MiLB.com: Perez propels Manatees Yohannis Perez drove in a career-high six runs as host Brevard County battered St. Lucie, 10-1, in the completion of a suspended game Tuesday. Perez continued his blistering July as he went 4-for-5 with a triple while driving in over half the Manatees' runs. The 24-year-old shortstop got Brevard County going with an RBI single in the second inning and delivered a two-run base hit in the fifth before legging out a bases-loaded triple in the eighth. The Cuban defector is batting .340 in the Florida State League, thanks in part to a .361 average in July, and has driven in 18 runs in 18 games. He has 25 RBIs with Brevard County, although only five of hits 35 hits have gone for extra bases. Perez started the season with Double-A Huntsville and hit .195 with 16 RBIs in 56 games. Mat Gamel went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two walks, a stolen base and two runs scored for the Manatees (18-13). Chris Errecart was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and three runs scored. Reliever Ben Stanczyk (5-1) tossed three scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out four for the win. The Mets (12-19) scored their only run when Dustin Martin led off the ninth with a double and came home on Dan Murphy's groundout. St. Lucie starter Deolis Guerra (1-6) (1-6) lost his fifth straight decision after allowing two runs -- one earned -- on three hits and a walk in three innings. The 18-year-old right-hander is winless since April 23. -- Michael Echan/MLB.com -

Final: Fresno (Giants) 1, Nashville 0 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Zach Jackson photo, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2468 Sounds Blanked By Fresno In Homestand Opener NASHVILLE ? The Nashville Sounds opened their homestand on the short end of a 1-0 loss to the Fresno Grizzlies on Tuesday night at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series. Fresno starter Travis Blackley combined with a pair of relievers on a four-hitter, the Grizzlies? third consecutive shutout and the club?s eighth straight victory. It was the sixth blanking suffered by the Sounds this season and their second in the last three games. The defeat was the third in a row for Nashville (62-41), which fell to just 11-16 in series openers this season. Callix Crabbe (3-for-4) recorded three of the four Nashville hits on the evening, all singles. The second baseman also stole a pair of bases to increase his team-leading total to 14 thefts on the year. Fresno plated the game?s lone run in the top of the fourth inning when William Bergolla led off the frame with a double off Zach Jackson and scored on Daniel Ortmeier?s RBI single. Nashville left fielder Jose Macias prohibited a second run from crossing the plate when he combined with shortstop Chris Barnwell to throw out Scott McClain at the dish to end the inning. Blackley (8-5) earned the win after he held Nashville scoreless while allowing only two Crabbe singles over his six innings of work. He struck out seven batters while walking three in the outing. Scott Atchison followed with two scoreless frames before Brian Wilson kept the Sounds at bay in the ninth to preserve the shutout and earn his eighth save of the year. Jackson (9-6) took a tough-luck loss for the Sounds after allowing one run on seven hits while matching a season high with nine strikeouts over eight frames of action. It was the southpaw?s sixth quality start of the year. Outfielder Gabe Gross went 0-for-4 with one strikeout in his Sounds debut. The teams continue the series with a noon matinee on Wednesday afternoon. Nashville left-hander Adam Pettyjohn (6-2, 3.76), who pitched for the Grizzlies in 2004, will man the bump to face Fresno right-hander Chris Begg (7-2, 4.13). Final: Huntsville 6, Jacksonville (Dodgers) 3 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...ewsId=1285 Heether Helps Stars Get Back Into Win Column Adam Heether belted a home run and the bullpen continued its fine work in protecting Huntsville?s 6-3 win Tuesday night over Jacksonville in the second of a five-game set at the Baseball Grounds. The Stars won for a 13th time in their last 14 games to improve to 20-12 in the second half and 57-43 overall, while the Suns slipped to 22-10 in the second half and will await the result of the game between Mobile and Montgomery to see if their two-game lead over the Biscuits remains the same or is reduced. The Stars defeated the Suns for just a third time in the last 17 meetings dating back to last season. Steve Sollmann doubled with two outs in the first inning and scored on a throwing error by Suns? shortstop David Nicholson that also allowed Lou Palmisano to reach first base. Heether followed with his seventh home run of the season to give the Stars a 3-0 lead. Huntsville has scored in the first inning in five of their last seven games and in both games in this series. Alcides Escobar knocked in a run in the third inning with a sacrifice fly to push the visitors? edge to 4-0. Suns? starter James McDonald was lifted from his third double-A start after yielding back-to-back two-out singles to Steve Moss and Escobar, who extended his hitting streak to six games, in the fifth. He was charged with four runs, one earned, on seven hits and suffered his first loss in three double-A starts. Brian Akin retired Stars? starter Derek Miller for the final out but gave up a two-out, run-scoring triple to Palmisano that gave the Stars a 5-0 lead. Miller had retired 10 in a row before walking Xavier Paul with one out in the sixth and giving up back-to-back home runs to Blake DeWitt and Kevin Howard that suddenly trimmed the Huntsville lead to 5-3. The Stars have given up two home runs in an inning four times this season and have yielded back-to-back jacks to the Suns twice. Miller was then lifted after issuing a two-out walk to Cory Dunlap and replaced by left-hander Mitch Stetter, who struck out the lefty-swinging Anthony Raglani to end the inning. Miller allowed three runs on four hits over 5 2/3 innings to pick up his second win in four starts with the Stars. David Johnson, Jeff Housman and Luis Pena each tossed a scoreless inning, combining to allow two hits and fan two. Pena earned his fourth save in five tries, as the bullpen has combined to allow only one earned run over its last 31 innings of work over the last 12 games. The series continues Wednesday afternoon with Stars southpaw Lindsay Gulin taking the hill against Suns? right-hander Justin Orenduff. Coverage begins at 11:50 am central time and can be heard via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. Former Brewer Mike Coolbaugh killed by line drive
Jim Goulart replied to OhioBrew's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/story/S...for+Power/ Coach's death is a tragic reminder for Power Michael Dailey Charleston Daily Mail Sportswriter Before every West Virginia Power home game, public address announcer Don Cook makes the following announcement to those gathering inside Appalachian Power Park: "In the interest of safety, your attention is drawn to the following: "Everyone in Appalachian Power Park is subject to the possibility of being hit by a flying object from the field. Batted balls, wildly thrown balls, thrown or broken bats or even donuts swinging off the ends of warm up bats, could make their way into the stadium seats. "Baseball is an inherently dangerous game. You should, for your own safety, watch the game closely and be attentive to matters on the playing field at all times. With these warnings in mind, we hope you enjoy the game in a safe atmosphere." It's a simple statement, directed at fans, that is meant to raise awareness of the many dangers surrounding a professional baseball game. Most fans shrug off the announcement or fail to hear it altogether. But the people on the diamond are well aware of the game's unavoidable dangers. That danger level was brought to the forefront of both players and fans on Sunday night, with the tragic death of Tulsa Drillers first base coach Mike Coolbaugh. Coolbaugh, 35, died shortly after being hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of Tulsa's Tino Sanchez in the ninth inning of a Class AA Texas League game at Arkansas. Coolbaugh, a former Major Leaguer with St. Louis and Milwaukee, was honored with a moment of silence before Monday's South Atlantic League game between the Power and Delmarva Shorebirds. But for players and coaches both on the field and in the dugout, the thought of just how Coolbaugh died, lingered long after the silent remembrance. "It was definitely on my mind," said injured Power infielder Jimmy Mojica, who coached first base Monday in the Power's sixth consecutive loss, a 6-1 defeat. "Especially with a lefty hitting, I've got to be aware of that from now on. "Now that I'm hurt, I've been spending more time out there and I've had a few close calls. When there's a man on first and second and I've got to watch for the first baseman, that's when I get a little nervous." "I'm sad that it happened," added Mojica, who became acquainted with Coolbaugh when he was in the Brewers' system. "I knew the guy. He was a good guy. Anytime a baseball player dies or anyone that you know, it's always sad." Power Manager Mike Guerrero faces the danger even more often than Mojica. As the Power's third base coach, Guerrero spends half of each game 90 feet or closer to home plate. "You're vulnerable at times," Guerrero said. "You want to be in a position to see the ball when it's hit, but at times, you don't see it and you don't even have a chance to react. "At times we stray closer than 85 feet away, those are chances that you take. When you're out there you better be paying attention. You see people here getting hammered in the stands sometimes. If you're not paying attention, you won't have time to react. "That's just the way it is. You just take your chances when you go out there every night." Delmarva Manager and third base coach Gary Kendall also feels in the line of fire at times. "It's something that you're aware of," Kendall said. "They have coach's boxes out there and they're roughly 85 to 90 feet away, but sometimes when you get runners on base and you're trying to get an angle on a middle infielder, you cheat up a little bit. "When you do that, you worry because your back is to the hitter sometimes. It runs through your mind every once in a while, but you never think of something so tragic to happen. "I've had a few close calls and I've gotten hit a few times. Actually, I got hit more when I was coaching first than at third. It can definitely happen just because of the hook spin on the ball. You're first reaction is to move get out of the way, but the ball just goes along with you. "I didn't find out until I was eating lunch today and I was kind of taken aback by it. It really bothers you that it took the life of somebody. It's really sad." Power pitching coach John Curtis suffered a debilitating head injury himself during a batting practice incident in 2005. Curtis was struck in the back of head by a line drive off the bat of Alcides Escobar, after straying too far from behind a protective "shag screen" at the edge of the outfield grass behind second base, while hitting fly balls to outfielders. Curtis, who never lost consciousness after the incident, did suffer some stroke-like symptoms with some paralysis to his left hand and lower arm. Learning of Coolbaugh's fate made Curtis realize just how lucky he was. "I still consider myself terribly lucky," Curtis said. "It makes you realize, like with foul balls in the stands here, just how quickly that ball can get on top of you. "When I first heard about it, one of the first things I thought about was how lucky I was. I can certainly understand how it could happen. But this is just a tragic incident where the odds were so overwhelmingly against it. "It's a real tragedy." Curtis also wondered about Sanchez's mental state after his liner his Coolbaugh. "When Escobar hit me, he was in tears," Curtis said. "He asked to opt out of the game, he was so torn up. "This kid (Sanchez) is probably really having a tough time right now." A professional dugout is also a danger zone when the ball is in play. "There was about a one month stretch when I was just like a ball magnet," Power catcher Andy Bouchie said of the dangers in the dugout. "One of our pitchers (Omar Aguilar) got hit yesterday. Luckily, it wasn't anything serious. There was a foul ball hit hard into the dugout and he just warded it off with his hand. You've got to pay attention all the time. "The key is just to stay awake, stay alert and not be afraid of it." Charleston Daily Mail Photo: Tom Hindman West Virginia Power Manager Mike Guerrero stays alert for foul balls when he stands in the third base coach?s box. http://www.dailymail.com/images/0724guerrero.jpg -

In order to make room for catcher J.R. Hopf, who has been activated from the Brevard County disabled list, Angel Salome has been transferred down to Helena. Now Angel has only DH'd since the 17th, so we're wondering (and trying to find out) if this is because Salome is limited to DH work right now for some reason. In the meantime, you have Hopf, Anderson Delarosa, and Nestor Corredor splitting catching duties with the Manatees.

Helena Site Game Summary: Helena Sinks Casper for Ninth Straight Win HELENA--As the first-half of the season winds down the Brewers continue to play solid fundamental baseball, winning for the ninth consecutive time Monday night. The Brewers scored in five separate innings and eventually won 10-4 over Casper. For the second night in a row Helena jumped ahead early. Caleb Gindl singled in the game's first run in the first inning and Eric Farris extended the lead to 3-0 on a two-run double during the second inning. During the third inning Zelous Wheeler brought Gindl home on a triple and Jordan Swaydan hit a sacrifice fly as the Brewers took a 5-0 advantage. Helena starting pitcher Evan Anundsen cruised until the third inning, but surrendered two runs in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth before exiting. The Rockies, therefore, pulled within two runs, but the Brewers pulled away on an unusual four-run play in the bottom of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs Scotty McKnight hit a grounder to the Casper shortstop who threw on to second base. The throw, however, missed the target and went into right field allowing all three base runners to score. The third runner, Mike Goetz, collided with the catcher and scored safely after the ball popped from the catcher's glove. The ball rolled away from the plate to allow McKnight to come in from third base. The play put Helena ahead 9-3. The Rockies scored a lone run in the sixth inning, but could not come any closer. The Brewers' Steffan Wilson gave Helena a six-run lead again when he hit a home run to dead-centerfield in the bottom of the sixth inning. Reliever Robert Bryson followed Anundsen on the mound and tossed three innings while Casey Baron pitched the ninth inning to close out another Brewer victory. Anundsen improves his record to 4-2. With the win Helena (23-10) secures its spot in first-place for at least one more game. The Brewers will look to extend their winning streak to 10 games Tuesday night at 7:05 Pm (8:05 Central) when they play host to the Rockies.

Link while active, text follows: www.wvgazette.com/section...2007072330 Power losing streak hits six in a row By Mike Whiteford Charleston Gazette Staff Writer It?s part of baseball?s inevitability, a slump that afflicts even the best of teams. After a near-flawless first half that produced a division title, the Power has encountered a malaise, an offensive skid in which runs suddenly are as infrequent as big crowds at old Watt Powell Park. The Power suffered its season-worst sixth straight loss Monday night at Appalachian Power Park, a 6-1 decision to the Delmarva Shorebirds, and collected just seven hits. A quiet crowd of 2,479 attended. In those six losses, the Power scored just 16 runs and averaged seven hits a game, numbers uncharacteristic of a team that?s led the South Atlantic League in hitting all season and, despite the slump, still holds a comfortable lead in runs. ?I just think we?re down on ourselves a little bit,?? said Power first baseman Andrew Lefave, who leads the league with a .338 mark. ?We?re used to putting up some runs in the first and second innings and getting comfortable.?? Instead, it was the Shorebirds who started fast. They scored three runs in the second and three more in the third off Power starter Brae Wright and never allowed the home team much hope. For the Power, second baseman Brad Miller contributed the only scoring by lofting a home run down the left-field line and onto Smith Street in the seventh inning. ?People go through slumps,?? said Lefave, ?but we?ll be all right. We?re the type of team that can turn this around at any minute. We just go out every day and play the game hard like we?re supposed to and, hopefully, things will turn around.?? Delmarva manager Gary Kendall knows things can change quickly. ?With the age of these guys,?? said Kendall, ?you?re going to go through some peaks and valleys. I know they?re going to get it together sooner or later, hopefully after we?ve left town. Any day now, they?re going to come out of this. I see a team that?s very well coached. You?re not going to find better baseball men than [Power manager] Mike Guerrero and [pitching coach] John Curtis.?? Delmarva starter Tim Bascom, a former Central Florida University pitcher, yielded just six hits, a walk and a run in seven innings to pick up the victory. Bascom was a fourth-round Baltimore selection in the June draft and joined the Shorebirds a month ago. In 37 innings, he?s allowed just 25 hits and seven earned runs. ?He?s a quality kid who goes about his business,?? said Kendall. ?The thing that strikes me the most about him is his professionalism. He?s got very good composure.?? Power relievers D.J. Lidyard, Jared Sutton and Travis Wendte blanked the Shorebirds on one hit and a walk through the final six innings. BRIEFLY: The Power will conclude the four-game Delmarva series with a 7:05 game tonight (6:05 Central) and play host to the Hagerstown Suns in a four-game series beginning Wednesday. ... Power right fielder Chuckie Caufield and catcher Martin Maldonado teamed up for the defensive play of the night. Caufield threw a strike to Maldonado to nail the Shorebirds? Danny Figuerora, who was trying to score on Todd Davison?s single in the second inning. Davison delivered a nasty hit on Maldonado, who went sprawling but held onto the ball.

Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/sports/huntsvi...amp;coll=1 Coaches know marked men From Money's book on Aaron to Sauveur's knowledge of Bonds, insight is interesting Mark McCarter, Huntsville Times Countless books have been written about Hank Aaron, both before and after his pursuit of Babe Ruth's home run record. He even penned an autobiography, "Aaron, r.f.," in the mid-1960s, which begins with his jubilation over signing a landmark $100,000 contract. These days, Alex Rodriguez has that much in the loose change tray on his dresser. Among the other books in the Aaron library: "The man who made Milwaukee famous: A salute to Henry Aaron." You may know the author. Don Money. He's the Huntsville Stars manager, a man who shared a clubhouse (and a beer or two) with Aaron for two seasons - and who is a good sport when you suggest, "I didn't even know you'd ever read a book, much less wrote one." With Barry Bonds now thisclose to Hank Aaron's career record of 755 home runs, a visit to the Huntsville Stars' clubhouse can provide a nice look at the dichotomy between Aaron and Bonds from the perspective of a pair of former teammates. Money was Aaron's teammate with the Brewers in 1975-76. When Aaron hit the final homer of his career, in the seventh inning of a 6-2 win over California on July 20, 1976, Money was in the dugout, having just hit a sacrifice fly two batters earlier. (Playing right field that day for the Angels, by the way, was Bobby Bonds, Barry's father.) Stars pitching coach Rich Sauveur was a rookie with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986, making his debut on July 1. A lean, speedy Barry Bonds was his center fielder, having made his debut only a month earlier. Now, the man who made BALCO famous is bulky, slow - and apparently not much different as a personality than he was two decades ago. The Arrogant One Sauveur and Bonds were first teammates in Hawaii in Triple-A in '86. Even then, Sauveur said, he had a tendency to put himself above his teammates. "He was very arrogant then," Sauveur said. "He knew he was a good ballplayer. He had a dad that was a major league player at the time. He was well-known all over the place. He was touted as a very, very good prospect. "From what I remember, he was very arrogant and the players didn't appreciate it. We were just Triple-A players, guys coming up. That just wasn't part of the game that I was taught, to be arrogant to fans and stuff like that. But you would see it day in and day out." When Sauveur was reunited with Bonds in the majors, there was even more of what people have shrugged off as "just Barry being Barry." "From my time in the big leagues, for other players and myself, when you get called up the first time you keep your mouth shut and go about your business and do what you're supposed to do. But he wasn't like that. He was the same guy in the big leagues as he was in Triple-A," Sauveur said. "Don't get me wrong," Sauveur continued, "he's a fabulous ballplayer. At one time, he was the best all-around player in the game, ever. He's a great athlete. Everybody has their opinion on what happened and what he's done. He made the decision to do whatever he did, if he did anything. "He was a fabulous player. I just wish," Sauveur said, "he hadn't been so arrogant to people, and other players, too." The Gentleman Hank Aaron was "just another ballplayer." That's what Don Money remembers. Not in talent, mind you. But in the way he wanted to be treated. He joined the Brewers in '75 having broken Ruth's record. He had finally achieved the long-overdue recognition he deserved. But he was one of the most humble superstars you'd ever want to meet, as he has remained a humble, gracious man in his retirement. "I never saw him flaunting anything," said Money, who was a teammate of eight future Hall of Famers (Aaron, Jim Bunning, Steve Carlton, Rollie Fingers, Paul Molitor, Mike Schmidt, Don Sutton and Robin Yount.) He was eager to join his teammates socially. "We got along great. We went out," Money said. "We had a beer. We had some good times. He was just like any of the other players. It was probably nice for him to get away from all the hoopla, to go out and have a beer and shoot the breeze with teammates." Before the '76 season, one of Money's friends in New Jersey suggested that he write a book about the upcoming year alongside Aaron. Money approached Aaron with the idea. He even offered to show the finished product to Aaron before it was printed. Aaron gave the go-ahead and said, "I trust you." "I used to just jot some things down during the day, things I saw him do. Nothing special. "What I remember about him was his being a gentleman. He went about his business and did what he's supposed to do." The gentleman's record will soon be topped by the arrogant one. Funny thing, though. With each passing day, it seems their legacies grow even farther apart, Aaron's legacy of class and greatness something that Bonds can never threaten.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com/ On May 12, 1988, 1st baseman Greg Sparks tied a Southern League record by recording 20 putouts as the Huntsville Stars won their 12th straight game, beating Birmingham at Hoover Met, 9-4...... 2nd baseman Mike Bordick, near the end of a 16-game hitting streak, went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs as the Stars. He's since retired after a 14-year major league career ........ It's been that long since the Stars have won 12 straight, and tonight, July 23, 2007 -- it came to an end again. Juan Gonzalez collected two of Jacksonville's three hits, scored both runs, and hit the game-winning HR in the 8th inning into the right field bleachers, to give the Suns a close 2-1 victory, their 3rd straight against the Stars....... Will Inman, the hard-luck loser, gave up all the hits, and although he has lost two of his last four starts this month, he owns a 2.74 ERA....... Call Run Support, Will. You've had six runs in back of you in the 23 innings you've pitched (or 2.34 per 9 innings). Talk about hard luck. In the one game (July 11) he had a 3-0 lead, he was taken out after four innings with a rising pitch count. Talk about hard luck. Seven hitters went to the plate for the Stars in the 1st inning -- yet out of it came just one run -- and that on a bases-loaded walk by left-hander Greg Miller to Adam Heether....... Miller, a reliever with a 2.18 ERA in his last 10 appearances, struck out seven in 3 2/3 innings (his best strikeout total since fanning five vs. Birmingham, June 25). After walking Heether, he proceeded to fan Brendan Katin on a 1-and-2 fastball and Hernan Iribarren, a .160 hitter vs. lefties, on an 0-and-2 fastball. The Stars left runners on second in the 2nd and 3rd innings, but Miller ended both frames with strikeouts...... After Miller left the game in the 4th with two out and Steve Moss coming to bat with Alcides Escobar at 3rd (he was on a 60-pitch count), Alvis Ojeda finished off Moss, with eight pitches....... The Stars picked up back-to-back one-out singles by Katin and Iribarren in the 6th, but Escobar hit into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play........ Finally in the 8th, a wild pitch by Ojeda put Lou Palmisano on second. Palmisano reached on a fielder's choice after a leadoff single by Steve Sollmann. But Brendan Katin, who had an 0-2 count on him at the time of the wild pitch, struck out swinging......... The clutch had given out on the Stars. Meanwhile, Will Inman was having no problem subduing the Suns....... A two-out walk to Kevin Howard in the 1st was meaningless. In the 3rd, Juan Gonzalez (called up with the departure of Chin-Lung Hu to Las Vegas before the All-Star break) hit a leadoff double to right. Then a sac bunt set up the Suns' first run on a sacrifice fly by Xavier Paul. After that, Inman set down nine straight batters before Blake Dewitt's two-out single in the 6th. Then Inman set down five more batters before facing Gonzalez again........ He got behind the hitter 2-and-0, but evened the count before he launched a home run into the bleacher seats in right field, giving the Suns their 2-1 margin. With one last chance to preserve the streak, closer Mark Alexander walked Hernan Iribarren........ Alexander was deadly as the Suns' closer last year, saving 26 games and logging a 0.96 ERA....... After Escobar failed to move the runner over, Mel Stocker, who entered the game on a double-switch in the 8th, singled to right. When Moss hit a comebacker on an 0-2 count to Alexander, Stocker broke up a double-play attempt by sliding hard into Gonzalez, safe, and inflicting some pain on Gonzalez in a bargain.......... The bases were loaded for Michael Brantley, the Stars' hottest hitter during the streak (.407, 7 walks), but Alexander struck him out on a 1-2 pitch, then retired Steve Sollmann, on the second pitch, on a long fly ball to left to end the game. During the 12-game hitting streak, the Stars hit .262, while the staff held opponents to a 1.53 ERA. Six pitchers had ERAs of zero. Adam Heether led the offense with 17 hits, 11 runs, 11 RBIs, and nine walks (with Steve Moss), but is 1-for-12 in his last four games, and one RBI, which was the bases-loaded walk in the 1st. With the loss, the Stars are 19-12. Chattanooga edged Mississippi, 6-5, as Craig Tatum singled in the 8th to break a tie and reduce the Stars' lead to three games......... Tuesday, the Stars will send lefty Derek Miller, who won his first game last Wednesday, to face James McDonald (2-0, 0.82).

Former Brewer Mike Coolbaugh killed by line drive
Jim Goulart replied to OhioBrew's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com/ TRAGIC DEATH OF FORMER STAR PUTS GAME IN PERSPECTIVEIn 1997, Mike Coolbaugh hit .308 with 30 home runs and 132 RBIs, setting club records that year for the Stars that still exist: at bats (559), total bases (303), as well as tying the RBI record. He was a consistent threat at the plate all season. Starting with the first series of the year, when he went 8-for-15 with two HRs and five RBIs vs. Jacksonville, he never let his average slip under .283, which came after a 1-for-15 slump in late April-early May........ He got his average up to .317 after a 4-for-4 day against Knoxville on May 8, and it never dropped below .300 the rest of the season. Despite a two HR, seven RBI performance against Greenville in Game 3 of the Southern League Championship Series, however, he was 0-for-13 in the other four games, as the Stars lost the championship to the Braves in 5 games. Coolbaugh made his mark with the 1997 Stars, though, as they set team records, still unbroken, in runs scored (942), hits (1,380), total bases (2,221), RBIs (871), doubles (281), and home runs (164)....... On the all-time list, he's in a 9th place tie in HRs with Scott Brosius and Steve Howard, 12th in RBIs, 5th in batting, and tops in slugging (.542). Coolbaugh, whose brother Scott is also a Texas League hitting coach with the Frisco Roughriders, spent most of his 17-year career in the minors, appearing in 39 games for the Brewers in 2001 and 5 games for the Cardinals in 2002......... The two Coolbaughs got to play against each other for the first time on June 19, 1997, during a series at Joe Davis Stadium against the Birmingham Barons. ........ Coolbaugh wore #32 for the Stars, a number not in current use, but I suggested to the team office about retiring it, and painting the number on the outfield wall in remembrance.
