  1. Contusion, which is what I expected when he was allowed to run the foul line. Murphy said he probably isn't playing tomorrow.
  2. I thought the top of the 2nd inning was key. After the Jansen double, Ortiz put up a very strange AB. Battled, saw a lot of pitches, but on his way to 3-2 swung at one or two that were not close, then took one right down the middle for the K. For those who wonder about him sometimes getting PH for--it seems like Murphy just doesn't trust his approach, and it's something he certainly needs to improve. Then Frelick rips one, but right at Busch. After that Taillon really settled in. A guy that was making his 1st start in a long time was at 49 pitches through two then just flipped a switch. And Woodruff was curiously off with the command & really felt the need to lean on the changeup. Didn't scroll back (yet) but I hope no one was complaining about the Turang tag up. There are scenarios where you don't go----If Martin Maldonado was the runner at 3rd, or if there's no one out, or if the RF is Clemente. All season we've forced people to make plays. They often don't. This time Castro uncorked a good one. For the rest of this season & if it's a proper situation, any opponent capable of laying down a bunt that doesn't make Aaron Ashby field & throw is just lazy or has a lousy advance scout.
  3. Or when Bill Schroeder says "Not even close". He's not being used on a regular basis anymore though, so if you're big on inebriation it might not work.
  4. I thought he had issues settling in, but overall Patrick gave you about what you could hope for from a spot starter who hasn't been up in awhile & has been getting cuffed around recently in N'Ville. Dillard mentioned the two walks to Suzuki, which weren't headliners but cost him maybe much more than the two runs Suzuki wound up scoring. And the error, of course, which was on Vaughn but maybe to me a 75-25% thing. A poor feed but not one that's impossible to catch. The plate discipline vs Boyd wasn't bad, but especially good in the 2nd inning. I like them having to go to their BP for 3.2 with another game to play. And he's the enemy now, but you really have to give it to Pomeranz for coming all the way back at this stage in his career. A kid with not much of a 'book' on him hit an opposite-field HR today. His 1st in the big leagues. Wrapped around three Ks in the inning. I wouldn't be too quick to jump on Shelby Miller.
  5. Of the top ten reasons for playing splitters, that's #s one through ten.
  6. Also for anyone interested CC said after game 1 that Kyle Tucker would be sitting tonight. Sounds like it may be for more than one day, too.
  7. I agree with this. Everyone on Sunday was talking about the BP being Myers, Anderson, and ???????????. If they needed to use a 3rd arm I suspect it would've been Miller.
  8. Losing it like he did for 3-4 hitters then snapping right back is certainly worthy of some major maturity points. He's never screamed 'ace' to me but deserves major props. Next step (if he can attain it) is to make the 0-2, 1-2 pitches look more inviting to hitters w/o actually leaving them in the zone. That can be really tough to do. If he can then IMO it's lights out. He DOES do that sometimes with the FB just above the zone.
  9. Let's all just give CC time to settle down, take a few deep breaths, search the clubhouse for his copy of the Joe Madden Gamesmanship Manual (2nd edition) & make a decision.
  10. A friend of mine lives in the western suburbs near Dundee, and said shortly after game 1 ended the tornado sirens went off in their area. Unless they went off due to their being nine games back. I dunno. Dillard got off a great one late in the game today. There was mention of maybe calling off the nightcap & he said something like "But when would they reschedule it? In three years?"
  11. What I'm looking at this week is Yelich. How often do we get the hit-three-balls-hard Yelich, as opposed to the swing-at-any-breaking-ball-no-matter-where-it's-located-and-be-behind-on-fastballs Yelich? Seems lately it's one or the other. It's looking like he can be entrenched in the DH role now as we get back closer to full strength, which is good.
  12. I think they're not 100% certain that Dinges stays behind the plate. He might, but like with Adamczewski you just let them develop & the positional question sorts itself out. Yeah, his pop time is impressive & he's very athletic behind the dish.
  13. I think they wanted someone in the backup C spot who has been through the wars, given the potential for a lot of important baseball in the next couple months, and viewed Jansen as an upgrade from Haase. As to Quero, I haven't seen much of him this year but from what I understand post-injury his defensive & throw game isn't (for now anyway) where it once was. Hopefully he'll get back to his previous level or at least close. Personally I'd be disappointed if he isn't on the team next year. His offensive game seems to be solid.
  14. In the either-or, I'd rather not have Freidel vs a RHP so assumed he was just missing. But it sure seemed like a 'pitch around' AB so who knows?
  15. Murphy said postgame he just didn't want to use him & told him before the game. So apparently no issues
  16. Fair enough. I think it can be very disruptive, maybe moreso to an INF than a pitcher. The bunt by Perkins was certainly a decision that can be debated. Playing for one run definitely looks a lot tastier if you had Uribe or Megill in the arsenal, which they didn't.
  17. Yeah, it seems to be an emphasis. And that, in addition to the team speed & baserunning contributes to the 'luck' factor, as in "They've been really lucky w/all the oppositions' errors". Really, to me it's just another form of pressure. Knowing Ohtani is at the plate & can create an instant 480-ft highlight is pressure. So is planting an additional seed of thought in a defense. Depending on your skillset, I don't know if it's that much tougher than squaring up a pitch & finding a hole. So much of it is situational.
  18. When you include the seed planted in the heads of a defense & opposing pitcher in addition to the actual times they do it, I think it's been very significant.
  19. As per the presser, Murphy was going to Anderson in the 9th to get a ground ball. I'd have stayed with Myers, but none of this stuff is done on a coin flip. I questioned it at the time as Myers looked great, now I know the reason why he did it. But not a sharp day for Anderson. The four pitch walk ahead of Friedel kinda proved that. Abbott is awfully good.
  20. So he compromised the OF defense for the rest of the game. Not complaining, Black put up some VERY solid-looking PAs. It just doesn't sound like a Murphy-type of move to me. Lifting Ortiz surprised me a little, too. Yet everyone he pulled off the bench did some good to very, very good things. When you win 14 in a row you just bow to the button-pusher. I remembered the Vaughn bunt for the RBI earlier in the week and had a funny feeling he was going to push another one toward the right side w/1st & 2nd and no one out & a contact guy (Durbin) up next. Would've been far from conventional for a power hitter, but he's shown he can do it and really, being unconventional seems to be working these days.
