  2. West Virginia Press Release: CHARLESTON, WV (August 29, 2006) - The West Virginia Power, Class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers have made another roster move. Today, left handed pitcher Kyle Pawelczyk was activated from the disabled list and placed back on the active roster. Pawelczyk will take the place of catcher Angel Salome who was placed on the disabled list for the rest of the season. Salome broke his ankle sliding into second base against Hickory on August 15th and will be out of action until spring training. Salome, a 2006 South Atlantic League All Star, hit .292 with ten homeruns and 85 RBI over 105 games in the 2006 season. Pawelczyk was added to the Power roster back on July 5th and then placed on the disabled list eleven days later due to a back strain. Pawelczyk went 0-0 over two appearances with a 3.86 ERA before going on the DL.

Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/sports/huntsvi...amp;coll=1 Stars show some spunk Hot Huntsville rallies for 6-5 win over Mississippi By MARK McCARTER Huntsville Times Sports Staff, markcolumn@aol.com During the Stars' recent hot streak, their fundamentals - defense, baserunning, smart play - has been relatively solid. So, too, the pitching. On Monday night, they trembled like Barney Fife reaching for his holster. It was a flashback to their ugly days of midsummer. Watching things unfold, catcher Lou Palmisano was thinking, "This cannot happen. We can't go down this road now." Then, as Palmisano said, "The second-half team showed up in the eighth inning." It arrived in the dramatic, game-rescuing person of outfielder Brendan Katin, who tied things with a two-run homer, and Palmisano, whose solo homer was the margin in Huntsville's 6-5 victory over Mississippi. "I thought all along we were going to find a way to win," said third baseman Ryan Braun, whose eighth-inning double greeted Mississippi reliever Ralph Roberts, making his season debut with the Braves and becoming the ultimate victim of the rally. For some math: The Stars are 38-25 and maintain a 3 1/2 game lead over both Chattanooga and Tennessee, both of whom won Monday, in the Southern League North. The Stars' "magic number" is four; any combination of Huntsville wins and losses by Chattanooga and Tennessee to equal four will assure them the second-half division pennant. The Stars have won seven in a row. They broke club records Monday with their 11th consecutive home win and their 21st win for the month. They have won 27 of 33 dating back to July 21 and have yet to lose at home in August. Palmisano, dirty as "Peanuts' " Pig-Pen and with an unyielding smile, sat in the dugout a few minutes after his heroics. "(Roberts) was leaving pitches up and it was 1-1 and I was thinking he would go right at me," Palmisano said. "I'm hitting seventh in the order, I'm not a big threat and I hadn't hit a home run in God knows how long." The emotions went from "relief when Katin hit the home run to excitement when I hit the home run to I don't know what after that," he said. Katin got thing going by doubling home Braun for a 1-0 lead in the first, but Katin dropped a routine fly to put Josh Burrus aboard, and Josh Arteaga singled him home. "I need to work on my defense," he said sheepishly. Ozzie Chavez briefly regained the lead in the fifth when he singled and scored on a rocket shot by Steve Moss off the foot of third baseman Arteaga. Mike Rozema's two-run double gave Mississippi a 3-2 lead, but Brad Nelson's homer tied the game at 3-all. Yunel Escobar's two-run single off Matt Yeatman made it 5-3 in the eighth before the Stars' rally. Joe Valentine wrapped up his 10th save since joining the team July 15, whiffing ex-big leaguer, the player-coach Eddie Perez for the final out.

  6. Let's see, Zach Braddock, Steve Garrison, Derek Miller -- former Northeast Area Scout Tony Blengino had a knack with lefties, huh? Nice job by Zach tonight. Throw in Darren Ford, Angel Salome, Mark Rogers, not a bad track record there for Tony, now working in the central scouting office with Jack Z.
  7. In progress: Arizona Royals 8, Arizona Brewers 0, after three innings Ah, those crazy Maryvale kids; 22nd round pick J.T. King made two early-season appearances with Helena and hadn't been seen since -- he pitched an inning to start this game; Shane Hill didn't get defensive help, but he still hasn't had a good first summer on the mound for the A-Crew; the boys have three more errors than hits (zero) thus far...

  10. Brendan Katin ON FIRE! Two-run blast ties it up in the bottom of the 8th! Great Stars game tonight! EDIT: Later in the 8th, Lou Palmisano first HR since May 29th! 6-5 Stars!!
  11. We jinxed Joe Thatcher today, a single and a walk in the 8th -- after a Lou Palmisano passed ball put the runners on 2nd and 3rd, Thatcher got a big strikeout for the second out of the inning but was then lifted for Matt Yeatman, who surrendered a two-run ground ball single. Stars down, 5-3, bottom of the 8th. Let Joe pitch to righties, too!
  12. Former 40-man RHP Tim Bausher traded from the Red Sox to the Reds, along with cash, for RHP Mike Burns. Bausher is not on the Reds' 40-man roster. He'll be assigned to AAA Louisville. He was a big leaguer for one day with the Red Sox, but did not appear in the game, which I imagine does not get you in the Baseball Encyclopedia.
  13. This is from Sunday's West Virginia game, but at this time of day, it will likely get a wider audience in this Link Report: Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/news/Sp...006082840/ Power wins as records fall Chuck McGill For the Charleston Daily Mail Records are made to be broken and West Virginia Power General Manager Andy Milovich is ecstatic another one fell to pieces at Appalachian Power Park on Sunday. A crowd of 1,821 witnessed the Power defeat the Lexington Legends, 4-0. The turnout, while sparse by normal standards, pushed the Power's season attendance to new heights, setting a new record for Charleston minor league baseball, a mark that was established last season. "It says a lot about the community and its commitment to baseball and the ballpark," Milovich said. The new record now stands at 233,933 for a single season, and the Power still has three home games remaining this week. Last year's season attendance was 233,555. "It was nice as a staff to see it grow, what we set as a foundation, and how we've built upon that," Milovich said. Milovich, however, said his goal entering the season was to reach 250,000 in attendance, but a handful of rainouts and a brutal August schedule hurt the organization's chances of reaching the mark. That will serve as extra motivation for Milovich as the Power embarks on its third season in its new ballpark in 2007. "We want to continue to grow," he said. "We want to promote aggressively, sell aggressively and reach out and build outside of the city of Charleston." The attendance mark wasn't the only Charleston baseball record to be surpassed this weekend, as leadoff hitter Darren Ford swiped his 62nd base to establish a new record for steals in a season. Ford tied the record in the sixth inning and bested it with another steal in the seventh in a 3-1 win over Lexington Saturday. On Sunday, Ford found a quicker way to round the bases, blasting a fourth-inning home run to left field to help the Power cap a two-game sweep of the Legends. It was an eventful weekend for Ford, who had a host of family members on hand for the series. In the short series, he scored three of the Power's seven runs, stole the aforementioned two bases and clubbed his seventh homer of the year. He also led off the game with a base hit, which was followed by a Lorenzo Cain double and an RBI groundout by Mat Gamel, which scored Ford. Mike Bell singled home Cain to give the Power a 2-0 cushion after one inning. Michael Brantley added an RBI double in the third and Ford wrapped up the scoring in the following inning with his homer. He was happy his family was there to experience it with him. "It was good because they are always here to support me, they've always been there for me, especially my mom," he said. The spotlight also shined brightly on the Power pitching staff this weekend. In the two-game series, it allowed just one earned run. Steve Garrison tossed six shutout innings Sunday to improve his season record to 7-6. He allowed only two hits and struck out four. "He pitches consistently well," Power pitching coach John Curtis said. "He has things to work on, but he has all the tools, the poise, the work habits. "He's a heck of a young pitcher." Garrison, just 19 years of age, has posted a 3.45 earned run average this season, and Curtis says he's outgrown his stay in low-A baseball. "He's proved himself, he's mastered everything he needs to here," Curtis said. "He's improved his command, he knows when to throw strikes, and when not to throw strikes. "He has four pitches he can get over whenever he wants. He's really distinguished himself with his pitching." As a team, it was West Virginia's 10th shutout. The Power improved to 33-29 in the second half, and 72-59 overall. The Power is off today before beginning the season's final home stand on Tuesday against Greensboro.

  23. Link while active, text follows: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...k_brrrok_1 Math favors Stars after win Gallardo's pitching helps pad North lead to 3 1/2 games By MARK McCARTER Huntsville Times Sports Staff, markcolumn@aol.com Outside looking in, a 3 1/2-game lead with eight games remaining looks pretty comfortable for the Huntsville Stars. Inside, that lead has all the comfort of a cactus couch. Don't dare suggest, even in the aftermath Sunday's 4-2 victory over Mississippi, led by the wondrous pitching of the 20-year-old prodigy, Yovani Gallardo, that it's time to order up a case of cheap champagne and plan the pennant party. "We've got to take care of our business and play 'em one at a time," said manager Don Money. And, oh yeah, the fat lady hasn't yet sung and it ain't over 'til it's over. But it gets closer to over every day. The Stars (37-25) stretched their win streak to six and padded their Southern League North lead to 3 1/2 games over Chattanooga and Tennessee (both 34-29 on the half after losing Sunday afternoon), the two teams in their rearview mirror. The best the Lookouts or Smokies could do is win 41 games. In terms of a baseball's familiar "magic number," it's five - the needed combination of wins by Huntsville and losses by the two pursuers. The Stars have eight games on their schedule, including tonight's 7:05 date with the Braves. Or, in terms of Money's Magic Number, "42 will win it." Gallardo was in total command for eight innings, allowing only a pair of Ray Serrano singles and striking out eight. "Just outstanding," said pitching coach Rich Sauveur. "He was aggressive. He went right at them." What was working? Before Gallardo could respond, catcher Lou Palmisano chimed in, "Everything!" The last outing, everything wasn't working for Gallardo. He got through only four innings in a game at West Tenn. "I had a rough one last outing and I made adjustments. I was rushing to the plate a little bit, flying open," he said. Ryan Braun began the Stars' assault with a first-inning homer, clearing the center field wall 405 feet from home. It was his 13th of the season, putting him 13th in the league despite having played only 53 Southern League games. Brad Nelson walked to open the fourth, took second on a wild pitch and scored on an Ozzie Chavez sacrifice fly. Steve Moss drove home Palmisano and Gallardo (who had two hits) with a double for the 4-zip lead. The Braves nicked Gallardo for a pair of runs in the ninth, but Travis Phelps doused the threat for his fifth save. "We just need to worry about ourselves," Money said. "We got pretty good hitting tonight, just enough, and it was a great outing for Gallardo. If we win five more, we're in. That's the way you have to look at it."
  24. Because the Rockies have a team in the short-season Class A Northwest League, their Pioneer League team (Casper) is their lowest rung rookie squad. That's brutal for those kids. Imagine if the Brewers Arizona club were representing the organization against Billings, Orem, and the other Pioneer League powers -- ouch.
