  2. Final: Helena 10, Ogden (Dodgers) 3 Helena Independent Record: Link while active, text follows -- www.helenair.com/articles...006_03.txt Brewers batter Raptors By KEVIN SHIVELY - IR Sports Writer The Helena Brewers got hot at the plate Wednesday night, recovering from Tuesday?s loss to win 10-3 over the Ogden Raptors. The win closes out the series with the Brewers picking up two of the three games. ?The guys have a plan and we just encourage them to stick to it,? said Helena hitting coach Johnny Narron. ?Our hitting instructor Jim Skaalen is in town this week so that always helps pump the guys up.? The Brewers had 12 hits in the game, including a pair of home runs from first baseman Chris Errecart. ?Errecart put two balls out of sight,? said Narron. ?He had two really key hits.? The slugger had his first homer in the fifth, with Cole Gillespie on first and no outs. J.R. Hopf followed with a walk, and Jordan Swaydan drove him in with a pop fly. Hopf?s run made the score 8-0. Errecart sent another pitch out of the park in the sixth, scoring Taylor Green and bringing the score to 10-1. The four RBI sent Errecart past Stephen Chapman in that category, making him the team leader with 23. Chapman had two in the game, bringing him to 22. Both hitters were 2-for-4 in the game. ?Chapman really continues to be solid,? said Narron. ?He?s matured a lot as a hitter.? Chapman started the scoring for the Brewers in the third inning, driving Brad Miller around with a triple. Helena scored four more runs in the fourth on a series of singles and a throwing error. The inning finally ended when Miller was caught at the plate on a double steal. Along with Errecart and Chapman, Miller, Gillespie and Chucky Caufield each had a pair of hits. Ogden?s Rick Taloa scored in the sixth on a solo home run. Taloa has been a powerhouse against the Brewers, hitting two out of the park Tuesday night as well. In the eighth, Matt Berezay homered for the Raptors and Jeremy Brown crossed the plate on a single to center from Parker Brooks. Helena rounded up two outs in the ninth and pitcher Brian Logan ended the contest by striking out Jesus Soto. Brandon Parillo (2-2, 3.12) picked up the win for the Brewers, pitching five innings of three-hit ball. Parillo struck out four and walked only two. Steve Palazzolo came in for two innings, allowing three hits of his own and Logan rounded out the final two innings. Charles Dasni (2-3) was awarded the loss for the Raptors, pitching four innings and giving up five runs, three of which were earned. The Brewers now face a four-game homestand against the Orem Owls. Helena will turn to Chris Jean (2-0, 5.09) and Orem will throw David Herndon (1-2, 3.66). The first pitch will be thrown at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central). 4. Final: Dunedin (Blue Jays) 5, Brevard County 1 Brevard County Site Game Summary: Blue Jays drop Manatees Eric Fowler tossed seven strong innings and Eric Arnold homered as Dunedin topped host Brevard County, 5-1, on Wednesday. Fowler (7-8) gave up one run on nine hits and did not walk a batter. It was the fourth time this season the 23-year-old left-hander has lasted at least seven innings and the third time he's allowed just one run. Connor Falkenbach recorded the final six outs for the Blue Jays (14-13), who snapped a three-game losing streak. Eric Arnold, who went 2-for-4, led off the fourth inning with a homer to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead, and Christian Snavely added a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Aaron Mathews hit an RBI double and Carlo Cota smacked a run-scoring single in the seventh for Dunedin. Aaron Mathews, Josh Kreuzer and David Corrente each contributed two of Dunedin's 10 hits. Brevard County starter Luis Pena (2-4) took the loss, surrendering two runs on six hits while striking out three. Ryan Crew's RBI single in the fourth drew the Manatees within a run. Charlie Fermaint and Carlos Corporan each had two hits for Brevard County (10-15). -- Louice Thomas/MLB.com Brevard County Box Score and Game Log Link: C.J. 5. Final: Carolina (Marlins) 5, Huntsville 4 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...newsId=929 Bear Delivers Decisive Blow in Mudcats Win Ryan Bear singled home the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Carolina to a second straight 5-4 come-from-behind win over Huntsville Wednesday night in the second game of a five-game set at Five County Stadium in Zebulon. The Mudcats improved to 11-16 in the second half and sent the Stars to their fifth straight loss and to a mark of 10-17 in the second half. Khalid Ballouli entered the game in the bottom of the ninth to protect a one-run lead for Huntsville and promptly walked lead off man J.C. Muniz. Patrick Arlis popped up a bunt attempt that Ballouli tried to make a sliding catch and could not, as the ball landed in between he and catcher Lou Palmisano for an infield single that moved Muniz to second base. Rex Rundgren advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Frank Moore was intentionally passed to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Kevin Randel flied out to shallow left field for the second out before Lee Mitchell was hit on an 0-1 pitch to force in Muniz with the tying run. Bear then sliced a line drive single into right field on a 1-0 offering to deliver Arlis with the decisive run and send the Stars to their 14th loss in 19 games decided by one run. Trailing 3-2 entering the ninth, the Stars tied the game on a double by Palmisano that scored Brad Nelson and moved Jeff Eure to third base. Callix Crabbe was intentionally passed to load the bases and pinch-hitter J.C. Boscan flied out to right field to plate Eure with the go-ahead run. It was the Stars? third pinch-hit RBI of the series, matching their total for the entire season leading up to the last two games. Kevin Cave replaced Matt Yourkin and walked Ron Acuna to re-load the bases before Steve Moss flied out to end the inning. Eure?s two-run home run in the fourth, his team-leading ninth of the year, gave the visitors a 2-0 lead that lasted only until the bottom of the frame when Muniz doubled in a pair to get the game tied. Brett Carroll led off the home sixth with a triple and scored one out later on a wild pitch by starter Jorge De La Rosa, who was charged with three runs on nine hits over six innings. Carolina starter James Russ allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings. The series continues Thursday night with Stars? right-hander Yovani Gallardo taking the hill against Mudcats? right-hander Trevor Hutchinson. Coverage of the game begins at 6:00 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. 6. Sheets sharp in rehab outing against Omaha Royals BY ROB WHITE OMAHA WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER Omaha manager Mike Jirschele summed up the performance of rehabbing major leaguer Ben Sheets pretty quickly. "We didn't hit too many balls hard," Jirschele said. Sheets allowed one run on three hits in 6 1/3 innings before leaving a bit ahead of schedule because a blister was beginning to form on his right middle finger on Wednesday night. Nashville picked up a 3-1 victory before about 1,000 (2,031 paid) at Rosenblatt Stadium, where the game-time heat index was 107 degrees. "I thought he threw the ball well," Jirschele said. "I don't think he was as sharp as when he's in the big leagues, but when he had to make pitches he did." Sheets, who will make $9.6 million this season, has been out since May with tendinitis in his right shoulder. Wednesday was his third rehabilitation outing. He and the Milwaukee Brewers are hopeful that his next start will be in the majors. "He's ready," said Nashville catcher Chad Moeller, who spent most of this season as the Brewers' backup catcher. "His stuff is there. His command isn't as sharp as he wants it to be, but it's still pretty darn good. He can go up there and be just fine." Sheets was on a 100-pitch limit, but threw just 87 - 54 of them strikes. Nashville manager Frank Kremblas said Sheets' fastball topped out at 96 mph. "His command was a little shaky the first couple of innings," Kremblas said. "But his velocity was up, which was good, and he threw some sharp breaking balls." The run scored by the Royals could have been avoided, but the Sounds were unable to turn an inning-ending double play in the second. Sheets, the hero of the 2000 Olympic team who also struck out 18 Atlanta Braves in a 2004 game, said he didn't view the near-blister as discouraging. He pitched around singles by veterans Chad Allen and Kerry Robinson in the first inning, getting strikeouts against both Shane Costa and Mike Coolbaugh. Costa struck out three times - twice against Sheets - and had his 16-game hitting streak come to an end. Sheets appeared to escape the second inning when Andres Blanco hit a ground ball, but shortstop Jermaine Clark dropped the throw to second and had to pick it up and step on the bag. Only one out was recorded as a run scored. Omaha didn't get a hit against Sheets after the second inning. He retired eight in a row before walking Blanco with one out in the fifth, then got the next five before leaving. He used 38 pitches through two innings, then 49 over the next 41/3. He issued two walks and struck out four. "It took a while to get going, but I got going," Sheets said. "That was me just not really having it together the first couple of innings." Sheets said he mixed in his curveball with a handful of changeups and 10 to 12 cutters. "He was able to work on some things he normally wouldn't in a major league game," Moeller said. "That may have cost him a couple of pitches, but that's the only way you can do it and there's no danger in doing it here." Former Omaha Royal Brent Abernathy lined a two-out, two-run homer into the left field bleachers in the top of the third to put the Sounds in front 2-1. "He has good strike zone discipline and he battles up there," Jirschele said. "If you make a mistake he hurts you. He plays the game the way you like everybody to play it." The runs were unearned because Omaha right fielder Chad Allen dropped Clark's fly ball for an error to lead off the inning. Omaha starter Ryan Baerlocher (4-4) was the hard-luck loser. The right-hander allowed just two unearned runs on three hits through six innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out six. Final: Nashville 3, Omaha (Royals) 1 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Brent Abernathy photo, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2067 Sheets, Abernathy Lead Sounds To 3-1 Victory OMAHA ? Ben Sheets picked up a victory in his rehab start and Brent Abernathy belted a two-run home to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 3-1 victory over the Omaha Royals on a blazing Wednesday evening at Rosenblatt Stadium, where the game time temperature was 105 degrees. With the win, Nashville (53-43) picked up its seventh victory in the last nine contests and improved to 10 games over .500 for the first time since May 7 when the Sounds were 20-10. Sheets (2-1), who picked up his second victory in three PCL starts this season, worked 6 1/3 innings in his rehab outing and allowed one run on three hits while walking two batters and striking out four. The right-hander threw 87 pitches, 54 for strikes. Omaha took a 1-0 lead against Sheets in the bottom of the second inning. Mike Aviles led off the frame with a single before being erased on a Rick Bell fielder?s choice. Bell moved to third on a Matt Tupman single to left before scoring the game?s first run on an Andres Blanco forceout grounder. Abernathy spotted the visitors a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when he smacked a two-out, two-run homer to left off Royals starter Ryan Baerlocher. Jermaine Clark, who had reached on an error by right fielder Chad Allen, scored on the roundtripper, Abernathy?s fourth of the year and first on the road. AUDIO: Abernathy's Go-Ahead Two-Run HR -- www.nashvillesounds.com/a...207-19.mp3 Nashville upped its lead to 3-1 in the seventh when Graham Koonce, who finished 3-for-4 on the evening, doubled to open the frame against Omaha reliever Seth Etherton then scored on Zach Sorensen?s two-out RBI single. Baerlocher (4-4) took the loss after he allowed two unearned runs on three hits while striking out six batters over his six frames of action. Steve Bray and Mitch Stetter each worked a scoreless inning of relief behind Sheets for Nashville before Allan Simpson came on to record the final two outs, striking out both batters he faced, to notch his eighth save of the year. Nashville outfielder Nelson Cruz went 1-for-4 in the contest to extend his hitting streak to eight games. The teams wrap up the four-game set with a 12:05 p.m. matinee on Thursday afternoon. Sounds right-hander Dennis Sarfate (7-5, 3.78) will take the mound to face Omaha right-hander Denny Bautista (1-3, 6.60). 10. Pretty big surprise out of West Virginia: Power Press Release: CHARLESTON, WV (July 19, 2006) - The West Virginia Power, Class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers have made another roster move. Today, right handed pitcher Robbie Wooley was given his outright release. Wooley was placed on the disabled list twice this season and began the 2005 season with the Power before being sent to Helena halfway through the year. Wooley had been on the disabled list for a while, therefore no move was necessary to replace him on the roster. Wooley, Milwaukee's 6th Round pick in the 2003 draft from Kokomo, Indiana had a 1-3 record and a 4.86 ERA during the 2006 season with the Power. Just too many baserunners, to the untrained eye from a distance. The top four rounds went pretty well (Weeks, Gwynn, Palmisano, Fermaint). Catcher Bryan Opdyke was a mis-fire in the 5th round.

Link while active, text follows: www.helenair.com/articles...906_03.txt Big inning sinks Brewers By KEVIN SHIVELY - Independent Record Sports Writer The Helena Brewers had an early lead against the Ogden Raptors Tuesday night, but a five run inning and some key hits gave the Raptors the advantage for the second half of the contest. The Raptors were able to hold onto their lead after the five run fourth inning, winning the game 7-5 and tying the series at 1-1. ?They just beat us tonight,? said Helena skipper Ed Sedar. ?They played long ball and we didn?t, plain and simple.? In the fourth, Rick Taloa led the inning off with a towering homer over the scoreboard in left center field to bring the score to 4-2 Helena. Taloa?s first at bat was also a home run that made his second look like a shallow pop fly. The ball cleared the forty foot net that hangs over the left field wall and probably traveled 475 feet. Taloa was 3-for-4 on the day. An error and two singles scored the next two runs, and Juan Revera hit a two-run homer that was fair by inches to give Ogden the two-run lead. In the fourth third baseman Carlos De La Cruz scored on a Taylor Green single, but after that, Helena only managed two baserunners for the rest of the game. ?Their pitchers came in and had a plan,? said Sedar. ?We didn?t. Sometimes you just get beat.? Paul Coleman got the win, Joe Jones followed with two scoreless innings for the hold, and Garrett White pitched a hitless ninth inning for the save. Jesus Rodriguez started on the mound for the Raptors, pitching into the fourth. He was charged with all of the Brewers? runs but only three were earned. After the fifth, the Brewers turned on the heat as well and didn?t allow a single Ogden baserunner. Brock Kjeldgaard and Stuart Sutherland pitched the final four innings of shutout ball. Stephen Chapman and Chris Errecart were each 2-for-4 for the Brewers. ?Chapman is Chapman,? said Sedar of the centerfielder who is batting .339 for the season. ?He?s solid.? He also had a stolen base. ?Brad Miller was 0-5 tonight,? said Sedar. ?But he?s continued to have a hot bat for us, moving runners when we need him to.? Miller moved De La Cruz to third in the fourth where he went on to score. The two clubs will play again tonight at 7:05. Helena (11-16), who is in last place in the north, will turn to Brandon Parillo (0-2, 3.86), and Ogden will send Charles Dasni (2-2, 6.00) to the mound. Jon Ebelt Independent Record Staff Photographer - Helena Brewer Stephen Chapman, left, looks for the ruling from the field umpire after a close call at second base during Pioneer League baseball Tuesday. Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Jared Fernandez photo, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2065 Fernandez Solid Again As Sounds Edge Royals OMAHA ? Current Pacific Coast League Pitcher-of-the-Week Jared Fernandez turned in another solid start and the Nashville Sounds used a pair of timely extra-base hits to notch a 2-1 win over the division-rival Omaha Royals on Tuesday evening at Rosenblatt Stadium. With the win, Nashville (52-43) picked up its sixth victory in the last eight contests and avoided suffering consecutive losses for the first time in the month of July. Fernandez (6-2) picked up his fifth win in his last six starts. He allowed only one run on five hits while striking out four batters and walking none over his seven innings of work. With the outing, the knuckleballer?s ERA dropped to 2.20 on the season. Royals right fielder Shane Costa spotted the home team a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out solo homer to right off Fernandez. The blast was Costa?s eighth of the year and second in two nights. Nashville claimed a 2-1 lead in the fifth with a set of extra-base hits against Omaha starter Kyle Middleton. Vinny Rottino, who paced the Sounds with a 3-for-4 evening, led off with a double before the next two batters were retired. With two down, shortstop Ozzie Chavez ripped a game-tying RBI triple to left. Kennard Bibbs followed with another two-out run-scoring knock, a double to right. AUDIO: Ozzie Chavez Game-Tying Triple -- www.nashvillesounds.com/a...207-18.mp3 Omaha put only one runner into scoring position the remainder of the night. Andres Blanco reached on a fielding error in the bottom of the fifth and advanced to third before being stranded when Fernandez struck out Costa to end the frame. Sounds right fielder Nelson Cruz upped his hitting streak to seven games with a 2-for-4 evening, his third consecutive multiple-hit contest. Alec Zumwalt recorded the final four outs to notch his team-leading ninth save of the campaign. Middleton (0-3) failed in his attempt to earn his first victory of the year, taking the loss after giving up both Nashville runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 frames. The teams continue the series with a 7:05 p.m. meeting on Wednesday evening. Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Ben Sheets (1-1, 3.12) will make his third rehab start of the year for the Sounds. The Royals will counter with right-hander Ryan Baerlocher (4-3, 4.16). Nashville Box Score and Game Log Link: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...a_omaaaa_1

Final: West Virginia 10, Lexington (Astros) 5 West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER SCORE FIVE IN THE FOURTH TO BEAT LEXINGTON After a 16 inning marathon on Monday night in Lexington that lasted four hours and thirty minutes, the Power and Legends played a three hour and fifteen minute game on Tuesday night that involved a lot of offense, including a five-run fourth inning that put the Power over the top in a 10-5 victory over the Legends. Lexington scored first on a two-out, two-run single from Jose Lopez in the top of the second inning. In the fourth inning, the Power sent ten batters to the plate and scored five runs on five hits to take the lead. Mike Thompson?s error on Michael Brantley?s ground ball to second base allowed Mike Bell to score and cut the lead in half. Hector Bernal?s RBI single began a string of four straight singles and tied the game at 2-2. Brantley scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball and the Power received RBI singles from Darren Ford and Angel Salome to complete the five-run frame. In the top of the fifth inning eight batters went to the plate and the Power benefited from two bases loaded walks issued by Lexington pitcher Jamie Gant. The Power took an 8-2 lead into the eighth inning when Lorenzo Cain hit a leadoff home run, his fifth of the year, to give the Power a 9-2 advantage and Brad Willcutt ripped a two-out, two-run double down the left field line to push the final runs of the night across for the Power. Mike Thompson hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth for Lexington, but it was too little and too late for the Legends. Matt Kretzschmar (2-4) allowed two runs over five innings to earn the victory, Dave Welch tossed four innings out of the bullpen to get the save (1) and Raymar Diaz (8-5) got the loss. The Power are 50-44 overall and 11-14 in the second half after the win while the Legends fell to 55-40 overall and 11-15 in the second half after the loss. 23. Final: Carolina (Marlins) 5, Huntsville 4 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...newsId=928 Carroll Blasts Carolina to Comeback Win Brett Carroll?s three-run home run capped off a five-run sixth inning rally that carried Carolina past Huntsville 5-4 Tuesday night in the opener of a five-game set at Five County Stadium in Zebulon. The Mudcats snapped a four-game slide and won for just the second time in nine games to improve to 10-16 in the second half, while the Stars suffered their fourth straight loss to slide to 10-16 in the half. Stars? starter Steve Hammond carried a 2-0 lead and a 20 2/3 innings scoreless streak into the home sixth before Edgar Gonzalez walked, moved to second base on a Lee Mitchell single and scored on a double by Ryan Bear that cut the visitors lead to 2-1 and chased Hammond from the game. Gerrit Simpson took over and walked Tony Schrager, playing in his first game in affiliated baseball in 2006, to load the bases for Jonathan Aceves, who delivered Mitchell with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at two. Carroll then blasted a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left field for his first long ball at the double-A level to put the home team ahead to stay. It was just the third home run allowed by Simpson in 50 innings of work and the first since a Micah Schnurstein round tripper at Birmingham on June 2. Carolina had been held to three runs in its last three games at Montgomery and 19 during a 10-game trip that also included five games against Jacksonville. Jeff Eure?s two-out pinch-hit single scored Lou Palmisano to cut the Mudcats? lead to 5-3 and knocked Carolina starter Paul Mildren from the game. The southpaw was charged with three runs, two earned, on six hits over 6 2/3 innings and picked up his ninth win of the year. He fanned five, walked two and lasted at least six frames for an 11th straight start. Christopher Young took over on the hill for Carolina in the ninth and yielded a leadoff double to Ryan Braun, who extended his hitting streak to nine games, and a single to Lou Palmisano that pushed Braun to third. Guilder Rodriguez dropped down a bunt to move Palmisano to second base, where he was replaced by pinch-runner Travis Ezi. Pinch-hitter Carlos Lee grounded out to score Braun to make it 5-4 and move Ezi to third, where he was left stranded when Steve Moss flied out to deep left field to end the game. Young recorded his fifth save in eight opportunities with the Mudcats. Palmisano?s fly ball chased home Braun with the first run of the game in the fifth inning and Moss?s solo home run in the sixth pushed the Huntsville lead to 2-0. The Stars collected nine hits after being held to a dozen over the last three games and had multiple hits in three of the last four frames. The series continues Wednesday night with left-hander Jorge De La Rosa making his fifth rehab start for Huntsville against Mudcats? right-hander James Russ. Coverage of the game begins at 6:00 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.
