  1. Final: Kannapolis (White Sox) 5, West Virginia 2 West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER FALL BEHIND EARLY IN LOSS TO KANNAPOLIS The Kannapolis Intimidators scored four runs on five hits in the first inning of Friday night's game at FieldCrest Cannon Stadium and never looked back, as they snapped West Virginia's four-game winning streak with a 5-3 victory. Dale Mollenhauer and Sergio Morales began the first inning with back-to-back singles and scored on Jim Gallagher's sixth homer of the season. Mark Fleisher followed the three-run shot with a double and scored the final run of the inning on Anderson Gomes's two-out double. Curt Rindal drove in West Virginia's first run of the game in the top of the second inning with a sacrifice fly that plated Caleb Gindl. Steffan Wilson went deep for the 12th time this season with a solo bomb in the top of the fourth inning to make it 4-2, but that was as close as West Virginia would get the rest of the night. The Intimidators scored an insurance run in the sixth inning as Gomes struck again with a two-out RBI single. Miguel Socolovich (1-3) held the Power to a pair of runs on five hits over six innings and got the victory. Henry Mabee (17) pitched two scoreless innings to get the save. Mike Ramlow (2-3) made his first start since April 17th and suffered the loss after he gave up five runs on seven hits over five and two-thirds. Ramlow recovered nicely after the first inning as he sat down nine straight batters after the two-out double to Gomes. Curtis Pasma and Rob Bryson combined to toss two and a third scoreless innings of relief. The Power bullpen has not allowed a run in six and a third innings this series. The Power fell to 33-38 on the year and 1-1 in the second half with the loss, while the Intimidators improved to 32-40 on the year and 1-1 in the second half with the win. Wilson paced the Power with a 2-for-4 performance, extending his hitting streak to six games. Lee Haydel singled in the third inning to extend his hitting streak to seven games. Zelous Wheeler went 0-for-4, bringing his on base streak to an end at 18 games. The Power will continue the five game series against Kannapolis Saturday night. Right hander Amaury Rivas (6-2, 2.89) will get the start for the Power and the Intimidators will counter with right hander Jason Rice (3-5, 5.10). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). West Virginia Box Score No indication yet that LF Eric Fryer is going to head back behind the plate regularly any time soon... 2. I've been following Brevard's Josh Butler's game log all evening. Ugly with a capital "U". The Rays have about a dozen legitimate pitching prospects of varying degrees from spectacular to solid -- somehow Butler was among them, goodness knows how.
  3. 6/20 Jim Powell & Jake Odorizzi, Brewers recently-signed pitcher from the 2008 First-Year Player Draft
  4. 2B Jose Duran and LF Erik Komatsu making their pro debuts with Helena tonight. 3B Edgar Trejo and C Brett Whiteside out of the lineup, as expected -- we'll check out the archived pre-game later on to see if there are injury updates.
  5. Rehabbing LHP Randy Choate is going to get his work in before Sam Narron takes the mound for the Sounds.
  6. Mike Ramlow's success in the Power bullpen (1.53 ERA in 29.1 IP) didn't translate to the first inning of his first start in many weeks (4 R, 5 H). Kannapolis Bottom 1st - Dale Mollenhauer singles on a ground ball to right fielder Caleb Gindl. - Sergio Morales singles on a ground ball to left fielder Eric Fryer. Dale Mollenhauer to 2nd. - Jim Gallagher homers (6) on a fly ball to right field. Dale Mollenhauer scores. Sergio Morales scores. - Mark Fleisher doubles (4) on a line drive to left fielder Eric Fryer. - Logan Johnson grounds out, shortstop Matt Cline to first baseman Curt Rindal. Mark Fleisher to 3rd. - Lee Cruz strikes out swinging. - Anderson Gomes doubles (1) on a ground ball to left fielder Eric Fryer. Mark Fleisher scores. - Matt Inouye flies out to center fielder Lee Haydel. EDIT: But give credit where it's due -- Ramlow has followed up with four hitless innings, still pitching, Power trails, 4-2.
  7. Helena hosts Missoula tonight. A Missoula fan won $10,000 last night with a triple play first inning giveaway. Here's the description of the unique play. Here's the audio link -- go the KMPT June 19th audio at the 24:45 minute mark, the Osprey announcer mentions the giveaway possibility when there were two on and none out. Shortly after that, after an RBI single kept the bases loaded, the triple play described in the link above takes place at the 27:00 mark. "Are You Kidding Me?" from the play-by-play man -- hilarious. I'm not sure he then remembered the $10,000 giveaway until after the commercial break. So if Jim Powell's reading (hi, Jim), he may want to mention tonight that these oddball "giveaway in certain inning deals" sometimes do actually happen.

Odorizzi, who helped lead Highland to the Class 3A state baseball championship, was the 32nd overall pick in the major league draft. "It's getting close," said Jason Wood of Arland Sports, Odorizzi's advisor. "There's still a few details we've got to work out, but it looks pretty promising. We're already above last year's (contract) number, which is positive for the 32nd overall pick." Wood said the 32nd overall pick last year signed for $915,000. Odorizzi, who finished his senior year with a 14-0 pitching record, was a first-team selection on the Chicago Tribune's All-State Baseball Team.

As the official announcement came Thursday that Nashville's Frank Kremblas would manage the Pacific Coast League's team in next month's Triple-A All-Star game, his Sounds owned the worst record in the PCL. "Honestly, I feel like I don't deserve it," said Kremblas, who in 2007 was named the league's manager of the year after leading the Sounds to an 89-55 mark- the best in the PCL - and a third straight division crown. While Nashville has competed for the league title in each of its first three years as the Milwaukee Brewers' top affiliate, though, the team is currently competing to stay out of the league cellar. With Thursday's 6-3 win over visiting Oklahoma, Nashville's 29-45 record matched Tucson's for the worst in the PCL. "The players we have here aren't performing to the level they want to or expect to," Kremblas said prior to the win. "I take some responsibility for that. "I don't feel like I'm doing a very good job this year. For some reason, we've had a bad first (73) games. We're hoping to turn it around." The managers for the major league baseball All-Star game represent the teams that were in the previous year's World Series, and the NBA All-Star game coaches are from the winningest teams in each conference as of a predetermined date. However, there is no established protocol for selection of the Triple-A All-Star managers. From a performance standpoint, Kremblas might have been more worthy of the honor prior to last summer's game. The Sounds took a 55-35 record into the all-star break. "I'm glad we were able last year to execute more consistently," he said. "The mental toughness hasn't been there this year. We've had way too many mental mistakes." Factoring into the Sounds' inconsistency has been an unstable roster. Nashville has undergone 76 transactions this season - an average of more than one per game. The team had 81 regular-season transactions all of last year. Sounds infielder Callix Crabbe, however, thinks Kremblas is being too hard on himself. "It's unfortunate we're not winning for him," said Crabbe, a member of last year's team who returned last month after opening the season with San Diego. "But he's deserving. Forget about coaching, managing: he's a great teacher. He's the best." Along with Kremblas, Sounds trainer Jeff Paxson will be on the PCL staff for the July 16 game in Louisville. The staff will be rounded out by Omaha hitting coach Terry Bradshaw and Sacramento pitching coach Rick Rodriguez. The International League stars will be managed by Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's Dave Miley, who holds the Louisville franchise record for managerial games and victories. Miley, who managed the Sounds for part of the 1992 season, will be assisted by Syracuse Manager Doug Davis and Louisville Manager Rick Sweet.
  15. From the Tennessean: Sounds reliever Jason Shiell was reassigned to Double-A Huntsville prior to Thursday's game. Shiell was 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA in 21 appearances, and opponents were hitting .333 against him.
  16. Link while active, text follows: Gardner gets the job done on the mound By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer Richie Gardner threw seven innings of relief with seven strikeouts - both season highs - Thursday night to pace the Sounds to a 6-3 comeback victory over Oklahoma at Greer Stadium. Taking the mound following a predetermined one-inning start by Derrick Turnbow, Gardner came in with his team trailing 2-1 but virtually shut the door on the RedHawks. Oklahoma managed just one run on four hits, scoring on a fifth-inning John Mayberry double and forcing a 3-3 tie. Brad Nelson snapped the deadlock with a fifth-inning solo home run, and Laynce Nix followed suit in the sixth for a two-run lead before Nashville catcher Vinny Rottino doubled Nelson home in the seventh. "They're really good hitters," Gardner said of the RedHawks, who had won each of the previous 10 games in the season series. "If I made good pitches, I was going to get them out; if I didn't, they were going to get hits. "I trusted Vinny and went with it." Gardner's effort took some pressure off an overworked Sounds bullpen. "We haven't had a fifth starter in a couple of weeks and we've had a couple of doubleheaders," Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas said. "It was very big that he was able to go seven." Moves continue to mount: The Sounds pitching staff's revolving door kept spinning Thursday, as Randy Choate joined the team on a rehab assignment prior to the game against Oklahoma. The veteran left-handed reliever broke his left hand during spring training and has been on the Milwaukee Brewers' disabled list for the entire season. He made a one-inning, 14-pitch rehab start Tuesday for Class A Brevard County. Meanwhile, Brewers reliever David Riske was activated from the disabled list Thursday following his one-inning rehab start Tuesday for the Sounds. To make room for Riske (shoulder) on the roster, veteran pitcher Julian Tavarez was designated for assignment. Also, Eric Gagne is likely to make a rehab appearance with the Sounds next week as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury. Offense offensive: The Sounds entered Thursday's game with a .234 batting average, 10 home runs and five wins (in 18 games) during June - all Pacific Coast League lows for the month. Catching up: Solo home runs by Brad Nelson (fifth inning) and Laynce Nix (sixth) were the 10th of the year for each player, tying them for second among current Sounds players. Brendan Katin's 11 homers are tops. Russell Branyan hit 12 homers prior to his May 25 call-up by the Brewers. Since joining Milwaukee, Branyan has hit 10 homers (in 20 games).

Link while active, text follows: Manatees nip D-Cubs By SEAN KERNAN Daytona News-Journal Staff Writer DAYTONA BEACH -- The first game of the second half for the Daytona Cubs turned out the same as the opening game of the first half. The visiting Brevard County Manatees took the second-half opener 3-2 Thursday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, where both teams opened the season on April 3 and the Milwaukee Brewers farm club came away an 8-6 winner. Brevard County speedster Darren Ford bunted for a hit, went first-to-third on a single by Lorenzo Cain and scored on Jonathan Lucroy's sacrifice fly to right field to break a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning. "(Ford) is quick and fast," Cubs manager Jody Davis said. "He can come up there and tell you he's going to bunt. (The third baseman) can't come up any closer than Mota was. Ford is unbelievably quick." The Cubs (35-36 overall, 0-1 in second half) nearly tied it again in the ninth after Mark Reed's third hit of the game. Reed singled to center, went to second on a wild pitch and was ready to round third and head for home on Darwin Barney's single up the middle until Manatees shortstop Brent Brewer got a glove on the ball and kept it from reaching the outfield. "At first I thought it was through," Reed said. "I saw (Davis) waving me. That's the only reason I thought I was scoring, because the play was behind me, and then he held me. It was just one of those things. (Brewer) made a play that saved the game." Brevard County closer Mike McClendon then coaxed Tony Thomas into a game-ending double play. The Cubs had double-digit hits for the eighth straight game, but scored only two runs despite having 10 hits. Daytona had runners reach third base four times with less than two outs and didn't score. One time, with Reed on third, Daytona tried a suicide squeeze that failed. Barney had no chance getting the bat on a slider in the dirt and Reed was caught in a rundown. "It's a do-or-die play. It was a good call," Reed said. "The pitch was just down in the dirt. You can't bunt that ball. The catcher picked it out of the dirt and got me. A little kick away and I score." Davis shook his head when thinking about the Cubs' many opportunities. "We had our chances, but we didn't get them in," Davis said. "That's the difference in one-run ballgames. They needed a run, they got a bunt hit, a bloop single and a sacrifice fly."
  19. To listen to the Brett Whiteside injury call, use the same link as in the prior post, then go to the 01:32:00 hour/minute mark for Whiteside's base hit, and then the subsequent ground ball force out. There was no evidence of an injury in Steve Wendt's initial call. Steve mentions Whiteside going back to the clubhouse with the trainer as the top of the 6th opens at the 01:45:00 hour/minute mark.
  20. Listen to Edgar Trejo's injury situation from the game last night -- does not sound good for the very promising youngster, unfortunately. He went down in a heap while he was executing a rundown play, and was carried off the field by trainers from both squads. The trainers were trying to stretch his leg, and were focused on his left knee. Voice of the H-Crew Steve Wendt then explains that Jose Duran has not quite cleared his physical. The box score was incorrect. Logan Schafer was inserted in center field, John Delaney played third base, and Cutter Dykstra played second. Delaney's fine, and no left-handed third baseman. But the focus is on Edgar Trejo at this point. Go to the KCAP audio archive for June 19th, then browse to the 02:53:00 hour/minute mark

  22. Final: Great Falls (White Sox) 6, Helena 5 Link while active, text follows: Brewers fall to Voyagers 6-5 By JEFF WINDMUELLER - Helena Independent Record The Helena Brewers made one final stand Thursday night, but the home team just couldn't hold up. Helena scored three runs and loaded the bases three times in the ninth inning, but Cutter Dykstra and Mike Vass went down swinging as the Brewers (0-3) dropped their third straight in their opening series with the Great Falls Voyagers 6-5. The Brewers needed the comeback after Mark Willinsky gave up a two-run homer in the eighth to Nick Mahin of Great Falls (3-0). The ball soared over the center field wall to give Great Falls a 3-2 lead. One inning later, Mahin crushed a triple off the left field wall to bring in Kenny Williams before scoring the winning run himself on a wild pitch by Brewers closer Jorge Crespo. Mahin harassed Helena's pitchers all game, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk. The Brewers were down, but not out, as they headed into the bottom of the ninth. Chris Dennis walked, Brock Kjeldgaard singled to left field and Corey Kemp lined another one to the right to load the bases and bring the Brewers dugout, and the faithful fans left from the 968 that made up the crowd, to their feet. Suddenly, the Brewers were trusting in two players who weren't even scheduled to bat that night. Derrick Alfonso came in as catcher after Brett Whiteside pulled up lame heading into second in the fifth inning. Meanwhile, Logan Schafer took to the field in the sixth after Edgar Trejo apparently rolled his ankle chasing down a runner at third. Neither one seemed nervous when they headed to the plate. Alfonso brought in Dennis with a single to right before Schafer hit a fielder's choice to first base, bringing the score to 6-4. The Voyagers replaced pitcher Drew O'Neil with Daniel Albritton, but the closer couldn't stop the momentum. At least not yet. John Delaney walked and Michael Marseco, the smallest Brewer on the field at just 5-foot-9, 145 pounds, played as big as anyone else, hitting a flair to right field that allowed Kemp to score. With one out and the bases loaded, however, Albritton turned up the heat. He had an 0-2 count on Dykstra before the Brewer fought back to make it 3-2. On his final swing, Dykstra pulled just under a fastball for the second out. Vass couldn't top Great Falls' closer either, swinging on high heat on a 2-2 pitch to end the game. "That showed me something, I was very proud of that comeback and I hope they are as well," said Brewers manager Rene Gonzales. "But the things that got us in trouble are just the fundamental stuff. We just need to tighten up on that. "I think that will come the more we play with each other and the more we get to know each other." Dykstra finished 2-for-5 to lead the Brewers at the plate. Albritton finished with the save while Joshua Billeaud (1-0) pitched for the win. Willinsky ended up with the loss, though he and starter Michael Bowman both had impressive moments through the first seven innings. Bowman gave up just one run on three hits, striking out five and walking two in the first four innings. Willinsky, who came in and immediately sent three away in the fifth, went 3 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and striking out three. Willinsky's first three outs went down in just eight pitches, all of them over the plate. Trejo and Marseco both scored in the fifth to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead. Helena remains at home as they host the Missoula Osprey for a three-game series before hitting the road. Trey Watten is scheduled to start for the Brewers while Miles Reagan will pitch for the Osprey. The first pitch is expected at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central). Helena Box Score In the top of the 9th, Logan Schafer, making his pro debut, went in defensively for Edgar Trejo after Trejo's foot / ankle injury -- oddity here, as Schafer throws left-handed, so he'll always remember that; if Trejo can't play tonight, the Brewers really need 6th rounder Jose Duran to make his debut, they have no other infielders ready; also, at that point in the 9th with two outs, there was an arbitrary switch between second baseman John Delaney and center fielder Cutter Dykstra after a play at second base -- you wonder if Delaney got dinged and the Brewers had no choice there with no subs available, we'll see if the audio provides a hint; Great Falls was 6-for-6 stealing bases (one pickoff) vs. the staff and catchers Brett Whiteside and Derrick Alfonso... Helena Game Log Photos by Lisa Kunkel, Helena IR staff photographer - Helena Brewers' Edgar Trejo steals second base as a wild throw flies over Great Falls' Tyler Kuhn during Pioneer League action Thursday night at Kindrick Legion Field.
