Standings through Friday's action: Things looking dicey for the punchless Sounds; it's a shame the Stars don't play Tennessee again -- they'll need some help, but we like their chances with that rotation; the Manatees missed their chance in the first-half with an inexplicable at-the-time two-week slide -- a total non-factor in the second half; wonderful individual performances for Power players all season -- somehow never translated to consistent winning on the field, odd and disappointing; it's not hard to make the playoffs in the Pioneer League (half the teams do) -- Billings won the first-half title, so Helena only needs to beat out Missoula and a weak Great Falls team to make the post-season; hopefully the Maryvale kids that will move on in the system learned some things along the way this summer... Thanks, minigoon! Nice find, and nice job resurrecting this thread, we obviously don't see as many features on the Marryvale kids. Link while active, text follows: www.helenair.com/articles...206_01.txt Grand slam lifts Brewers past Osprey By TOM COTTON - Independent Record Sports Editor Chris Errecart says he is feeling confident when he steps up to the plate. Friday night?s game against Missoula should do little to dampen his enthusiasm. The University of California product swatted a grand slam in the sixth inning and drove in five runs, helping the Helena Brewers to a 10-5 win over the Osprey. Errecart was 2-for-4 at the plate and is developing into one of the most dangerous offensive players in the Pioneer League. He has eight home runs to his credit this season and has raised his batting average to .321 after hitting under .200 to start the season. ?It wasn?t so much a struggle with the wood bats, it was just me getting ahead of myself,? he said. ?As the season moved along I was getting the hits I wasn?t getting before.? Errecart?s slam highlighted a seven-run sixth inning which turned a close ball game into a rout. He drove a pitch by Missoula?s Brett Reynolds over the left field wall much to the delight of the 973 fans at Kindrick Legion Field. ?It was a 1-1 count and the first pitch I was sitting on a slider,? Errecart said. ?The pitch was up. I thought it was a ball, but it was called a strike. After that I decided just to react. It was a fastball and I hit it well.? The sixth inning was made even more miserable for Missoula thanks to a complete meltdown by their battery. Jason Neighborgall started the inning for the Brewers and he unleashed four wild pitches in a two-batter span. Missoula catcher Gerardo Bustamante had two passed balls in the frame. When the damage was done a 4-3 Missoula lead became a 10-4 blowout in favor of Helena. The Brewers punished the Osprey batters with three home runs in the contest. Zach Clem and Chuckie Caufield each had solo home runs in the second and third innings, respectively. Helena?s pitching was generally solid throughout the contest with Roque Mercedes picking up the win with five innings of good relief work. He struck out three batters and gave up two earned runs over that span. Helena is now lurking one-game behind first-place Billings in the Pioneer League?s North Division. They have won three of their last four games. ?I always thought when I got here that this team has a lot of good players and when the team gelled, it would fall into a groove,? Errecart said. The Brewers now will play two games on the road, heading to Great Falls. Both contests will start at 7:00 PM (8:00 Central). -

That Brevard bunch has been in a really sorry funk for nearly a couple of months now. Someone with more knowledge of the FSL can verify this, but most of the Brevard road games don't involve hotel stays, I believe, but back and forth daily bus trips, similar to all those High Desert Cal League Southern Division games. It sure would be sweet to see the Brewers hook up with a Carolina League affiliate next season -- but the way the organization treats the high-A level in terms of philosophy, buyer beware. -

Damian Miller turned his mitt and under-caught that last pitch to Jones. If he had just plain caught it, they probably get the call. Not a good job of framing on that pitch. -

Would any of us have complained if Kolb or Capellan or Helling were brought in to start the 9th and lost the game? No, we wouldn't have questioned it. But Turnbow was an obviously questionable, hideous move. Ned and Maddux's manlove for the guy has literally ruined our Brewer summer. -

We learn more from Huntsville's site: Veteran Arm Added to Stars' Staff The Milwaukee Brewers have signed veteran right-hand pitcher Luther Hackman and assigned him to the Huntsville Stars. He is expected to be in uniform when the Stars and Mississippi Braves play the third game of their five-game set on Friday night at Trustmark Park. Hackman had been pitching for the Bridgeport Bluefish in the independent Atlantic Leauge, where he was 8-0 with eight saves and a 2.81 earned run average over 73.2 innings of work. He started the season in the bullpen and was moved into the rotation, lasting at least five innings in each of his nine starts. The 31-year-old was selected by Colorado in the sixth round of the draft in 1994 and he made his major league debut with the Rockies in 1999, making three starts and appearing twice in relief. Hackman made 10 starts and one outing in relief for the Carolina Mudcats in the Southern League earlier that season, going 4-3 with a 4.04 ERA. He pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2000, 2001 and 2002 and for the San Diego Padres during the 2003 season. Hackman owns a career big league mark of 9-10 with one save and a 5.09 ERA in 149 outings, including nine starts.
