Brewers Acquire Bryan Hudson from Dodgers
JefferyLeonard replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I can give you two right off the top of my head...The 2021 Tampa bay Buccaneers and the 2022 LA Rams. Both teams made huge moves at the trade deadline, Made huge splashes in the offseason and didn't care or weren't worried about the future. They "went for it" and lo and behold..the most aggressive teams that year ending up with the trophy at the end of the year. Does that necessarily work in baseball? No, but you asked for examples of teams that didn't look towards the future. They didn't, and it paid off. Both teams had one down year in between, and both are right back to being in the playoffs and having a chance to win the trophy again. The Rams haven't had a first round pick in several years, or many draft picks to be exact. The Bucks are another example...they loaded up the year they won the title, and have ever since. They don't care if they have any draft picks in future years because they know the future means nothing if you don't capitalize on the "window(s)" you do have. They don't care what it costs, they are going to do whatever it takes to put them in the best position possible to win a title(s). I'm sure there are other examples, but those 3 come instantly to mind, and have all occurred in the last 3 years. Coincidence of a team(s) ignoring the future and it paying off? Once is an accident, twice is a mistake, three times is a trend. -

I live in the here and now, and don't worry about the future until it gets here. It's unpredictable. Worry about 2025 2026 etc when they come. I think that way with all the teams I follow. No one knows what could/will/may happen in 2025, 2026 etc. So why even think about it? I honestly think that's where a lot of sports teams fail. They worry about/count on the future to be "when they really take off". Okay so what if that never happens? Then all the years you wasted trying to "look towards the future", were also failures. When you have a window(even if it's theoretical), to me you should be going for it every single time you are in that situation for however long that window may be. No hesitancy, no thinking "well if we do this now how does it affect future years", worry about that then. That's the right approach IMO. Not just with the Brewers or any MLB team, but football and NBA as well. Each year should be looked at individually and be focused on that. Stop worrying about a future that may never end up the way you want/hope. -

So, and I'm just asking...You would rather see then role with Monasterio at 3rd and Jake Bauers at 1st then say Matt Chapman at 3rd and Bauers at 1st, or Rhys Hoskins at first and Monasterio at 3rd? Or....OMG Hoskins at first and Chapman at 3rd? What sounds better to you? Be honest. You don't actually believe a corner of Hoskins and Chapman wouldn't out produce Monasterio and Bauers do you? I think too often in sports when big signings don't live up to their contracts per say, fans tend to be critical of that in a vacuum. There's some legitimacy to that. However, if we as fans would just take the blinders off sometimes and realize that "Ok, the guy we signed to a huge deal isn't producing at his normal levels, or what his contract would say he maybe should, he's still outproduced the previous options we had by a significant margin and that's lead to more wins etc". So maybe they are overpaid for what they are giving you on an individual basis, but if they are still significantly better than any other options you had, isn't that still better? Isn't that still improving the team? -

Oh here we go, This is like using the transitory property in sports...Team A, beat team B by xx so team C who beat team A should beat team B by xxx. It's laughable. Just because those guys didn't work out where they signed, is that a guarantee they wouldn't have worked out in Milwaukee? You can surmise that to be the case sure, but no one knows for sure. The thing is, you don't know unless you try, right? Their is no failure if there is no effort to even possibly fail. But...what if they did sign someone to a big deal and they won a world series because of it? Just a thought. -

And what if they do win big? Scared money don't make money. -
Brewers Acquire Bryan Hudson from Dodgers
JefferyLeonard replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
My point exactly...how in the hell did that trade do anything to improve the team? Take all the moves together this off season and if anything, you can make the argument they are a bit worse. They certainly aren't better. No amount of 1 year deal signings this off season will change that either. -

It may not signify they are cheap, but how the hell do moves like this make them better in any way? Isn't that the bottom line? Improving your ball club? How do any of the nothing deals they have done this off season thus far do anything to improve them? They don't. Good thing they don't have any black holes to fill on the roster(like1B and 3B most notably)...oh wait. Sure people can use the "who has signed anyone thus far besides the Dodgers" line, but just because no one else has, doesn't mean the Brewers couldn't have, right? There's a thing called being aggressive...something this FO is lacking, big time. -

Maybe you all are finally figuring out what some of us knew a long time ago. Mark A is cheap. Always has been, always will be. Don't even come at me with "He signed Yelich to a big contract", or the offseason 10 year deal with Chourio as reasons he is NOT cheap. Those things were things he really need to do, and if you look at the contracts, they weren't really "expensive" per say. I'm going to wait for Sveum to come along and remind us all how the payroll is higher than it's ever been as if that means he's not cheap. Hint: it doesn't. Wake me up when he actually takes a big swing(and gets them signed to a multi year deal) on a big time FA. Now others get to come along and say "if you think the Brewers can/will spend like the Yankees, you need to follow another team". Such a tired, weak argument. No one has ever said they expect them to spend like the Yankees, but they 100% certainly can do more(far more) then the crap we have been subjected too the last number of off seasons.- 108 replies

Fine with me, that is the same AAV of my 2 years/48 Million. I'm a huge proponent of longer term deals anyway. I have said all along I don't like all these 1 yr deals they do. man up, and go longer term for once. -

I already stated awhile back this very thing. My targets were Chapman and Hoskins. I THINK( if memory serves me right, doubtful) I had something like 2 years/48 Million for Chapman, and Like 2 yrs/32 mill for Hoskins. I don't know if those were exact numbers, but relatively close, I think. -

Ahhhh yes, the proverbial "ole bite of the apple" that the organization uses(obviously effectively) to dupe their fans into believing that the more "bites of the apple" you get, the better your chances are of it eventually paying off. How has that worked out for them? But hey "they've been in the playoffs 5 of the last six years", right"? They should have a ceremony at Amfam this next year to celebrate that great accomplishment and most definitely hang a banner for it! -

Pieces? They are pieces alright...I can't finish that because of the cuss filter, but you get what I'm saying. It's nothing more then throwing those pieces of......against a wall and hoping it sticks. If those kinds of "pieces" excite you(or anyone) then It's obviously already been an exciting offseason for you. -

Who said anything about signing marginal FA's(ironically you're bashing this and yet that is all the Brewers pretty much ever sign)? I sure as hell didn't. That's what the Royals did, sure, but my point was..they have spent 106 million thus far in FA TRYING to improve their team. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't(know one knows), but at least they are giving it a shot. If anyone thinks there aren't holes on this roster(particularly on the corners) and they think that marginal FA signings will fix them, I want some of what you're smoking. -
MLB 2023/2024 Free Agency Thread
JefferyLeonard replied to wiguy94's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Hey, the Royals are spending money in FA...They're trying at the very least. Something I wish the Brewers would do, for once. Soon, in all likelihood, they will announce the signing of(insert players name here) to a 1 yr 10 million $$ deal with a 2nd year option, and Brewerfan.net posters will collectively celebrate what a great signing it is, it has potential etc etc. Keep settling for and willingly accepting mediocrity in FA though BF.net posters. Nauseating. If the royals can do it...(insert sveum/other posters) excuses here. Blah blah blah "The Brewers already have a much higher payroll then the Royals" or whatever else they can drum up as an excuse(they refer to it as a FACT, but it's not) to excuse the Brewers being cheap. It is what it is. -
Also, I get really tired of everyone(not just here but everywhere) blaming the market size on why it's okay for the Brewers not to spend more and that they "can't". Yes, they can. It's all about the owner. Look at the Bucks, are they are large market in the NBA? Nope. yet they have been in the luxury tax for what 3 years now at least? My point is say if someone like Jimmy Haslam owned the Brewers, I feel really confident saying he would easily have payroll up around the $175-$180 million area every year(if not more). I wish Mark would consider selling to someone like Haslam. Brewer fans deserve it.
-
People, my whole point is this...sure maybe the Chourio signing won't effect who else they sign, but let's be realistic, when have they ever signed a big name FA to any kind of big money deal? They just aren't bold enough. Now further my point is this, if Mark A is willing to spend $80 million(and 80 million is 80 million no matter how many years it is for etc it's still 80 mill), I would much rather see him spend that 80 million on proven players, even if it's over two years for both. Look at all the $$ they have coming off the books, Woody is gone, You won't be paying Adames or Burnes after this year. Lots a lot of money you are going to be parsing from the payroll. That's probably what? minimum of $35-$40 million per year that will be off the payroll? Most of you I think believe they will spend that $40 million elsewhere. I don't doubt that they will. It's HOW they will spend it that most of you will applaud, and I will abhorr it. Most of you are probably okay with taking that 40 mill and seeing them sign two guys for 20 million per year for 1 year or two tops. I would MUCH prefer they take that 40 mill and sign one stud for $40 mill per year. We have seen how the one year low dollar signings they make work out...not well and with good reason. How about doing something bold for once? go big.
-
Okay sunshine, you seem SO certain they will sign someone to more than two years(since your mocking me guaranteeing that), Tell me who it will be. Also, since you think you know everything, put your money where your mouth is..I will further GUARANTEE that they will NOT sign both of Chapman and Hoskins(to multi year deals...more than 2 years each). I'm so sure of it, I'm willing to put 10k on it. If they do, you get 10k, if they don't, I get 10k. Sound fair? Of course you will chicken out...you run your mouth but when it comes time to put up or shut up...you won't do it. In fact, I will wager that with ANYONE here willing to take it. People rave about this front office and orgasm over most of the moves they make, yet they will never do something bold like I am stating they won't do. So if people are so confident in the FO, wager with me, Chapman and Hoskins in Brewer uniforms(for MORE multiple years) 10k, to whoever is right. Any takers? of course there won't be because they know I'm right.
-
No what's nonsensical is you not understanding...Take your pick..one Chapman or Hoskins you sign for 3 yrs 48 Million, the other 2 yrs 32 million. Boom, done. $80 million and now you have two very good bats for a minimum of two years oh and by the way, you still have Chourio. This isn't hard people. You all want it to be, but it's easy peasey. I just showed you how it's done. Any questions? Oh and for the record, I will put this out there right now..I will GUARANTEE you they don't sign anyone for more than 2 years plus maybe an option for about 10-12 million per year. That will be their biggest contract this offseason. Not a chance in hell they sign Chapman and Hoskins or either one. They aren't bold enough(or frankly smart enough) to sign two guys like that who also fill their two biggest needs.
-
Sorry, I didn't mean Matt Olson I meant Matt Chapman. I always get those two mixed up. But my point stands. You could have both Chapman and Hoskins easily for that $80 million. Go ahead, try to disagree with me...I dare you. It's not going to work, because EVERY single person here knows they could easily sign both of those players for $80 million(actually nowhere near that, but I digress).
-
So they spent 80 million on a player that hasn't touched Major league grass yet. You know what else they could have gotten for $80 million? Matt Chapman AND Rhys Hoskins, plus another arm, easily. Oh yeah and guess what? They would still have Chourio. I mean, look how much better this team already is by adding Matt Olson and Hoskins(who both fill positions of need as well). People rave about this contract means Mark isn't cheap? Except, what he obviously failed to realize, he could have signed two of the best FA's on the market and still had Chourio and your team is light years better than last years. I fail to understand why this organization continues to make things so difficult, when those were the two easiest moves you could have made if you were willing to spend $80 million.
-
That figures, why am I not surprised the Brewers still don't "get it"? You have plenty of time to not only control Churio, but to give him an extension. If Mark A is going to be shelling out piles of money for a long period of time, then for god sakes use it on a Free agent. No need to use it on Churio right now. Here's the part they don't seem to "get". You can shell out piles of money and get a stud FA bat AND still have Churio. It's not like he's leaving anytime soon.

Update: Brandon Woodruff is non-tendered.
JefferyLeonard replied to Jake McKibbin's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Here's what I will say...I think the number we have seen for Woody in arbitration was $15 million. I will admit they made the right decision IF and only IF they now take that $15million they just saved and put it towards a big time bat. Not splitting it between an *mill and 7 mill player, but the whole 15Mill(plus 10+ more) towards a legit bat. Whether that's an acquisition via trade or as a FA, I don't really care. And before anyone says "who exactly are they supposed to go get"? That's not for me to decide, that's on Matt Arnold and his team to decide. Otherwise, if Woody's money is "split" between two guys, it will just be wasted anyway(those guys won't produce at big time levels most likely), so it's no different to me than if you would have just tendered Woody. I keep thinking one of the days they will "get it", but I have been saying that for years and they still haven't figured it out.
