  1. Final: Nashville 5, Iowa (Cubs) 1 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Chris Oxspring photo, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2278 Oxspring Tosses Gem, Sounds Win 6th In A Row NASHVILLE ? Chris Oxspring turned in an outstanding outing, allowing one hit over seven scoreless innings, and Ryan Braun went 3-for-4 including his league-leading seventh home run of the year to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 5-1 victory over the division-rival Iowa Cubs on Monday evening at Greer Stadium. The victory extended Nashville?s winning streak to a season-best six games. The red-hot Sounds (12-6), who hold a three-game lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division over the I-Cubs, have won 11 of their last 13 games. Oxspring (2-1) dropped his ERA to 1.61 through four starts on the year as he recorded a win for the second straight outing. The Aussie allowed only two runners to reach second over his seven frames. He walked four batters and struck out six in his 103-pitch outing. Braun continued his assault on opposing pitching, finishing a triple short of the cycle. The third baseman has ripped 15 of his 21 knocks on the year for extra bases. Vinny Rottino (3-for-4), who has seven hits in his last 10 at-bats, produced his third consecutive multiple-hit effort to extend his hit streak to a season-best three games. Braun staked the Sounds to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a one-out RBI double down the left field line off Iowa starter Les Walrond that plated Chris Barnwell. Jose Macias upped the Nashville lead to 3-0 in the second with a two-out, two-run single up the middle that brought home Rottino and Callix Crabbe. The knock extended the outfielder?s hitting streak to six games, tying for second-longest by a Sound in 2007. Braun showed off his firepower again in the third when he belted a leadoff solo homer to left-center that careened off the guitar-shaped scoreboard. The blast, off Walrond, was his seventh roundtripper of the season, tying him for the minor-league lead with Joe Mather of Double-A Springfield (Cardinals). AUDIO: Ryan Braun's Guitar Shot HR -- www.nashvillesounds.com/a...4-23-1.mp3 The Cubs scratched across an unearned run in the top of the eighth inning against Sounds reliever Jose Capellan for their lone tally of the evening. Eric Patterson drew a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Rottino, and scored on a Mike Fontenot. Nashville answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame. Rottino led off with a triple off the wall in left-center and scored a batter later on a Crabbe sacrifice fly, bringing the score to its final 5-1. Walrond (2-1) took his first loss of the year after allowed four runs on nine hits over his six frames of action. The teams wrap up the four-game series with a 10:30 a.m. morning contest on Tuesday that will feature an outstanding pitching matchup. Right-hander Yovani Gallardo (2-1, 2.65), the Milwaukee Brewers? top prospect, will man the bump for Nashville to face Iowa right-hander Carlos Marmol (2-0, 1.65). The hurlers rank second and third, respectively, in the Pacific Coast League with 26 and 24 strikeouts. The game will feature a crowd filled with over 8,000 area schoolchildren in attendance as part of the successful Nashville Sounds Reading Club program. All program participants who have met their reading goals receive a free ticket to the game and will be recognized for their accomplishments during a pre-game, on-field parade. The first eight batters in the Power's batting order scored at least one run, while all but John Alonso contributed an RBI. West Virginia's non-stop offensive attack was highlighted by a five-run seventh frame in which Stephen Chapman and Martin Maldonado hit back-to-back homers. The Power, who are hitting .294 as a team and have stolen a league-high 39 bases, had no shortage of standout contributors. Michael Brantley went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs, while Chuck Caulfield went 3-for-6 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs. "This team is a great mix of guys," said second baseman Kenneth Holmberg, who went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. "We're a bunch of gamers who aren't going to wow you, but we put the ball in play and are always putting pressure on the other team with the amount of speed that we have on the basepaths. The winning streak is great, but that's more for the writers and fans to talk about. We're just concerned with staying relaxed, getting good at-bats and remaining focused from the first pitch of the game until the last." Power manager Mike Guerrero echoed Holmberg's team-first comments. "There's been a different hero every night," he said. "The home runs are going to come and go, but what's been important to me is that we've been hitting well in the clutch and keeping the ball in the middle of the field. The pitching staff has been solid, our defense has been good and our baserunning has been very aggressive. We need to keep this same attitude throughout the entire season, because this has been a lot of fun." Not to be overlooked in the maelstrom of offense was the brilliant relief pitching of Travis Wendte (1-0), who allowed just two hits over 4 2/3 scoreless innings en route to his first victory of the season. Starter Brae Wright surrendered five runs on five hits in 4 1/3 frames for the Power (12-3). The Crawdads (7-8), losers of four in a row, jumped out to an early lead on the strength of four second-inning runs. Wanell Macia stroked an RBI infield single and Francis Poni followed with a three-run homer to right field. Hickory's pitching staff was victimized by poor infield defense. Third baseman Jared Keel, who had not committed a miscue over his first seven games, was charged with four errors, and catcher Poni and shortstop Michael Ambrose each had one, as well. Michael Crotta (0-1) took the loss, yielding eight runs -- five earned -- on 10 hits over four innings. Jacob Cuffman allowed three runs in an inning, while Kyle Pearson surrendered five unearned runs over three frames. Kenneth Holmberg (2-for-4, double, two RBIs) calls his Power team, winners of 10 straight, 'a bunch of gamers.' 7. West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER OFFENSE EXPLODES FOR TENTH WIN IN A ROW The West Virginia Power set single game season highs on Monday afternoon with 16 runs and 18 hits as they defeated the Hickory Crawdads 16-5 at Appalachian Power Park for their tenth win in a row. The Power scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning when Darren Ford crossed the plate on Francis Poni?s throwing error. The Crawdads took a 4-1 lead in the top of the second inning after a Wanell Macia RBI single and Poni?s three-run homer. The Power scored five times in the third inning and never looked back. Michael Brantley ripped an RBI double which was followed by Kenny Holmberg?s run-scoring single. Steve Chapman reached on a fielder?s choice to bring in another run, Martin Maldonado reached on Mike Ambrose?s throwing error which plated the fourth run of the inning and Taylor Green capped the five-run frame with a run-scoring double. Chuckie Caufield?s RBI triple and Brantley?s RBI single gave the Power an 8-4 lead in the fourth inning. Hickory scored their final run in the top of the fifth on Jim Negrych?s RBI single. The Power added three in the bottom of the fifth inning on RBI singles from Ford and Caufield and a run-scoring double from Brantley. The Power scored five more times in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brantley knocked in the first run on a sacrifice fly and Holmberg doubled in a run before Chapman and Maldonado hit back-to-back home runs. Travis Wendte (1-0) tossed four and two-thirds scoreless innings of two-hit ball out of the bullpen to get the win, and Mike Crotta (0-1) suffered the loss. Seven Power batters had multi-hit games. Brantley and Caufield both had three-hit games, and Brantley knocked in four runs. The Power improved to 12-3 with the win and the Crawdads fell to 7-8 with the loss. The Power will finish the four-game series against Hickory Tuesday night. The Power will start right hander Mike McClendon (0-0, 0.64) and the Crawdads will counter with right hander Eric Krebs (1-0, 0.90). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

  13. Link while active, text follows: www.montgomeryadvertiser..../704230330 Huntsville's Katin able to block out distractions By Stacy Long Montgomery Advertiser The cloud caught onto Brendan Katin's trail last weekend. Katin thought it was a depraved joke when he was first told he had tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs, filed an appeal and played the last week with that cloud hovering over him. Katin, whose 11th-inning home run gave the Huntsville Stars a 2-1 win over the Montgomery Biscuits on Sunday, is awaiting word of his final judgment, though he's positive he'll be cleared. "I have no clue how long it will be," Katin said. "I'm not worried about it." Katin was told last weekend of his positive test and remains eligible while Major League Baseball processes his appeal. A spring training drug test put Katin in line for a drug-related suspension, despite his full belief of innocence. "He knows he's a clean kid and we all believe him," Stars hitting coach Sandy Guerrero said. "He doesn't even take vitamins. He's just a naturally strong kid." It was already a trying season for the outfielder. Katin entered Sunday with a .208 average and nine RBIs -- but much of that was from one game. Without last Tuesday's 4-of-6, six-RBI night, his average would have been .140. Sunday's game helped his numbers. He hit an RBI double in the fourth inning and homered in the 11th, taking a 1-0 pitch from Brian Henderson over the left-field wall. "I've been trying too hard," Katin said. "I've been trying to hit home runs instead of focusing on hitting it up the middle and letting the home runs come. I have to let things happen." Henderson started Katin with a curveball and came back with another that Katin didn't miss. The two-out homer was Huntsville's first hit since the fifth inning. Henderson walked the next hitter and had only those two blemishes on a two-inning appearance. "Aside from that one pitch, (Henderson) did a good job," Biscuits manager Billy Gardner said. Said Henderson: "If you look at the bright side, I guess I did all right except for one pitch. I still let the team down." Montgomery scored in the first inning and rested on its laurels for the final 10. The Biscuits stranded 11 runners and were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

  17. Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/story/S...almPilots/ Powered by PalmPilots Jacob Messer Charleston Daily Mail Sportswriter In his last act before the first pitch, West Virginia Power left-hander Mike Ramlow removed his cap and wiped away the sweat. Then, with his hat on his head again, Ramlow repositioned himself ... not on the mound but in the stands, where he was armed with a stylus and pocket computer instead of a ball and glove. Don't get the wrong idea. He wasn't passing the time between innings playing Solitaire or Tetris. There was no time for lollygagging on this night. He was working even if he weren't pitching. In fact, his assignment in the stands was as important as his counterparts' on the mound. From his seat below the Appalachian Power Park press boxes, Ramlow had to track every pitch, its result and its location for both teams throughout the game using PalmScout (the software) on a PalmPilot (the hardware). When the game ended, the information Ramlow entered into the handheld was transferred to a desktop computer and e-mailed to a company that converted it into a report card and stored it in a database for future use. Power pitching coach John Curtis received an almost immediate evaluation of his pitchers' performances that night. "The most important tool for us is it helps us evaluate and helps our pitchers self-evaluate," Curtis said. Reid Nichols, the Milwaukee Brewers' director of player development, agreed. "It's mainly for the pitchers," said Nichols, who watched West Virginia extend its winning streak to nine games with an 8-5 victory over Hickory (N.C.) on Sunday. "It lets them look at their performance pitch by pitch in many categories -- two-strike counts, hard-hit balls, behind in the count, ahead in the count. "It actually gives them a report card. It gives them an A, B, C, D or F in each category. It points out where they did well and where they could have done better." In addition to the report cards, coaches and players can pull up an all-but-unlimited amount of data from the last game, the last week, the last month, even the last year. "You can break it down in an infinite number of ways," Nichols said. "You can find out how many times a guy threw a slider in a 2-1 count during the season." The key is the information -- or, perhaps more importantly, the person entering it. "The only bias in it is the input," said Curtis, who uses non-throwing starters to track pitches. "He has to see accurately where the pitches are and what the pitches are. If he doesn't, it's just a whole bunch of mumbo jumbo. If he does, we should get a fairly thorough evaluation of their performances." In other words, do a good job and his teammates benefit; do a bad job and they don't. No wonder Ramlow looked like he would rather have faced Albert Pujols with his worst stuff Wednesday, when he served as the team's "guinea pig" on its first attempt at properly using the program and device this season. "Actually, it's pretty easy and pretty self-explanatory," Ramlow said afterward. "But if you get behind, you're screwed. You can't go back and fix it." Fortunately for Ramlow and the rest of his pitch-tracking teammates, the creator of the program -- Inside Edge Inc. -- can. "They do a great job of supporting us any time there is a problem," Nichols said of Inside Edge, a 23-year-old Minneapolis-based company that provides scouting services and tools to professional and amateur baseball teams. "Sometimes, our players hit a bump in the road while logging that information. They will clean up any errors or mistakes that they can see. They will send it back to us with clean stats." The Brewers, the Power's parent organization, don't use PalmScout, but all of their full-season, minor league clubs do. In addition to low Class A West Virginia, that group includes high Class A Brevard County (Fla.), Class AA Huntsville (Ala.) and Class AAA Nashville (Tenn.). "I actually initiated this three years ago," Nichols said. "I thought it would have some benefit. We started with the Double-A and Triple-A clubs, then we decided to expand it. "(West Virginia was) trying to break into it last year, but they didn't have a lot of success with it. Last year, it was sporadic. This year, it should be an everyday occurrence. "The technology is a little better with those handheld Palms now. We had a problem before because the PalmPilot we had had a camera on it, and if you accidentally hit the button on the camera, it would throw the game out." Ramlow said he expects the Power pitchers to benefit from the new-and-improved system. "It's going to change our game plans a lot," Ramlow said. "We're going to have a better approach out there on the mound."

Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Sounds win fifth in a row A two-out hit tops Cubs in 10 By MIKE ORGAN Tennessean Staff Writer Chris Barnwell hit a soft line drive to right field with two outs in the 10th to score Ozzie Chavez and give the Sounds a 2-1 win Sunday over Iowa. It was Nashville's first extra inning game of the season and came before a Greer Stadium crowd of 5,885. The victory extended the Sounds win streak to five games, which ties their longest of the year. Nashville has won 10 of its last 12 games. Barnwell's hit landed in a gap between the first baseman and right fielder. "It was the perfect hit because it's hard to throw somebody out on that kind of ball,'' Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said. "It was well-placed and we needed it." The victory gave Nashville a two-game lead over Iowa in the PCL American Conference Northern Division. Both teams failed throughout the game to capitalize after getting runners on bases. Iowa was 0-for-7 and the Sounds 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Iowa got in position to take the lead in the ninth and 10th. In the ninth Iowa's Scott Moore and Geovany Soto reached first and second with one out. But Buck Coats hit into a double play to end the inning. In the 10th, Angel Pagan and Eric Patterson reached first and second with only one out. But Mike Fontenot hit into a double play. Barnwell was 0-for-4 before his game-winning hit. "It was a fastball in and I kept my hands inside and luckily it fell in between everyone,'' Barnwell said. "It's good to win in extra innings. Anytime it's a close game you definitely want to win them. You can build a lot of momentum off of that. You don't ever want to come close and lose one. It's good to get wins here at home and kind of pull away with the lead in the division if you can.'' ***Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Braun's six homers tied for PCL lead By MIKE ORGAN Tennessean Staff Writer Sounds third baseman Ryan Braun stayed hot at the plate in Sunday's 2-1 win over Iowa. Braun's home run in the sixth inning gave the Sounds a 1-0 lead. It was Braun's sixth homer of the season, which is tied for the PCL lead. He has had a hit in 10 of his last 12 contests and is 13-of-18 for extra bases (seven doubles, six home runs). Gulin activated: Left-hand pitcher Lindsay Gulin was activated Sunday from the disabled list by the Sounds to fill the open roster spot created Saturday when pitcher Chris Spurling's contract was purchased by Milwaukee. Gulin has spent all season on the Sounds' disabled list and will make his first appearance in the PCL since 2003 when he was with Las Vegas. Aquino's arrival: Pitcher Greg Aquino, optioned to Nashville on Saturday, will be in town today. The Sounds must make a roster move to make room for Aquino, 29, who posted a 5.87 ERA in eight relief appearances for Milwaukee. All five of Aquino's runs were surrendered in his last two appearances. First run: Iowa's Mike Fontenot's home run over the right-field wall, which tied the score 1-1 in the eighth inning, was the first run scored against Sounds' reliever Mitch Stetter this season in eight appearances. It was Fontenot's second homer. Nashville has three blown saves this year and two were by Stetter. The other was by Spurling. Dennis Sarfate (1-0) relieved Stetter in the ninth. Ouch: In the seventh inning Iowa pitcher Cory Bailey was hit in the foot off a hit by Vinny Rottino. The shot ricocheted off Bailey's left foot and rolled nearly to the third baseline. Rottino reached first on an infield single and Bailey was able to stay in the game.
  25. Link while active, text follows: www.nashvillecitypaper.co...s_id=55794 Capellan?s petulance costs him promotion By Nate Rau, Nashville City Paper Sports Correspondent The Jose Capellan saga is dragging on. The Milwaukee Brewers tried to teach Jose Capellan a lesson on Saturday. Whether he goes to the task of learning it or not will remain to be seen. Capellan demanded to be traded after he didn?t make Milwaukee?s opening day roster. There were reports that he contemplated retirement and debated not even reporting to Nashville to begin the season. Capellan has been distant from his Sounds teammates and hasn?t relented from his trade request. Then, last week Capellan took his anger to another level. He skipped out on two games during the Sounds? road trip to Oklahoma. During that time, Capellan went without pay and he eventually reported before the road trip ended. On Saturday, Capellan paid for his whining ways. Even though he?s been the Sounds? top reliever this year, displaying his trademark top-flight stuff and not yielding a run in six appearances, Capellan was passed over for a promotion to the Brewers on Saturday. Instead, Milwaukee called up Chris Spurling (1.86 ERA) from Nashville to replace Greg Aquino. Brewers manager Ned Yost flat out said Capellan would have gotten the promotion had he not bailed on his Sounds teammates last week. Spurling, who benefited from Capellan?s petulance, said Sounds were insulted by his no-show. ?We were all pretty upset about it,? Spurling said on the Brewers? team site. ?It was kind of a slap in the face to us, but the guy is going to do what he wants to do. You can?t really say anything about it.? Aquino?s status in question: Aquino will arrive in Nashville today, though it is unclear when he?ll be added to the roster. He was experiencing tightness in his throwing arm, but the Brewers said he should be available to pitch after a few days of rest. Aquino had a 5.87 ERA for the Brewers before being demoted. In order to add Aquino to the Sounds roster, Milwaukee will have to clear a roster spot. Reliever Lindsay Gulin replaced Spurling on the Sounds roster.
