  1. Callix Crabbe goes boom, psyched for him. That Thatcher kid is pretty good, huh? Counsell smoked that triple off the other Padres' rookie lefty.
  2. Ken Rosenthal at Fox Sports: The Rays ideally want to replace Rocco Baldelli with a switch-hitter who could provide strong late-inning defense in right field and back up B.J. Upton in center. The Angels' Reggie Willits fits that description, but is said to be unavailable. Free agent Kenny Lofton and the Brewers' Gabe Gross are among the left-handed hitting possibilities. The Blue Jays' Reed Johnson, a right-handed hitter, also might fit, but many clubs view him as an injury risk. The Mets like Johnson, but would prefer an outfielder with more power.
  3. Same independent league team as Charlie Iacono (two posts above): Beach Bums Ink Ex-Brewer Prospect J.T. King The Traverse City (Michigan) Beach Bums have announced the signing of right-handed pitcher J.T. King to a 2008 contract. King is 6'2" 210-pounds and a native of Grove, Oklahoma, and attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Junior College He was drafted in the 22nd round of the 2006 MLB draft by the Milwaukee Brewers out of Junior College and spent the past two seasons pitching in their organization. In 2007, King pitched with the West Virginia Power of the South Atlantic League (as a side note, former Beach Bums Field Manager Jeff Isom will be the new manager of the West Virginia Power in 2008). For the Power, King had an 8-2 record and 4.67 ERA in 31 appearances, including two starts, going 61.2 innings with 26 walks and 34 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .282 average. In King's two starts he had a 3.24 ERA in 8.1 innings while holding opponents to a .191 average. King's success at the low-A level should translate very well at the Frontier League level. LHP Zac Cline, who was an All-Star for Slippery Rock in 2007 with a 10-6 record and 3.10 ERA, had a 5.08 ERA in the South Atlantic League in 2006. We believe King has All-Star potential as a starting pitcher in our league, and since he was drafted as a sophomore out of Junior College, he is only 23 years old and with some success, stands a good chance of drawing some notice from other MLB organizations.
  4. Latest blog entry includes the following: Most importantly however I got to see Luis Pena close ofF the Dbacks in person today. Wouldn't be right for me to copy and paste the rest, but it's a nice paragraph, check it out. Luis will find a rightful place on the Power 50 again come April 1st, and Brian Anderson and Kent Sommerfield were discussing his omission from the Baseball America / Tom Haudricourt Top 10 Brewer list as he pitched on Thursday. I did chuckle when Kent said that Tom had seen as many minor league games as they had in recent years. Tom did visit Huntsville a few years back for the Fielder / Weeks season and filed reports, but there is some truth to Kent's comment. I do imagine Tom spends more time around minor league camp than Bill this time of year, however.
  5. Canada Is Going to Beijing Congrats to Taylor Green, Alex Periard and the rest of the Canadian players. Beijing this summer -- that's going to be huge for those guys, Opening Cermonies, etc. Former Brewer farmhand LHP Mike Kusiewicz (High Desert, 2004) played a big role today as the link indicates.
  6. Canada Makes Easy Work of Spain TAICHUNG, Taiwan - After an emotional game against Chinese Taipei, Canada came out swinging and shut down Spain defensively in coasting to a 11-0 win in seven innings at the Final Olympic Qualifer. Aaron Wideman (Mississauga, ON) was at his best, going four innings and giving up only three hits in his start for Canada. "It felt good today. It was a feeling of comfort today," says Wideman. "It relieves so much stress for a pitcher to go out there and be comfortable and with this group of guys the comfort level is through the roof." Alexandre Periard (St. Eustache, QC) was just as effective in relief, allowing only one hit with two strikeouts in the remaining three innings of the game. "I was just trying to get the first pitch strike today, get my pitches down in the zone and pound the ball inside. It felt pretty good," says Periard. Full story at link, no Taylor Green mention...
  7. Canaries Add Outfielder Bibbs http://canariesbaseball.com.ismmedia.com/ISM2/NewsManager/659.jpeg.300.jpegMarch 12, 2008 - SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries of the independent American Association have signed outfielder Kennard Bibbs, who will be Sioux Falls bound for the Canaries training camp beginning on April 23. Bibbs began his professional baseball career when he was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 14th round of the 2002 MLB Draft. Bibbs worked his way up through the Brewers organization, landing in Triple-A with the Nashville Sounds in 2006. An off-season knee injury kept Bibbs from playing in 2007, but he will begin his comeback with the Canaries this summer. Bibbs is a career .273 hitter with 155 stolen bases in five seasons.
  8. OK, I see now. We mentioned this after the Baseball America post, it is a youngster, I'm in the midst of adding the latest Latin youngsters we've mentioned in other threads to our Player Index. Orton Rodriguez is only 18 years old (turns 19 in September). He's 6'2", 187, and a RH bat. He's out of Puerto Rico (related to Pudge? Probably not, he certainly has a bigger body frame, but maybe).
  9. OK, this time there is an archive of the March 8th show, courtesy of Sports Bubbler: Talkin' Brewers from 3/08/08
  10. It's the first of Lou's three options, as he doesn't "have" to make the squad (without options) until spring 2011. The reason for optioning him today, as I'm sure we'll read later, was today was the last day to option him without major league service time accumulating. So Palmisano will earn his 40-man roster salary, but not the big league minimum of $390,000 while sidelined.
  11. They also have minor league free agents Munhall and Rodriguez. Bork, who is the Rodriguez you're referring to? Thanks.
  12. Can someone give any sort of update, or recap as to what has happened so far? The last few days Gameday is keeping up with the action nicely....
  13. The Traverse City (Michigan) Beach Bums of the independent Frontier League have announced the signing of outfielder Charles Iacono to a 2008 contract. Iacono comes to the Beach Bums after spending the past two seasons playing in the Milwaukee Brewers organization. In 2007, Iacono played for the Arizona League Brewers, where he hit finished in the top five in the league in several offensive categories including walks (2nd - 45), stolen bases (2nd - 30), runs (5th - 38), and on-base percentage (5th - .413). In two seasons in professional baseball, Iacono has scored 55 runs, drawn 60 walks, and stolen 46 bases in only 82 games. "Iacono was one of the fastest guys in the Brewers entire organization," said Beach Bums Director of Baseball Operations Jason Wuerfel. "The numbers he has put up in pro ball speak for themselves. He knows how to get on base, make things happen, and score runs. In the outfield, his speed and defensive ability will be a big boost to our ball club." The 5'8" 170-pound Iacono was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2006 after finishing his career at the College of New Jersey, where he hit .349 with 59 runs scored, 48 stolen bases, and 28 walks in just 46 games his senior season. Iacono's offensive totals in runs scored and stolen bases ranked him 22nd and 5th respectively in NCAA Division III.
  14. Not a Rookie: Corey Hart Fails to mention that 2003 was a league MVP season (thanks to Miguel Cabrera's call-up), but otherwise a fine recap.
  15. Am I missing something? These look like just the 2007 archives. I've lost my mind. Carry on, please http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gif .
  16. Uecker talks about it on the radio all the time It's in reference to Bob's non-technological side, kind of like when he would joke about being all over "Davey's Diary" each spring, or "oogling" instead of "googling" this spring. One day, Bob joked that he was pulling up information on his "Pocket Doppler" and didn't need a laptop. It's mushroomed into a semi-regular running gag since, especially as it relates to weather forecasts.
  17. RHP Jon Huizinga (Beloit, 2003) has kept his pro career alive in independent ball ever since. He just signed with the Calgary Vipers of the Golden Baseball League this week.
  18. Team Canada lost to Australia Sunday, but defeated Chinese Taipei in a wild one today. The Canadians are now 3-1 in the six-team tourney, so are looking good for the Olympics barring a collapse. No mention of Taylor Green yet, and without box scores, no word on how many AB's he's had, if any.
  19. Not sure about the need for the long quote, since your comments alone would have pushed along the conversation nicely. We're trying to make that point everywhere within our forums, but I'll get off that soapbox for now. I'm pretty sure that teams place guys on waivers hoping to sneak them through occasionally, and in two instances, other organizations were willing to snap him up. Are you saying you are EXCITED about him? No, I stand by my original statement -- "yes, you can be cautiously optimistic he could be a future contributor".
  20. Woogie has been linking to the Gameday all spring long. Doesn't that take away the need for the play-by-play in the thread for everyone?
  21. yes. how many times has the guy been released? He's not Steve Carlton. One. Just because he's been with several organizations, doesn't mean he's been released. Only his final outright by the Cardinals could be considered as such... Drafted - Selected by St. Louis Cardinals in 2nd Round (53rd overall) of 2000 amateur entry draft (June-Reg) Jun 27,2000 - signed Aug 11,2004 - Claimed on waivers by Rockies from Cardinals Mar 30,2005 - Traded by Rockies with cash to Red Sox for Byung-Hyun Kim. Aug 9,2005 - Claimed off waivers by Cardinals from Red Sox Why did the question require a reference to one of the best 2-3 southpaws of all time? The kid's 26; yes, you can be cautiously optimistic he could be a future contributor -- how's that?
  22. Here's all your archives, including last Saturday, pretty much buried on the Brewers' site, but we'll take 'em however we can get 'em, right? Sounds like the first few minutes with Dan O'Brien were cut off this week.
  23. Unfortunately, not a single Brewer affiliate is included in the top 64 according to this tournament -- Manny the Manatee got jobbed! CNBC's Minor League Baseball Logo Contest--Day One--Voting Begins!
  24. Several Brewer alums have been re-assigned to their respective minor league camps in recent days, such as Ben Hendrickson today with the Royals. Rather than list all of those moves, alumni updates will be limited to any releases or changes in organization during spring training -- once the season starts, a fresh Alumni Thread with updated player info will be posted.
