  5. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com/ WITH A LITTLE BIT OF HELPSTARS TIE GAME AND WIN ON PAIR OF WALKS A 6-0 lead, four double plays and two-hit shutout pitching from starter Dan Smith might sound like a lost cause for the Stars Sunday afternoon, but after Mississippi's bullpen came in, the Stars took a lost cause, found a ray of hope and piece-by-piece, chipped away with the largest comeback victory of the season....... To add to the celebration, the Tennessee Smokies were blanked by Homer Bailey, who struck out 11 over five innings, cutting their first place margin to 3½ games........ It's going to be a joyous ride back home....... The Stars end their road trip winning seven out of 10 games, which as Brett Pollock said on-air, was necessary if the Stars were to have any chance at staying in a pennant race........ Tuesday, five games at the Joe with Carolina, our first look at the Mudcats, if you can believe it, then over to Pringles Park against a Diamond Jaxx team that ran the dickens off our pitching staff. Hopefully, they've learned to quicken their deliveries to the plate, which is how Chris Walker, Eric Patterson, Nic Jackson, et. al. were taking advantage of us. But the details are for another time. With Chipper Jones back in Atlanta, no one was interested anymore in baseball at Trustmark Park, save for the true baseball fans. Attendance fell by nearly 180%, and once again, it was a sticky-hot 93° at gametime. Manny Parra went five innings for the third time in as many starts since being brought up from Brevard County on the 31st of July....... He gave up three straight singles in the 2nd inning before getting his first two outs and trailed 3-0 at the end of two....... In the 3rd, he got the first two outs this time, but then hit Michael Rosamond with a pitch, gave up a single to Josh Burrus, a passed ball and a single later, found himself trailing 5-0........ Parra quietly retired the Braves in the 4th, but a grounder between the legs of Ryan Braun allowed another run in the 5th, and the Stars found themselves in a 6-0 hole while Dan Smith was holding the Stars scoreless on two hits -- a two-out double by Drew Anderson in the 2nd and a two-out single by Jeff Eure in the 4th. The game started to turn after Braves manager Jeff Blauser went to the bullpen and Joey Devine in the top of the 6th....... It's a mystery to me why Smith, who now has a string of 10 consecutive scoreless innings against the Stars, was taken out so early, but I appreciate that he was...... Devine, the first player since Bob Horner to be called up to Atlanta the same year he was drafted, was called up from Class A - Myrtle Beach (Carolina) Friday........ He struck out Steve Moss and Callix Crabbe on sliders, but Braun wasn't impressed. He swung at a 1-0 pitch and sent it deep down the left field line for his 8th home run, landing on the roof of the picnic area. Sean White, who was supposed to follow Smith in the game, came in relief of Devine....... Another mistake by Blauser in hindsight, but what did he have to lose with a 6-1 lead, right? But very fortuitous for the Stars, so no complaints here........ This was White's first look at the Stars since starting against Ben Sheets on opening day, when he gave up two runs on four hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings, leaving with a 2-2 ballgame....... The Stars opened up on White quickly. Anderson legged out an infield single up the middle, Lou Palmisano lined one to right, and Ozzie Chavez followed with a liner to left to load the bases with nobody out........ With Carlos Lee, pinch-hitting for Chris Mabeus, at the plate, White uncorked a wild pitch on a 1-1 slider to the plate, scoring Anderson...... It's now 6-2, nobody out, and runners in scoring position, but Lee flied out to Onil Joseph for the first out....... In for Steve Moss comes Travis Ezi, who hit .286 in July, but 3-for-18 on the road trip....... Ezi made it a 6-4 game by cracking a line drive single to center, scoring Palmisano and Chavez........ Guilder Rodriguez, batting for the first time since replacing Callix Crabbe, a .306 hitter in his last 20 games, grounded out to short for the 2nd out, but it sent Ezi into scoring position....... Braun then walked, but a wild pitch on ball four put runners on the corners....... Then Brad Nelson, who ends up hitting .346 on this road trip, raising his average 17 points to .234, made it 6-5 with a single to shallow left. It was his 25th RBI of the year and 154th of his career with the Stars, enabling him to pass Webster Garrison (1991, 92, 96, 98) for 4th place on the club's all-time RBI list......... After a double-steal moving Braun and Nelson into scoring position, the Stars nearly took the lead after Jeff Eure, on a 3-2 pitch, hit a sharp grounder off the glove of Rosamond, but Mike Rozema picked up the ball and quickly fed to White, just nipping Eure at first. Luther Hackman, in his debut with the Huntsville Stars, sandwiched a pair of back-to-back singles by Luis Hernandez and Brandon Jones in between a strikeout on Rozema and back-to-back strikeouts of Rosamond and Burrus......... Hackman, when he was a Carolina Mudcat in 1999, beat the Stars, 5-4, May 8, which was Kelly Wunsch's debut with Huntsville. At this point, I wasn't around to put in a tape in the recorder to tell you much more than you can get if you read MILB's log of the game, but the 8th was the dramatic point of the game for the Stars, as Drew Anderson opened the inning with another infield single...... Palmisano then walked and both runners moved into scoring position with no one out on a sac bunt by Chavez...... Pinch-hitter Ron Acuna, who hit .324 on this trip, was walked to load the bases....... Ezi then walked in the tying run on a 3-2 pitch and Guilder Rodriguez drew four balls to break the 6-6 tie, his 3rd RBI since the start of the season. Corey Thurman will get a chance to pick up his 5th win on Tuesday against Carolina right-hander James Russ..... Russ is 2-2 with a 3.33 ERA since July. He has a 7.99 ERA with runners on base over 56 1/3 innings this season. The Stars hit a mere .250 on this road trip, but in the last eight games, the rotation logged an ERA of 1.93....... The Stars had four .300 hitters on this road trip: Ron Acuna (.324), Callix Crabbe (.368), Jeff Eure (.304), and surprisingly, Brad Nelson (.346). The Stars have won 14 of their last 19 games, hitting .264 in the process, but the starting rotation has put up a fine 3.09 ERA and it's been going down....... Nelson's hit in the 7th inning moved him into 9th place on the Stars all-time hit list, ahead of Joel Wolfe (1993-95). Nelson is 5th on the list in games played (291) and is 4th in at-bats (1,049). He is one of only six Stars in their history with over 1,000 career at-bats. An impressive, but rather dubious distinction......... Ryan Braun is hitting .297 on this road trip, but he has kept his average above .300 since July 29th. He's hit .328 during the Stars' 19-game hot streak, but Callix Crabbe is the one swinging the hot bat, going 25-for-71 with a .352 average........ Aside from Carlos Lee's .316, the Stars' two other catchers, Lou Palmisano and J.C. Boscan, have not pulled their weight, going a combined 11-for-67 (.164). Chris Michalak (1995-96) is back in the majors for the first time since 2002. The Reds purchased his contract from Class AAA-Louisville (Int'l.). They like the 35-year old's outstanding pickoff move. He was 9-5, 3.00 for the Bats in 22 starts. Ryan Knox may be done in pro ball. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays released him August 2nd after hitting .149 in 25 games...... Knox played with the Stars from 2001-2004, hitting .236 with six HRs and 52 RBIs in 255 games, tying him for 17th on the Stars' all-time list. The Stars will open the 2007 season at home against the Braves on April 5........ The Southern League has released their 2007 schedule, keeping the present five-game series format "to cut down our travel and eliminate back-to-back series" according to league president Don Mincher........The 2007 SL All-Star game will be played at Trustmark Park....... The Stars will finish the season, like this season, at Hoover Met against the Barons........ Look for the calendar-type schedule on my web site soon.
  6. Nashville Site: Sounds, Isotopes Game Suspended Due To Rain ALBUQUERQUE ? Sunday evening?s Pacific Coast League contest between the Nashville Sounds and Albuquerque Isotopes was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the third inning at Isotopes Park with the home team holding a 3-0 lead. The game will be completed to its nine-inning conclusion on Monday evening beginning at 5:00 p.m. CT. Immediately following the completion, the Sounds and Isotopes will wrap up their four-game series with a seven-inning finale. Nashville (64-57) will enter play on Monday holding a 1 1/2-game lead over Iowa in the PCL American Conference Northern Division. Nashville fell behind 2-0 in the second when Albuquerque left fielder Chris Aguila led off the bottom of the frame with a single against Dana Eveland and scored the game?s first run one batter later on Tom Wilson?s RBI double to center. After a Matt Cepicky double put runner on second and third, Wilson scored on a Nick Trzesniak sacrifice fly. The Isotopes added to the lead in the third when a Vinny Rottino passed ball allowed Mike Kinkade to score an unearned run from third with two outs to make it a 3-0 contest. After Eveland issued a walk to Wilson to put runners on first and second with two down, the umpires called the teams off the field due to the downpour and the game was eventually suspended. Right-hander Justin Lehr (3-6, 3.75), who was slated to start Monday's series finale for Nashville, will instead take over for Eveland in the completion of the suspended game. Knuckleballer Jared Fernandez (6-4, 3.14) will make the start for the Sounds in Monday's seven-inning series finale. Isotopes southpaw Chris George (2-5, 5.80), who was scheduled to start tonight?s game but was pushed back due to illness, is tentatively scheduled to start Monday's seven-inning finale. The White Sox (4-10) quickly forged a 5-5 tie when play resumed, rallying for two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth. 14. Link while active, text follows: www.fdlreporter.com/apps/...30680/1310 Munson turns down Brewers to attend Mizzou By Doug Whiteley The Reporter dwhitele@fdlreporter.com After being offered a scholarship from the University of Missouri, getting drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers and then toying with the idea of attending junior college, Fond du Lac baseball player Wes Munson has decided he will attend Missouri this fall. "I was going to go to junior college and I told (the Missouri coaches) that and they upped my scholarship to 90 percent, so I'm not paying much to go there, so that was a deciding factor, too," Munson said. "And I've got a good shot to play right away." The Brewers, who selected Munson in the 37th round with the 1,112th pick in the June first-year player draft, wanted him to get more playing time and suggested he go to junior college, according to Munson. "I just figure, I've been drafted already out of high school. (The Brewers) wanted me to get more at-bats. Being from Wisconsin where we don't get a lot, they wanted me to get a year of at-bats in. I figure, go to a Big 12 school, and face the best pitchers in country and hopefully hit pretty well." Munson's shot to play professionally isn't done; he said it's only on hold for at least two seasons. "If I go there for two years and play in the Big 12, I should climb the draft ranks pretty well," Munson said. Munson hit .345 with a home run and 12 RBIs for Fondy, slugging .534 with an on base average of .435. He was named as a first-team shortstop on the all-Fox Valley Association team and was a third-team all-state infielder as selected by the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association. The right-hander has played for the Sheboygan A's this summer in the Wisconsin State League where he's hit .315 with 12 RBIs. Munson said the Missouri coaching staff has kept an eye on his play and is encouraged. "They said I could start right now," Munson said. "They came and watched me this summer and the infield coach said I could start at third for them." Before Munson starts his collegiate career, he caps his high school career with one more honor. He was selected by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association for its all-District 4 team. The Association selected more than 100 players in eight districts representing 48 states for its all-district teams. District 4 covered Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. From those states, 16 players made the District 4 team and four of them were infielders, including Munson. "I was pretty excited about that," he said.

Link while active, text follows: www.clarionledger.com/app...30383/1254 M-Braves end 3-game skid Rehabbing Atlanta star Jones contributes fourth-inning single before record crowd of 7,652 By Mike Christensen mchristensen@clarionledger.com PEARL ? Chipper Jones, the guest of honor, got a big hit and a big roar from the crowd Saturday night at Trustmark Park, but it took an assortment of small contributions from the regular crew for the Mississippi Braves to stop a three-game losing skid. Matt Harrison made a quality start, Yunel Escobar chipped in a clutch hit in the seventh inning and Zach Schreiber notched his 18th save as the M-Braves beat Huntsville 4-2. An announced crowd of 7,652, breaking the park record set Friday, turned out for the second and final game of Jones' injury rehabilitation assignment with the Double-A team. Jones, the Atlanta Braves' third baseman, went 1-for-2. He scored the game's first run in the fourth inning on a Jarrod Saltalamacchia sac fly, and then departed. He had planned for just two at-bats. Jones said Friday he hoped to be in Atlanta's lineup today against Milwaukee. Jones went on the DL on July 30 with a strained oblique in his left side. "You'd like to get some hits and please the crowd a little bit," Jones said after going hitless in Friday's game, which drew an announced 7,577. The crowd erupted Saturday when Jones ripped a 1-2 pitch from Saltillo native Tim Dillard up the middle to lead off the fourth. Dillard had struck out Jones in the first, throwing two fastballs past him and fanning him on an off-speed pitch. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thinking about it - I mean it's Chipper Jones," Dillard said. "This is the guy I've been watching on TV all these years." Dillard, son of former Ole Miss and major league player Steve Dillard, was Milwaukee's minor league pitcher of the year in 2005 and entered Saturday's game with an 8-7 record and 3.38 ERA in his first Double-A season. He went six innings Saturday, allowing two runs. M-Braves starter Harrison also went six, departing with a 2-1 lead. Onil Joseph's RBI single off Dillard in the fifth had given the M-Braves the 2-1 lead, but the Stars tied it in the seventh against Glenn Tucker (2-3), who wound up getting the win. Escobar delivered the go-ahead runs in the seventh with an opposite-field single that came with the bases loaded, two outs and a 2-2 count against Matt Yeatman. "It was a fastball away, and I tried to hit it hard to the right side," the Spanish-speaking Escobar said, with Joseph translating. "I'm feeling good (at the plate) right now. It's a long season and I want to finish strong." Schreiber made the lead stand up with a dominating display of power, fanning five in two perfect innings. "I'm just concentrating on trying to finish guys off, not blowing them away," said Schreiber, now 18-for-19 on save chances. "When I get two strikes, I want to finish it rather than let them get the bat on it." ***Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/sports/huntsvi...amp;coll=1 Stars notebook Covering the bases Mark McCarter, Huntsville Times The Stars' late-season drive toward a possible playoff spot may have begun too late, and many hurdles remain. But Huntsville seems on the way to at least winning the Alabama state championship. The Stars are 25-18 this year against the other three teams from the state. They are 12-7 against Birmingham, 9-6 vs. Mobile and 4-5 vs. Montgomery. They need only to win three in their final series at Birmingham and have Montgomery lose two of its remaining seven in-state games to clinch the very-unofficial title. Montgomery, going into Saturday's game against Mobile, was 22-20 against Alabama teams. Mobile was 22-26, with only two remaining, and Birmingham was 22-27, with 11 in-state games left. ... Luther Hackman, a journeyman right-hander with 149 big-league appearances, has joined the Stars. He was signed by the Brewers from the Bridgeport Bluefish of the independent Atlantic League. The 31-year-old pitched in the majors for Colorado, St. Louis and San Diego, going 9-10 with one save and a 5.09 ERA. He spent 2005 pitching in Korea. ... Should every Stars game be televised? They have seldom looked better than in Thursday's doubleheader at Mississippi that was broadcast by CSS. ... Callix Crabbe had six hits in seven at-bats and Ron Acuna his first homer of the season in that impressive sweep. ... Manager Don Money points out a key in the Stars' second half surge has been the appearance of the long-ball. "We don't have to sit around and hope for two or three or four hits in a row to have a big inning," he said. The Stars have 56 homers, tied with Mississippi for last in the league. ... The arrival of Ryan Braun, with seven homers, is more than coincidence to the homer surge. Since his June 21 debut, Huntsville has 29 homers in 44 games, compared to 27 homers in the first 72. Around the league Baseball America's annual "Best Tools" issue is out, and the Stars were skunked among "Best" in the Southern League, though Braun's stint in the Florida State League was long enough to have him tabbed best batting prospect. ... Chattanooga's Joey Votto was named best batting prospect and ex-Carolina Mudcat Anibel Sanchez best pitching prospect. ... One of Tampa Bay's top prospects is Evan Longoria - no relation to the actress Eva Longoria - and he's scorching for the Montgomery Biscuits now. The first-round draft pick out of Long Beach, is 7-for-14 since his promotion from Single-A ball. If Evan were to meet Eva, he once told si.com, "I would hope for extra bases. Definitely not a home run." ... Birmingham pulled off a triple play Monday against Tennessee, the first for a Barons team since Aug. 31, 1974. ... Triple Crown update on Votto: His chances are fading. The Lookouts' first baseman continues to lead the league with 21 homers and his .314 average is tops, though Tennessee's Danny Richard is at .313. And Jacksonville's Craig Brazell is running away in RBIs now, 81-69. Brewings Triple-A Nashville Sounds (63-57 before Saturday's play, first place in Pacific Coast League American Division): Four-game losing streak. A sixth-inning solo home run by third baseman Adam Heether was all the Manatees needed because for the third time in the last 14 games the Cubs failed to score a run. Brevard County's Milko Jaramillo added a two-run blast off reliever Paul Schappert to make it 3-0 in the ninth inning. It was the 15th time this season the two clubs have met in Florida State League play and that doesn't count the numerous exhibition games played against each other in spring training. "All these guys, we're playing against most of them all of the way up so we know each other pretty well," Heether said. "Tonight, we were just coming out like, 'We're gonna win tonight. No question about it.' " Heether's first home run this season in the Florida State League came on his 119th at-bat since he was transferred from the AA Huntsville Stars. The 2-2 fastball was near the middle of the plate and Heether took advantage. The Cubs (28-20) came into the game leading the FSL East by one game over the St. Lucie Mets. Brevard County (20-28), a farm team of the Milwaukee Brewers, trails Daytona by eight games. Cubs starter Mark Holliman (7-10) pitched well, going 6 1/3 innings. He allowed the home run and scattered five other hits while fanning five and walking a batter. "I made a big mistake when I got myself in a count that dictated a fastball," Holliman said. "He got a good swing on an OK pitch. It was one of those situations where he knew what was coming and I knew I had to throw it. He won the battle obviously." Cubs manager Buddy Bailey was more than pleased with Holliman's effort. "Holliman gave us a really nice outing," Bailey said. ""It was a shame we didn't score any runs for him. When you leave a ballgame when he did and give up one run, that's a tough night." Daytona had just five singles and no Cub had more than one hit. 22. Final: Delmarva (Orioles) 6, West Virginia 3 Second time this week a Brewer affiliate has watched their opponent walk-off with a five-run ninth inning... West Virginia Team Site Game Wrap: SHOREBIRDS SURPRISE POWER IN THE NINTH The West Virginia Power took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning of Saturday night?s game at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Maryland. The Shorebirds scored five times, and won the game on Stu Musslewhite?s walk off three run homer, beating the Power 6-3. The Power took an early 1-0 lead on Angel Salome?s Sacrifice Fly that scored Darren Ford in the top of the third inning. Michael Brantley provided the Sacrifice Fly to score Darren Ford in the fifth inning, putting the Power ahead by a pair. The Shorebirds cut the lead in half on Ryan Finan?s RBI double in the seventh. The Power added a run in the ninth inning on a two out RBI single from Lorenzo Cain. Down 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Juan Gutierrez tied the game with a two run double, and Stu Musslewhite ended the contest with a walk off three run homer. Power right hander Will Inman was fantastic once again. Inman surrendered a run on a hit with two walks and struck out a season high eleven batters through six and a third. Inman, who had gotten the victory in his last five starts, did not factor into the decision. Blake Owen (7-3) got the win, and Kevin Roberts (5-10) got the loss. The Power are 62-55 on the year and 23-25 in the second half after the loss while the Shorebirds improved to 53-61 overall and 17-30 in the second half after the win. The Power will finish the four game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Right hander Kyle Schmidt (2-2, 4.10) will make the start for Delmarva and the Power will counter with right hander Shawn Ferguson (1-1, 5.89). The first pitch is scheduled for 1:35 PM. West Virginia Box Score and Game Log Link: Kevin Roberts, who had seemingly found his role in late relief, with a control meltdown in the 9th, gives way to Patrick Ryan, who surrenders a three-run walkoff blast. You see this all the time -- a reliever who likely had no idea that he might be needed, is brought in and is immediately lit up by the first batter he faces. Otherwise, Will Inman's the story, allowing only one hit and two walks (11 K's) in 6 1/3 -- the run Inman allowed was only after he left the game with his man on first base and one out; Lorenzo Cain reaches base four times; Darren Ford a triple and a single in his return to the lineup after nursing a hamstring injury for a bit... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_delafx_1
  23. TBS showed Damian was being held. How is that Sveum's fault?
  24. Great veteran savvy on the basebaths -- way to take the bat out of Fielder's hands, Damian. Pathetic.
  25. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com/ STARS MOVE INTO 2nd PLACE!CHIPPER JONES FACES STARS FOR FIRST TIME SINCE '92Hang onto your hats and buckle up!. The Stars are serious....... Need proof? They've won 14 of their last 18 games after tonight's cliff-hanger win over the M'Braves........ As play-by-play announcer Brett Pollock declared before this road trip, the Stars will need to win seven of 10 games to mount a serious challenge in this 2nd half race......... Well, they're 6-2 on this trip with two to go and after a doubleheader sweep Thursday, they are three games over .500, and with the Lookouts' loss to red-hot Tennessee, the Stars climb into 2nd place in the North Division for the first time since May 3rd........ The good news and the bad........ The Stars must get in the back door to take a playoff spot. They're done with Tennessee this year; as a matter-of-fact, they were done with them back in May, one of several injustices you can find with the schedule this year...... The good news: the rest of the Stars' schedule is weak, compared to the first half when they had to play 1st and 2nd place teams almost regularly in the last 30 games. The Stars come home to play Carolina Tuesday, then slumping West Tennessee at Pringles Park, the M'Braves for the last home series, and finally the Barons at Hoover Met to close the season. A record crowd at Trustmark Park came out to see Chipper Jones start at 3rd base for the first of his two-game appearances......... Jones was placed on the 15-day disabled list by Atlanta on July 30 with a strained left oblique. Before his injury, he was the hottest man in the Braves? lineup, with a July batting average of .500 with seven doubles, one triple, seven HRs, 20 RBI, and 19 runs scored through only 16 games........ No Stars team had seen Chipper since August 28, 1992 when he went 1-for-4 in a 3-2 Huntsville loss at Greenville. Chipper hit just .227 with a HR in 22 ABs against the Stars that year, but he hit .346 for the G'Braves in their 100-win season on his way to the majors in 1993 and a possible Hall-of-Fame career. (He had a .303 career batting average coming into this season with 331 HRs.)....... Tonight, though, another future major league star, Yovani Gallardo, and Joe Valentine held him 0-for-4 at the plate. The Stars struck first after Steve Moss (3-for-10 in this series) led off the game with a single to center. Ryan Braun drove a one-out 1-1 Kyle Davies pitch high to deep right-center against the wall, for his first triple with the Stars....... The opportunity to score Braun slipped, however, as Brad Nelson flied out to Onil Joseph in center and Ron Acuna struck out........ Davies, like Chipper, is on a rehab assignment from Atlanta, recovering from a groin injury. He was expected to throw 60 pitches, followed by Anthony Lerew (4-2, 2.03), but Lerew was called up to Richmond before the game, and Pedro Ascenio came in to throw three scoreless innings for the M'Braves. It took Davies 56 pitches to get six outs. It looked like he would have an easy go of it in the 2nd inning, after retiring Drew Anderson and Lou Palmisano, but his third out was hard to come by........ Davies had Ozzie Chavez on the ropes 0-and-2, then walked him. Yovani then stepped up and chopped a 1-1 grounder up the middle to 2nd baseman Yuni Escobar. Escobar flipped the ball underhand to shorstop Luis Hernandez for the force, but Chavez slid in safely after Escobar's feed found its way underneath Hernandez's left arm......... Gallardo was given credit for a hit, but that was later changed to an error on Hernandez, the first of what would be three errors charged to him........ With the count 1-and-2 on the next hitter, Moss, Davies threw a slider that went right between the legs of catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia for a wild pitch. That moved Chavez to 3rd and Gallardo to 2nd. After being ahead, Davies then walked Moss, loading the bases......Moss was forced in on another error when Callix Crabbe, who went 6-for-7, driving in four runs in Thursday's double-header, hit a 2-2 pitch up the middle to Hernandez, who flipped to Escobar behind the bag at second, but Escobar couldn't handle the feed as he was trying to reach back with his bare hand........ Hernandez was charged with his 2nd error of the inning, but MiLB's web site gives the error to Escobar. But the result was the same. The Stars took a 2-0 lead. The Braves got a run back in the bottom of the inning....... Michael Rosamond drew a two-out walk and went to third on a line drive single by struggling Josh Burrus, who was just 2-for-27 against Stars pitching....... Luis Hernandez, the goat so far for Mississippi, then cracked a first-pitch fast ball over a leaping Gallardo into centerfield for an RBI single. Yovani held the 2-1 lead all the way to the 7th inning when they added the two most important runs in this game........ The Braves went to Ryan Basner (4-5, 4.31), who in four previous appearances this season against the Stars, allowed five runs in nine innings in relief......... Moss got things started with his 100th hit of the season, an 0-1 slider cracked back through the middle that kicked off Basner's back foot, anding on the infield grass behind him........ Callix Crabbe bunted him over to 2nd base, his 15th sacrifice bunt of the season. Crabbe now has 35 to add to his record career total....... Ryan Braun chopped Basner's first pitch, a slider, to short, where Luis Hernandez seemed indecisive over what to do with the ball. Hernandez looked at third, thought about it, then overthrew to Chipper Jones and was charged with an error, allowing Moss to score to make it 3-1....... Brad Nelson, the next hitter, bounced a 2-2 grounder through the hole on the left side. Braun, going on the pitch, made it to third easily........ After hitting .167 in July, Nelson is .273 on this road trip........ Ron Acuna then put the Stars ahead, 4-1, on a fielder's choice grounder to 2nd that forced out Nelson. Gallardo was done after allowing a leadoff walk on four pitches to Mike Rozema, and going 2-0 on the next hitter Onil Joseph, who reached on a fielder's choice....... Joe Valentine, the Stars' closer-designate, came on for the two-inning save, but even with a little or a lot of wiggle room, Valentine's save opportunities have been messy........ On July 25 vs. Birmingham, with a 3-1 lead in his hands, he put runners on the corners before Pedro Lopez singled in a run, then in the 9th, loaded the bases with nobody out before retiring the next three hitters on two fly balls and a strikeout. That was his 1st save........ He blew an 8-3 lead in the 9th for the Stars on August 2 vs. the Lookouts, retiring only one hitter before the Stars came back to win in the bottom of the inning for a 9-8 victory in what so far in my opinion has been the Game of the Year. Just the night before, he pirated a win from Tim Dillard who had a 8-6 lead going into the top of the 9th. A walk and a home run tied the game before the Stars came back in the bottom half to win it. Valentine retired Yuni Escobar for the first out, but the fly ball moved Mike Rozema to reach third........ Rozema had nearly been forced out at second by Joseph's grounder, but Ozzie's feed popped out of Crabbe's glove for an error. Rozema scored on Valentine's wild pitch, making the score 4-2....... It was just the third error on this road trip....... Onil Joseph got as far as third on Chipper Jones' ground ball, but he was stranded there after Brandon Jones grounded out.. It was hold your breath time in the 9th as Jarrod Saltalamacchia doubled to the alley in right-center to lead off the bottom half....... Valentine struck out Mike Rosamond, but Josh Burrus lined a single to right, scoring Saltalamacchia and bringing the Braves to within a run........ Josh Arteaga walked on five pitches to put Arteaga on second with the tying run, but Rozema ended the game by sending a sharp liner right to Brad Nelson on first, who doubled up Arteaga to end the game. In Valentine's five saves, he's allowed one run while giving up seven hits, walking four. That's living dangerously. In the seven other games Valentine has come in to pitch, he's given up nine runs in 10 1/3 innings. The Stars will be looking for their 6th straight victory Saturday and Tim Dillard (8-7, 3.38) will get the ball. Dillard, who is just two hits away from tying a club record by pitchers for most hits in a season, is in an 0-for-9 funk. The Stars are currently 5th among Southern League team leaders in ERA (3.49). Dillard's 2nd out of tonight's game will give the staff 1,000 innings pitched, making them the last team to reach that milestone this year. The Stars have boosted their team average to .242, still 9th in the ten-team league....... Matt Harrison (3-2, 3.42) is scheduled to start for the Braves. With rosters now expanding, the Stars filled a hole in their bullpen by acquiring former Southern League pitcher Luther Hackman........ Hackman was 4-3 in 10 starts and one relief appearance for the Carolina Mudcats in 1999. The 31-year old right-hander is now the oldest man on the Stars' roster, bumping Travis Phelps........ His last look at affiliated ball was with the Nashville Sounds in 2004, when they were hooked up with the Pirates. This season, though, he was an impressive 8-0 with a 2.81 ERA for the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League....... Hackman was in uniform for Friday night's game. Brett Evert, who was released by the Stars on July 15, was picked up by the Boston Red Sox and assigned to Pawtucket. He has since dropped down to Class AA-Portland (Eastern). Thursday, Evert pitched an inning against Harrisburg in the Sea Dogs' blowout 13-4 win. Butler, Alabama native Johnny Ruffin, resigned as pitching coach for the Chillicothe Paints of the Frontier League after he was arrested in June for failing to register as a sex offender, according to the Chillicothe Gazette....... Ruffin, a 4th round pick by the White Sox in 1988, pitched for the Birmingham Barons in 1992 and 1993 before making it to the majors with the Cincinnati Reds in 1993........ Ruffin was 0-7 for the '92 Barons, losing to the Stars 3-1 in a May 2 game that saw only four hits between both teams, and 3-0 on May 17. The next season, he was 0-4 for Birmingham, losing to the Stars, 2-1, on April 24. On July 31, the Sox traded Ruffin to the Reds with pitcher Jeff Pierce for Tim Belcher -- yes, that Tim Belcher. Former Mobile Bay Bear Nick Trzesniak was traded to the Texas Rangers, August 6, and assigned to Oklahoma..... Mobile, meanwhile, has picked up former Birmingham Barons pitcher Jim Bullard. Bullard started the season with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the Blue Jays' AA farm club. Bullard pitched for the Barons from 2002-2005. Baseball America released their annual "Best Tools" survey. No Huntsville Star received any notice this year, but Ryan Braun was named as best batting prospect from the Florida State League........ Former Stars 2nd baseman, now Mobile manager Gary Jones was named as the Southern League's best managerial prospect........ Nelson Cruz, who has since been traded to the Texas Rangers, was named the PCL's best power prospect......... West Virginia Power pitcher Will Inman was named best pitching prospect in the Sally League....... Alcides Escobar was named best defensive shortstop in the Florida State League.
