  3. Final: Orem (Angels) 4, Helena 3, ten innings Helena Game Summary from the Orem Site: Brewer Propels Owlz Past Brewers by Brandon Gaudin July 14, 2006?Tadd Brewer knocked a two strike pitch into right field in the bottom of the tenth, scoring Scott Knazek from third and handing the Owlz a 4-3 victory. Two costly Helena errors assisted the Owlz in the inning. With one out and nobody on, Knazek hit a slow roller to the right side. Second baseman David Parker bobbled the ball and then threw wide of his first basemen, allowing Knazek to reach. Then, Helena pitcher Chris Toneguzzi made an errant pick-off throw wide of first advancing Knazek to second. P.J. Phillips then lifted a deep fly ball to right advancing the Owlz catcher up another ninety feet. Now there were two men down and the stage was set for Tadd Brewer's heroic single. The Owlz got on the board in the first with a two-out RBI single by Tyler Johnson that give the Owlz an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the third, Helena hit a pair of homers off Owlz starter Jeremy Haynes to take a two run advantage of their own. After Haynes issued a leadoff walk, shortstop Brad Miller smashed a pitch over the left-field wall. Two batters later, clean-up hitter Cole Gillespie went the other way off Haynes for a solo shot. Haynes would leave after 2 2/3 innings pitched, and the Owlz bullpen would shut down Helena's offense the rest of the way, allowing just one hit over the remaining 7 1/3. The Owlz, who out-hit the Brewers 13 to 4, could not send any more men across home plate until the bottom of the tenth. Aaron Cook got the victory for the Owlz by pitching a scoreless tenth in relief of Jared Incinelli who worked a near flawless seventh, eighth, and ninth. And Incinelli relieved Barret Browning, who didn't give up a hit in 3 1/3 after coming in for Haynes. With the win, the Owlz improve to 14-10 while Helena drops to 10-14. The same two teams square off tomorrow night in game two of the weekend set at 7:05 P.M (8:05 Central). 4. Final: West Virginia 6, Lakewood (Phillies) 1 West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER SNAP LAKEWOOD'S WINNING STREAK The Lakewood BlueClaws entered Friday night?s contest against the West Virginia Power at First Energy Park looking for a four-game sweep and their seventh straight win. The Power spoiled the party and avoided the sweep with a 6-1 victory. The Power scored three times in the third inning and never looked back. Hector Bernal and Darren Ford began the inning with back-to-back base hits and both scored on Lorenzo Cain?s double. Cain scored during the very next at-bat on Mat Gamel?s second of three singles. Lakewood scored their only run of the contest on Michael Spidale?s RBI single in the bottom of the third. Cain struck again in the fourth inning with a two-run homer, his fourth of the year to give the Power a 5-1 edge. The Power scored their final run in the top of the sixth inning on Gamel?s RBI groundout. Four Power players had multi-hit games and the top three hitters in the batting order accounted for eight of West Virginia?s eleven hits. Michael Brantley finished with a pair of singles, Gamel and Ford each finished with three singles and Cain went 2 for 5 with four runs batted in. Steve Garrison (4-3) pitched six sensational innings, allowing only one run on six hits and struck out four to earn the victory, and Zac Cline (4-2) obtained the loss. The Power are 48-42 overall and 9-12 in the second half after the win while the BlueClaws fell to 53-38 overall and 16-6 in the second half after the loss. The Power will begin a four-game series against the Lexington Legends at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday night. Left hander Ryan Owens (1-0, 2.35) will make the start for Lexington and the Power will counter with left hander Rafael Lluberes (4-4, 3.24). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). 5. Final: St. Lucie (Mets) 4, Brevard County 3 Brevard County Site Game Summary: Mets top Manatees Mike Carp had two RBIs and St. Lucie scored a pair of unearned runs in the eighth inning to defeat visiting Brevard County, 4-2, on Friday. Carp, who delivered a two-run double in the third, led off the eighth and was hit by a pitch. One out later, Caleb Stewart singled before Joe Thatcher struck out Ivan Naccarata. But Thatcher threw wildly after fielding a comebacker by Jamar Hill, allowing Carp and Stewart to score for a 4-2 lead. Mets reliever Rafael Cova (3-0) walked one and struck out one over two hitless innings for the win. Carlos Muniz pitched a perfect ninth for his 19th save. Starter Philip Humber, the New York Mets' 2004 first-round pick who had elbow ligament replacement surgery last season, yielded two unearned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two over six frames. Jose Coronado and Bobby Malek each had two hits for St. Lucie (12-8), which has won two in a row following a six-game losing streak. Thatcher (0-1) took the loss for the Manatees (8-12) after allowing two unearned runs on one hit while striking out two in one inning. Alcides Escobar hit an RBI double and Carlos Corporan had a sacrifice fly in the second to give Brevard County the lead. -- Josh Cooper/MLB.com Brevard County Box Score and Game Log Link: Reliever Robert Hinton with a super four-inning stint; as noted yesterday, for the long-term, these rehab-type brief outings for the several Manatee big-name starters coming off injury is the way to go, understood, but it has to put a strain on the bullpen overall -- guys like Hinton, Dave Johnson, Ben Stanczyk and Bo Hall have all done a good job in their piggyback-type outings, but it's not translating into wins; big-time power gap in the system, doesn't look like a power-starved 2006 Huntsville team will get much help from below in that regard in 2007... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...a_sluafa_1
  6. Final: Mississippi (Braves) 3, Huntsville 1 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...newsId=921 Lerew Continues Mastery Over Stars Anthony Lerew spun seven strong innings to pitch Mississippi past Huntsville 3-1 Friday night in the middle game of a five-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Braves snapped a 10-game road losing streak and improved to 7-16 in the second half of the season, while the Stars were stalled in an attempt to win a fourth straight game for a third time this year and fell to 10-13 in the second half. Barbaro Canizares reached on a fielding error with one out in the second inning and scored one pitch later when Ray Serrano slammed a two-run home run to left-center field. It was his first home run since the 2004 season and the first earned run allowed by Stars? starter Yovani Gallardo in 20 innings at the double-A level. The Stars pushed across their only run in the fourth when Drew Anderson reached with one out on a throwing error by shortstop Yunel Escobar, moved to second base on a walk to Brad Nelson and crossed the plate on a two-out single by Ron Acuna. The Braves added the final run of the night in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Escobar that plated Onil Joseph, who walked with one out and became the first batter walked by Gallardo to score since he joined the Stars. Gallardo lasted six innings and allowed five hits, walked two and fanned five but suffered the loss to drop to 0-2. The Stars have scored four runs in the four games he has started and only three when he has been on the hill. Lerew induced Jeff Eure to bounce into an inning-ending double play in the sixth with runners at the corners and retired the side in order in the seventh to close out his longest outing with the Braves. He yielded three hits, walked two and fanned five to pick up the win to square his record at 2-2. Lerew has now allowed only two earned runs over 29 innings in four starts against the Stars and is a perfect 4-0 against them since the start of the 2005 season. Arthur Santos retired the side in order in the eighth inning and Zach Schreiber struck out Acuna and J.C. Boscan in a driving rain with two runners on in the ninth to close out the game and earn his 11th save in 11 opportunities. The series continues Saturday night with right-hander Tim Dillard taking the hill for Huntsville against Braves? left-hander Matt Harrison. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. ***Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 Stars get silent treatment Mississippi's Lerew tough as hosts fall 3-1 By MARK McCARTER Huntsville Times Sports Staff, markcolumn@aol.com Anthony Lerew is ranked the No. 1 pitching prospect in the Atlanta Braves organization. That assessment will get no argument from the Huntsville Stars. For the fourth time in two years, Lerew bumfoozled the Stars' hitters, this time keying a 3-1 Mississippi win over Huntsville that ended a three-game Stars' win streak in front of an announced crowd of 5,790. It was the first road victory for the M-Braves since June 20. They'll play the Stars (10-13) twice more, tonight at 7:05 and Sunday at 6:05. Lerew, a 23-year-old Pennsylvanian, allowed only three hits and an unearned run in seven innings Friday. In three encounters last season, the Stars touched him for only two runs and eight hits in 22 innings. For the figure-filberts, it's a par-busting 0.62 ERA whenever he goes against the Stars. And a 4-0 mark. Meanwhile, his equally talented and touted counterpart, Huntsville's Yovani Gallardo, may have the look of one of the best pitching prospects to roll through here in years, but has the luck of a man who saw a black cat cross his path moments before he walked under a ladder. Gallardo is now 0-2 in four starts since his promotion from Class A Brevard County. But until a two-run homer by catcher Ray Serrano in the second, Gallardo had not given up an earned run in 20 innings. "Right pitch, wrong location," Huntsville manager Don Money said of the belt-high fastball. Asked for an assessment of Gallardo, Mississippi manager Jeff Blauser chuckled, then said, "That's a tough call. Because everybody we've faced here recently looks like Cy Young.'' The Braves managed only six hits Friday, after getting five on Thursday and two on Wednesday. After beginning 2005 at Mississippi, and being voted to the league's mid-season All-Star Game, Lerew was promoted to Triple-A Richmond and eventually to Atlanta, where he appeared in seven late-season games. He started off in Richmond this season, but struggled somewhat and was sent to Mississippi. "Mechanically, he got off from where he was a year ago," Blauser said. "The organization felt it would be in his best interest to come back here with K-Dub (pitching coach Kent Willis) who knows him well, and he's responded. "More than anything, it's good to see he's over his mechanical issues," Blauser continued. "He can go out there and pitch in a way that's competitive instead of worrying about where he might be off mechanically." For Gallardo, it was his first start since July 6. He pitched an inning Sunday in the Futures Game in Pittsburgh and threw a bullpen session on the side. But, said Money, "He was up in the zone. He wasn't sharp. His location was off tonight." In the second, Huntsville shortstop Guilder Rodriguez booted a grounder by Barbaro Canizares with one out. Serrano followed with his no-doubt homer to left, the first of the season by the Braves' backup catcher. Drew Anderson reached on a Yunel Escobar throwing error with one out in the Huntsville fourth, took second when Brad Nelson walked and scored on a two-out single by Ron Acuna to cut the lead to 2-1, but an Escobar sacrifice fly in the fifth gave Mississippi its final 3-1 lead. With a thunderstorm pouncing on Joe Davis Stadium as the Huntsville ninth began, the Stars had one last chance when reliever Zach Schreiber issued a pair of one-out walks. Followers of Mississippi's parent club might be led to believe such relief is an organization habit. However, Schreiber struck out Acuna and ex-Brave farmhand J.C. Boscan to end the threat. 7. Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Sounds jump on top early Faith Night good for Nashville again By MIKE ORGAN Tennessean Staff Writer Blessings rained down in abundance once again on Faith Night for Nashville on the way to an 8-3 victory over Memphis. It was typical of most Faith Nights this year for the Sounds. They improved to 5-1 this season on the night that has garnered national attention since it began in 2002. Nashville is now 19-10 on all Faith Nights. The pre-game promotions are geared for church groups and include a concert by a Christian recording group. A crowd of 9,482 saw the Sounds pick up their sixth win in the last eight games. The Sounds stretched a two-run lead in the sixth inning to a 7-2 advantage when shortstop Jermaine Clark knocked a one-hop shot to the center field wall that scored Vinny Rottino and Chad Moeller. Clark then scored on an RBI single by Tony Gwynn. "They're a very good ball club when it comes to answering back so it makes it tough on us,'' said Clark, who was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. "(Alan) Benes left the ball up and I got it into the gap and luckily we scored a couple of runs.'' Memphis, which fell 8-0 in the series opener Thursday, now has lost six of its last eight games. Trailing 7-3, the Redbirds tried to rally in the eighth by loading the bases on a single to left field by Skip Schumaker with one out. Memphis catcher Mike Rose then hit it up the middle where Clark gloved the ball and flipped it to second baseman Brent Abernathy, who got Schumaker out, and then fired to Graham Koonce at first for the double play. Nashville's offense, which got 12 hits in Thursday's 8-0 win over Memphis, stayed hot. Every position player got a hit except for Abernathy, and Nashville finished with a total of 13 hits. The Redbirds, who managed just five hits Thursday, had their sixth hit by the fourth inning. Over the last five innings, however, Memphis managed just three more hits. Dennis Sarfate (7-5), who has struggled recently, got the win. ***Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Sounds, Redbirds have look of 1902 By MIKE ORGAN Tennessean Staff Writer Nashville and Memphis wore throwback uniforms Friday for Turn Back The Clock Night at Greer Stadium. The Sounds' were replicas of the Nashville Vols uniforms and Redbirds wore Memphis Egyptians uniforms. Both sets were from the 1902 season when both clubs were in the Southern Association. Nashville wore baggy white short sleeve tops with "VOLS" across the chest in black letters and baggy white pants with a yellowish-orange pocket cover on the right hip pocket flap. The shirts had the same orange color collar and a stripe down the front. Nashville wore black shoes, black knee-high socks and had orange hats with a white visor. Memphis wore black pants with a tan hip pocket flap, tan tops with a black collar and stripe down the front and "EGYPTIANS" across the chest. Memphis' hats were black with a white bill. The Redbirds wore red shoes and white socks. A silent auction took place during the game and fans were able to purchase the uniform sets of both teams. Proceeds benefited the Nashville Sounds Foundation. Streaks extended: Sounds left fielder Dave Krynzel extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single in the third inning. That is a season-high streak for Krynzel. Third baseman Vinny Rottino hit a single to right field in the sixth inning to extend his streak to eight games, his longest this year, and first baseman Graham Koonce's single in the fourth the fourth game in a row in which he's had a hit. Better bats: Memphis managed just five hits in Thursday's 8-0 loss to the Sounds. Friday night the Redbirds got their sixth hit in the fourth inning on a single by catcher Michel Hernandez, which loaded the bases. Revived: The Sounds, who finished last among the 16 PCL clubs with a .229 June team batting average, have turned things around in July. Nashville followed a 12-hit game Thursday night with 13 hits in Friday night's game. Take a walk: Koonce tied a Nashville single-game record Thursday by drawing four walks from Memphis pitchers. Koonce became the 13th Sounds player to accomplish the feat in franchise's history. Roster move: Memphis placed Brian Daubach on the disabled list Friday with an inflamed right hand and activated Hernandez from the disabled list after being inactive since June 22. 8. Final: Nashville 8, Memphis (Cardinals) 3 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2054 Vols Defeat Egyptians On Retro Night, 8-3 Nelson Cruz in photo... http://www.nashvillesounds.com/images/news/turnbacktheclock2006.jpg NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? The historic Vols came back to Music City for one more game in the form of the Nashville Sounds and scored an 8-3 victory over the cross-state rival Memphis Egyptians (played by the Redbirds) on Friday night in front of 9,482 fans at Greer Stadium. Nashville starter Dennis Sarfate (7-5) put together his best start in his last five trips to the hill, logging five innings of six-hit, two-run baseball en route to his seventh win of the year, which ties him with Ben Hendrickson (7-3) for the most wins on the team. Sounds batters gave Sarfate a cushion to work with as the club etched eight runs for the second night in a row on 13 hits, their most knocks in the last 44 games. Every position player in the starting lineup tallied a hit except Brent Abernathy (0-for-4), who drove in a run. Tony Gwynn, Dave Krynzel, Chad Moeller, and Jermaine Clark all recorded multiple hits on the Sounds? 13-hit night. The last time the Sounds had 13 or more hits in a game was May 25 against Portland at Greer Stadium. Gwynn?s 2-for-5 performance gives him a team-best 34 multi-hit games and Clark finished a home run sort of the cycle during his 3-for-4 night. Krynzel?s 2-for-4 night extended his current hitting streak to a season-best seven games. The Redbirds jumped out to an early lead, etching a run in the visiting half of the second. Rico Washington scored from second on a Skip Schumaker RBI single to center field. Washington?s run gave Memphis a one-run lead but the celebration was short-lived. The Sounds banged out two runs on four hits in the second inning off Memphis starter Brad Thompson to take the lead. The Sounds started the inning off with back-to-back singles off the bats of Nelson Cruz and Graham Koonce. With ducks on the pond, Moeller smoked a ball down the left field line to score Cruz from second. Koonce scored on the following at-bat on a Clark RBI double into the left field corner. Koonce?s single brought his current hitting streak to a season-high four games, which he has accomplished two other times. The Redbirds were able to tie the game up in the fourth with the help of back-to-back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Sarfate buckled down and started whiffing the Memphis batters. En route to striking out the last three batters, Sarfate allowed a pitch to go just wide of Moeller behind the plate to allow John Gall to cross home, knotting the game up at two runs apiece. Thompson was taken out of the game following the conclusion of the third inning due to a pitch count. This was Thompson?s first start since joining Memphis on July 4th. The Sounds greeted the new hurler, Alan Benes, in dramatic fashion as the home team plated two runs on a Tony Gwynn bases-clearing double. Vinny Rottino, who walked, and Moeller, who reached base on a fielding error by second baseman Derek Wathan on a potential double-play ball, both scored to give the Sounds a two-run lead. Benes (3-2) took the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief work for the Redbirds. Nashville continued to run around the basepaths in the sixth, adding three more runs to their lead. With Rottino on third and Moeller on first, Clark tripled off the wall in center field to score the two baserunners. Clark scored later in the inning on a RBI single off the bat of Gwynn to give the Sounds a five-run lead at 7-2. In the same inning, Gwynn swiped second marking his team-leading 24th stolen base of the year. Rottino?s single extended the infielder?s hitting streak to a season-best eight games. The Sounds? bullpen continued to remain hot as five relievers combine to throw four innings of one-run baseball behind Sarfate. The Nashville defense made outstanding inning-ending plays to conclude both the seventh and eighth innings to keep the Redbirds at bay. After the visitors had scored one run in the seventh to pull within 7-3, Timo Perez came up with two down and runners on the corners and lifted a soft fly into shallow right-center. Gwynn made a fantastic sliding catch following a long run to retire Perez and escape the inning. With the bases loaded and one out in the eighth, Clark was able to track down a Mike Rose groundball up the middle, make a glove flip to Abernathy at the bag, and the second baseman caught the ball barehanded and fired to first to turn two to get the Sounds out of the jam. The Sounds added their final run in the eighth on an Abernathy sacrifice fly to center. On Saturday night, the Sounds will face off against the Redbirds at 6 p.m. for game three of the four-game series. Nashville right-hander Carlos Villanueva (0-0, 0.00) will make his first career Triple-A start in the contest. Memphis will counter with veteran left-hander Chris Narveson (4-2, 3.09).

Link while active, text follows: www.nashvillecitypaper.co...s_id=50986 Fernandez-led Sounds topple raging Redbirds By Nate Rau, Nashville City Paper Sports Correspondent The Memphis Redbirds could not figure out Nashville starting pitcher Jared Fernandez, could not silence the Sounds? offense and could not get along with home plate umpire Scot Chamberlain on Thursday night at Greer Stadium. The end result was the Sounds breezing past Memphis by a score of 8-0, but not until four Redbirds were ejected by Chamberlain in dramatic fashion. Nashville (48-42) got on the board right away with four runs in the first inning off Memphis starter Travis Smith. In the second inning, the first Redbird was ejected when Mike Rose was tossed for arguing balls and strikes. The Sounds added another run in the third and three more in the fifth when Memphis came unraveled. Apparently frustrated with Chamberlain?s strike zone, manager Danny Sheaffer, pitching coach Dyar Miller and reliever John Webb were all ejected following a demonstrative back-and-forth debate with the umpiring crew. Before he went to the dugout, Webb tossed the baseball into the stands in frustration. ?I guess it was balls and strikes,? Fernandez said of the reason Memphis was so angry with Chamberlain. ?I thought he was pretty consistent.? The Memphis fireworks came close to overshadowing a masterful start for Fernandez (5-2). The 34-year-old knuckleballer went the distance and gave up just five hits. It was Fernandez?s second complete game shutout of the season. He leads the Pacific Coast League with three complete games. Fernandez downed Memphis in his previous start eight days earlier. ?I?m not a big fan of facing teams back-to-back,? Fernandez said. ?But I think it was long enough with the all-star break in between. It worked out pretty well.? Fernandez struggled in the big leagues with Milwaukee earlier this season. Besides that hiccup, Fernandez said he?s proud of the way he?s thrown since asking Cincinnati to release him late last season. Fernandez became the first Sound to pitch two shutouts since Bronson Arroyo did so in 2002. ?When I came back [with Scranton, the Triple A affiliate of Philadelphia] late last year, that?s when I think I got it,? Fernandez said. The Nashville offense was also in-sync. Vinny Rottino led the way with three hits and extended his season-best hitting streak to seven games. First baseman Graham Koonce tied a team record with four walks. Moeller elects to join Sounds: Catcher Chad Moeller joined the Sounds roster on Thursday, effectively choosing to stay with the Milwaukee Brewers organization instead of becoming a free agent and joining another team. Moeller was outrighted last week when Mike Rivera was promoted to become the Brewers backup catcher. That?s the role Moeller had filled the previous two-plus seasons.

Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Sounds shut out Memphis Four Redbirds get tossed during game By MIKE ORGAN Tennessean Staff Writer The Sounds took advantage of the All-Star break, returning to action Thursday night with an 8-0 win over Memphis. The Redbirds, meanwhile, didn't handle the time off nearly as well. Two players and two coaches were ejected after a flurry of arguments with the home plate umpire. Meanwhile, Nashville pitcher Jared Fernandez (5-2) got his second shutout in his last four starts. A Greer Stadium crowd of 6,850 saw Nashville, idle since Sunday's 4-3 loss to Round Rock, get eight hits in its first 19 at-bats. "Really, two good things happened for us,'' said Sounds right fielder Nelson Cruz, who had two hits. "They got frustrated by all of those errors (five) that they made early and then we jumped on them and took advantage of the opportunity when they kind of got lost and started arguing a lot.'' The Sounds scored four in the first, led 5-0 when Cruz scored in the third and were up 8-0 after five. That's when the fireworks erupted between the Redbirds and umpire Scot Chamberlain. After Nashville padded its lead with three runs on three hits, Memphis catcher Brian Esposito got in an argument with Chamberlain. During that time Memphis pitcher John Webb, who had entered in the fourth inning, sprinted off the mound and jumped into the argument. Webb was quickly ejected, which brought Redbirds Manager Danny Sheaffer and pitching coach Dyar Miller out of the dugout. After several minutes of more arguing Sheaffer and Miller were tossed by Chamberlain. Before he left, Webb tossed a ball into the stands. It was eventually thrown back onto the field by a fan. Esposito was not ejected. He had come in during the third inning to replace starting catcher Mike Rose, whom Chamberlain ejected after Rose argued the call of a pitch. It was the most ejections in a Sounds game since May 30 at Greer Stadium when a total of five (four for Iowa and one for Nashville) were tossed. The shutout was the Sounds' ninth this year, which is tied with Salt Lake for the PCL lead. When the game wasn't being interrupted by the arguing, Nashville kept its bats hot. The Sounds had 11 hits in the first six innings and finished with 12. The eight runs scored by Nashville are the most since an 8-4 home win over Albuquerque on June 3. ***Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Moeller is sent down, starts behind plate By MIKE ORGAN Tennessean Staff Writer Catcher Chad Moeller was added to the Sounds roster Thursday and started the game against Memphis. Moeller had played in 29 games this season with the Milwaukee Brewers. The 31-year-old batted .184 (18-for-98) with two home runs and five RBIs. His performance behind the plate had been solid with the Brewers. Moeller had committed only one error in 208 total chances (.995) and had no passed balls. He threw out three of 25 runners attempting to steal (.120). Moeller has spent the last two-and-a-half seasons as the Brewers' back-up catcher. Thursday was the first time he had appeared in a minor league game since July 13, 2002 when he played for Triple-A Tucson in the Diamondbacks system. Moeller filled a roster spot for the Sounds vacated by Pacific Coast League All-Star catcher Mike Rivera, who was called up to Milwaukee on July 6. Krynzel catches fire: The Sounds' Dave Krynzel, with his first at-bat Thursday, hit a shot to the centerfield wall that scored Brent Abernathy and gave Nashville a 1-0 lead. It was Krynzel's seventh RBI in July and over the last nine games, which leads the team. In the first 61 games of the year Krynzel drove in only nine runs. Krynzel scored Thursday on an error giving the Sounds a 2-0 edge. Cruz hobbled: The Sounds' Nelson Cruz was hit on a throw by Memphis pitcher Travis Smith on his way to first base in the first inning. Cruz stayed on the ground for several minutes and was tended to by Sounds trainer Jeff Paxson. He was, however, able to stay in the game. Cruz advanced to second when Graham Koonce was walked and then scored on a line drive by Vinny Rottino. They're back: Nashville's three PCL All-Stars ? pitcher Ben Hendrickson, centerfielder Tony Gwynn, and Cruz ? returned to town Thursday afternoon at 12:30 after playing in the game in Toledo, Ohio, Wednesday night. Having three players on the All-Star team was the most the Sounds have had since 2001. Rose ejected: Memphis catcher Mike Rose tossed his helmet and spun around to argue in the third inning with plate umpire Scot Chamberlain. Rose was ejected from the game immediately. Brian Esposito replaced Rose.

Knuckleballer Jared Fernandez threw his second complete-game shutout in his last four starts on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium, blanking the Memphis Redbirds on a five-hitter to lead the Nashville Sounds to an 8-0 victory. The shutout was the ninth of the season for Nashville (48-42), tying the club with Salt Lake for most in the circuit. Fernandez continued his recent dominance against Pacific Coast League hitters and dropped his ERA to 2.28 on the year, tying for 4th in the circuit. The knuckleballer has been virtually untouchable in his last six starts, posting a 4-1 record and miniscule 1.01 ERA (5 ER / 44.2 IP) while walking only two batters and striking out 30 over that span. Fernandez?s complete game was his PCL-leading third of the year. He struck out six Redbirds and did not walk a batter for the second straight outing. The right-hander is the first Sound to toss two shutouts in a season since Bronson Arroyo (Pirates' organization) in 2002. AUDIO: Fernandez Completes The Shutout -- www.nashvillesounds.com/a...207-13.wma The eight runs scored by the Sounds were the club?s most in five weeks, dating back to an 8-4 victory on June 3 against Albuquerque. The eight-run margin of victory was Nashville's largest since May 21 when they defeated Tacoma by a 10-1 count. Memphis was held to only five hits on the evening and didn?t help their own cause with five errors in the game. None of the errors led to an unearned run for the Sounds, however. Nashville grabbed a 4-0 lead by batting around in the bottom of the first inning against Memphis starter and former Milwaukee Brewer Travis Smith. With one out, Brent Abernathy walked and scored on Dave Krynzel?s double to left-center. The run-scoring knock extended the outfielder?s hitting streak to a season-best six games (7-for-21, .333) and produced Krynzel?s team-leading seventh RBI of July; he drove in only nine total runs in the first three months of the season. Nelson Cruz singled to put runners on the corners before Krynzel scored when Smith?s pickoff throw to first base struck Cruz. The All-Star writhed in pain on the ground for several minutes but remained in the contest. After a walk to Graham Koonce, Vinny Rottino increased the Nashville lead to 3-0 with an RBI single to left. Zach Sorensen closed out the frame?s scoring with a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Koonce. Rottino finished 3-for-4 to up his hitting streak to a season-high-tying seven games. He is batting .462 (12-for-26) over that stretch. The Sounds increased the lead to 5-0 in the third when Cruz, who had opened the inning with a single, scored on a Krynzel single to right combined with a fielding error by Redbirds right fielder Brian Martin. Nashville extended the lead during a three-run fifth that also included three Memphis ejections: reliever John Webb, manager Danny Sheaffer, and pitching coach Dyar Miller, all while arguing balls and strikes. The trio of Redbirds ejections came two innings after starting catcher Mike Rose was tossed by home plate umpire Scot Chamberlain. The Sounds opened the fifth by loading the bases against Webb before pitcher Jared Fernandez produced an RBI groundout to short to up the lead to 6-0. Tony Gwynn and Abernathy followed with consecutive run-scoring singles off Webb. All three Memphis ejections followed that play and delayed the game for approximately 15 minutes due to an ongoing argument at the plate between Sheaffer, Miller, and the umpiring crew. Koonce drew his fourth walk of the evening in the bottom of the sixth inning from Memphis reliever Orber Moreno to tie the Nashville single-game record. He is the 13th different player to record four walks in a contest and the first since Adam Hyzdu on June 29, 2002 at Iowa. Catcher Chad Moeller made a strong Nashville debut in the contest, finishing 2-for-4. He singled in his first Sounds at-bat in the bottom of the first inning and later added a double in the seventh. Gwynn finished 2-for-4 on the evening, his team-leading 32nd multiple-hit effort of the year, before being lifted for rest in the seventh frame. He played all nine innings of the Triple-A All-Star Game in Toledo last night. Smith (3-4) took the loss for Memphis after allowing five runs on six hits in only three innings of work before being pulled from the contest. The teams continue the series with a 7:00 p.m. meeting on Friday evening. Right-hander Dennis Sarfate (6-5, 3.79) takes the mound for the Sounds to face Memphis right-hander Brad Thompson (0-0, 0.00), who will make his first start of the season for the Redbirds. 23. Final: Huntsville 3, Mississippi (Braves) 1 Can the Stars dream of a second-half playoff push? Only three games out... Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows... www.huntsvillestars.com/n...newsId=919 Strong Pitching Carries Stars, Again Steve Moss hit a two-run home run to back the strong pitching of Jorge De La Rosa and the bullpen in Huntsville?s 3-1 win over Mississippi Thursday night in the second of a five-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars won their third straight game to improve to 10-12 in the second half, while the Braves lost their tenth straight road game and slipped to 6-16 in the second half. The Stars have held the opposition to two runs or less in six of their last seven games, five of which have resulted in victories. Guilder Rodriguez dropped down a one-out bunt single in the third, moved to second on a De La Rosa sacrifice and scored when Moss jolted a 2-1 offering from Chris Waters over the wall in left field for his fourth home run of the year to give the Stars a 2-0 lead. It was Moss?s first home run since June 6 at Birmingham. Luis Hernandez reached second base to open the fourth on a fielding error by left fielder Drew Anderson and scored on a two-out single by Brandon Jones, who had three of the visitor's five hits. De La Rosa allowed a lead off single to Yunel Escobar in the sixth but it was erased when the Braves? shortstop was thrown out trying to steal. Jones followed with a single and that spelled the end of the night for the Huntsville southpaw, who reached his prescribed 85 pitch limit. Brett Evert took over and picked Jones off at first before retiring Ray Serrano to end the inning. De La Rosa hasn?t given up an earned run in three of his four rehab starts and has issued only two walks in 19 innings. The Stars stranded runners at first and third with nobody out in the seventh inning but tacked on an insurance marker in the eighth inning on a two-out single by Jeff Eure that scored Callix Crabbe. Both players, along with Ryan Braun, who doubled twice, extended their hitting streaks to a season-high seven games. Khalid Ballouli took over for Evert and retired the side in order in the eighth inning on four pitches and set down all three hitters he faced in the ninth to preserve the win and earn his first save of the season. It was also the first save for the Stars in a game decided by three runs or less since May 14 at Tennessee. The series continues Friday night with right-hander Yovani Gallardo taking the hill for Huntsville against Braves? right-hander Anthony Lerew. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. ***Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 Stars align as Huntsville shackles Mississippi 3-1 Center fielder Moss says squad is coming together By STEVE CAMPBELL, Huntsville Times Huntsville Stars center fielder Steve Moss had simple, yet logical reasoning behind his team's 3-1 win over the Mississippi Braves on Thursday night. "We just all came together," Moss said. Huntsville starting pitcher Jorge De La Rosa went 6 1/3 innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out five. In the third inning, Moss took the 94-degree heat off the minds of the 1,630 at Joe Davis Stadium by swatting a line-drive homer over the fence in left field. The win pushed the Stars to 10-12 in the second half and 34-57 overall. "We're only heading up right now," Moss said. Of course, few games are perfect. A dropped pop-up in the fourth inning by Stars left fielder Drew Anderson later meant an unearned run charged to De La Rosa. The Braves mustered five total hits, but didn't make any of them too damaging. Whenever the Stars found themselves in trouble, they somehow managed a way out. After a Brave walked in the sixth with just one out, the Stars closed the inning with a double play. In the seventh, Mississippi shortstop Yunel Escobar ripped a single up the middle. During the next at-bat, Escobar got a late jump on a stolen base attempt and was thrown out by Stars catcher Lou Palmisano. Mississippi outfielder Brandon Jones, who led the Braves with three hits, reached base in the at-bat, only to be picked off by Huntsville reliever Brett Evert. "I think we're playing pretty good baseball right now," said Stars first basemen Jeff Eure, who smashed a single up the middle in the eighth to bring home second basemen Callix Crabbe. "The pitching staff has been there all year and the offense has also been good (lately). To add on like that in the eighth, that was big." In his last 29 2/3 innings, the 22-year-old right-hander has given up just three earned runs. Travis Hope ended the game with two scoreless frames, striking out one, walking one and giving up one hit. Carp sparked the Mets in the first with a two-run double. He hit his seventh homer of the year, a solo shot, in the third to give St. Lucie a 5-1 advantage. Jose Coronado, Bobby Malek and Enrique Cruz each added two hits for St. Lucie (11-8). 25. Final: Westwood (Phillies) 8, West Virginia 3 Doesn't look like the Power is going to survive this killer road schedule in July, really struggling lately... West Virginia Site Game Summary: Salome extends hitting streak in loss Just 60 miles south of Manhattan, New York which is the hometown of Angel Salome, the third year player from Washington Heights High School reached base three times on Thursday night with a pair of singles to extend his hitting streak to ten games. Despite Salome?s terrific offensive performance, the West Virginia Power could not cool off the red-hot Lakewood BlueClaws as they beat the Power 8-3. Jeremy Slayden hit a solo home run off of Matt Kretzschmar in the bottom of the second inning to give Lakewood a 1-0 advantage. Mike Bell ripped a two-out RBI double in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1 but that was as close as the Power got. Lakewood plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and never looked back. Julian Williams drove in the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly, Greg Golson tripled in two and scored the final run of the inning on Avelino Asprilla?s base hit. Lakewood sent eight batters to the plate in the sixth inning and scored twice. Cooper Osteen ripped an RBI single and John Urick walked with the bases loaded to plate the second run of the inning. Michael Brantley belted a one-out triple in the seventh inning and scored on a wild pitch to make it a 7-2 ballgame, but Lakewood answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Julian Williams drove in his second run of the game on a sacrifice fly. The Power scored the final run of the game in the top of the eighth on an RBI single from Tony Festa, but it was too little and too late for the Power. Carlos Carrasco (7-5) earned the victory, and Kretzschmar (1-4) obtained the loss. The Power are 47-42 overall and 8-12 in the second half after the loss while the BlueClaws improved to 53-37 overall and 16-5 in the second half after the win. The Power will finish the four game series against the Lakewood BlueClaws at First Energy Park on Friday night. Left hander Zac Cline (4-1, 3.29) will make the start for Lakewood and the Power will counter with left hander Steve Garrison (3-3, 2.83). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). ***Link while active, text follows: www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll...40442/1012 Claws continue winning ways Offense comes through in sixth straight win BY JOE ADELIZZI, Asbury Park Press STAFF WRITER LAKEWOOD ? Things are starting to get scary at FirstEnergy Park these days. The Lakewood BlueClaws have been almost magical in their march through South Atlantic League opponents, which continued Thursday night in their 8-3 victory against the West Virginia Power. It seems whatever the Claws need these days, they get. When they needed a jump start to go along with the usual outstanding pitching of Carlos Carrasco, Jeremy Slayden smashed a home run in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. When the Power tied the game on Michael Bell's double in the fourth inning, the Claws, the way a good team is supposed to, came right back, scoring four runs. "We just seem to be doing whatever we have to to win," said Slayden, who walked and went to third when Lou Marson reached base on a Power error by Bell at shortstop to key the outburst. Right on schedule, Julian Williams hit a sacrifice fly. Greg Golson followed with a towering triple and everything else was academic. "Carlos pitched OK," said manager Dave Huppert. "But he threw too many pitches (107). Too many deep counts." Of course, even Huppert can see what is happening to his offense. "They just keep building runs," he said. Slayden, who would later triple, said that he never doubted the team's offense would come to life. "When people were saying we had no offense, I would look around and see a lot of guys who can sting the ball. When the warm weather came, so did the bats," said Slayden, who now has 42 RBI. Carrasco (7-5) was throwing hard, hitting 93 mph with his fastball. And while he didn't have complete command, he was tough to hit. He worked six innings, allowing four hits while striking out six, and walking two. So has been the work of the BlueClaws who are now 16-5 in the second half and 53-37 overall. They have now won a season-high six straight games, and nine of their past 10 games.
