TRANSACTIONS: - RHP Tyson Miller optioned to AAA Nashville from MLB Brewers- LHP Wade Miley and DH/1B Jesse Winker reinstated to MLB Brewers from MILB rehab assignments- OF Lamar Sparks placed on 7-day injured list by AA Biloxi, retroactive to 6/16- RHP Samuel Dario placed on 7-day injured list by ACL Brewers Final: Nashville 7, Gwinnett (Braves) 4 Via the Sounds' site, we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of your season-long Link Report routine: Sounds Strike Early For Fifth Straight Win Over Stripers - Sal Frelick homers, tallies 4 RBI as Nashville rolls Gwinnett 7-4 Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Game Log This quote-filled, video-filled article came in during the overnight and is super-encouraging: Cam Devanney with a 4-for-4 night, looks bigger than his listed 6'1", 195. Finally healthy and getting into a groove, the 26-year-old (.999 OPS in 13 June games) profiles as the type of utility hitter with pop that makes up the majority of big-league lineups. The Brewers still maintain 2024 and 2025 control over Devanney, it's just a matter of opportunity for him. In 37 small-sample 2023 AB's vs LHB, Devanney is at .378/.395/.649 (1.044). Cam is Mike Brosseau without the 40-man roster spot and the infamous Aroldis Chapman at-bat. We need to realize that starting RHP Janson Junk was not acquired in the Hunter Renfroe trade to dazzle, and this was a classic example of dropping the word "solid" in describing his start. It's all fine, but will Junk's type of "solid" (39 K's in 61.2 IP) ever translate to a big-league mound? Thank you, Elvis Peguero, for the five-to-six years of effective bullpen work you are primed to provide the Crew, courtesy of that same deal. Final: Montgomery 6, Biloxi 4 Via the Shuckers' site: Biloxi Drops Heartbreaker to Montgomery on Walk-off Homer - Montgomery mounts a four-run rally over the final three innings after the Shuckers take a 4-2 lead Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Game Log Outfielder Carlos D. Rodriguez has a pretty swing and a 26-to-22 K-to-BB mark in his first AA campaign at age 22. Surprised at the age? A very early career start, but the SLG, which peaked at .415 in 142 pre-season-ending injury Timber Rattler AB's in 2022, is only .344 in 2023 and this video confirms that Rodriguez' frame may never allow for sufficient pop to justify long-term success at higher levels. There are aspects of talent to be sure. RHP Tobias Myers faced 19-year-old super-talented infielder Junior Caminero, he of the .330/.383/.543 line between High-A and AA this year. Caminero was 1-for-3 vs. Myers, who was traded by the Rays to the Guardians for Caminero in November of 2021. Myers then went on to have a well-documented epic disaster of a 2022 and is now trying to right his baseball journey with the Crew. The Rays do this so often, remember the Caminero name, Guardians fans will. Sorry Tyler Black, reaching on catcher's interference does not extend an on-base streak. If you wish to click, here's a home run by ol' friend Tristan Peters, 23 years old and the Biscuits' 3-hole hitter, as well as the unfortunate walkoff tater. Final: Great Lakes (Dodgers) 5, Wisconsin 4 Via the Timber Rattlers' site: Wisconsin Falls 5-4 at Great Lakes - Loons hold off late rally from Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes (Download Link) via the team's Virtual Press Box *Actually, those are already the Sunday Media Notes, Chris Mehring doing early work this morning Box Score / Game Log Great Lakes doesn't tweet home game highlights regularly (or at all), so a reminder how blessed we are in that perspective with the T-Rats. So much credit to Manager Joe Ayrault and this group, at the tail end of a long two-week journey and battling a now 42-19 Dodgers' affiliate valiantly all week. In this one, the Rattlers outhit the Loons, Wisconsin pitchers walked fewer and K'd more than their counterparts. The whole not placing Eric Brown Jr. (thumb) on the 7-day IL at any point is a bit odd (last played June 3rd, now two weeks missed). The infield outside of first base has been Ben Metzinger - Eduardo Garcia - Robert Moore throughout this stretch, with Jose Acosta the lone player on the short bench capable of assisting. LF Terence Doston is a useful outfield piece in helping Ayrault navigate his outfield rotation. The 22-year-old clearly has to find a way to bump the SLG aspect of his game, but he has contributed when asked. Final: Augusta (Braves) 7, Carolina 6, ten innings Mudcats Fall in Extras 7-6 to GreenJackets - Jheremy Vargas drove in three runs while going 2-for-5 with a double in the loss Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Game Log The Mudcats were up 5-2 after three innings but would only add the one 8th-inning run, not enough. Carrying over from Friday - Lara could have had a 2nd hit, but this slice job to left-center was tracked down. 22-year-old RHP Will Rudy's line of 4.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR pushed his pitch count to 86 (52 strikes). Overall for the staff, four of the runs allowed were unearned due to three errors by 1B Jesus Chirinos. We documented Chirinos' winter league success in Venezuela on a daily basis, but to say it didn't translate to his 2023 Wisconsin and now-Carolina tenures would be a massive understatement. Carolina did nothing with the 10th inning ghost runner (Jace Avina and Kay-Lin Nicasia strikeouts, and a Blayberg Diaz groundout). It's been said before, but not yet this year - I completely understand when the game summaries at all the levels (perhaps a bit less so at AAA where players are more battle-tested), gloss over who failed to come through in big situations. Generic example: "the team loaded the bases with no outs but failed to cash in after two popouts and a K". I do tend to immediately dig into the game log to see who came up short, even if we focus on the positive in our daily reports when we can. Baseball is hard, but it's not the end of the world for the occasional call-out, even the youngsters in A-ball. The best will bounce back. Unfortunately, the walkoff loss came with two outs (video), close to extending it to the 11th. Final: ACL Brewers 7, ACL Cubs 6 Box Score / Game Log Second consecutive win over the Cublets for the 7-2 Maryvale club. How crowded is the dugout and bullpen on a sunny 95-degree day? Keeping in mind three rehabbers are on-site (Keston Hiura, Josh VanMeter and Jason Alexander), five players came off the Maryvale bench. And even with that, nine other position players remained on the bench. Talk about a daily juggling act for Manager Rafael Neda and his two (of each, six in all) pitching, batting and development coaches. Four pitchers saw action. Twelve other arms remained available (not including Alexander). Two players on the active roster but yet to debut - one is Alberis Ferrer, who saw plenty of action with Carolina last summer and was only activated from the 60-day IL when the Arizona League began play. He is listed among the Maryvale bullpen arms now, so we may see the 22-year-old infielder on a mound here for the first time soon. This is already Ferrer's 6th pro season (includes the lost 2020). Outfielder Luis Castillo, who was bumped to Carolina from Arizona for August and September last year, also is yet to debut, he is still listed as a position player. Back to the game, 19-year-old LH reliever Anfernny Reyes (we love our southpaws) is finding stateside success, as he's tossed scoreless ball in his first three appearances. The Brewers were successful on 6-of-8 SB attempts, with six players netting a steal apiece. Had forgotten that another 6th year player, OF Reidy Mercado, was needed to assist at the High-A level with Wisconsin for 22 games back in 2022 (.489 OPS, all 17 hits singles). Off to a .976 OPS through six games, maybe he makes his way to Carolina for the first time soon. Mercado has logged time in Phoenix since 2019, he surely knows all the best spots in town by now. I didn't really break down how this game flowed, choosing to highlight the player-related news. But you have the box score and game log for that, including the save for RHP Jose Chavez. Final: DSL Brewers #1 Squad 6, DSL Angels 5Box Score / Game LogThe Uno boys used a four-run 2nd and two-run 7th to grab a 6-1 lead, then needed every bit of that advantage, hanging on during a four-run Halos 8th. In that rough 8th, all four runs against older 2nd-year pro RHP Roman Perez, who turns 23 in October, were unearned, but Perez didn't help his own cause in the frame. On brighter notes (it was a win, after all), 18-year-old rookie RHP Esmir Suarez's second career start was strong - his debut one week ago, was hardly a disaster, but this was definitely an improvement. It's always interesting to see which arms the organization identifies for starting roles. 16-year-old Nicaraguan RHP Saul Sanchez tossed two scoreless, hitless innings, walking just one. Until true surprises emerge, it's important that the high-bonus priority signings perform well. 17-year-old RF Yophery Rodriguez doubled, singled, walked twice, and now sports a very healthy .980 OPS. But fellow top signing SS Kevin Ereu has not played since Monday when he exited after five innings for no obvious apparent game log reason. That's not ideal. My favorite early-season statistical oddity in the rookie leagues - 17-year-old Dominican infielder Tyler Rodriguez sports a .000/.500/.000 line. He's 0-for-8, with five walks, four HBP, and a sacrifice fly. 17-year-old Eduardo Charles, a RH bat listed as a shortstop, is on the DSL 1 roster but has yet to debut. Final: DSL Brewers #2 Squad 15, DSL Braves 0Box Score / Game Log Considering they only have one DSL club with no need to split the talent base, the Braves club, annihilated here, falls to 1-9 on the season. Surely, they did not enjoy this over four-hour game on their home complex. My goodness, it's nearly impossible to nit-pick. Guess the six walks issued by the three Cerveceros pitchers, the same pitchers who allowed only two hits, none over the final five innings? The one lonely error and the one caught stealing? Otherwise, it's pure dominance and a chance for many to pad their numbers as all nine spots in the lineup had a non-zero number associated with it. Five doubles among the 14 hits, including one for the bonus baby middle infielder Filippo Di Turi, who was the DH here while reaching base five times. Di Turi, having played in all ten team games, bumped his OPS from .744 to .865 in this one. Starting first baseman Danny Puerta, a 17-year-old LH bat from Colombia in just his 4th game, was hit by a pitch in the first inning. Puerta was replaced at first base in the middle of the bottom of the 1st, though it's unclear if his exit was related to the HBP, a pickoff attempt on defense, or something altogether different. There are two RH arms on the roster listed as active but yet to make their pro debuts - 19-year-old Dominican native Elias Gonzalez and 17-year-old Ismael Yanez of Venezuela, The schedule shrinks significantly on Sunday as the rookie kids hit pause. All afternoon affairs of varying start times. Have yourself a nice Father's Day, whether you have your dad (play catch!) or if it's a day of remembrance for you. If you are a dad like me, know that you were entrusted to do special life's work and hopefully you are enjoying the rewards of your efforts today. Will be incorporated into Sunday AM's Link Report: Final: DSL Brewers #1 Squad 6, DSL Angels 5Box Score / Game LogThe Uno boys used a four-run 2nd and two-run 7th to grab a 6-1 lead, then needed every bit of that advantage, hanging on during a four-run Halos 8th. Manager Mike Guerrero is the most recent addition to the Biloxi pre-game audio site. Just prior to Friday's doubleheader drubbing, so still in a proper mood...

Nashville and Wisconsin pulled out two of the more exciting wins of their respective seasons, both in extras innings. Biloxi will toss their Friday night in the forget-about-it bin. While their skillsets are hardly a match, we have another precocious Carolina center fielder providing us Jackson Chourio-type moments. Join us please, for the full review below! (I must tip my cap to the recuperative powers of the BrewerFanatic platform. Deep into this eight-game report, my desktop PC decided to force re-boot as I then held my breath that my browser - and our site - would remember what had been entered. It did 😀, so I have since exhaled.) Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic TRANSACTIONS: OF/INF Keston Hiura sent on rehab assignment to ACL Brewers OF Monte Harrison transferred to Development List from AAA Nashville We'll also point out that we've always prided ourselves at BrewerFanatic in acknowledging the efforts of those players who have been recently dropped from the Milwaukee system. Please find time to visit this post at some point in your busy day. Final: Nashville 5, Gwinnett (Braves) 3, ten innings Via the Sounds' site, we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of your season-long Link Report routine: Turang's Homer Walks Off Gwinnett in 10-Inning Thriller - Brice Turang knocks decisive blow in comeback 5-3 victory over Gwinnett Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Game Log Since his option to Nashville, Brice Turang is only 5-for-24, but he's swinging with purpose as four of those hits are for extra bases (1 double, 3 HR"s), and those round-trippers have not been cheapies: Combine all the details in the Sounds' summary linked above with the multiple video highlights via the team's Twitter media feed, and you will feel like you're part of (another) sellout crowd in Nashville. Speaking of that great atmosphere and Nashville's status as a minor league gem of a city, that is among the topics prized LHP Robert Gasser discusses in this video interview (go to the 22:00 minute mark). In just his second game back with the Sounds after missing about two months of action, Sal Frelick (2-for-5, 2 R, RBI) was also feeling frisky enough to steal his 5th base at AAA and first since his return to action (he did not attempt a stolen base in his three games in Maryvale). As long as you have that big giant oven mitt on, Sal, to protect that thumb - heck, two oven mitts are fine! Given the lackluster state of catching across the MLB landscape (if you're a devout MLBTradeRumors.com follower, you're aware), it seems organizations may be kicking themselves for letting Payton Henry go unclaimed when he was DFA'd. He is on an insane run - again, details in the linked game summary. I fully expect the Brewers to pad value to any trade deadline deal by including one of their three defensively dynamic AAA catchers (Henry, Alex Jackson, Brian Navaretto) as a secondary piece. Jackson's 2023 OPS is .901, Henry is at .855. Final, Game One: Montgomery (Rays) 11, Biloxi 4, seven innings Final, Game Two: Montgomery 7, Biloxi 0, 4.5 innings, rain Via the Shuckers' site: Shuckers Swept in Doubleheader by Biscuits - Two teams split the first four games of the series, Black extends his on-base streak to 35 games Pre-Game Media Notes Game One Box Score / Game Log Game Two Box Score / Game Log Yeah, it wasn't a great night for the AA club, at least the home Biloxi fans were spared from the raindrops and poor results with the boys in Montgomery. The mound work was rough, this was by far the worst of Justin Jarvis' 12 starts in what has been an exceptional 2023. Game One relievers Robbie Baker (tough June after sparkling work prior) and Kaleb Bowman (finding it's a big jump from High-A) didn't fare much better than Jarvis. Despite plunking two batters, Game Two reliever Luis Contreras managed a scoreless 1.1 innings and to his credit, stranded all three of his inherited runners for Zach Vennaro. Starter Russell Smith could not escape the first inning (and given the irony of what is happening within the NL Central and another 2021 2nd round LHP - well, let's just say I'm done harping on it after this mini tweet-thread). Did Mike Guerrero see ominous Game Two clouds and decide, "yeah, I'm not jeopardizing a 35-game on-base streak by placing Tyler Black in the lineup". I'm still not a huge fan of tracking on-base streaks vs. hitting streaks, but when one factors in how many seven-inning games are played due to doubleheaders, that's a factor to make them more impressive. Old friend Tristan Peters missed five weeks with an injury and has a .740 OPS in 23 games (video). Final: Wisconsin 8, Great Lakes (Dodgers) 7, ten innings Via the Timber Rattlers' site: Rattlers Stun Loons With Extra-Inning Victory - Wisconsin rallies from 5-0 deficit to beat Great Lakes 8-7 in ten innings Pre-Game Media Notes (Download Link) via the team's Virtual Press Box Box Score / Game Log With all due respect to the other full-season affiliates, where daily game summaries also rock, but there's just no matching what Voice of the Rattlers Chris Mehring does for us. For this road game, and with the host team not providing video highlights at all, we would be empty without the detail that Chris provides for what turned out to be easily one of the spotlight wins of the season across the entire system. Be sure to read through above. Ah, the vagaries of tracking these players on a daily basis. After two recent poor relief stints, RHP Michele Vassalotti had an outing to remember, perfect through nine batters. Do you call it a low-pressure appearance because the Rattlers were down by five runs to start Vassalotti's night? No, because no night on the field is low-pressure for a minor leaguer. Sorry to spoil the party, but Robert Moore is only 10-for-17 in SB attempts now? That stat kind of snuck up on us. Moore, along with Joe Gray (twice for Joe), was picked off first base in this one. Cheers to Gray on his four-hit clutch night, however. He was 2-for-37 in his temporary Biloxi placement, here's hoping he can get close to his home base again and flash more nights at the plate like this one. Alex Hall's uber-cool HR in the 9th was just part of reaching base all five times up. This was Hall's 11th start at first base in 2023. Is it time for starting RHP Stiven Cruz to rediscover success back at Carolina? Here's a unique coaching staff tidbit this AM. Final: Carolina 11, Augusta (Braves) 5 Late Rally Leads Mudcats to 11-5 Victory - Luis Lara had four hits and Kay-Lan Nicasia drove in three while pacing the Carolina offense Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Game Log Oh, Luis Lara, several others in the lineup Friday deserve their share of the spotlight as well, but we just can't take our eyes off of you (or wipe the smiles from our faces). The switch-hitter (must be taller than 5'7" by now, right?) won't turn 19 until November. Sure, 32 of Lara's 38 hits thus far are singles, but his OBP is .455 and he has 25 walks, two HBP's, vs. fanning only 14 times in 115 at-bats. It's a completely different profile than last season's A-Ball superhero, but each massively impressive: Other than RHP Pedro Fernandez with Nashville, it was a brutal night for full-season affiliate starting pitchers. For Mudcats' RHP Alexander Vallecillo, this effort was totally out-of-character, as evidenced by his 2023 game logs. Vallecillo even plunked two in addition to the five he walked in 1.2 innings. Just beautiful work by two relievers who both turned 23 years old this spring, Tyler Wehrle and Shane Smith. They will both be down for a few days after these multi-inning workloads. Barrios - Nicasia - Adams - Avina: each worth your box score review on this night. The camera work out of Augusta was hardly ideal, but kudos to the Mudcats' staff for collecting bountiful road game highlights regardless (Twitter media link). Final: ACL Brewers 8, ACL Cubs 3 Box Score / Game Log 7-2 record now for the Blue & Gold (we miss when each color had their own squad). Four-run second inning provided a 5-0 lead. In his age 17 season and in his 2nd pro season (1st stateside), RHP Manuel Rodriguez, a native of Mexico, allowed only a single in facing just that one over the minimum in four sterling relief innings. The A-Crew reached base 18 times via hit (four doubles), HBP and walk, so the box score is your friend here. Three more stolen bases for Canuck Dylan O'Rae (nine on the young season without being caught). Oh hi, Keston Hiura! Playing left field, Hiura doubled and singled (one K) in three trips to the plate. Rehabbing INF Josh VanMeter has only 25 AB's on the season, 5-for-13 in Maryvale, all singles. Final: DSL Twins 12, DSL Brewers #1 Squad 1Box Score / Game LogThe Twins youngsters scored in six of the first seven innings, including five runs in the first. Four of the seven runs allowed by 17-year-old Venezuelan RHP Gabriel Colmenarez were unearned, but that doesn't mean he was that much sharper (2 BB, HBP, WP sprinkled within his outing). Colmenarez' two rookie mound-mates would allow five combined runs (four earned) over the final five innings. Sometimes it's better to be dominated while at the plate in a game like this, at least then you tip your cap to the opposing staff. But the Cerveceros Uno drew eight walks, were 2-for-12 with RISP, and stranded 11. Three of the four hits were singles (17-year-old Venezuelan SS and leadoff man Joan Gutierrez doubled and walked). It was the 4th double among the ten hits thus far for the LH swinger, sporting a pretty .955 OPS through his first eight pro games. Gutierrez was caught stealing for the 2nd time in four attempts, however, after opening the game with a base on balls.Mix in three errors committed by the Uno Boys and there won't be a lot of highlighted compliments in the coaching game reports after this one.The team still sits at a fine 6-3 despite the loss here. Final: DSL Brewers #2 Squad 10, DSL Guardians Red 3Box Score / Game LogThis game is more befitting of today's weather for both Dominican contests. 86 degrees, sunny, 1 MPH wind. Big surprise, right? The Dos Brothers moved to 5-4 and had the Cleveland entry seeing red in this home game. We've been seeing game times consistently fall in the 3 hour, 30 minute plus territory since the start of the season, no change here. Not sure you're noticed an occasional 04:00:00 notation as well. With the tropical weather, why let a phantom pitch clock interfere? Nine hits for the good guys, including three doubles. Guardian pitchers walked 11 and threw six wild pitches. The Cerveceros Dos batters only had six RBI vs. the ten runs scored. Thank you, inexperienced opponent arms. Second-year infielder Demetrio Nadal (DH'ing in the 9-hole here) was 17-for-20 in SB attempts last summer. On Friday, he was 4-for-4 and has not been caught in six attempts in 2023. He singled, walked twice, and scored three runs. It will be nice when we are a full month in to see how things are trending beyond just "hot starts". But among the players beyond Nadal who padded their strong first week-and-a-half numbers on Friday were: 2B Luis Lameda - 2 singles, 3 walks, SB (one CS), 2 RBI, 1 run (1.083 OPS) 3B Roderick Flores - double, single, walk, 2 RBI, 1 run (1.035 OPS) RHP Aneuris Rodriguez - 4.2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 Ks, 1 WP (1.04 ERA) The Maryvale Brewers have an immediate rematch with their Cubbie foe Saturday afternoon, and as always, the Dominican games are daytime affairs. On the full-season affiliate menu, it's all evening action with only Nashville playing before adoring home fans. We'll detail it all for you on Sunday AM. Enjoy your Saturday! 2023 Minor League Transaction Thread
Jim Goulart replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
I really dislike the move of the MLB draft to July for one selfish reason - I am able to take in Cape Cod League games, and over the years have been able to visit with Brewers' draft picks as they were considering whether to sign or not. Matulovich was the most recent (I'm sure I convinced him wearing all my Brewers gear), but Joey was a pleasure to chat with, very accommodating, and yes, here's to the continued pursuit of his baseball dream. -

Check out the 9th inning game log here. Just-traded Taylor Floyd did all he could in his first inning with AA Wichita (Twins). His teammates did not welcome him kindly. -
