The feeling didn't last long for Lum, however, after the long-time member of the Chisox organization, was released shortly thereafter. Lum spent the previous 16 seasons in the organization as their minor league roving hitting instructor. After getting released by the White Sox, Lum was hired by the Milwaukee Brewers organization and was sent to Charleston to become the West Virginia Power's hitting coach this season. The White Sox's loss quickly turned into the Brewers' gain. Lum was selected as the South Atlantic League's Coach of the Year on the 2006 SAL All-Star Team Tuesday. The team was voted on by all of the 16 SAL teams' field managers, general managers, and team broadcasters. "They probably just named the oldest," the 60-year old Lum said, laughing, when he was informed of the honor after the Power earned a 3-2 victory over Greensboro at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday night in front of a crowd of 2,783. "I'm very proud of the honor, and it really means a lot to me for the simple reason that I was with the White Sox for all those years, and the reason they didn't hire me back was because they said I had lost my passion for teaching." In addition to Lum winning the SAL coach honor, the Power placed the most members on the All-Star team of any of the 16 SAL clubs, with four players. The Power selections are pitcher Will Inman, third baseman Mat Gamel, catcher Angel Salome, and outfielder Lorenzo Cain. Lum has been coaching for 23 years. During his tenure, he had never instructed at the Class A level before this year with the Power. The Hawaii native was the hitting coach at the big league level for the White Sox in 1985 and with the Kansas City Royals in 1988-89. Lum also played 15 years in the Major Leagues with the Braves, Reds and Cubs, sporting a career batting average of .247 with 90 home runs, 431 runs batted in, and played in over 1,500 Major League games. This season, Lum has coached the Power to the highest batting average (.277) of any team in the league. That would be a Charleston Class A club record, if it stands. The next highest is Asheville at .271. "We have a lot of very talented kids who do a lot of good things naturally, and we aren't finished yet," Lum said. "We still have six games left with them but certainly, some have a bright future." Power Manager Mike Guerrero added, "These guys have worked so hard and haven't stopped all season. We have great talent with great attitudes all around with this ball club." Four of the five All-star selections were pivotal in the Power's home victory over Greensboro on Tuesday. Despite earning a no-decision, Inman was on the mound and had another great performance, pitching six strong innings, giving up two runs on three hits. He struck out 11 Greensboro batters. He's 10-1 with a stellar 1.40 ERA. Meanwhile, in a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning and after the first two Power players were retired, Cain and Gamel drew walks, and Mike Bell hit a line single to right-center field to give the Power (34-29), in second place in the SAL Northern Division, its fourth straight victory and eighth win in the last 10 games. Leading up to all three players delivering, they were a combined 1-for-11 at the plate in their previous trips to the plate throughout the night. "We all push each other to just stay upbeat and get it done in clutch situations," Cain said. "It goes back to Coach Lum. He tells us to keep our heads up and stay at an even keel, not getting too high or low. He's a great hitting coach." He's also one that Milwaukee is certainly glad to have.

  18. Link while active, text follows: www.bellinghamherald.com/...004/SPORTS Down the home stretch: Season finally coming to a close DANE RENKERT FOR THE BELLINGHAM HERALD All of a sudden a season that seemed so long is now coming to a quick and abrupt ending. Nine games left and there's a realization that parting with my teammates and coaches is no longer something in the future - it's now. Looking back on the season the things I will miss most are those things that at the time I hated. Like the long bus rides filled with playing cards and watching movies and simply finding unique ways to pass the time. Thanks to those long bus rides I'll ask former teammates what they miss most about being away from the game, and their answers will be the same: Simply, being around the guys and going to battle with your teammates. There's going through the sometimes unbearable and vicious cycle of negativity, overcoming it with success or vice versa. And now there's no more waking up and realizing the only thing you have to do on that day is go play a game that I am fortunate enough to call work. As I have said before I am lucky enough to have played with such a diverse group of players filled with those that have raw talent and others that are overachievers. Playing with a centerfielder that runs a 6.19-second 60-yard dash, yet each day makes impossible plays look routine. There's a catcher built like a rock whose first name is Angel, and an emotional team leader whose nickname is coincidentally "Homey." Thus another thing I will miss is shaking their hands on second base after winning that day's game. It's impossible to say enough about a group that for six months have been my teammates and my family who have given nothing but their blood, sweat and tears for the game Personally speaking it's been a season similar to the story of "Jekyll and Hyde," as if two different people pitched on both sides of the midway point. The numbers don't lie. Here's a breakdown. Pre-All Star break I was 5-2 with a 1.29 earned-run average in 24 games with five saves. In 42 innings I gave up 27 hits and six earned runs. After the All-Star break I went 0-6 with a 6.21 ERA in 23 games with one save and in 33 1/3 innings gave up 46 hits and 23 earned runs. Although I lead my team in several pitching categories - including appearances and holds - those are dramatic changes and something that will be addressed this offseason, whether it be psychologically or physically. This is a game where a player has to take advantage of opportunities, and those opportunities are created by hard work and consistency. Either way you look at it, I still have a uniform on and will do whatever it takes to keep it on as long as possible with no regrets of the two things we all contol - effort and attitude.

  20. Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/news/Sp...006082922/ Power approaching more individual records Michael Dailey Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter When the South Atlantic League playoffs begin next week, the West Virginia Power will not be a participant. But despite the team's inability to reach postseason, there have been a few superb individual performances on display throughout the season. A pair of Class A franchise records already have fallen and with seven games to play, a couple more marks are within reach as the Power opens its final home series of the season at 7:05 p.m. today (6:05 Central) against Greensboro. Outfielder Lorenzo Cain started the record breaking by surpassing the former club mark for hits in a season (150) set by Bobby Perna in 1992. Cain, a 17th round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2004 draft, currently has a league-best 154 hits and ranks fourth in the batting title race with a .305 average. With 86 runs on the season, Cain likely will fall short of the franchise record of 106 set by Scott Pose in 1990, but has a shot at second place if he can surpass the 93 runs scored by Dee Jenkins in 1993. With another 40 at bats this season, Cain also will break the club mark of 544 set by Steve Gibralter in the 1991 season. Cain is only 15 at bats behind second-place holder Alcides Escobar, who had 520 at bats last season. Fellow outfielder Darren Ford also placed his name in the franchise record book by surpassing the single-season stolen base mark of 61, established by Mike Curry in 1999. Ford, who's blessed with world class speed, has 62 stolen bases entering tonight's play and with 91 runs on the season has an even greater chance to reach Jenkins' 1993 run total. Another record within reach is the club, single-season home run mark of 20 set by former Alley Cat Jason Parsons during the 1997 season. Third baseman Mat Gamel enters tonight with 17 homers, good for sixth in the league. Gamel has three homers this season against Greensboro pitching, including two during a three-game series in North Carolina last week. However, it's not just Power batters that have had solid seasons. Right-handed starter Will Inman followed up a 6-0 record as a rookie in Helena last season, by entering tonight's series with a 10-1 record and a sterling 1.30 earned run average. Inman, tonight's starting pitcher, has allowed a miniscule 14 earned runs in 97 innings pitched. Assuming the Power plays its remaining seven scheduled games, Inman must toss a combined 13 2/3 innings in his final two starts of the season, to qualify for the league ERA title. "We had a lot of ups and downs during the season, but in terms of how these guys have improved throughout the course of the season, it's been outstanding," said Power Manager Mike Guerrero. "We've seen a lot of maturity by the players and we've seen a lot of development in both the baseball and personal sides of the players. "Individually, there's been a lot of accomplishments for the players to be proud of. When you talk about 19- and 20-year-olds reaching those kinds of goals in a league with an average age of 23 or 24, that says a lot about the development for these kids this year." But not all the records were set on the playing field. In 62 home dates entering this evening, 233,932 fans have passed through the turnstiles, surpassing last season's previous record of 233,555. "I think this season was fantastic," said Power General Manager Andy Milovich. "It felt good from our standpoint, to be able to come into it with an entire off-season to prepare. "We took a step forward from an attendance standpoint, from an operational standpoint and on the field we took a step forward.'' Now, Milovich and his staff will spend at least a portion of the coming off-season to improve operations in the club's third season in Appalachian Power Park. "In the first couple weeks of the off-season, we'll kind of take a step back and the staff will sit down and brainstorm a little bit about things we can do next season," Milovich said.
