  1. Nashville Site Doubleheader Summary: Link for Jared Fernandez photo, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2007 Sounds Split Twinbill With RedHawks NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? The Nashville Sounds split a doubleheader with the Oklahoma RedHawks in front of 9,116 fans on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium, winning the opener by a 3-1 count before falling 9-2 in 10 innings in the nightcap. Nashville (39-31) prevailed in the evening?s first contest despite finishing 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. The Sounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opener with a pair of runs off Music City native R.A. Dickey in the bottom of the second inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Jermaine Clark grounded into an RBI forceout that erased Mark Johnson at second but plated Nelson Cruz with the game?s first run. During the following at-bat, Dickey uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Graham Koonce to score from third for a 2-0 Nashville lead. Oklahoma plated a run in the fourth when Drew Meyer scored on an RBI groundout by former Sound Adam Hyzdu, which reduced the Sounds? lead to 2-1. Nashville second baseman Zach Sorensen belted his first home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning, a leadoff solo shot off Dickey, to put the home team on top by two. Knuckleballer Jared Fernandez (2-1) worked all seven innings of the opener to earn the victory with his first complete game of the year. He held Oklahoma to one run on five hits to pick up his first win since mid-April. Dickey (2-5) took the loss and fell to 3-11 lifetime against the Sounds after allowing three runs on five hits over five innings. The nightcap loss, which snapped a four-game winning streak, marked Nashville?s sixth extra-inning game of the year. With the 9-2, 10-inning win, Oklahoma improved to 5-0 in extra-inning contests this season. The RedHawks broke a 2-2 tie with a seven-run outburst against the Sounds bullpen in the top of the tenth inning, equaling the biggest single-frame scoring output permitted by Nashville this season. Former Sound Adrian Brown led off the top of the tenth with a single to left, was sacrificed to second, and scored the go-ahead on a Joaquin Arias single to left off Mike Meyers. Oklahoma later added six runs with two outs beginning with a Jason Hart two-run single against Chris Mabeus, who replaced Meyers on the hill. After a bases-loaded walk issued to Nick Trzesniak, Brown recorded his second knock of the frame to up the visitors? advantage to 7-2. Drew Meyer wrapped up the evening?s scoring with a two-run double to the gap in right-center, a play that concluded with Brown being thrown out at the plate to end the inning. Brent Abernathy gave Nashville a 1-0 lead in the nightcap with a one-out RBI single off RedHawks starter Kevin Walker in the bottom of the first inning. The knock, which scored Jermaine Clark, snapped a season-high 16 at-bat hitless stretch for the veteran infielder. Catcher Mike Rivera doubled the Sounds? advantage to 2-0 in the second when he slugged his ninth home run of the year, a leadoff solo shot to left off Walker. RedHawks center fielder Laynce Nix tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer to right-center off Nashville starter Justin Lehr. The blast was Nix?s eighth of the year. The offenses remained silent over the next five innings before the RedHawks? game-winning outburst in the tenth. Oklahoma reliever Erasmo Ramirez (4-0) picked up the victory after tossing three scoreless innings to finish the game for the visitors. Meyers (2-4) took the loss after allowing four runs in his 1 2/3 frames of work. Neither starter factored in the decision in the nightcap as Lehr allowed two runs in five innings and Walker gave up two runs (one earned) in three innings during his spot start for Oklahoma. The teams wrap up the series with a 6 p.m. finale on Sunday evening. Left-hander Dana Eveland (3-2, 1.93) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Oklahoma southpaw and former Brewers farmhand Derek Lee (2-3, 4.08).

  3. Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...newsId=881 Moore's Mashes Homer to Keep Jaxx' Hopes Alive Scott Moore slammed a three-run home run in the top half of the ninth inning to lift West Tenn to a 6-4 comeback win over Huntsville Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium to keep their first half playoff hopes alive. The Diamond Jaxx closed the first half at 43-27 and moved to within a half game of division leader Chattanooga, which lost to Tennessee and closes the first half tomorrow against the Smokies. The Stars finished the first half with a 24-45 mark and dropped 24 of their last 29 games. Huntsville fell to 10-24 at home and wound up losing 17 of their last 18 games on home soil after a May 7 win over Montgomery. Khalid Ballouli tossed four scoreless, hitless innings in relief for the Stars to preserve a lead of 4-3 and was replaced on the hill by Matt Smith for the ninth inning. Brian Dopirak opened the inning with a single on the first pitch, Miguel Negron doubled off the wall in right field on the next pitch to push Dopirak to third and Moore drove the next pitch over both tiers of signage in right-center field for the game-winning long ball, his 11th of the season and second of the series. Clay Rapada retired the Stars in the ninth to earn his 21st save and second of the series, while Rocky Cherry earned his second win of the set by retiring all six hitters he faced. Nic Jackson?s leadoff home run in the fourth and a run-scoring double in the inning by Negron staked the visitors to a 3-0 lead. Huntsville scored four times in the home fourth to grab the lead, marking the first time in 12 starts that Randy Wells had allowed more than two runs in an outing and more than one earned run. Ron Acuna singled home the first run, Drew Anderson doubled in two to tie the game and Ozzie Chavez singled home Anderson to give the home side the lead. Wells set down the last seven hitters he faced and lasted six innings, giving up six hits to match a season-high, walking two to match a season-high and striking out five. The Stars open the second half of the season at Mobile on Monday night with right-hander Corey Thurman taking the hill against BayBears southpaw Sean Thompson. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Final: West Virginia 10, Hickory (Pirates) 2 West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER SURGE IN THE THIRD The West Virginia Power sent 12 batters to the plate, scored seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the third inning of Saturday night?s game against the Hickory Crawdads at Appalachian Power Park and beat the Crawdads by the final score of 10-2. The Crawdads scored first for the second night in a row, scoring their only runs of the game on a two-run homer from Andrew McCutchen in the first inning. In the third inning the Power offense blew up for seven runs on seven hits. Lorenzo Cain tied the game hitting his second double of the game to bring in Nate Yoho and Scotty McKnight, tying the game at 2-2. The Power took the lead moments later when Angel Salome knocked Cain in on an RBI single. Tony Festa drove in the next run on a sacrifice fly and Yoho drove in two runs on his second single of the inning. Scotty McKnight knocked in the final run of the inning on his second base hit in the seven-run frame. Ned Yost chipped in with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning and Salome drove in the final run on a double in the bottom of the eighth. The Power bullpen provided four perfect innings of relief. Wil Laureano and Joe Thatcher combined to pitch four perfect innings and did not allow a single Crawdad batter to reach base in the final four innings. Steve Garrison (2-1) allowed two runs on six hits to earn the victory, and Blair Johnson (1-3) obtained the loss. The Power are 39-29 after the win and the Crawdads fell to 32-36 with loss. Attendance for the game was 3,594. The Power will finish the three game series as well as the first half against the Crawdads Sunday evening. Hickory will start right hander Todd Redmond (5-4, 2.94) and the Power will counter with left hander Rafael Lluberes (3-3, 3.18). The first pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM (4:05 Central). West Virginia Box Score: Ten games over .500, nice job, kids -- fun team, fun first half; Scotty McKnight's box score average doesn't reflect his time spent at Brevard, where he scuffled; these effective performances from young lefty Steve Garrison are gravy -- few targeted him beyond Helena this summer... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_wvaafx_1 West Virginia Game Log: While Nate Yoho singled twice in the big seven-run 4th, Darren Ford struck out twice in the same inning... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_wvaafx_1

  17. The fourth non-drafted rookie signing we're aware of is catcher D.J. Neyens of the University of Washington, he'll begin the year in Helena: gohuskies.cstv.com/sports..._dj00.html Neyens only played in six games (one start) this season, getting seven at-bats, and was purely a backup as a junior in 2005, so this is a curious signing. Maybe a scout clearly remembered Neyens from his junior college days.

  19. Two articles within this post -- Link, text follows: milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com...p;c_id=mil Touching base with Ryan Braun By Emily A. Hanover / Special to MLB.com With the fifth-overall pick in the 2005 Draft, the Milwaukee Brewers selected sweet-swinging Ryan Braun out of the University of Miami. After a solid debut season with the Class A West Virginia Power last summer, Braun has continued his hot hitting into his 2006 campaign with the Class A Brevard County Manatees. MLB.com recently caught up with Braun, who was happy to speak about his game, his dreams of one day calling from the booth and the immense impact Yankees star Alex Rodriguez has had on the way Braun approaches the game on and off the field. The Brewers drafted you roughly a year ago. Take us back to draft day. What was it like to hear your name called? It was just an incredible feeling. It was kind of a culmination of everything I've worked for so far in my baseball career. It felt great to be rewarded for all my hard work up to that point. I was with my family, my teammates at the University of Miami, my coaches -- we were all watching the draft on the computer in my coach's office. From a Hurricane to a Power in 2005, and now in your first full professional season, how has the transition been from college to pro ball? It's definitely been different, you're playing every day. In college, you fly everywhere. In the Minor Leagues, there's a lot of long bus rides and you stay in cheap motels -- in college, you stay in pretty nice places. A lot more fast food! I think the biggest adjustment is getting used to playing every day, and adjusting to the travel schedule. Trying to eat well is difficult at times. After 37 games for the Power in 2005, you moved up the organizational ladder with many of the same teammates. How much has the familiarity with your teammates impacted your game on and off the field? I mean, it definitely contributes. I think that's something that makes it that much more enjoyable. It's great when you have that camaraderie, that team chemistry both on and off the field. The current Brewers lineup features four former first rounders: Prince Fielder, Rickie Weeks, Geoff Jenkins and Ben Sheets. As a Brewers top pick, has the success of future teammates been a factor in how you approach the game? It's encouraging. It's great to see those guys having so much success. I just strive to get where they are, but at the same time, obviously my situation is different from theirs. I just need to go out there and work hard every day and, hopefully, get to where they are at, sooner rather than later. As far as outside predictions go, do they tend to affect your game at all? A recent prediction had you in the Brewers lineup by 2008, only two years away. I want to get there as soon as possible. I want to make sure that I'm fully prepared and that I'm ready for the time that I do get there. I try not to think too much about those types of things. I just try and work hard every day, learn from what I'm doing here. I know eventually everything will fall into place for me. As a player, what do you feel are your strengthens? Weaknesses? Confidence. I have a lot of belief in my ability in all facets of the game. As far as weaknesses go, I would have to say consistency. The biggest thing I've realized is the importance of being consistent -- offensively, defensively, baserunning, your approach to the game, in everything you do -- it's important to be consistent. Who, out of former and current Major League players, would you say you most emulate your own game after? I grew up liking Alex Rodriquez a lot. I like the way he carries himself both on and off the field and he obviously has achieved a tremendous amount of success. I think people generally view him as being a good person and that is something I pride myself on as well. Ranging from tee ball to pro ball, who has been the biggest influence on your career? What's the best piece of advice you have ever been given? I would say my parents. They constantly remind me to just have fun. You're so fortunate to have the opportunity to play this game professionally, and I think when you get too caught up in having a bad day, frustrated when you're not doing well, you have to just realize the importance of having fun. It's still the same game I've played since I was a little kid. I just out there every day and appreciate the opportunity that I have. How about your own set of advice to a kid who wants to get drafted, what would you say to them? Go out there and work hard, do what you have always done. If you just go out there and work as hard as you can, and take pride in your work ethic, then I think people will appreciate your talents and you'll be rewarded for your hard work. When you hang up the cleats, what would you want fans, teammates and coaches to remember you most for? Just being a good guy who played the game the right way. I just want to go out there, work hard every day, have people appreciate the fact that I played the game the right way and worked hard every day. How about your career after the game? I don't know. I mean, I love sports, so maybe broadcasting, some type of communication involving sports, maybe something on ESPN. I don't really know, but hopefully that's a long ways away and I don't have to think too much about it. With the season under way, what do you hope to accomplish in 2006? My goal is just to work hard every day and to continue to improve, help my team win as many games as possible, in as many ways as possible. ***Link, text follows: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...;fext=.jsp Faces on the Field: Ryan Braun By Patrick Brown / Special to MLB.com Cracking the books didn't just help educate him. It helped develop him. That's a big reason why Ryan Braun believes he has turned into All-Star talent in just his first year. Braun has been selected to play in the 45th annual Florida State League All-Star Game in Lakeland, Fla., and although his numbers this season may be eye-opening, he doesn't credit his talent for bringing him this far. He credits his education. Before being drafted, school was something Braun had always taken seriously, whether it was elementary school, high school or his education at the University of Miami. Although he was drafted and signed with about a year left in college, Braun was a business management major with a minor in sports management and maintained a 3.3 grade point average. "I took a lot of pride in my schoolwork," Braun said. "A lot of athletes took college for granted, but I realized that I was getting a free education and I was very lucky, so I always took my education very seriously and always got pretty good grades." Impressive? Absolutely. But seriously, how could doing well in college help propel his baseball career? The 22-year-old credits college not only for helping him learn to balance his schedule but for demanding the discipline required to stick to a plan. Dorm life, baseball, academics and his social life competed and conspired to force Braun to master time management quickly, and the exercise helped make his transition to professional baseball much easier. "Academics instilled in me a sense of urgency and time management," Braun said. "It definitely helped me put some discipline in my life." Now, in his first season with Brevard County, Braun has already seen the lessons learned and effort made begin to pay off. In 55 games, he has hit seven home runs and driven in 36 runs. His 60 hits include 12 doubles and a triple. Those numbers got him selected to the All-Star squad, along with six of his teammates. "It's an honor, and I think it's a reflection on player development in the organization as well as the coaching staff," Braun said. "We just try to help each other out, and it's definitely an honor." While school was essential to his development, Braun has another significant driving force in his career -- post-education, that is. While teammates and coaches have had a huge impact during the first year of his professional career, his parents have continued to exert an important influence. After all, they're the ones who helped guide him through school and into his baseball career, and he's always wanted to show them how successful he can be. "They've always been very supportive and my dad always coached my teams growing up," Braun said. "I just wanted to do well and make them proud. Their support has been great for me." That support, and the discipline he developed at school, have helped Braun find his groove quickly in the Minors. Discipline leads to consistency, and whether it's during batting practice or in a game, he knows consistency is key. Add in confidence and the potent mix has helped Braun develop into a solid player. "I'm always confident in my ability," he said, "I know if I'm able to go out there and work hard every day and stay consistent in my approach and keep the same mind-frame, then I should be able to be pretty consistent." The opportunity to play in the Brewers organization has Braun excited, especially with what Milwaukee has been doing with its young players lately. "I've been extremely impressed with the entire organization since the day I was drafted," Braun said. "They've obviously had a lot of success in developing their younger players, and a lot of young players contribute at the big league level." Could he be one of those players one day? He hopes so. But he knows he needs to keep a steady mindset. Stay consistent, stay confident and continue to make progress. Braun feels he can handle that, but contemplating the endless possibilities can tax mental discipline and focus. "(Seeing) a lot of their young players contribute in the big leagues is exciting for me as well as for the rest of our prospects," Braun said. "We know if we continue to progress though they'll give us a chance." Regardless of what he's accomplished this quickly, Braun realizes he can't ever stop working on his game. Given his past, and his dedication to learning, that shouldn't be a problem. Batting .283 with 36 RBIs, Ryan Braun was selected to the FSL All-Star team.
