Link while active, text follows: Idaho Falls one-hits Brewers By JEFF WINDMUELLER - Helena Independent Record One hit and that was it. The Helena Brewers were subject to another pitching exhibition Thursday night as three Idaho Falls pitchers combined for a one-hitter, beating Helena 3-0 before a crowd of 999. The Brewers (11-12) lost in a no-hitter to the Missoula Osprey earlier this season, but this time around lead-off batter John Delaney got the solo base knock, a bouncer to left field on Helena's first at-bat. The Brewers didn't have much of a chance after that as the Chukars' (8-15) Ivor Hodgson, Colby Beach and Blaine Hardy combined with the defense to blank them the rest of the way. "We didn't make adjustments," said Helena hitting coach Paco Martin. "(Hodgson) had the outside corner covered, and then we were trying to guess." Hodgson threw a number of off-speed pitches and walked four while striking out three batters over five innings. Helena got some breaks, but trying to advance runners became pretty much futile. After Delaney got on, David Fonseca batted into the first double play of the night. Idaho Falls eventually picked up three double plays by the end of the game. Brett Whiteside and Derrick Alfonso both got on base in the third, thanks to back-to-back walks. However, Whiteside was caught stealing second before Alfonso even walked, and Alfonso was subject to the same fate as Delaney earlier, becoming the first out in a ground-out double play. In the fifth and final inning of Hodgson's stay, the Chukars pulled off both defensive plays. Corey Kemp went down swinging and Brock Kjeldgaard was thrown out trying to steal second for the third double play of the night. It took until the bottom of the seventh for Helena to even reach second, and that came when Erik Komatsu walked on and then advanced when a ball got by Chukars catcher Juan Graterol. Helena walked a total of seven times and ended with five batters left on base. Idaho Falls, meanwhile, put together a two-run third inning with some timely hits. Devery Van De Keere doubled off the right field wall to start the inning. Juan Graterol singled him in, but then was thrown out stealing second. Patrick Norris tripled when he sent a ball over the head of Komatsu in center field and then scored on Alwin Perez's blooper to center. Starting pitcher Nick Tyson was pulled after the inning, and Daniel Meadows, who was picked up two days ago from the Arizona Brewers, was welcomed to mound with a home run by Antonio Jimenez. Meadows was able to get out the next nine straight batters, striking out two before Mark Willinsky came in to relieve. Rob Wooten closed the ninth inning by forcing a fly-out and then a double play after Van De Keere reached on an error. Hodgson scored the win while Hardy picked up a save, striking out two and walking one over two innings. Beach struck out five and walked two in his two-inning stay. Tyson finished with the loss, giving up two earned runs on five hits with a walk and a strike out. The Brewers are now 1-2 against the Chukars, picking up the only Pioneer League Northern Division win Wednesday night as the two divisions continue to face off. The Southern Division went 4-0 on Thursday. Ogden beat Billings 7-5, Orem blanked Great Falls 13-0 and Casper beat up Missoula 13-6. Helena hosts the Chukars once more tonight at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central) before getting a four-game visit from Casper. "We'll just have to take it tomorrow," Martin said. "It's a different day."

Link while active, text follows: Sounds limp into final first-half series Manager wants Nashville's focus on consistency By STEVE SILVER Tennessean Staff Writer After taking three of five games from the Omaha Royals, the Sounds return to Greer Stadium at 7 tonight to face the New Orleans Zephyrs in their last home-stand before the Pacific Coast League All-Star break. The Sounds, now 38-57 after Thursday night's 6-5, 10-inning loss at Omaha, are slated to play four games against the Zephyrs (44-51), including a doubleheader on Saturday that begins at 6 pm. The two squads split their first eight meetings this season, but the Sounds dominated a four-game homestand against the Zephyrs on May 15-18, winning three of those games. "At this point in the season, we just have to focus, be mentally prepared and turn in consistent performances," Manager Frank Kremblas said. "If you are doing those things, then more often than not, you'll give yourself a chance to win." Although the Sounds are evenly matched against the Zephyrs, who were last in the PCL with a .250 batting average entering Thursday, Nashville has yet to find its rhythm at Greer. Nashville not only has the worst home record in the PCL at 18-24, but they also have the second-worst home batting average (.239). "I don't know we are doing anything different there," Kremblas said. "We just need to get comfortable and believe that we can perform." Tonight's game is another Purity Faith Night that includes postgame fireworks and a pregame concert by former major league pitcher Kent Bottenfield.

Final: Idaho Falls (Royals) 3, Helena 0 Helena Site Game Summary: Chukars Blank Brewers The Idaho Falls Chukars pitching staff combined to give up only one hit to the Helena Brewers Thursday night at Kindrick Field. Ivor Hodgson, Colby Beach and Blaine Hardy held the home team at bay by striking out ten Brewer hitters. Hodgson earned the win, while Beach got credit for the hold and Hardy picked up the save. Nick Tyson took the loss, as the right-hander gave up two runs over three innings while striking out one and walking one. John Delaney had the lone hit for the Brewers, as he singled in their first at-bat of the game. Brock Kjeldgaard and Derrick Alfonso each had two walks for Helena. Antonio Jimenez, who hit a home run in the contest, led Idaho Falls offensively while Nick Francis doubled and Patrick Norris tripled. The Brewers look to bounce back Friday night and even the series with Idaho Falls 2-2. Helena Box Score Brewers drew seven walks but advanced only one runner to second base all night, Helena 0-for-27 after the leadoff single; Rob Wooten overcame a 9th inning David Fonseca error to induce a double play for a scoreless inning in his pro debut... Final: Omaha (Royals) 6, Nashville 5, ten innings Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Brendan Katin photo, text follows -- Sounds Close Road Trip With Extra-Inning Loss OMAHA - The Omaha Royals scored a one-out run in the bottom of the tenth inning to hang a 6-5 loss on the Nashville Sounds on Thursday evening at Rosenblatt Stadium in the finale of a five-game series. Despite the defeat, the Sounds (38-57) won three of their five contests in Omaha, marking the club's second winning road series this season. The contest was Nashville's eighth extra-inning affair of the year (3-5). In the bottom of the tenth, Mike Stodolka led off with a single against Sounds reliever Ben Howard and moved to third on a one-out Chris Lubanski double before scoring the winning run on David Matranga's infield grounder to short, sliding into home to beat catcher Vinny Rottino's tag. Brendan Katin opened the evening's scoring when he belted his third home run of the series, a mammoth three-run shot to left off Omaha starter Dusty Hughes in the top of the second inning. The blast, Katin's 14th of the year, was the first longball to hit the scoreboard beyond the left field bleachers at Rosenblatt since they were put up three years ago. Brad Nelson and Rottino, who had opened the frame with a single and double respectively, scored on the homer. AUDIO: Brendan Katin Three-Run HR "That was impressive" The Royals tied the contest at 3-3 with a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth against Sounds starter Richie Gardner. Brian Buchanan delivered a one-out, two-run double to left before scoring the tying run later in the frame on a Matt Tupman sacrifice fly. Nashville home run leader Laynce Nix put the visitors back ahead in the sixth when he slugged his team-best 16th big fly of the year, a one-out solo shot to right off Hughes that gave the Sounds a 4-3 advantage. For the third straight outing, Gardner departed in line for a victory only to end up with a no-decision following a blown save by the Sounds' bullpen. The right-hander allowed three runs on nine hits over his five frames of action. Omaha knotted the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth on Mitch Maier's two-out RBI single against Erasmo Ramirez that scored Angel Sanchez, who had opened the inning with a single of his own. The Royals took a 5-4 lead in the seventh against Tim Dillard. Jason Smith tripled and later scored the go-ahead run on a two-out wild pitch. The Sounds tied the game in the top of the ninth inning. Rottino doubled off Omaha reliever Devon Lowery then eventually moved to third when the right-hander issued consecutive walks to Katin and Adam Heether. After Omaha skipper Mike Jirschele summoned Brad Salmon to the hill to replace Lowery, Chris Woodward lifted a sacrifice fly to right-center to plate Rottino and make it a 5-5 contest. The right-hander avoided further damage when he induced an inning-ending groundout from Ozzie Chavez to leave runners at second and third. The late Omaha score made a winner out of Salmon (6-4), who worked 1 2/3 scoreless frames but took a blown save. Howard (2-5) took the loss after allowing the game-winning run in his 1 1/3 innings of work. Nashville centerfielder Tony Gwynn singled in the eighth inning to extend the club's longest active hitting streak to eight games, matching the outfielder's best effort this season. The Sounds return to Music City on Friday to host the New Orleans Zephyrs in a four-game, three-day weekend series, the third between the clubs this season. The teams have split their initial eight games in 2008. Left-hander Sam Narron (5-3, 4.26) will man the bump for Nashville in Friday's 7 p.m. series opener. New Orleans will counter with right-hander and former Brewer third-round draft pick (1999) Ruddy Lugo (6-8, 5.21). Nashville Box Score Brad Nelson on base three times; OBP still over .400... Final: West Virginia 5, Savannah (Mets) 4 West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER SWEEP SAND GNATS The West Virginia Power matched their longest winning streak of the season on Thursday night at Grayson Stadium as they defeated the Savannah Sand Gnats 5-4 to win their sixth game in a row, and they swept the Sand Gnats in the process. West Virginia scored first on Steffan Wilson's two-run triple in the top of the first inning. On the play, Greg Veloz's errant relay throw allowed Wilson to score. The Sand Gnats scored twice in the bottom of the first on a double from Sean McCraw. The Power added to their lead in the second inning when Matt Cline scored on an errant throw from Maikel Cleto. Wilson struck again in the third inning on an RBI double to score Caleb Gindl. In the bottom of the third inning with runners on second and third, the game was delayed by 40 minutes due to rain. During the delay a mistake on the Savannah lineup card was revealed. Francisco Pena was originally in the lineup as a designated hitter batting sixth and Richard Pena was listed as the right fielder batting seventh. It was revealed during the delay on the lineup card held by umpire Bryan Dormaier that the two were switched and the two Pena's batted out of order. Because of the violation, Francisco Pena was taken out of the game, Richard Pena had to bat sixth, and the pitcher occupied the seventh spot in the order. McCraw's groundout after the delay in the third scored Veloz to make it a two-run game. The Sand Gnats scored one final time when B.J. Hubbert hit a pinch-hit home run in the seventh inning. Evan Anundsen (8-4) battled through six and a third, allowing four runs on seven hits and came away with the victory. Corey Frerichs (7) allowed just a hit over two and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief to get the save. Cleto (3-7) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits over three innings. The Power improved to 48-42 on the year and 16-5 in the second half with the win. The Sand Gnats fell to 40-51 on the year and 7-14 in the second half with the loss. Four Power players turned in multi-hit games. Steffan Wilson knocked in three runs and extended his road hitting streak to 16 games. Eric Fryer went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and Eric Farris singled in the first inning to push his hitting streak to 13 games. West Virginia has won three games in a row by one run and they have won four out of their last six by the same margin. The Power will begin a four game series against the Charleston Riverdogs at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Ballpark in Charleston, South Carolina on Friday night. Right hander Amaury Rivas (6-3, 3.69) will make the start for the Power and the Riverdogs will counter with right hander Lance Pendleton (6-4, 2.64). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). West Virginia Box Score Even though technically it wasn't a "quality start" for Evan Anundsen, Brewer coaches would tell you otherwise, as Anundsen improves on his already stellar 2.50 GB/FB ratio with a 12-to-3 effort here with only one walk; with eight wins now, Anundsen is ahead in the race for Organizational Pitcher of the Year honors, as we're discussing on another thread in this forum -- the Brewers aren't shy about honoring low-A players that way, as Taylor Green learned last season; Corey Frerichs is having one heck of a year out of the pen, as we've noted before; Steffan Wilson is a young 22, and continues to prove he's worthy of serious middle-of-the-order prospect status, 36 of his 82 hits for extra bases, with a double and triple here... Final: Huntsville 9, Chattanooga (Reds) 8 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Stars Survive Late Rally to Down Looks Offense Keeps Rolling Right Along in Victory By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars Angel Salome collected three hits and knocked in three runs for a second straight night to pace a 14-hit attack in leading Huntsville to a 9-8 victory over Chattanooga Thursday night in the third of a five-game set at AT&T Field. The Stars improved to 13-10 in the second half but could not gain ground on victorious Tennessee in the North Division, while the Lookouts dropped to 10-13 and fell six games behind the Smokies. The Stars won a fourth straight game for the first time since sweeping a five-game set at Smokies Park from May 10-14. Juan Sandoval started the bottom of the ninth on the hill for Huntsville with a 9-7 lead and gave up a leadoff single to Drew Stubbs and walked Tonys Gutierrez with one out before Drew Anderson singled home Stubbs to cut the lead to one. Sandoval then struck out Sean Henry and got Justin Turner to fly out to end the game to earn his second save of the series and 11th of the season. Stubbs had four hits in his first game at the double-A level. Cole Gillespie was hit with one out in the sixth, J.R. Hopf walked and both runners moved up on a wild pitch by starter James Avery then came in to score on a double by Mike Bell that tied the game at six. Michael Brantley, making his first appearance in two weeks after being sidelined by a sprained right ankle, lined a pinch-hit single into left field to score Bell to give the Stars their first lead and spell the end of the night for Avery, who was charged with seven runs on eight hits, while walking one and matching a season-high with seven strikeouts. He took the loss to drop to 6-6 overall and 0-2 against Huntsville. Lorenzo Cain tripled in a run with one out in the eighth to push the visitors lead to 8-6 but the Stars could not bring him around to add to their advantage. Jason Shiell took over for David Johnson, who threw two shutout innings in relief, to start the eighth and gave up a run-scoring double with one out to Danny Dorn that trimmed the lead to 8-7. The veteran right-hander retired the next two batters to end the frame. Gillespie's run-scoring hit in the ninth gave the Stars a two-run lead again but he was doubled off from second base on a fly ball out to end the inning. The Stars strung together four singles in the inning and have now totaled 38 runs on 61 hits during their winning streak, with at least 13 hits in all four games. The Lookouts took the lead in the first inning for a second straight night on a Dorn double play grounder that scored Henry. The Stars have allowed the first run in six of their last seven games. Angel Salome's leadoff long ball in the second, his eighth of the season and third against Avery, got the game tied. Chattanooga reclaimed the lead in the home second against Mike Jones on a run-scoring hit by Gutierrez and a two-out, two-run single by Turner. Huntsville came right back to plate three runs in the top of the third on a run-scoring hit by Alcides Escobar and a two-out, two-run double by Salome, who has knocked in a run in 12 of his last 19 games. Jones was taken out in the fourth with one out after issuing two walks and replaced by Patrick Ryan, who walked Turner to load the bases before Dorn singled in two runs to put the home team back on top, 6-4. Ryan then squelched the rally and got Henry to bounce into an inning-ending double play in the fifth with the bases loaded to earn his third win of the season with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. The series continues Friday night with right-hander Nic Ungs starting for Huntsville against Lookouts' southpaw Ben Jukich. Coverage of the game begins at 6:00 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com. Huntsville Box Score What's not to like about Angel Salome's line -- .343 / .398 / .516 (.914 OPS) -- it's true, where's the national pub? To think if Angel were a Yankee or Red Sox farmhand; welcome back, Michael Brantley; I guess commenting on Mike Jones here wouldn't solve anything -- but all indications are he's a good kid who's worked hard, and this is his 8th year in the system, time flies, huh? It probably seems like forever for Mike... Huntsville Game Log

Will Inman with a really bizarre line tonight -- only two hits and one run allowed with nine K's, but because he also walked five, he only went four innings. In his last three starts, covering only 13.1 innings, Inman has walked 12. In his last 11 starts, he has only worked 54.2 innings. That's only averaging just under five innings a start since May 16th, and that's just not getting it done at all, despite an ERA of 3.95 in that stretch.

Final: Lakeland (Tigers) 7, Brevard County 5 Brevard County Box Score Manatees rallied from a 5-2 deficit to tie after eight before the Flying Tigers scored two in the 9th off Josh Wahpepah and Mike McClendon; as noted above, RHP Josh Butler struggled yet again -- only 2.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 HBP, 3 BB, plus LHP Bobby Bramhall stranded two runners for him as part of a wonderful (again) middle relief effort; Brevard stranded 11; Taylor Green singled twice in five AB's and had a two-out RBI; night off for Stephen Chapman against a southpaw, so utility man Jimmy Mojica was your first baseman... Brevard County Game Log Bramhall's "strand" in the 3rd inning was aided big-time by Chuckie Caufield's throw to the plate to nail a runner from right field; Manatees scored one in the 7th as part of their comeback, but had the bases loaded, one out, and didn't capitalize for more; the bottom of the 8th's two-run rally also ended prematurely with Green hoping to take an extra base on his two-out RBI single... Even when Brent Brewer is good, he's bad: he's 3-3 with a stolen base, but he was caught stealing once and also picked off. I really dislike how MiLB.com indicates this on their box scores, as Brewer was only caught stealing once. If the pickoff play ends at first base, it goes down as a pickoff, but if the runner takes off for second and is thrown out, the box score marks both the pickoff and the caught stealing attempt.
