The three longer-form Brewers podcasts that got me through my pre-Memorial Day yardwork (still in catch-up mode): Monday 5/22:Latest Milwaukee Tailgate Podcast - "The guys discussed a rough road trip, the continued issues against LHP, Willy Adames future, where pitching help might come from and the strangeness of the Trop." Via the Journal Sentinel Podcast: "The Brewers go 2-4 on a tough road trip and dig out the two wins thanks to some big-time work from Devin Williams and the relief crew. It's the latest in a tough run for the Brewers. Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe look at the dearth of difference-makers and if there are any moves that can realistically ease the burden, the latest injury setbacks (Wade Miley, Luke Voit) and the struggles of Willy Adames (although Sunday turned out to be a great day). It's going to be the Brewers vs. the Cardinals for a playoff spot again, isn't it? Does the addition of Darin Ruf mean Luke Voit's roster spot is in jeopardy? Owen Miller is on fire. Is there any scenario where Jackson Chourio gets to the big leagues in 2023? Plus, a Remembrew When that looks back at the most famous dropped ball in Brewers history. Then, JR is joined by Bally Sports Wisconsin broadcaster Sophia Minnaert, in her 11th year working games for Bally Sports Wisconsin. They chat about her media background, where her renown Spanish skills come from and what makes the baseball gig so special." *** Friday 5/26: Reviewing the Brew's" Cold Brew Podcast: "Co-hosts David Gasper and Matt Carroll discuss the latest in a big stretch of Brewers news. Former All Star Julio Teheran is now in a Brewers uniform and had an excellent debut as the starting rotation is reeling from several more injuries. Some players are on the mend though as Luis Urias has begun a rehab assignment, but once he returns, who gets sent off the roster to make room? It'll be a tough choice as David and Matt work through the options. Also Rob Manfred is in Milwaukee and there are reported threats that the Brewers could relocate if the government doesn't meet their funding obligation for maintenance. How much stock should we put in these threats?"

  6. Released on April 25th -- INF Luis Watter turned 20 years old this past January. The Dominican native was part of the July 2019 signing class but then had to delay his pro debut until 2021 due to the pandemic. Over the past two summers, Watter posted a .649 OPS and was successful in 21 of 23 stolen base attempts. Watter only slugged .300, but one of his ten XBH's in 230 pro AB's was a home run. Watter had signed for $35,000. He was listed at 5'8", but that was at the time of his contract signing as a 16-year-old. *** UPDATE: Congrats to Luis! Signed on 5/23 by the Tigers, still at the DSL level for now.

  13. You'll notice our headline focuses on two of the four Milwaukee affiliates, and you'd be correct in assuming things didn't go quite as well for their counterparts as Biloxi and Carolina fell. There are always individual performances to highlight, however, and you'll see that happen throughout this latest version of our daily recap. Here we go! Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic TRANSACTIONS: - INF Luis Urias sent to AAA Nashville on rehab assignment - RHP Kaleb "Bo" Bowman promoted to AA Biloxi from High-A Wisconsin - RHP Harold Chirino placed on AA Biloxi's 7-day injured list - SS Daniel Guilarte placed on Low-A Carolina's 7-day injured list - RHP Patricio Aquino placed on Low-A Carolina's 7-day injured list - 2B/3B Alexander Perez promoted to Low-A Carolina from ACL Brewers Final: Nashville 13, Iowa (Cubs) 2 Via the Sounds' site, we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of your season-long Link Report routine: Sounds Torch I-Cubs For 13 Runs - Nashville rides big nights from Dorrian, Singleton to 13-2 win Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Game Log It's our daily review of the Brewers' minor league system, but these major league rehab assignments are of importance. As was noted in the game summary you just reviewed: Luis Urias went 0-for-4 in his first game on rehab assignment and made a great sliding play at third base. Luke Voit reached three times in the fourth game of his rehab assignment. Voit is hitting .100 (1-for-10) with a .500 on-base percentage for Nashville. Seven walks and a HBP get Voit to the .500 OBP. In 19 games this month, Jon Singleton's line is .284/.398/.554 (.952 OPS). Singleton's status in the organization remains hinged on Rowdy Tellez' health, but he'd be a very suitable fill-in if needed, 40-man roster spot necessary. It hasn't been glamorous, but OF Blake Perkins' Nashville tenure has been subtly effective through 30 games, .292/.377/.425 (.802 OPS). RHP Pedro Fernandez celebrated his last day of being 28 years old with the quality start. A reminder that his only professional regular season outings between 2019 and 2022 were 13 Mexican league games (unaffiliated) in 2019, a very unique success story this season. LHP Clayton Andrews has a strong rooting following among Brewers' prospect-watchers, but there's such a long line of 40-man roster relievers at this time, and Andrews isn't among them. The Brewers still have another year of control in 2024 over the plucky and talented southpaw. Final: Montgomery (Rays) 7, Biloxi 3 Via the Shuckers' site: Lamar Sparks Smashes First Homer of Year in 7-3 Loss to Biscuits - Shuckers, Biscuits split first two games of a six-game set at MGM Park Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Game Log A reminder to frequent the archived pre-game interview page - Development Coach Christian Correa and OF Tristen Lutz are recent additions. LHP Nick Bennett's chat will be added by end-of-day Thursday. Biloxi bats fanned 16 times, and we all look forward to the return of traditional muddied baseballs in the season's second half. So frustrating not being able to get accurate scouting reads on both sides of the ball. There are six players on the big-league 40-man roster by way of the 60-day IL, including fairly-soon-to-return Luis Urias. That means players will have to come off the 40-man as players return, and RH reliever Cam Robinson is not aiding his own cause in making sure his spot is secure. Robinson's performance prompted a bit of discussion posts within our nightly gameday thread. Despite just one walk and one HBP, Biscuit batters drove RHP Justin Jarvis' pitch count to 97, limiting him to five innings. RH reliever Robbie Baker's age 28 season has been strong through 12 appearances. Jackson Chourio is 0-for-14 (three walks) in his last four games, .675 OPS on the season. Final: Wisconsin 4, Cedar Rapids (Twins) 2, ten innings Via the Timber Rattlers' site: Gray’s Homer Lifts Rattlers Past Cedar Rapids in Extras - Wisconsin wins 4-2 over Kernels in ten innings for second straight win Pre-Game Media Notes (Download Link) via the team's Virtual Press Box Box Score / Game Log Everyone in the starting lineup reached base at least once. Catcher Alex Hall singled twice and walked. All four hurlers were effective as the box (and final score) indicate. This was a much-needed performance for 21-year-old RHP Alexander Cornielle, flashing the form from a few of his April starts. It is so easy to overlook just how young the international signings still are when they make their way to full-season affiliates. RH reliever Brannon Jordan turns 25 in July and should have no difficulty moving into the closer role vacated by promoted Kaleb "Bo" Bowman. Jordan (2021 9th round, University of South Carolina) has a sub-1.00 WHIP and was among the Crew prospects in Australia this past winter. Final: Down East (Rangers) 5, Carolina 4 Early Error Proves Costly in 5-4 Loss to Down East - Jose Sibrian hit his first home run of the season in the loss Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Game Log The Wood Ducks are the Mudcats' Lex Luthor. Our playoff-starved affiliate needs to bounce back in this series to avoid losing ground in the first-half division race. Switch-hitting 18-year-old CF Luis Lara doubled, singled, and walked, and as one of our thread posters astutely noted, has an eye-popping K-to-BB ratio, or as we should note, BB-to-K ratio. If you rundown that position player lineup in the box score, you'll see that once again (harking back to 2022), nine are natives of Venezuela. RF Kay-lan Nicasia was born in the Netherlands and drafted out of a Florida high school. Of all the healthy position players currently on the Carolina roster, only 3B Luke Adams and OF Jace Avina were born in the U.S. On the flip side, among the 15 healthy pitchers, only five are products of the international scene (three Dominican Republic, two Venezuela). Eight oft-injured years in the system for catcher Jose Sibrian (includes losing the pandemic season), yet the defensive stalwart is only in his age-24 campaign. This was career home run #7: It's all about young guns on the mound Thursday - Robert Gasser for Nashville, still-just-24-year-old Tobias Myers in Biloxi, Edwin Jimenez and his shiny Midwest League ERA for Wisconsin, and Jacob Misiorowski before the home crowd in Zebulon. We're going to welcome back our @Joseph Zarr for the next two evenings after a brief stint on the inactive list (he's fine, his internet wasn't!). 18. If you're settling in to relieve yourself from Brewer big-league woes by checking in on what happened Saturday down on the farm, then well, you can probably tell you're about to be disappointed via the subject line here. Apparently misery does love company. We strive to highlight the positive within each and every day's collection of games. Saturday's contests proved particularly challenging. That being said, don't give up now, it's still a worthwhile visit. So enjoy! (Not the right word choice...) Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic TRANSACTIONS: - RHP Colin Rea recalled to MLB Brewers from AAA Nashville (replacing injured JB Bukauskas)- 1B Luke Voit sent on rehab assignment to AAA Nashville Final: Durham (Rays) 5, Nashville 3 Via the Sounds' site, we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of your season-long Link Report routine: Sounds Come Up Short in Durham - Despite Sounds comeback, Bulls walk off Nashville 5-3 Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Game Log Was able to watch LH reliever Darrell Thompson's performance live, he is incredible, doing this on just 20 pitches! (I realize there is no video included here, but it's posted to note that Devin Williams' Twitter handle is @DTrainn_23 - future bullpen mates.) Then, for the just the 2nd time this year (once in Biloxi), Thompson was asked to pitch into a 3rd inning. So this was the result, on the very first pitch following a walk on a 3-2 count. Yeah, it was crushed, but the fact remains, Thompson is going to be a key member of this organization for some time to come. Hey, Luke Voit is in Nashville within days of his, "clears throat", neck strain. So it becomes a work-out-the-kinks rehab assignment, and Voit reached base three times on two walks and a HBP. He only had one at-bat vs. a LHP, and sure enough, he K'd. The HBP occurred in the 9th, and Voit was pinch-run for, no indication of further injury. You'll enjoy this interview with LHP Ethan Small. I did. Final: Chattanooga (Reds) 12, Biloxi 2 Via the Shuckers' site: Lookouts Tally Six Extra-Base Hits, Defeat Shuckers 12-2 - Jason Lopez smashes his first home run of the year in the loss Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Game Log 7th consecutive loss. SS Freddy Zamora's defensive struggles tend to come in bunches (three errors here). However, that only brings his total to seven on the season. Off night. Speaking of errors, though the game summary indicates Jackson Chourio was charged with one in the 4th, the box score doesn't reflect that. The camera work disappoints on this throw, and thankfully Zavier Warren reconsidered cutting it off: We have to refer to it at some point. The Shuckers struck out 20 times. 20! Sticky Southern League baseballs doing funky things or not, that's not good. We have notified the awesome authority on such madness, The Athletic's Jayson Stark. Just-turned 24-year-old RHP Christian Mejias' starting pitcher line is marred even further when you factor in the three HBP's embedded in the box score. Rough outing. As promised yesterday, the pre-game audio with Manager Mike Guerrero is available, and by mid-day Sunday, look for RH reliever Cam Robinson's chat via the same link. Final: Quad Cities (Royals) 5, Wisconsin 4 Via the Timber Rattlers' site: Bandits Hold on to Beat Wisconsin - Rattlers fall just short in comeback attempt Pre-Game Media Notes (Download Link) via the team's Virtual Press Box Box Score / Game Log 6th consecutive loss, T-Rats now 11-26 despite a noble effort here. Despite the loss, the always-worthwhile postgame podcast with Voice of the Rattlers Chris Mehring, Kyle Lobner, and Manager Joe Ayrault can be found here. On the surface, LHP Russell Smith's one earned run allowed in three innings of relief looks fine, but there were five walks and three wild pitches within. I've personally been harsher than I usually comment on Smith, but we have yet to see anything in his pro career that gets us excited about being a 51st overall pick (Texas Christian, 2021). And sorry, 51st overall picks get less slack. WHIP is 1.85, Smith turns 25 in September, yet to sniff AA Biloxi. But no cigar below... Final: Kannapolis (White Sox) 3, Carolina 2 Carolina Drops Second Straight 3-2 in Kannapolis - Logan Henderson struck out seven over three innings in Saturday’s loss Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Game Log Let's not fret on the still-in-first-place Mudcats with their effort here. Speaking of high 2021 draft picks (see Russell Smith, above), this is our best look yet at RHP Logan Henderson, the 4th round JUCO who has starred primarily in the glowing pre-draft reports but not on actual Milwaukee affiliate mounds. This was only the 9th appearance by Henderson, all short starts, spread between Maryvale and Carolina, and just the second this year. Listed at 5'11" (maybe?), Henderson's lower base is notable, there is some heft to those thighs and backside. That's fine, we look forward to a healthy stretch-out and a bright future. Congrats to 3B Jheremy Vargas on his 2nd inning RBI double. Across 29 at-bats with RISP across the entire night of MKE affiiate games, Vargas had the only base hit. Read that sobering last sentence again. For the first time in 32 games of full-season ball, second baseman Daniel Guilarte failed to reach base. This Link Reporter is heading out on a needed getaway (happy wife, happy life!), hoping the Shuckers and Timber Rattlers can snap their combined 0-for-13 losing ways Sunday, when all four contests have traditional afternoon start times. I'll be lurking, but until next time, thanks for visiting.
