23-7 victory yesterday, Joey Matulovich makes his first start of 2021 for Carolina. He's been dominant thus far in relief (2.53 ERA, 0.66 WHIP, 19.4 K/9 in 10.2 innings):
22. Moves from the MILB team roster pages: - RHP Caden Lemons to Carolina's 7-day injured list - IF Luis Castro to Biloxi's Temporary Inactive List - OF Alexander Palma to Biloxi's Temporary Inactive List I'm probably wrong, but could Luis Castro, Alexander Palma (and Harold Chirino, though that's even more of a stretch) be trying to make the Venezuelan Olympic Qualifying Roster? And in MLB moves impacting the minors: - LHP Eric Lauer called up from AAA Nashville to MLB - IF/OF Jace Peterson outrighted to AAA Nashville
23. The 8-10 Wisconsin Timber Rattlers go on the road to commence their series against the equally 8-10 Cedar Rapids Kernels: 1 - Howell - CF 2 - Cantrelle - 2B 3 - Hamilton - SS 4 - Dillard - 1B 5 - Lujano - RF 6 - Kahle - C 7 - Ward - DH 8 - Coca - 3B 9 - McClanahan - LF X - Olson - P
24. I think the only reference that we have to Hummel's injury is from this article, which I can't see (paywall): https://theathletic.com/2567421/2021/05/04/brewers-put-christian-yelich-right-back-on-the-injured-list-we-need-to-get-some-better-answers/ Let's hope he plays well now that he's active again and gets his first taste of AAA-level ball.
25. The 8-10 Biloxi Shuckers have returned home to start a 6-game series against the 11-7 Pensacola Blue Wahoos, as Bowden Francis goes for his 4th consecutive victory: 1 - Lutz - RF 2 - Turang - SS 3 - Westbrook - 3B 4 - Erceg - DH 5 - Henry - C 6 - Longo - LF 7 - Spanberger - 1B 8 - Devanney - 2B 9 - Aguilar - CF X - Francis - P
