Trade deadline day thread
Jim French Stepstool replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
If Preller was the GM for a market like Milwaukees', that's exactly what he'd do. Screw the future. Of course I don't see how he'd ever want a job in a market this size. -
This won't be a sexy move if it were made, but since the Pirates seem to be willing to unload I'd like to check in on Kiner-Falefa. He would be an upgrade over Monasterio & he can actually play SS. Whenever Ortiz isn't out there---whether it's sitting a few days, being PH for, or whatever---it seems pretty apparent they don't want to shift Turang there in-season, Seigler is not a SS, and even though they put him there late today neither is Durbin.
-
Shaw playing 2B in '18 was in the era of the drastic shifting, so it was much easier to play him there when his range wasn't nearly as big of a factor. Potentially I think it could be quite a downgrade defensively, yes. You'd be replacing a platinum glove winning 2B with someone who hasn't played there all season, and IMO no matter how Turang performs at SS it would be hard to match the level Ortiz is playing at. Yes, they value versatility. But they greatly value run prevention too, and it's gotten them to something like a 97-win pace. It would be kind of like robbing Peter to pay Paul, and I just don't see them doing that. Certainly can't defend Ortiz on the offensive end though. He seemed to be finding it, then lost it again just as quickly.

This. IMO there's no way they play musical chairs like that, two-thirds of the way into a contending season. Yet it continues to be proposed. I'd acknowledge it could happen in an off-season, but even then I'd think Durbin to 2B & Turang to SS is much more likely. To me Collins profiles as a much, much better OFer than a 2B.

One thing I love about Murphys' pressers is how he has a knack for pointing out good performances that aren't always noticed. Three very good ABs tonite between Durbin & Seigler. Seigler seemed a little miffed that he didn't go home in the 2nd inning on the ground ball, but probably made the correct decision. Grown-man stuff by Priester getting through 5.2 innings w/o caving. If anyone had told me he'd display that kind of resolve after seeing his first 3-4 outings after being picked up I wouldn't have believed it. Just so much growth. A perfect snapshot & camera angle after the Vaughn HR. The swing, the contact, the fans behind the 3rd base dugout getting excited. And in the background, a certain someone reaching to make a phone call.

I wasn't as over-the-moon as some people were about Haase, but he was a good backup & a good soldier. His being DFA'd WAS harsh. It can be a harsh business sometimes. As long as he isn't wearing an opponents' uni, he's one of those guys you wish all the best to. I believe, as others have said, that Jansen is an upgrade. What it probably boils down to, is we have no idea if Contreras takes one too many on the hand, aggravates it on a slide or a swing or something, and we need to look to someone else to catch every day, or half the time, or whatever. In that case Jansen getting regular ABs & innings is probably preferable to Haase. I guess that's why we (IMO) overpaid a little w/Areinamo. It's a residual effect of Quero missing over a full season of development.
-
Along with O'Hearn, this is the other guy whose acquisition wouldn't surprise me.
-
IMO, Turang moving to SS today was simply a byproduct of the late inning moves, that Murphy wanted to hold back Monasterio to run for Vaughn if need be, Monasterio was the last person on the bench who's been used at 1B, and Frelick was apparently off-limits.
-
I have no problem believing that those three names were mentioned. But ALL THREE of them going in a Suarez deal doesn't seem likely. I love Adamczewski. But we all know how run prevention is held in high esteem around here and Pratt, Arienamo & Pena all have him aced out in that category (Made has had struggles but hasn't found a primary home yet & isn't going anywhere anyhow). My way-too-early prediction is Josh finds a home in LF some day. I'm fully on board with @Brewcrew82, that if this gets serious you try to swap in Myers for Henderson, or Patrick + a pitcher a little more fringy in Hendersons' place.
-
This is quite interesting. I'm sure there have been eyeballs on him in his rehab starts, and he's had enough of an MLB resume to attract interest as long as his health is confirmed (four rehabs should prove that). I would think if he's dealt, it would be as a sweetener to acquire immediate help, but that would be tricky since you're making a contender-to-contender deal. But if we've learned anything in recent deadlines it's that: 1) There are always surprises, and 2) Preller wants to acquire everyone.

Contreras (before this series) seemed to be coming out of the funk a little. He's been drawing walks pretty much all year, and at least has shown the tendency to hit behind runners. I think these are the main reasons why he's usually still at #2. Someone like Durbin looks like a fit there, but for a kid who has had success hitting 7 & 8 in his first taste of MLB, often the smart money says leave him be. No denying though, it was an ugly series for him at the plate.

Glad the season series is over. This Marlins team is a major pain in the arse, and some of the ball-strike calls didn't make it any easier. Kudos to Ashby for overcoming the Miami bats & two umpires to throw a scoreless 7th. Felt bad for Durbin. struck out (iirc) twice to begin his day, then in the 1st & 3rd w/one out didn't want (understandably, I guess) to go deep in the count again. Looked to go the other way, and got a first pitch that was perfect for that very thing. Pulled-in INF so they had little range to either side. One-hopper right at the 2B. Until the last couple innings it was that kind of day. I've never seen anything like Chourio, in that he can be so very dangerous, get his hits & yet still be so incomplete as a player. Still chases waaay too much, but easily our most productive guy right now. It's like viewing a Rembrandt that hasn't had the borders painted in yet. I think the long-term deal we signed him to might be the best money the team has spent since Inking Dalton & Bamberger after the '77 season. Andrew Vaughn is hitting the ball hard while striking out only six times in just short of 50 PAs. Guys have sometimes simply gotten hot after joining a new team, but boy would it be nice if something was actually unlocked here. Alumni weekend is over, right? Burn those caps. I'm done feeling like I'm pulling for Juwan Howard & Bo Schembechler.

When does Arnold start to receive some criticism
Jim French Stepstool replied to brewers888's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
That's been the trend in recent years among some fans, regardless of the sport. There's the team that wins it all, the runner-up, and maybe two or three others. Everyone else is 'mediocre', or 'sucks'. -

Dude, I salute you for being a passionate fan, I really do. But I've been on this board for quite some time & the above doesn't even come close to describing the folks on here. You have a vision of how this thing should be run. The organization & most of the people on here have a different one. Dat's life. -

But.....but.....Ryan Dempster & Kevin Millahhhhh didn't fawn over it obsessively. It didn't happen on the last day of July, with the clock running. It didn't MOVE THE NEEDLE!!!!!!! -

Oh, but wouldn't the world be an easier place to live in if baseball players were conveniently shoehorned into various categories. There's the "That's IT? Wow, Attanasio is a real cheapass" group. In the next department over, we have the "They should've done more, we need at least TWO bats!!!!" guys. A couple floors up, with the ESPN & MLB Network cameras rolling, we can peruse the "GOING FOR IT!!!!!" players, followed by a trip to the top floor & the "MOVE THE NEEDLE!!!" merchandise. Truth be known they've been one of, if not the best run organization you can find anywhere. And those who don't think we spend prospect capital haven't been paying attention. But one thing this team will never do, even with a deep system, is overpay in a trade. It would be an easy mistake to make when you're competing at the trade deadline with a lot of folks who will gladly empty out the upper levels of their prospect list because they can just write checks to fill holes every off-season. What I'd love to see, is some of these big-market FO's have to make decisions while living in the world the Brewers live in. -
Well, at least the "we need a bat!!! we need TWO bats!!!!!" mantra doesn't apply tonight. Not saying I don't want the offense upgraded but the reason we lost tonite wasn't that we didn't score eight, it's because we gave up seven. Eleven hits can usually lead to a win from this team but not tonight. I thought we chased too much, but it probably looked worse than it was in comparison because Miami was ridiculously good in their plate discipline, for the second game in a row. It was as if they hopped into a Delorean & had a future screen shot of every pitch 10 seconds before it was thrown, so they could look at the location & decide if they wanted to lay off. RBI double notwithstanding, Turang needs to be better on both ends. Critical error & two flat out lousy ABs. What this team can accomplish hasn't been changed one iota by the last two games. Oversimplification I guess, but PLAY BETTER.
