  1. Nashville Pre-Game Audio Chat with Catcher Vinny Rottino From the "you did not know this" category, Vinny has started 20% more games than any other PCL catcher this season...
  2. Final: Nashville 7, Round Rock (Astros) 4 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Brad Nelson photo, text follows -- Sounds Close Homestand With 7-4 Win NASHVILLE - The Nashville Sounds snapped a four-game skid by posting a 7-4 victory over the Round Rock Express on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium in the finale of a three-game series. With the victory, Nashville (35-55) brought an end to Round Rock's season-best eight-game winning streak. Sounds first baseman Brad Nelson paced the offensive attack and drove in three runs to up his team-leading RBI total to 52 on the year with a 3-for-4 night that included a pair of doubles. The Sounds took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning against Round Rock starter Ron Chiavacci. Nelson led off with a double into the right field corner and moved to third on Vinny Rottino's single before scoring the evening's first run on Brendan Katin's RBI single to left. Nashville added its second run when Rottino scored from third on a throwing error by Express second baseman Edwin Maysonet on Adam Heether's fielder's choice groundout. Nashville made it a 3-0 contest in the third when Hernan Iribarren led off with a single, moved to third on a Tony Gwynn single, and scored on a Nelson groundout. Round Rock rallied to tie the contest in the top of the fourth against Sounds starter Sam Narron. Former Sound J.R. House drew an inning-opening walk and moved to second on a Mark Saccomanno single before scoring on a Ray Sadler RBI double to the right-center wall. Tommy Manzella pulled the visitors within a run with a single before Sadler came plateward to knot the score at 3-3 on a Yordany Ramirez groundout. The Sounds regained the lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Gwynn reached first when Chiavacci failed to handle a flip from first baseman Saccomanno. After stealing second, Gwynn scored on Nelson's RBI single to center, the slugger's team-leading 51st RBI of the year. Saccomanno quickly re-tied the game at 4-4 in the next half-inning when he led off the sixth with a solo home run to left-center off Narron, his 20th roundtripper of the season. Nelson continued his big night in the seventh when he gave Nashville a 5-4 lead with a two-out RBI double to right, his second two-bagger of the night and team-leading 22nd of the year. Iribarren, who reached on a fielding error by Manzella at shortstop, scored unearned on the knock. AUDIO: Brad Nelson RBI Double Sounds reliever Tim Dillard worked into and out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the one-run lead intact in the top of the eighth. With one out, Sadler reached when his swinging third strike went to the backstop for a wild pitch and Gorneault and Manzella followed with singled to fill the bags. Dillard induced an inning-ending 1-2-3 double play groundout from Ramirez to preserve the Nashville advantage. Nashville added a pair of insurance runs against Fernando Nieve in the home half of the eighth. Heether drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a Carlos Corporan double before pinch-hitter Ozzie Chavez ripped a one-out RBI single to right. Iribarren followed with an RBI knock to center to make it a 7-4 contest. Derrick Turnbow (2-2) picked up the win in relief for the Sounds after working one scoreless inning, allowing one hit and one walk and striking out a pair of batters. Luis Pena notched his 13th save of the year by working a scoreless ninth. Nieve (1-4) took the loss for the Express after allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits in 1 1/3 innings of work. Narron took a no-decision for Nashville after allowing four runs on five hits over six innings of work. Corporan recorded his first career Triple-A hits in the contest, legging out a fourth-inning triple before adding a double in the eighth. The Sounds travel to Omaha, Nebraska on Monday for a four-day, five-game series that includes a Tuesday doubleheader. Right-hander Mark DiFelice (3-0, 3.54) will toe the rubber for Nashville in Monday's 7:05 p.m. CT series opener. Omaha will counter with right-hander Roman Colon (2-2, 4.60). Nashville Box Score Vinny Rottino at third base in this one, Adam Heether at short, mising day-to-day veteran Chris Woodward right now -- that's what you do when Ozzie Chavez sports a pitiful .517 OPS; no 1-2-3 relief innings, but in their own unique ways, the stints of Derrick Turnbow, Tim Dillard, and Luis Pena are of interest... 3. Final: West Virginia 16, Hagerstown (Nationals) 1 West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER SMASH SUNS Eric Fryer went 5-for-5 and drove in six runs while Roque Mercedes turned in six great innings on Sunday night at Appalachian Power Park as the West Virginia Power scored 16 unanswered runs to defeat the Hagerstown Suns 16-1. The Suns got their lone run in the top of the second on Garrett Bass's RBI groundout. The Power began their rampage with a five-run second inning. Cole Kimball issued bases loaded walks with two outs to Lee Haydel and Eric Farris and Fryer capped the five-run frame with a three-run double. The Power plated six runs in the third. Uly Snijders walked with the bases loaded on four pitches to plate the first run and Matt Cline was hit by the very next pitch to bring in the next run. Haydel and Fryer doubled in two runs apiece to finish the inning. Farris doubled in a run to start the five-run fifth before Fryer singled Farris home and Zelous Wheeler capped the inning with a three-run homer, his eighth of the season. Mercedes (3-4) turned in his finest start of the season, holding the Suns to just a run on three hits over six innings and got the victory. Kimball (3-5) allowed eight runs on five hits and walked four batters through two innings of work and was tagged with the loss. Jose Garcia and Pedro Lambertus combined to toss three scoreless innings of relief. The Power improved to 44-42 on the year and 12-5 in the second half with the win. The Suns fell to 43-43 on the year and 9-8 in the second half with the loss. Farris extended his hitting streak to nine games while Fryer extended his to seven. Caleb Gindl's hitting streak was snapped at 11 games. Fryer's five-hit performance paced the Power and he went 21-for-36 during the ten game home stand. Wheeler went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs while Steffan Wilson and Haydel turned in two hits each. The 16 runs established a new season high. West Virginia finished the ten-game home stand with a 8-2 record and they are two games over .500 for the first time this season. The Power will begin a four game series against the Savannah SandGnats at Grayson Stadium in Savannah, Georgia on Monday night. Right hander R.J. Seidel (5-4, 4.87) will make the start for the Power. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM (6:00 Central). West Virginia Box Score Eric Fryer couldn't make a full-season squad out of extended spring, this is just ridiculous what he's doing, but keep it up, dude; Zelous Wheeler just a triple shy of the cycle, plus a walk -- he's been the steadiest Power player this season; just-turned 20-year-old RHP Jose Garcia hadn't pitched since June 21st; every time some of us are prepared to write off Roque Mercedes (my hand is raised), he puts together a week like this past one to get back on the radar; Scott Houin pinch-hit for Caleb Gindl in the 7th, but there's no indication it was anything more than a move in a blowout victory... 4. Final: Birmingham (White Sox) 3, Huntsville 2 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Barons Squeeze Out Another Close Win Huntsville Held in Check Offensively For Second Straight Night By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars Aaron Poreda worked 6 1/3 solid innings and two late runs were the difference in Birmingham's 3-2 win over Huntsville Sunday in the third of a four-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Barons improved to 12-7 in the second half and won their league-high 52nd game, while the Stars slipped to 9-10 in the second half and three games behind victorious Tennessee in the North Division. The Barons have won six of the eight games between the teams, with five of the wins by either one or two runs. Eric Hollis led off the third inning against Brae Wright with a single, moved to third base on a one-out single by Miguel Negron and scored the game's first run on a Robert Hudson sacrifice bunt. Hudson drew a one-out walk in the sixth, the first issued by Wright in 20.1 innings, and was thrown out trying to score on a Ricardo Nanita double for the second out of the inning. Wright went seven strong innings, allowing a run on three hits, walking one and fanning six. Poreda retired the first 12 batters he faced before walking Angel Salome to start the fifth but that was quickly erased when Cole Gillespie grounded into a double play. Mike Bell ended the left-hander's no-hit bid with a leadoff infield single in the sixth. Poreda also went five hitless innings in a May 6 start for Winston-Salem before a leadoff home run ended that no-hit bid. Alcides Escobar led off the seventh with a walk, moved to second base on a passed ball, to third on a Mat Gamel groundout and scored to tie the game on a double by Salome that chased Poreda. Ryan Rote took over and walked Gillespie before striking out J.R. Hopf and Bell to end the frame. Poreda allowed a run on four hits, walked two and struck out five and remained winless in five double-A starts. Steve Bray took over for Wright and struck out the first two hitters he faced before Negron walked, stole second, went to third on an errant throw by the catcher and scored on a two-out single by Hudson to give the Barons the lead. Hudson stole second and came around on a single by Ricardo Nanita that pushed the lead to two. Rote retired the side in order in the eighth to grab his first win and was followed to the hill in the ninth by Jon Link, who walked Escobar to open the frame. Gamel singled to advance Escobar to third before Salome grounded into a double play that scored Escobar to cut the lead to 3-2. Gillespie then flied out to end the game, as Link recorded his league-high 24th save. Huntsville was held to four hits for a second straight game and has mustered only 15 in the series. The series finishes up Monday night with right-hander Donovan Hand taking the hill against Barons' right-hander Carlos Torres. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 PM central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com. Huntsville Box Score Cole Gillespie's importance increases after the Matt LaPorta deal; Alcides Escobar walked twice, his 20 BB's in 373 AB's is actually an improvement over past ratios, but is still abysmal -- nearly all his .356 OBP comes from his .324 average; J.R. Hopf's going to get plenty of AB's in Chris Errecart's absence; 24-year-old lefty Brae Wright has had a nice initial AA season; Steve Bray started his own-troubles with the two-out walk -- tough, tough season for Steve... 5. Final: Billings (Reds) 5, Helena 4 Helena Box Score Tough night for 2nd round RHP Cody Adams, the losing pitcher in relief; starter Trey Watten allowed eight baserunners, but held the Mustangs scoreless in his five innings; 13 of Brock Kjeldgaard's 23 hits have gone for extra bases; a tidy two hour, 17 minute affair... Helena Game Log Right fielder Mike Vass gunned down a man at the plate to end the 2nd inning, which helped Trey Watten, naturally; the first 12 Brewers went down in order until Kjeldgaard's 5th inning home run -- 18 of the first 19 Brewers were retired; Adams was hit hard in the 8th, among the carnage four doubles, three listed as line drives; tough break for the H-Crew in the 9th, as Chris Dennis, on first base with one out, moved to second on Derrick Alfonso's single, but was also out at 2nd on the play (over-ran?) -- we'll check audio later on...
  6. Michael Brantley took batting practive today, first time since spraining his ankle, as per the Huntsville broadcast.
  7. And you guys thought the bobblehead was Barrelman today -- it was the spitting image of C.C.!
  8. This trade is about the postseason rotation, not the regular season rotation, Russ.
  9. Thank you, Matt LaPorta -- thank you, Jack Z. for making it possible.
  10. Brett Pollock just said Michael Garciaparra is in right, we may see a box score correction in a bit.
  11. Final: Arizona Cubs 6, Arizona Brewers 1 Arizona Box Score Can't wait to see catcher Shawn Zarraga in West Virginia next year, no way he'll be in short-season ball again -- he had two doubles today, two of the A-Crew's three hits; outfielder Erik Miller was a weak performer last season, and had a golden sombrero (0-for-4, 4 K's) in his debut today; another Miller (Greg) pitched well, as did LHP Daniel Meadows -- Meadows hasn't allowed an earned run in eight innings thus far; 17-year-old Canadian Stosh Wawrzasek had a tough start to his first pro inning, but if you can "settle down" within a single inning, he did; Brewers drew five walks, but stranded eight; the Cubs' LHP Rich Hill allowed only two baserunners in four innings; 17-year-old OF Hitaniel Arias absent again -- we may have to dip deep into our Brewer rolodex to get any update there, we'll give it a few more days... 12. Final: Daytona (Cubs) 7, Brevard County 4 Game Summary from the Daytona site: Cubs Return Home With Series Win Over Manatees Bullpen Blow Late Lead Again, But Offense Pulls Through [VIERA, FL] The rubber match of the current series against Brevard County proved to be a hard fought battle. Daytona was able to hold off the Manatees and win their second straight series after a 7-4 win. Hung-Wen Chen was coming off a nine strikeout performance last week against the St. Lucie Mets. Today, he played damage control as he gave up three home runs. The first of those came in the first inning when Jonathan Lucroy hit a solo-shot. Chen did give up three homers, but just like the first one to Lucroy, they were all solo home runs. That allowed Chen to hang in the game longer than anyone would expect a man who gives up three bombs to. With the first inning out of the way, the Cubs had to play a little bit of comeback. The second Manatees' run came across the plate in the fourth. Lucroy connected again for his second home run of the day. It happened again with nobody on base, but made the score 2-0. Daytona's offense came to life in the fifth inning. It almost didn't happen. Jonathan Mota and Darwin Barney were the first two men to the plate and were also the first two outs of the inning. Jose Made then connected with a two-out single. Jim Adduci and Yusuf Carter were able to coax walks out of Jeremy Jeffress to load the bases. It's never a good idea to load the bases for Blake Lalli. Lalli took full advantage and stroked a single to left field. That brought in Made and Adduci and made the score 2-2. Lalli was also able to advance a base when he caught the infield sleeping after the play. That put runners on second and third for Robinson Chirinos. Chirinos provided the third hit of the inning to bring in two more runs and give Daytona a 4-2 lead. It became a one-run affair in the fifth when Chen gave up his third home run. This time it was Stephen Chapman with a solo home run. Things got very interesting in the eighth. Carter made a catch in rightfield and dropped the ball on the exchange from his glove. The umpiring crew ruled that it was not a catch. That brought manager Jody Davis out of the dugout. In the previous inning, Manatees skipper Mike Guerrero argued a call for nearly five minutes and was not ejected. Davis didn't fare the same as he was promptly tossed from the game. It was the second time Davis has been ejected by the same umpiring crew in ten days. Carter didn't fare any better as he was removed by the umpiring crew as well. With Ty Wright unable to play, the Cubs were strapped and low on outfielders after Carter's ejection. That forced Richie Zisk to put reliever Jayson Ruhlman into the game as an outfielder. After all the hoopla, Brevard County tied the game in the eighth on a Chuckie Caufield sacrifice fly. Daytona got the lead back for good in the ninth. Barney led off with a walk against Jeffress. He then moved to third when Made singled. Made stole second to put two men in scoring position which brought Adduci to the plate. Adduci singled to left to bring in both base runners to put the Cubs back on top. Lalli later hit a sac fly to bring in another Cubs' run and make the score 7-4. Todd Blackford picks up the win in relief. Jeffress is charged with the loss. Brevard County Box Score Jonathan Lucroy's home runs were to center field, then right -- good thing, as usual, wind in from left field at 11 MPH; Jeffress struck out ten and walked four in his stint, and the strategy to have "a finisher mentality" provided a top-notch opportunity as Jeffress headed to the 9th in a tie game, but a walk, his own error on a sac bunt, and a single spelled the end of Jeremy's afternoon; LHP Bobby Bramhall three scoreless innings in his "start"; Taylor Green 0-for-3 with a walk -- will he still be a Brewer at day's end? Brent Brewer has a .472 OPS in 81 Brevard AB's -- he's the infamous Josh Murray, minus Murray's Vanilla Ice attitude -- Murray may have been Jack Z.'s worst draft pick ever, bar none... Link while active, text follows: Healthy Nix returns to lineup, gets 2 hits By STEVE SILVER Tennessean Staff Writer Right fielder Laynce Nix returned to the starting lineup Saturday night for the first time since June 29, when he injured his right heel in a 7-2 loss at Round Rock. Nix singled in the first and third innings Saturday and has hit safely in eight of his past nine games. "(Nix) swung the bat well for being out for awhile," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said. "He gave us good at-bats considering his foot is still bothering him a little bit." Nix, who went 2-for-5 on Saturday, is batting .286 with 42 RBIs and a team-high 15 home runs. He had a nine-game hitless streak from May 30-June 9. Home run drought over: Tony Gwynn's three-run shot in the fourth inning snapped a season-high five-game homer-less streak for the Sounds. "It's one of those things where I'm just trying to be aggressive and trust my eye so I can adjust to anything off speed," Gwynn said. Despite Gwynn's home run, the Sounds are last in the Pacific Coast League with 70. Albuquerque leads the league with 124 homers. Sneaky running: Hernan Iribarren notched his team-high 18th stolen base in the second inning. Iribarren is tied for second in the league behind Oklahoma's Joaquin Arias, who has 20. The Sounds lead the PCL with 103 stolen bases. Seventh inning tells all: The Sounds are 1-51 when trailing after seven innings. On the flip side, Nashville is 31-1 when leading after seven. Pinch-hitting pitcher: Sam Narron became the first Sounds pitcher to pinch-hit this season when he replaced pitcher Ben Howard in the bottom of the eighth inning. Narron struck out looking. He is 7-for-18 at the plate this season. Ex-Sound signs: The Cleveland Indians signed free-agent pitcher Jeff Weaver to a minor league contract. The right-handed Weaver will report to Triple-A Buffalo of the International League. Weaver was 7-13 with a 6.20 ERA in 27 starts for the Mariners last year and pitched this season for the Sounds from May 1-June 11.

The problem was most of those hitters were left on base. The Sounds got 14 hits compared to the Express' 12, but they stranded 10 runners in their 10-5 loss to lose their fourth straight. The Sounds took a 2-1 lead in the fourth thanks to pitcher Richie Gardner's sacrifice grounder, and center fielder Tony Gwynn launched a three-run blast to right field to give the Sounds a commanding 5-1 lead. Gwynn's shot snapped his 573 at-bat home run drought that dated to Aug. 22, 2006. "As soon as I hit it I just kept thinking I need to run because it's going to hit off the wall," said, Gwynn who went 3-for-5 in the loss. "Then I heard the crowd and I knew it was over. "It feels good at the time, but if you don't get the win, then it doesn't matter." The Sounds (34-55) are now 17-24 at Greer Stadium and remain in last place in the PCL. "We come out every day to win," Manager Frank Kremblas said. "We just haven't matched up the pitching with the hitting." Yeah, you might say that. The Sounds were just 2-of-12 with runners on base. Round Rock's Mark Saccomanno crushed a three-run home run off reliever Randy Choate to put the Express on top 7-5 in the seventh inning. In the eighth, pinch-hitter Ray Sadler added a two-run shot that sailed over the guitar scoreboard in left field to give the Express a 9-5 lead. Former Sounds catcher J.R. House punctuated the night with a solo blast in the top of the ninth to seal Round Rock's victory.

It was the first win the Brewers (10-9) have collected at the newly constructed Dehler Park in Billings, and the Mustangs' (12-7) first loss, going down before 3,528 spectators. The Brewers led from beginning to end when they split four runs over the second and third innings. They added their final run in the fifth, taking a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth. That wouldn't slow down Billings, however, as they began a two-out, three-run rally. Brett Bartles and David Sappelt each singled and Alex Buchholz walked to load the bases. After Tony Brown's single to right field drew in two runs, Arnold replaced Brandon Ritchie on the mound. Arnold allowed Buchholz to score on a single by Tyler Stovall, then walked Michael Konstanty to load the bases for a second time in the inning before Wideman stepped to the plate for the Mustangs' final at-bat. Arnold collected his fourth save of the year. Helena's Michael Vass hit an RBI double and scored a run on Jose Duran's single in the second inning. Corey Kemp singled in a run and Brock Kjeldgaard walked home in the third. But it was Vass' sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth that scored Kjeldgaard once again for the winning run. Kjeldgaard led the Brewers with a 3-for-4 performance, scoring three runs in the clean-up spot. The Mustangs used up four pitchers, as did the Brewers, but it was starter Jamie Arneson (2-1) who finished with the loss. He gave up four earned runs on six hits over 2 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked three. Wily Peralta started for the Brewers and didn't give up a hit over three innings, striking out two and walking one. Mark Willinsky was given the win, however, allowing one earned run on four hits while walking four and striking out three. The Brewers will play again today at Billings, beginning at 4:05 PM (5:05 Central).

Link while active, text follows: Buzz of trade flatters Stars hitter LaPorta Trade for Indians' Sabathia rumored to be in works By BRAD SHEPARD For The Huntsville Times Matt LaPorta was talking to his fiancee, Dara, on Friday night when she asked the question everybody around baseball wants to know. "Are you being traded?" she inquired of the Huntsville Stars outfielder. LaPorta didn't know. But reports by multiple national news outlets have his name as well as Stars shortstop Alcides Escobar's being rumored in trade talks that would bring 2007 American League Cy Young award winner C.C. Sabathia to Milwaukee from Cleveland. While Escobar may be a long shot to be traded, the buzz surrounding Brewers' top prospect LaPorta is palpable. An Indians scout was at Joe Davis Stadium on Saturday, but he would not comment. Cleveland also has evaluated 21-year-old third baseman Taylor Green of High-A Brevard County. Despite the intensity of the rumors, the Milwaukee organization is downplaying its pursuit of Sabathia, although assistant general manager Gord Ash did sound open to adding players to a surging Brewers team. "At some point, you have to play for today and not for tomorrow," Ash said Saturday. "We're 4 1/2 games out of the playoffs in our division and (one) game out of the wild card spot. "I can't comment on (Sabathia) specifically other than to say that starting pitching is at a premium, and we don't have any depth there. We would also like to add another arm to our bullpen and another left-handed bat to our lineup." LaPorta seemed honored to be discussed with a player of Sabathia's caliber. The 27-year-old Indians southpaw will be a free agent at the end of the year, and though the Brewers would have to re-sign him, he and Ben Sheets, who is also in the final year of his contract, would give Milwaukee a formidable 1-2 punch down the stretch. "It's kind of flattering to have your name being brought up for one of the best pitchers in the game," LaPorta said. "There would be no hard feelings one way or another. This is a business, and I understand that." He found out about his name being brought up when some teammates told him a couple of days ago that they'd seen his name on ESPN. That's where Escobar heard his name, too. "I was surprised," Escobar said through an interpreter. "But I've been playing the same way my whole career, and I don't worry about things from the outside." Stars manager Don Money joked that he would be the last to hear about it if a trade happened. "CNN," Money said, pointing toward his television. "That's how I'll find out about it. I listen to the TV, and I know the deadline is (July) 31st. That's about all I know."
