Figured I'd start this thread not so much to discuss the positives and negatives for the Brewers and their short- and long-term future, but to say thanks as you wish to Will Inman, Joe Thatcher, and Steve Garrison for their contributions. From the astonishing Will (loved the quotes as much as the performances), to the underdog Joe (loved the Hawaii championship four-inning video), to my East Coast 20-year-old Steve, thanks guys. You were appreciated, and we'll follow your careers closely, no doubt. Will, Joe, and Steve, thanks! http://www.brewerfan.net/images/playerpix/will_inman.jpg http://www.brewerfan.net/images/playerpix/joe_thatcher.jpg http://www.brewerfan.net/images/playerpix/steve_garrison.jpg

Huge trade being discussed here in the Major League Forum -- RHP Will Inman and LHP's Joe Thatcher and Steve Garrison are no longer Brewers (to the Padres for reliever Scott Linebrink). Discussion should take place in that thread, not in the Transaction thread here, please. p092.ezboard.com/fbrewers...6083.topic I have the feeling that minor league diehards who follow this forum will be dwarfed in opinion some by those on the Major League Forum less familiar with the prospects, so please be patient with their viewpoints, as hopefully they will be with yours http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif . I can understand the Brewers' perspective on this, but wow, I loved each of those prospects.

Final: Jacksonville (Dodgers) 5, Huntsville 4 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...ewsId=1289 Suns Hand the Stars Another Tough Loss James Tomlin knocked in the winning run with an eighth inning sacrifice fly in Jacksonville?s 5-4 comeback win over Huntsville Wednesday afternoon in the middle game of a five-game set at the Baseball Grounds. The Suns won for a second time in the series by a run to improve to 23-10 in the second half and push their lead in the South Division to two and a half games over Montgomery, while the Stars slipped to 20-13 in the second half and saw their North Division lead trimmed to two over Chattanooga after the Lookouts win over Mississippi earlier in the day. The Suns downed the Suns for a 15th time in their last 18 meetings. Stars? reliever Bo Hall struck out Kevin Howard to escape a bases loaded jam in the seventh inning but wasn?t as fortunate in the eighth. A.J. Ellis and Cory Dunlap opened the frame with singles and Anthonly Raglani legged out a sacrifice bunt attempt for a single to load the bases for Tomlin, who flied out deep enough to bring Ellis in with the go-ahead run and drive in his 17th run since joining the Suns. Hall retired the next two hitters but was saddled with the loss to end a personal five-game win streak dating back to May 12. The run was only the second earned run allowed by the Huntsville bullpen in its last 34 innings of work covering the last 13 games. Steve Moss opened the ninth with a single but Suns? reliever Ramon Troncoso got the next three hitters to ground into force outs at second base to end the game and earn his fifth win. The Stars stranded at least one base runner in every inning and left 14 on throughout the game, including leaving the bases loaded twice for a third straight game. Adam Heether?s two-out, run-scoring double in the first gave the Stars the lead against Justin Orenduff. The Stars have scored in the first inning in all three games in the series and in six of their last eight games. Starting pitcher Lindsay Gulin singled in a two-out run in the second inning and Moss doubled home a pair in the third to extend the lead to 4-0. Jacksonville tied the game on two-run home runs by Juan Gonzalez in the third and Raglani in the fourth, marking the first time Gulin had allowed two long balls in a start. The veteran southpaw gave up four runs, two earned, on six hits, while fanning six in his five frames and did not pick up the win for the first time in six starts. The series continues Thursday night with Stars southpaw Steve Hammond taking the hill against Suns? right-hander Jimmy Norrito. Coverage begins at 5:50 pm central time and can be heard on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. Final: Nashville 13, Fresno (Giants) 7 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Adam Pettyjohn photo, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2470 Sounds Bats Wake Up In 13-7 Win Over Fresno NASHVILLE ? Nashville's bats came to life Wednesday afternoon at Greer Stadium as the Sounds tallied 13 runs on 16 hits to even their series against Fresno at one game apiece with a 13-7 victory. The Sounds fell one short of season highs in both runs and hits. Nashville hitters had combined for a .244 team batting average during the month of July. Sounds starter Adam Pettyjohn (7-2) continued his success against PCL opponents by winning his fourth straight start. Pettyjohn went six innings giving up three runs and striking out five for the victory. He has now won nine of his last twelve starts dating back to his time spent with Double-A Huntsville. Nashville (63-41) struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Callix Crabbe led off the game with a single up the middle. Joe Dillon followed two batters later with a two-out single to center that moved Crabbe to third before Andy Abad (2-for-4) hit a fly ball to deep center field for two of his three RBIs on the afternoon. He would score one batter later when Charles Thomas hit a ground ball chopper into shallow left to bring the score to 3-0 in favor of Nashville. Thomas went 3-for-5 on the day with four RBIs, a personal season high. Fresno (55-50) countered in the top of the second when former Sounds All-Star (Pirates organization) Tomas de la Rosa hit a solo homer to left field off of Pettyjohn. In the top of the third, Nashville outfielder Gabe Gross (2-for-5) led off with his first hit as a Sound by getting a double down the right field line. Drew Anderson then singled him home with a line drive up the middle before stealing his eighth base of the year to put a man at second with no outs. Two batters later, Thomas hit a deep fly ball to center that scored Anderson. Ozzie Chavez led off a three-run fourth for the Sounds with his fourth longball of the year, a solo shot to deep left-center field. Pettyjohn followed by reaching on a throwing error by shortstop Luis Figueroa before scoring on a Gross triple. Gross came in to score two batters later thanks to a line drive single to left from Dillon (2-for-3), giving him his team-leading 70th RBI of the season. Clay Timpner added another run for the Grizzlies in the top of the fifth with a solo shot off of Pettyjohn before William Bergolla went yard in the top of the sixth for Fresno's final run against the Sounds? starter. Nashville would add four more in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to another Abad RBI, an error by Grizzlies third baseman de la Rosa, and a Mike Rivera RBI single, bringing the score to 12-3. The Grizzlies scored four in the top of the ninth on a Dan Ortmeier grand slam off of Nashville reliever Tim Dillard to bring the final score to 13-7 in favor of Nashville. Grizzlies starter Chris Begg (7-3) took the loss, giving up six earned runs in 3 2/3 innings while striking out one. The series will continue tomorrow at 7:00 PM as Nashville's Mark DiFelice (0-0, 2.25) takes the mound against Fresno right-hander Sun Woo Kim (2-6, 6.86). Link Report for Games of Tuesday, July 24th
Jim Goulart replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/story/S...ing+streak Power won't panic over losing streak Michael Dailey Charleston Daily Mail Sportswriter The West Virginia Power caught its fair share of good breaks during the first half of the South Atlantic League baseball season. In cruising to a 48-20 record and a Northern Division first-half title, the Power always seemed to benefit from a well-placed, seeing-eye single, or from a tailor-made double play when the opposition tried to mount a rally. A 14-game winning streak never hurts, either. But just 33 games into the SAL second half, West Virginia is no longer catching the breaks it did earlier in the season. Be it a slicing liner that finds a defender's glove instead of an outfield gap, or a pitch that's just off the corner of the plate, the breaks just haven't been there. The shortage of breaks has helped send the team into a losing skid not experienced by the Power since the team's first season at Appalachian Power Park. West Virginia (15-18) has dropped seven straight games, the latest being a 7-2 decision Tuesday night to the Delmarva Shorebirds at Appalachian Power Park in front of 2.890 fans. The current losing streak, which is the team's longest since an eight-game slide in August of 2005, certainly has frustrated Power players and coaches. But those men have played and coached enough baseball to know that in the course of a 140-game season, streaks, both good and bad, will eventually find every team that plays the game. "It seems to me that we're getting what we dished out a lot in the first half," Power infielder Kenny Holmberg said. "There's been a lot of different heroes on the other team. It's not one guy just standing out and picking on us. "And for us, it seems like every guy in the lineup wants to do a little bit too much, instead of allowing the guy behind them to do just enough. We've just gotten away from doing the little things like bunting, drawing walks, getting hit by pitches and stealing bases. "Baseball is a humbling game. But to still be 25 games above .500, we're still doing a good job. It's just that we're going through what some of the other teams have gone through this year. "We haven't experienced it much this season, so hopefully we're getting it out of our systems before the playoffs." Power outfielder Andrew Lefave shared Holmberg's no panic attitude. "It's a long season and maybe we're just getting a little tired," LeFave said. "We're not used to losing, so it's tough, but we've just got to stick to our game plan and things will be all right. "When you play at this level, there's so much competition and everybody steps up to play. Our pitching has been doing pretty well, but we're just not getting clutch hits like we were earlier. "We're not getting the bat on the ball like we were, but everyday is a new day. We'll just wake up tomorrow, do what we know we can do and try not to do too much right now. "I think we're just trying to do too much right now." The Power's plate struggles were evident on Tuesday as the team fell behind early and couldn't mount a rally while leaving seven runners stranded. Delmarva (16-16) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the third inning off of Power starter Alex Periard (5-3). After a sacrifice fly by Lafave cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third, Delmarva pulled away in the fifth on a two-run blast to right by catcher Michael Pierce. The Shorebirds put the game away with three runs in the seventh off of Power reliever Shawn Ferguson. Delmarva starter Kyle Schmidt (4-8), along with a pair of relievers, limited the Power to just five hits, striking out eight. "I think we've just been trying to do too much at the plate once we get somebody on," Power hitting coach Corey Hart said. "We're trying to drive everybody in at once, instead of just staying with our good short swings. "The breaks have just been going the other way. The balls we're hitting are being caught. We're still putting some good at-bats together, we're just not getting the production that we want. "We're just going to have to grind it out and stay with our plan. Hopefully that will take over and we'll peak at the right time (the playoffs)." -

Link while active, text follows: www.wvgazette.com/section...2007072427 Power bats remain cool, losing streak reaches seven By Tommy R. Atkinson Charleston Gazette Staff Writer After the first couple of innings Tuesday night, it seemed the West Virginia Power might swing its way out of its worst malaise of the season. Alas, the timely hits still refused to fall for the Power, and the Delmarva Shorebirds flew out of town with a 7-2 victory and a four-game sweep. A paid crowd of 2,890 attended at Appalachian Power Park. Another night of futility saw the Power?s season-worst losing streak reach seven games and the Power suffered its first sweep in South Atlantic League play this year. The Power won the Northern Division title in the first half of the season and the accompanying playoff spot. The Power (15-18), which leads the Sally League in batting average at .288, managed only five hits Tuesday and stranded seven baserunners, including five in scoring position. During the four-game sweep by the Shorebirds (16-16), the Power batted .235 (31-for-132), was outscored 27-11 and left 32 men on base. ?I guess you can call it bad luck,?? said Power right fielder Stephen Chapman, who doubled twice Tuesday. ?We?ve hit a lot of lineouts. [You] just keep on plugging away. There?s nothing you can do. We?ve been losing a lot lately, but we haven?t been playing bad ball. That?s just how the ball rolls.?? Chapman said the best thing to do when a bad streak rears its ugly head is nothing at all. ?You do your same routine,?? he said. ?You do everything you?ve been doing. We still practice the same and do everything the same as if we were winning 14 games in a row. There?s not a whole lot we can do extra. Hopefully, we?ll just get a big hit.?? The Power had several chances but couldn?t come through. Power shortstop Brent Brewer laced a one-out single in the first inning then stole second but was left there as the next two batters flied out and struck out, respectively. In the second, Chapman smacked a two-out double, but catcher Andy Bouchie fanned to end the inning. The Power manufactured a run in the third to pull to 2-1 as leadoff hitter Charlie Fermaint singled, stole second and third, then came home on left fielder Andrew Lefave?s sacrifice fly. The inning held more promise as Brewer, who walked earlier, stole second but first baseman John Alonso bounced out. Chapman doubled with two outs in the fourth and again was left there when Bouchie struck out. Fermaint singled with one out in the fifth, went to second on an error, stole third and came around on a throwing error as the Power closed to 4-2. The Power?s only other scoring opportunity came in the eighth, but by then West Virginia trailed 7-2. Fermaint finished 2-for-4 and scored both Power runs. Starter Alex Periard (5-3) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on eight hits, including a pair of two-run home runs, in six innings. The Shorebirds had no trouble getting timely hits. Center fielder Brandon Tripp smacked a one-out, two-run home run in the third for a 2-0 lead, and after the Power closed within a run in the bottom of the third, catcher Michael Pierce belted a two-run shot for a 4-1 advantage in the fifth. Delmarva blew the game open in the seventh with three runs for a 7-2 edge. Shorebirds starter Kyle Schmidt (4-8), who was riding a personal six-game losing skid, limited the Power to one earned run on five hits in six innings with seven strikeouts and two walks. The Power will continue its homestand as the Hagerstown Suns, who are 9-23 in the second half, roll in for a four-game series beginning at 7:05 tonight (6:05 Central). -
Former Brewer Mike Coolbaugh killed by line drive
Jim Goulart replied to OhioBrew's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Base coaches keep their eyes open Sounds haven't taken any extra precautions By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer Andy Abad was back in the first-base coaching box for the Nashville Sounds for Tuesday night's contest against visiting Fresno. Abad, one of the players who regularly fills that position for the Sounds, didn't take any extra precautions following the death last Sunday of Tulsa Drillers first base coach Mike Coolbaugh after he was struck in the head by a line drive. Coolbaugh, a longtime minor league third baseman who played 44 major league games, had recently become a coach with the Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. "I hope they don't go to where you have to go with a helmet," Abad said. "It's just one of those things. I don't know what precautions you can take. Those things happen." Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas, who coaches third base, said he's been hit by thrown balls when coaching at first base ? but never by a batted ball. "I was like, 'I wonder what he (Coolbaugh) was doing'," Kremblas said. "Was he watching for a pickoff? He'd just started coaching; you tend to be a little less aware than if you've been there for a while. "I didn't see it. If I saw it, I could probably say 'I know what he was thinking there.' " While it's rare that a base coach gets hit, it does occur. "I've heard of guys getting hit ? getting hit and getting hurt," said Sounds hitting coach Harry Spilman, who served in that same role with Round Rock, Houston's Triple-A affiliate, when Coolbaugh played there in 2005. "But I don't think I've ever heard of someone getting hit hard enough to get killed. It's just a freak thing. "(But) that ball gets on you in a hurry. I think the average fan doesn't realize how quick it gets on you. We've all been there; it seems like the ball keeps coming at you and you can't get out of the way of it." Coach wears headgear Colorado first-base coach Glenallen Hill has opted for the headgear. Hill donned a catcher's helmet ? similar to a batting helmet, but without the protective earflaps ? for Monday's game against San Diego. "We are watching the ball being pitched, watching the ball being hit," Hill, a former major league outfielder, told rockies.com. "We pay attention to the defensive alignment, all sorts of things. There's a lot of information and focus that goes on when a guy has a lead at first base and you're watching the pitcher's move, and he delivers that ball. "We just turn our heads, and in that split-second, that line drive most of the time just misses you. (But) if a guy squares up a ball and it's at you, you're getting hit. There's just no way around it." Hill told The Associated Press that he always appreciates it when batters reach first base and hand over their body armor: "I strap the stuff on." New York Yankees Manager Joe Torre said every base coach in baseball should wear a helmet. "I don't think there's any question. A lot of times coaches scare you, because some of them won't even watch the hitter, because they're trying to help the runner. So I don't think that's a bad idea at all," Torre told The Associated Press. A moment of silence was observed prior to the Sounds game, and flags flew at half-staff in memory of Coolbaugh. -
From MLB.com: Minor Leaguer suspended: Angel Salome, one of Milwaukee's top catching prospects, has been suspended 50 games "for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program," Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday. Salome, 21, and a fifth-round Draft pick in 2004, was batting .318 in 64 games for Class A Brevard County. He got a late start this season because he suffered a broken ankle in late 2006. "Obviously, we're disappointed as any team would be," said Brewers general manager Doug Melvin. "Reid [Nichols, the team's farm director,] has talked to Angel and he knows he has to suffer the consequences of the suspension." The suspension will stretch into next season. The Brewers sent Salome home to New York for the next two weeks, but after that he will be permitted to work out at the team's Spring Training facility in Phoenix. Salome is the second Brewers player disciplined under the policy. The first was Nic Slack, who was Brevard County's 22-year-old closer when he was suspended in 2005. Slack retired from baseball at the end of that season. . NOTE: Arizona Brewer RHP Luis Jimenez has already served a suspension. -- Jim

Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Sounds allow one run, still lose By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer As hot as the Nashville Sounds have been all season, they may have run into an even hotter team Tuesday night. Visiting Fresno downed the Sounds 1-0, giving the Grizzlies their eighth consecutive win and their third by shutout. The Sounds' 62 wins lead all of Triple-A, but it was their first 1-0, nine-inning game since winning at Round Rock on June 25 of last season. "You've got to get some two-out, RBI hits," Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas said after his team dropped its third consecutive game. "If we'd gotten two of those, we'd have won; but we didn't, and it cost us." Second baseman Callix Crabbe singled to lead off both the first and the sixth innings, and was stranded in scoring position on both occasions. He also had a two-out base hit in the eighth, then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. The loss went to Nashville starter Zach Jackson, who is 0-3 with one no-decision for the month of July. "We had good pitching, good defense," Kremblas said. "They just did better." Back-to-back Zach: Jackson struck out nine in eight innings Tuesday, matching his season high, which he established in his previous start. Jackson struck out nine in a six-inning outing at New Orleans in which he took the loss, as Nashville fell 4-1. Jackson and Gabe Gross, who was optioned down to Nashville by the Brewers over the weekend and made his first Sounds start Tuesday, were both involved in the trade that sent former Milwaukee first baseman Lyle Overbay to Toronto prior to the 2006 season. What they said: "We had some balls that were hit hard; it just wasn't our day. But we'll come out (today), put some at-bats together and see what happens." ? Crabbe. -

Perez continued his blistering July as he went 4-for-5 with a triple while driving in more than half of the Manatees' runs. He got Brevard County going with an RBI single in the second inning and delivered a two-run base hit in the fifth before legging out a bases-loaded triple in the eighth. "I've been feeling pretty good lately," Perez said through teammate and interpreter Rafael Lluberes. "When I was in Huntsville, I definitely felt a lot of pressure, but when I came down here, [there was] not so much pressure anymore." Pressure situations don't seem to affect Perez, who's hitting .533 (16-for-30) with 25 RBIs with runners in scoring position; that average climbs to .643 (9-for-14) with two outs. "My approach is always the same -- just look for a good pitch and make sure that I hit it," Perez said. The 24-year-old Cuban shortstop is batting .340 in the Florida State League, thanks in part to a .361 average in July, and has driven in 18 runs in 18 games. He has 25 RBIs with Brevard County, although only five of hits 35 hits have gone for extra bases. Perez started the season with Double-A Huntsville and hit .195 with 16 RBIs in 56 games. Mat Gamel went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two walks, a stolen base and two runs scored for the Manatees (18-13). Chris Errecart was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and three runs scored. Reliever Ben Stanczyk (5-1) tossed three scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out four for the win. The Mets (12-19) scored their only run when Dustin Martin led off the ninth with a double and came home on Dan Murphy's groundout. St. Lucie starter Deolis Guerra (1-6) (1-6) lost his fifth straight decision after allowing two runs -- one earned -- on three hits and a walk in three innings. The 18-year-old right-hander is winless since April 23. Yohannis Perez has driven in 25 runs in 30 games since he was assigned to the Florida State League. Passage was just one of many young baseball fans with the School Aged Child Care program who brought their child-sized baseballs and gloves to be signed by the players. Six Helena Brewers pitchers spent Tuesday morning showing the children how they prepare for games by stretching and doing calisthenics. ?We are always trying to do activities where we can get our players involved in Helena,? says Paul Fetz, general manager for the Brewers. ?Activities and programs like this with the youth go a long way.? Fetz said it was great for the children to get an idea about game-day preparations. ?Players are kids at heart, and they know how to reach the kids on this level,? he said. Casey Baron, one of the pitchers, said spending time with young people is very enjoyable. ?Kids are excited to see players like us,? he said. Baron grew up around baseball. He was a batboy for the University of Maryland and says the players were always receptive to him. ?It?s something I want to be to the younger generation too,? he said. Ian Salsbury, third-grader at Central Elementary, listened intently as the players talked about the games. ?It?s pretty cool to meet the players,? he said. Salsbury has played many positions on a local baseball team for little guys, although he says, he enjoys being catcher the best. Candace Seliskar, sight manager for SACC, describes the baseball players as ?hometown heroes.? She said they were extremely excited to have the athletes visit. ?They (the children) look up to these guys,? she said. ?It?s a little inspiration for them.? Final: Casper (Rockies) 9, Helena 7 Shocker... Helena Site Game Summary: Rockies Rally Late to Top Brewers HELENA--The Casper Rockies played the role of spoiler Tuesday night as the Helena Brewers failed to win and extend their lead over second-place Great Falls. Rockies catcher Austin Rauch hit a no-doubt, two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to give Casper an 8-7 lead; Casper added another run in the inning and Helena failed to score in its last at-bat losing 9-7. The Brewers longest winning streak of the season ended at nine games with the loss. Helena scored the game's first five runs and took a 5-0 lead into the fourth inning, but defensive miscues allowed Casper to cash in with more opportunities as the game progressed. Mike Goetz hit his second home run of the season in the second inning to put Helena ahead 2-0. Steffan Wilson continued his hot streak by blasting his fifth home run of the year in the fifth inning to give the Brewers a 7-4 lead. The Rockies began their charge in the fourth inning when Jordan Pacheco touched starter Donovan Hand for a three-run home run. The home run cut the Brewer lead to 5-3. Casper scored one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to make a 7-6 game. The Brewers held the lead until the ninth, but Rauch's home run gave the Rockies their first lead of the series. Helena dropped its first game of the year when leading after six innings; they were previously 21-0. The Brewers will look to take the rubber match of the three-game series against the Rockies when the two teams meet for the final time of the season at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central) on Wednesday night. ***Link while active, text follows: www.helenair.com/articles...507_01.txt Brewers' win streak snapped By CURT SYNNESS, Helena Independent Record Sports Writer The Helena Brewers were riding a nine-game win streak and a 7-6 lead over the Casper Rockies going into the ninth inning at Kindrick Field Tuesday. Until Rockies' catcher Austin Rausch put a charge into one. Bo Bowman led off the top of the final frame with a single, and was pinch ran for by Chad Lembeck. And then Rausch, with a full count and none out, belted a drive high and deep into the night, over the scoreboard in left-center field, for the game-winning dinger. The ball traveled an estimated 440 feet. The visitors scored once more against losing pitcher Wes Etheridge, for a 9-7 final. When the Brewers' Eric Farris flied-out to the warning track in left to end the game, Casper's comeback was complete. For the second night in a row, the home team jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings. Lee Haydel opened the scoring in the first, with a walk, a stolen base, advancing to third on a groundout, and sprinting home on a wild pitch. In the second, Mike Goetz scalded a bullet to right-center for a solo tater. The ball was still rising when it crashed into the netting 10 feet above the fence. Helena's three tallies in the third were provided by Haydel, Farris, Steffan Wilson and Zelous Wheeler. In the fourth frame, Casper's Gordon Pacheco ripped a three-run homer off of Brewer starter Donovan Hand, getting his club to within 5-3. When Brewer cleanup hitter Wilson crashed a two-run blast to deep center in the fifth stanza, with Farris on board, the locals enjoyed a 7-4 advantage. It was Wilson's fifth homer of the season, each circuit blow coming against the Rockies. Hand gave up another run in the fifth, and then was relieved by Dan Merklinger, who permitted two runs in the seventh. Craig Langille relieved for 1.1 innings, before Etheridge entered in the fatal ninth. Helena (23-11) came into the game with the best pitching in the Pioneer League, with a 3.64 earned run average, and one of the loop's top defenses. But their closer came up a little short, and the defense committed four errors, in the team's unsuccessful bid for 10 straight wins. Achieving multi-hit games for manager Jeff Isom's Brewers were Farris and Wheeler. Colorado (9-25) outhit the Capital City group 12-9, led by Pacheco (3-for-5), Rausch, Leonardo Reyes and Bowman. The Rockies' Randall Taylor relieved the last two innings and was credited with the victory.
