Milwaukee Brewers signed free agent RHP Deivy Gonzalez to a minor league contract. Milwaukee Brewers signed free agent LHP Noel Cepeda to a minor league contract. The Temporarily Inactive List is "a designated status for players who are unavailable to render active service due to excused personal obligations, family emergencies, or brief absences" (per MiLB). A player must spend a minimum of 3 days on the list. We hope all is well with Leonard, but we often don't learn the circumstances around TIL absences, which is fair. Guilarte had last played on April 24th. The bit of info we have on the young pitchers can be found here. These teenagers are just a tad bit older than the norm signed back as part of the January 2026 international class. So, they had made strides since that time, caught the Brewers eye, and Milwaukee determined there was room in the organization to slot them in. FYI - the Phillies had recently traded some of their Dominican Summer League talent, deciding to pare back from two DSL teams to one. The Brewers clearly aren't anywhere near that type of decision. Speaking of the DSL, the season opens Monday morning. On Saturday, the Brewers formally finalized their two rosters, with all the new additions since January 2026 to the present assigned, and other players repeating the league, but migrating between the "Blue" and "Gold" rosters noted. Reaching base 33 times via BB/HBP vs. just 31 K's, why yes again, thank you. We all agree that MLB and AAA pitching staffs are two very different animals, but there are certain skills that translate easier than others, and Pratt's skillset should migrate nicely. It won't dazzle, but much will carry over to the highest level. If you think Pratt's plate discipline and avoidance of the dreaded strikeout is something, then remind yourself that Luis Lara has now received 40 free BB/HBP passes and has fanned only 31 times. The fellow 21-year-old is three months younger than Pratt, and it has to be a near-lock that no other organization has two 21-year-old's performing as well at the AAA level. It's getting easier to picture 32-year-old veteran LHP Thomas Pannone (50 MLB games, including 13 starts) being inserted into the Brewers rotation at some point this season to help navigate upcoming long stretches without days off. Of course, his out-of-options status complicates things, but should rotation thinning continue via injury / ineffectiveness, keep this in mind. I've been adamant that the Brewers will go the "ride-or-die to the end" route with William Contreras, just as they did with Willy Adames. It'd be impossible to replace via trade (one year's service time) what Contreras brings to the team. I'm not one for shooting down others' conversation topics, but whether it's national media or your buddy at the gym, please quickly dismiss their trade thoughts on Contreras this winter and set them straight, regardless of what Jeferson Quero is accomplishing. Three games and counting since we last saw Brock Wilken. Did you notice the four former members of the Brewers organization who saw action for Gwinnett Saturday? The thing about Saturday absences is that they often morph into Sunday sit-outs as well, in order to take advantage of Monday's rest day. Just as was the case in Nashville's game, everyone in the lineup reached base at least once. We mentioned age 21 as a key in the Sounds' write-up above. Let's remember that RHP Bishop Letson will also be just 21 years old for the entirety of this season. Making his first appearance in two weeks, if Letson's break was a fine-tuning reset, it was successful for the most part, no earned runs over five-and-a-third innings. Of his six baserunners allowed, four were via the walk. Even so, consider this a good step. Heck, Brandon Sproat is 25 years old. Is it possible to picture Letson even further along than Sproat in four years' time? Sure, though hopefully that timeline can be quickened a bit. My point is patience with Letson is needed. As for Game Two (nice Trey Supak reference in the summary, by the way), keep in mind this was Mike Boeve's 11th appearance at first base (9th start) this season. If his glove even tips this a tiny bit as it scoots into right field, we're talking a no-hitter: So, how's that 2024 3rd round bonus money spent on DeBerry look now (just $25,000 as a senior sign out of Dallas Baptist, allowing for bonus pool manipulation with the other picks). Completely disregard the current 4.84 ERA, the Brewers know what they have in DeBerry. Will it get to the point that the team petitions MLB to lower-case Jaron's "D" as in "deGrom"? Oh, that would be sweet. 22-year-old Dylan O'Rae singled and walked twice. You may win a pub bet by asking who has the higher OPS as of this morning, O'Rae or Jesús Made? Successful once and not successful once, O'Rae is 29-for-35 in SB attempts. It's been a minute since we checked on Jose Anderson's strikeout percentage, it's "down" to 41.9%. Two untimely errors resulted in 3 unearned runs allowed, as the Zona Crew (10-12) dropped their 9-inning, 11:00 AM home contest to the ACL Reds 6-4, despite outhitting them 6-3. OF Brailyn Antunez (1-for-3, walk) was back in the starting lineup after exiting Thursday’s game early and the game started well with rehabbing RHP Daniel Corniel's 1-2-3 first inning and DH Luke Adams’ homer (his 3rd in four games; 2-for-4, HR, walk, 2 RBIs, SB today) to lead off the bottom of the 1st inning. However, a two-out dropped fly ball to left field allowed two runs against Corniel (2 IP, 2 R (0 ER), 2 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks), then 4 walks, 1 HBP and 1 balk issued by 19-year old RHP Dariel Jaquez (2 1/3 IP, 2 R, 1 H, 2 Ks) helped push the deficit to 4-1. Down 6-1 late, the first three Brewers reached in a two-run eighth inning (2 walks, Adams’ RBI single), then C Freider Rojas (1-for-3, walk) delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 9th inning to cut the deficit to 6-4. Adams followed with a seven-pitch walk, but 18-year-old 3B Yu-Lin Liao (0-for-3 today; 2-for-25 in his short career to date) flew out to end it. The game had a funny way of finding Liao, who entered as a substitute for rehabbing SS Daniel Guilarte (K, BB in his first game since April 24), as he committed a run-scoring error in the 8th inning and also struck out for the team’s first out in the bottom half of that frame. RHPs Jhosep Ospino (1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K) and Argenis Aparicio (1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks) were solid in relief to give the comeback a chance, while RHP Josue Toledo struggled a bit with control (1 1/3 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 0 H, 3 BB, 2 Ks). 2B CJ Hughes had a productive game (1-for-3, walk, 2 SBs) and Rojas gunned down 2 of 3 attempted basestealers. For those exasperated with the Luis Rengifo experience, we check in on Jett Williams, batting 5th in the lineup and only getting three at-bats in this home game win. It was this 91 MPH line single into center, nicely done, that scored the final (and deciding) run of the game. In the nearly complete month of May, Williams has posted a .253/.383/.425 line (.808 OPS), though the 22-year-old has only one multi-hit game in his last ten, and the knock you just watched was his first base hit in four games. In other words, not exactly banging the door down to immediately provide Brewers fans with much-needed Rengifo relief. Brock Wilken was idle for a second consecutive game - he's slugging .254 in May; that's not a misprint. Along with Robert Gasser (much mentioned in the game summary and seen here) and Koenig, it was a continued southpaw brigade with Drew Rom and Brian Fitzpatrick. Would love to see Fitzpatrick focus on multi-inning work, as that seems to be the priority working so well in the big-league bullpen. That value still has me thinking that Rob Zastryzny (idle in this one) doesn't have a true fit in Milwaukee and will be biding time as two weeks remain on his 30-day rehab stint capped length. As for the two runs Gasser allowed, it was hardly a barrage. On this play, you'll see how left fielder Eddys Leonard's error set up Gasser's second run to be unearned, and here you'll see a broken bat flair brought in that unearned run. So, a solid night for Bob Gas overall. Old friend Brewer Hicklen was 0-for-4, with two K's, but YTD he's at .335/.410/.542, impressive four-A player he is. Plenty of offense-minded content in that game summary, but perhaps this is the most important takeaway: "Shuckers starter Brett Wichrowski (6.0 IP, 5 K) worked into the sixth inning for the third straight start and has punched out 19 batters over those three appearances." Wichrowski's still in just his age 23 season, and we should remember his professional experience below the AA level consists of only his first four starts, kicking off the 2024 season with the Timber Rattlers. Count me among those who feel the righthander's development trajectory may have been different if he had been allowed to simmer longer in Appleton that summer. Regardless, nice to see recent results, though he did walk four here (walks have not been an issue season-to-date). Right-fielder Damon Keith and his .925 OPS last played on Saturday the 23rd. Circumstances for Darrien Miller - this could only happen because there were two outs: In some skillset ways, Mike Boeve is set to become the new Tyler Black, minus Black's 40-man roster status. LH bat, LF/1B/3B but no set home, and given Black's out-of-options situation for 2027, we'll be viewing Boeve in Black terms next spring. Those May numbers, by the way - .299/.353/.455. Boeve's first RBI in this game was hardly scorched but did the job (video). Speaking of doing the job, if you're a sacrifice fly fan, watch Matthew Wood's fly to center and Eduardo Garcia's fly to right. Three Shuckers were plunked in this game, all lived to talk about it. A player who did exit early, however, was first baseman Blake Burke. Burke led off the 5th with a double, pulling a sharp line drive to right. Take another look at that Boeve RBI video above, Burke was hit by the thrown ball as he slid across home plate. He popped right up, trotting to the dugout, but he did not re-enter on defense in the bottom half of the inning. Glad you're feeling better, Jesus Made (no more illness)! Hitless Friday, but contributing, as your box score review indicated. Deserved shoutout to Great Britain WBC RHP Jack Seppings - stranded an Ethan Dorchies runner to end the 6th and took it the rest of the way (zero walks). The one earned run against him was weak, as catcher David Garcia mishandled Eric Bitonti's (admittedly low) throw at the plate in the 10th. Sometimes a Link Reporter is getting towards the back end of his daily duties hoping to coast into the home stretch with a couple of low-scoring contests and then realizes that the Wilson and Maryvale games produced a combined 36 runs. Sigh.... Thought the Pelicans might have posted that nerve-wracking final out, Pedro Ibarguen's six-pitch at-bat ending in a strikeout, but no. Handelfry Encarnacion's two-out, two-run triple in the 4th was a bit of a gift to his season stats, as the outfielder obliged: Kevin Garcia's two-run double in the 7th also came with two outs: We see you, Tyler Rodriguez, on base all five times up and three successful stolen base attempts. Rodriguez, playing left field, singled twice and walked thrice. Brady Ebel walked twice and was also hit by a pitch. Ebel is inching his walk total (37) closer to his K total (41), while remaining a perfect 19-for-19 on the basepaths. Rylan Mills (designated hitter) also reached three times without a knock, three bases on balls. Those were among the 12 walks earned by Wilson. Encarnacion has played 35 games in right field, six in center, and his 5th error of the season and first in center did occur Friday. Starting pitcher Miqueas Mercedes danced around baserunners to allow one run in his two-inning injured list return after a month away. RHP Jarrette Bonet's game log for May will reveal a tough month outside of his stellar bulk relief outing last time out. As you might imagine, all told, there are 13 MiLB video clips archived, five at the Warbirds site and eight at the Pelicans' locale. Nearly 4,800 on hand at the beach, impressive. Final: ACL Brewers 8, ACL Mariners 7, seven innings as scheduled Box Score and Game Log From earlier this week, thanks to my fellow Link Reporter "Ro" for bringing this to our attention, it's an excellent read, actually a must-read for diehards: Concern about quality of ACL/FCL play and impact on young player development: What a 29-2 score says about the state of low-level minor-league baseball — and why MLB fans should care As for this shortened game, first this: Center fielder Brailyn Antunez missed his first game of the season (infielder Cristopher Acosta is now the lone Maryvale everyday iron man). As Ro wrote in the Link Report for Thursday's games: Hopefully the victory did not come at a cost, as DH/OF Brailyn Antunez exited one inning after being hit-by-pitch. The A-Crew knocked out four home runs, perhaps the one most of note being rehabbing Luke Adams' 2nd Arizona League blast in his three desert games. 19-year-old RF Engel Paulino remained hot, with two solo home runs Friday, now 5-for-his-last-13 with another home run within that span. CF Kenny Fenelon had the other long ball, his 4th. Maryvale scored five in the 5th to overcome a 4-1 deficit and maintained the tight lead the rest of the way, with additional runs scored by each club. Two Brewers errors in the final inning added to the drama. Nashville fans following rehabbing RHP Gerson Garabito's progress (broken bone in his foot) will see a scoreless 4th (a two-out double), in his 3rd scoreless Arizona outing. Soon-to-be 19-year-old RH starter Hayden Vucinovich struck out seven in three innings of work but only walked two. He's now at 14 BB and 15 K in 9.2 innings (that's lots of pitches!). This is one of those games where you review the play-by-play game log, pretend you're there, are actually entertained depending on your virtual imagination level. Six games on tap for Saturday with the Biloxi road twinbill, they get underway at 4:05 Central. Everyone else is under the lights, with the exception of the usual Maryvale Saturday 1:00 Central matinee. Enjoy your day, all! In Wednesday's game, Polanco, playing third base, caught a foul pop for the 2nd out of the 5th inning, remaining in the game to complete the inning on defense. He was replaced in the field to start the 6th. May or may not be related to that catch. His 34 plate appearances in 2026 have been stellar in the small sample, as his linked page shows.

Big changes for Warbirds’ Mills since graduating high school a year ago A year after planning to play college ball at Southeast Missouri State, former Oran High star Rylan Mills jumped from Arizona rookie ball to Single-A Wilson and adjusting to life on his own By Paul Durham, Wilson Times Last year about this time Rylan Mills was a high school senior in Dexter, Missouri, preparing for his upcoming graduation from nearby Oran High. Mills was planning to play summer collegiate baseball in preparation for a career at NCAA Division I Southeast Missouri State University, also nearby. But all those plans changed when the Milwaukee Brewers made Mills an 18th-round pick in last summer’s MLB First-Year Player Draft. A year later, Mills sat in Wilson Warbirds manager Eddy Morgan’s office at Wilson Ballpark following the team’s Single-A Carolina League doubleheader Sunday, May 24, marveling at the pace his life has taken over the past 12 months. “It’s pretty crazy, it really is just to look how far I’ve came in a year, and how far the other high school guys have came in a year,” he said. “It’s pretty special to be in this place. Yeah, it’s exciting to see how much things can change in the future, and it just makes me look forward more to the future.” Mills, who helped Oran win the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 1 championship in 2024, said that the uncertainty of the draft made college seem more attractive. “No, I was not 100% on being drafted,” he said. “I didn’t know what that held. So, I was going to school at Southeast Missouri State University, that’s a Division I, just right by the hometown. So, yeah, I wasn’t sure about being drafted, so I went and played summer ball in a collegiate league to try to prepare for college, just because I wasn’t sure what the future held. So I was getting ready to go play at SEMO, and then when the draft came around, I got the call from the scout and then I didn’t really have to think about it much.” Mills signed with the Brewers last summer as the No. 545 overall pick but didn’t play Rookie League until this spring when he was assigned to the Arizona Complex League. He made the adjustment from high school pitching to pro arms fairly quickly. In just six games in the ACL, which started its season May 2, Mills was hitting .350 (7 for 20) with seven RBIs, two home runs and a .458 on-base percentage. That was enough for the Brewers to pluck Mills from Rookie League and buy him a plane ticket to North Carolina. When he got the word from ACL Brewers manager Rafael Neda, Mills was excited, to be sure. “Yeah, I was fired up!” he said. “I really wasn’t sure how this year was going to look, where I was going to be, but I was trying to just be where my feet were and play to the best of my abilities, wherever I was. Then our manager there called me over after a game and told me, and I was kind of speechless, like I was shocked, didn’t really know what to say, so I just thanked him, and he told me I had a flight in the morning, so I went back and packed up my stuff, and then here I am.” Mills was called up to replace catcher Eric Martinez after he was promoted to the Triple-A Nashville Sounds on May 15. Mills, who joined the Warbirds in the middle of a 12-game homestand, hit a home run in his first game in Wilson on May 17. He added RBI doubles in two games before wearing the collar (0 for 4) in Wilson’s 6-2 loss at Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Tuesday evening. Heading into Friday’s game at Pelicans Stadium, Mills is batting .211 (4 for 19) in five games with Wilson, with a homer, two doubles and six RBIs. His on-base percentage has dipped to .250 as he adjusts to Single-A pitching. Mills said it’s just a matter of finding ways to succeed at each level. “Yeah, it’s been tough,” he said of his progression from high school to pro baseball. “It really has, just because each level has its different things. It’s like it’s the same game, but it’s different every time you go up higher. So, even like now, I’m just trying to get adjusted to the differences in the game. It’s easy for the game to speed up, just trying to figure out the way to slow it down. “It was the same thing in high school — just trying to figure it out — and then I got drafted and was in the ACL. Same thing, just trying to figure out how to slow the game down and just like roll with the punches and just create rhythm, stuff like that. Now I’m here trying to try to do the same thing.” So far, Mills has impressed his new manager with his moxie and his defensive prowess. “He’s fearless,” Morgan said of his 19-year-old catcher. “You could tell that from the get-go that he wasn’t going to be overmatched at the plate, that he was going to go in there and get his A swing off. And then defensively, he’s a rock star, and only going to get better. So, we’re excited to have him. Once he gets more games underneath his belt, and I’ll tell you this right here, once he gets rhythm, he’s going to be a force at the plate.” Mills didn’t stay long in Arizona, which was fine with him, considering the landscape was a bit alien to the Missouri native. But he’s already found Wilson to be to his liking. “The town, I like the town, it reminds me of Missouri,” he said. “It does, because I was in Arizona for so long, and that couldn’t be any farther from Missouri. So, when I got off the plane out here, I actually sent my mom a picture of trees and grass, and I said, ‘Look, Mom, there’s green here.’ “I just thought that was hilarious, because in Arizona, there’s not really any green. So, being here, I like the town, like I said, reminds me of home, and that’s pretty cool.” He really likes Wilson Ballpark, the newly constructed downtown stadium that brought the Carolina Mudcats to town to become the Warbirds. “The park is really nice,” he said. “I didn’t get to experience the Mudcats facility, but I’ve been told this is quite a bit nicer, just the facilities and the field and everything. It’s cool to be able to play here in the first year of it being opened. The facilities are amazing, feels awesome.” Mills is navigating life on his own, like many people his age, for the first time. “So it was definitely an adjustment moving hours away from home in a matter of four days — not a whole lot of time to prepare for that — but it’s been fun,” he said of moving to to Arizona and then North Carolina. “Obviously, we have roommates here and stuff — and the same way in Arizona — just getting to experience living on your own and kind of going through that with some other guys. “When I first got to Arizona, one of the other high school catchers that they drafted, I was rooming with him, so we were both kind of like figuring things out on our own, like how to live on your own, getting out of the house, really, for the first time.” In Wilson, Mills is rooming with pitcher Jayden Dubanewicz, another recent arrival who did play for the Mudcats at the end of last summer. All the Warbirds players are living at Centro at Pine Nash Apartments just a few blocks from the ballpark. “I’m with Dubanewicz, which it’s fun being with him, kind of a little bit older guy that’s been through it,” Mills said. “So he’s helping me out a little bit with the stuff that needs help. It’s good, though.
