Final: West Virginia 9, Lakewood (Phillies) 4 West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER POUND BLUECLAWS The West Virginia Power scored nine runs on 12 hits Tuesday night, including four runs on three hits in the first inning, as they took the first game of the series with a 9-4 victory over the Lakewood BlueClaws at First Energy Park. The Power scored all four of their runs in the first with two outs. The rally began with Taylor Green?s RBI double. Steve Chapman walked with the bases loaded to plate the second run and Andy Bouchie knocked in the final two with a base hit. Andrew Lefave?s first of three hits was an RBI double in the second inning to give the Power a 5-0 lead. Quintin Berry?s sacrifice fly scored Fidel Hernandez in the third to put Lakewood on the board. Green knocked in his second run with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Lefave and Brad Miller ripped RBI singles in the fifth inning to give the Power an 8-1 lead. The BlueClaws knocked Jeremy Jeffress out of the game in the sixth inning. After he issued back-to-back walks to Berry and Doug Morales, Adrian Cardenas tripled off the wall in left-center field to plate two runs, and he scored later in the inning on a wild pitch. The Power added one more run in the top of the ninth on Brad Miller?s second run-scoring single of the game. Jeffress (6-3) allowed four runs on three hits and struck out six to get the win and Darren Byrd (5-7) was tagged with the loss after surrendering eight runs on ten hits over four and two thirds. Omar Aguilar and Shawn Ferguson combined to toss four scoreless innings of relief. The Power improved to 63-31 overall and 15-11 in the second half, while the BlueClaws fell to 48-42 overall and 15-10 in the second half with the loss. Lefave, Green, Bouchie and Miller all drove in two runs for the Power. Five Power players had multi-hit games, including Lefave who led the team with three hits. The Power will continue the four game series against Lakewood Wednesday morning. The Power will start left hander Brae Wright (6-4, 5.45) and the BlueClaws will counter with right hander Andrew Cruse (3-6, 4.54). The first pitch is scheduled for 11:05 AM (10:05 Central). West Virginia Box Score: Wow again to Andrew Lefave; the fact 20-year-old Taylor Green is keeping up his tremendous season, now hitting in the middle of the order, is just huge -- what a wonderful bonus his 2007 has been; Omar Aguilar's scoreless relief stint was three innings long, sweet... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_lwdafx_1 West Virginia Game Log: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_lwdafx_1

Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 Stars riding one-year wave of wins Team best in Southern League since ending tailspin last July By MARK McCARTER Huntsville Times Sports Staff, markcolumn@aol.com This time a year ago, the Huntsville Stars were still a struggling, listless team, in the middle of a five-game losing streak that would soon make the brakes-screechingest U-turn you ever heard. Since the end of that losing streak, the Stars have been the winningest team in the Southern League - and they're the league's hottest team right now. The Stars have won seven in a row, their longest win streak of the season. Huntsville has a one-game lead over Tennessee, which opens a five-game series against the Stars tonight at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars were off on Monday. Nearly as hot as the Stars themselves is third baseman Adam Heether, who was named the Southern League Hitter of the Week on Monday. Heether was 10-for-15 for the week, with two homers, six RBIs and seven runs scored. He came out of the All-Star break on a tear, going 3-for-3 in the first game back, driving in four runs. He followed with a double the next night and a homer on Friday, then doubled to lead off the seventh on Sunday, scoring on Brendan Katin's single for the 1-0 win. The Stars have gone 88-56 since July 16, 2006, the best record in the league and 5 1/2 games better than Jacksonville, a franchise often considered the league's best on and off the field. The record has enabled Huntsville to win the second-half North division title last year and the first-half division championship this season; if the Stars can clinch the second half, they'd host four of the five (if needed) games in the best-of-three division playoffs in September. Two pitchers who began the season with Huntsville were called up to the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday. Manny Parra, who was 7-3 this year with the Stars, then pitched a perfect game on June 25 in Triple-A, and reliever Grant Balfour were promoted. Ben Sheets went on the disabled list and Chris Spurling on the bereavement list, making room for Parra and Balfour. Twelve of the 25 players on Milwaukee's active roster played for the Stars.

Huntsville Site: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...ewsId=1272 Stars Say Goodbye to Salas The Milwaukee Brewers have promoted right-hand pitcher Marino Salas to triple-A Nashville and sent left-hand pitcher Mitch Stetter from a rehabilitation assignment with the rookie level Arizona Brewers to Huntsville. Stetter is expected to be in uniform for the Stars on Tuesday night when they open a five-game series against Tennessee, while Salas is expected to join the Sounds in New Orleans on Tuesday. Salas leaves Huntsville in second place in the Southern League with 17 saves, including two in the Stars just-completed five-game series sweep of Chattanooga. He posted a 1.42 earned run average, allowing only six earned runs in 38 innings. Salas was scored on in only four of his 37 appearances and allowed more than two runs only once. Stetter opened the season in Nashville and went 0-0 with a 6.75 earned run mark in 10 outings. He allowed four earned runs over 5 1/3 innings and was placed on the disabled list on April 30 with left shoulder tendonitis. The southpaw went 2-3 with a 2.61 earned run average and eight saves in 32 games for the Stars in 2005 before his promotion to the Sounds.

Link while active, text follows: www.news-record.com/apps/...1021/GTCOM Hoppers game was like OK Corral By Matt Brooks, Greensboro News-Record Staff Writer GREENSBORO -- On a steamy afternoon at First Horizon Park, tempers flared and ejections piled up in a 7-5 Hoppers loss to West Virginia. It seemed only fitting, then, that the game concluded with a record-breaking squirt gun fight to ease the tension and let cooler heads prevail. Greensboro trailed 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning when second baseman James Guerrero stepped to the plate with runners at second and third and one out. As Power pitcher Jose Romero set himself and delivered, Guerrero backed out of the box. In accordance with a new rule, the pitch was called a strike. Hoppers hitting coach Anthony Iapoce, who was stationed at third base, immediately approached home plate umpire Travis Carlson to argue the call. Moments later, Carlson ejected Iapoce for arguing balls and strikes. "It's a new rule that if the batter gets out of the box during the pitch, it's a strike. I wasn't arguing that," manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "But it seems like the umpires are waiting until late in the series and late in the game with runners in scoring position to call that. "If you're going to call that, do it the first game of the series so everybody knows and everybody is ready. But don't do it the last game of the series in the late innings. Don't be a factor in the decision. Just let the guys play." Rodriguez took over as third base coach, but he didn't last long. After Guerrero struck out swinging, Carlson ejected Logan Morrison from the Hoppers' dugout. Greensboro's everyday first baseman had the day off, but was shouting at Carlson from the top step of the dugout. Rodriguez jogged over to base umpire Tom Walkoviak to argue, then trotted to home plate to berate Carlson. Moments later, Rodriguez joined the ejection parade. Rodriguez kicked the dirt around home plate until the white dish was covered, then placed his cap atop the mound he had built and stormed off to the clubhouse to a standing ovation. The cheering continued when Hoppers bat-dog Miss Babe Ruth trotted out and retrieved the cap. "Maybe they can send that in to ESPN," Rodriguez said. "That was a good one for Babe." The long inning ended when Spike McDougall struck out with two on and two out and the Hoppers trailing by a run. Rodriguez said it wasn't the first time the new rule has been enforced at a pivotal moment. "The same thing has happened to us five times -- three times against us and twice in our favor," he said. "Late in the game, two outs and runners in scoring position and they make that call. Same situation. I don't know why they keep doing that." The final tirade was Rodriguez's third of the inning. Earlier he argued with Carlson after a pitch appeared to hit John Raynor but was called a ball. He also argued with Walkoviak when Greg Burns was called out even though West Virginia second baseman Brad Miller bobbled the ball. Despite their frustrating finish, Rodriguez, Iapoce and the rest of the Hoppers returned to the field after the game along with many of the 5,393 fans in attendance to take part in a squirt-gun fight on Super Splash Day. -

Helena Independent Record: Brewers hold off Rockies again CASPER, Wyo. - The Helena Brewers did it again, defeating the Casper Rockies 9-5 in the third game of their four-game series. The Brewers have dominated the series so far. After a quick and scoreless first inning, the Brewers got into the game, scoring three runs. Steffan Wilson hit a line drive to get on base, then was driven in by Caleb Gindl, who went 3-for-4 on the day. Gindl in turn made it home on a Zelous Wheeler home run. The third inning was just as productive for the Brewers, as they scored three more runs. Helena kept up the pace for the next two innings, scoring one in the fourth and two in the fifth while keeping the Rockies to zero. Wheeler's run in the fifth inning was the Brewers' last, and the Rockies seemed to be catching up. Craig Langille gave up two runs after relieving starter Jose Garcia in the sixth. He was replaced in the seventh by Brock Kjeldgaard, who went on to give up three more runs that inning but managed to hold the Rockies' bats off in the eighth. Bobby Bramhall finished out the game, keeping Casper hitless in the ninth. Garcia got the win and Casper's Juan Nicasio was tagged with the loss. Helena plays in Casper again tonight at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central) before returning home to face the Idaho Falls Chukars on Thursday. ***MiLB.com: Wheeler, Gindl handle Rockies Zelous Wheeler and Caleb Gindl drove in three runs apiece as visiting Helena beat Casper, 9-5, on Monday. Wheeler delivered a two-run homer, his second, in the first inning and an RBI single in the fifth. Gindl singled and scored in the first, ripped an RBI single in the second, stroked a two-run base hit in the third and doubled and scored in the fifth. Matt Cline chipped in two hits and Steffan Wilson scored twice for the Brewers (17-10). Helena starter Jose Garcia (4-1) yielded two hits and two walks with six strikeouts over five shutout innings for the win. -

They have a lot of seafood, and there is a lot of jet skiing. You always can feel the breeze off the ocean." Favorite food: Shrimp. You ever work on a boat growing up? "Not really. I was always dedicated to sports growing up, but I did enjoy living on the water. Other than playing ball, I'm really good at fixing cars. A lot of friends of mine have race cars, and they let me fix them." So, fixing cars is sort of a hobby then? "Yeah. Last year, we got this really old car for, like, $500, and I worked on it for weeks." Hobbies besides fixing cars: Basketball, jet skiing. Equipment: Aka Adadema catcher's mitt, Rawlings glove when playing first, T141 Louisville Slugger bat. How'd you become a catcher? "The first time I got drafted, it was by the Angels and I was 17 years old. I was young and decided to go to junior college in Lake City, Fla. My coach there, Tom Clark, one day came to me and wanted me to try catcher." Were you open to it? "Yes. I started catching because my arm was so good. So, many scouts started looking at me. Plus, it's Puerto Rican style to be a catcher." It worked out well for you, I guess? "Yeah, I went from the 29th round to the 12th round. That's a big difference. I love catcher. It's a good feeling, if you're 0-for-20, but your team is winning, you still feel a part of it. When you get a 'W,' you feel like you put the right fingers down." So, what are you going to give Coach Clark if you get to the big leagues? (Laughs) "He says if I make the big leagues, I have to put lights up at the stadium." You met any of the Puerto Rican catchers? "I met Yadier (Molina) because he plays winter ball with me. This offseason, I visited Benito Santiago's home. He's got some motorcycles, so we went out there. He taught me a lot of stuff." What's your favorite baseball movie? " 'For Love of the Game' by far is my favorite movie." Final: Brevard County 7, Dunedin (Blue Jays) 4 MiLB.com: Manatees clip Blue Jays Chris Cody tossed six scoreless innings and Angel Salome drove in three runs as Brevard County defeated visiting Dunedin, 7-4, on Monday. Cody (2-2) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out four. The 23-year-old left-hander went 5-5 with a 1.74 ERA in 14 outings for Class-A West Michigan. E.J. Shanks gave up two hits in 1 2/3 scoreless frames for his eighth save. Salome ripped an RBI single in the fourth inning and slugged a two-run homer, his sixth, in the fifth. Cole Gillepsie and Mike Bell belted back-to-back solo blasts in the eighth and Yohannis Perez drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth for the Manatees (14-11). Blue Jays starter Brandon Magee (2-6) took the loss after surrendering five runs on six hits and four walks with one strikeout in 4 1/3 innings. Anthony Hatch hit a two-run single, Brian Jeroloman drew a bases loaded walk and Jesus Gonzales delivered an RBI groundout in a four-run seventh for Dunedin (16-9). -- Ryan McConnell/MLB.com Brevard County Box Score: Manatees draw five walks to go with their eight hits -- what's with the home runs this week -- nice; Patrick Ryan came on with one out in the 7th and allowed all three inherited runners to score, so newcomer Mike Marksbury's debut pitching line is pretty ugly; Marksbury walked two and allowed two ground ball singles, so it wasn't that hideous an outing... web.minorleaguebaseball.c...p;sid=t503 Brevard County Game Log: Groundball closer E.J. The Nashville Sounds came up on the short end of a 4-1 loss to the New Orleans Zephyrs on Monday evening at Zephyr Field in the opener of a four-game series. The defeat snapped a four-game road winning streak for Nashville (58-37), which had its division lead reduced to six games over Iowa. Zephyrs starter Philip Humber (10-6) earned his Pacific Coast League-leading tenth victory as he defeated the Sounds for the third time in three starts this season. The right-hander held Nashville to one run on four hits over 7 2/3 innings. New Orleans grabbed a 1-0 lead against R.A. Dickey in the bottom of the first inning. Anderson Hernandez led off with a single to center and scored two batters later on a Fernando Tatis RBI double to right. The Z?s added three more runs in the third against Dickey to increase the advantage to 4-0. Hernandez got things started again by opening the frame with a triple to right before making it a 2-0 game when he scored on a Tatis single. Chip Ambres added an RBI single before Ricky Ledee wrapped up the frame?s scoring by driving in Tatis with a sacrifice fly. Drew Anderson broke up Humber?s shutout bid in the top of the eighth inning when he chased the right-hander with a two-out RBI single to right that plated Chris Barnwell, bringing the score to its final 4-1. With the knock, Anderson extended his hitting streak to nine games, one short of his best effort this season. The Sounds brought the potential tying run to the plate later in the frame in the person of cleanup hitter Joe Dillon but Nashville?s RBI leader was retired on an inning-ending flyout by Z?s reliever Willie Collazo. Barnwell (0-for-3) had his season-best seven-game hitting streak halted in the contest. Dickey (7-5) suffered his first loss in 18 appearances, dating back to May 2. He allowed four runs on seven hits while walking four batters and striking out five over his seven innings of work. The teams continue the series at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when right-hander Elmer Dessens (right shoulder strain) will make his first rehab appearance in a start for the Sounds. New Orleans will counter with right-hander Mike Pelfrey (2-2, 3.44). Nashville Box Score: Jose Macias 0-for-his-last-30, ouch! Final: West Virginia 7, Greensboro (Marlins) 5 West Virginia Site Game Summary: BREWER DELIVERS IN THE CLUTCH Brent Brewer knocked in West Virginia?s final two runs and made a spectacular leaping catch which led to a game-ending double play at First Horizon Park as the Power homered three more times and took the rubber match from the Grasshoppers 7-5 on Monday afternoon. Chuckie Caufield singled in Andrew Lefave in the first inning to plate the first run of the game before Taylor Green belted a two-run homer, his second of the series and his eleventh of the season. The Grasshoppers answered quickly with four runs in the bottom of the first. James Guerrero?s base hit scored John Raynor to put the ?Hoppers on the board and Daniel Santin drilled a three-run homer to give Greensboro their only lead. Brewer drove in his first of two runs on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. The Grasshoppers plated their final run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Scott Cousins. Brewer gave the Power some breathing room in the ninth inning as he hit a solo home run on a 1-2 pitch from Jay Buente. In the ninth, with a runner on first and one out, John Raynor hit a line drive to short. Brewer made a great leaping catch and fired the ball to first base to complete the game-ending double play.
