Link for Vinny Rottino as catcher photo while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Oklahoma can't touch Sarfate heat Pitcher works seven scoreless innings in Sounds victory By JEFF LOCKRIDGE Tennessean Staff Writer High cheese. Sounds pitcher Dennis Sarfate threw it. The RedHawks couldn't touch it. Sarfate worked seven scoreless innings and the Sounds stayed hot, beating Oklahoma 3-0 on Friday before a crowd of 7,770 at Greer Stadium. It was Nashville's fourth shutout win this season and fifth victory in six games. "Sometimes you stick with what works, and my fastball was working tonight," Sarfate said. "I throw in the mid-to-upper 90s, so if I can get ahead it's going to be a long night for the opposing team." The Sounds host the RedHawks in a doubleheader at 6 tonight. The second of two seven-inning games will begin 20 minutes after the first concludes. Nashville native R.A. Dickey is slated to start the first game for Oklahoma. Starting pitching has been a strong suit for the Sounds this week. Sarfate (6-2) continued that trend after a rocky start. His first eight pitches were balls, but he escaped the first-inning jam when right fielder Nelson Cruz threw out Freddy Guzman at the plate. Sarfate stranded two RedHawks in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings by getting the final batter of each frame to chase a high fastball. He finished with six strikeouts. Alec Zumwalt worked the ninth for his fifth save. Tony Gwynn laced a bases-loaded single to center field off starter Nick Masset in the third, scoring Zach Sorensen and Jermaine Clark to make it 2-0. Sorensen walked, Clark singled and Chris Barnwell dropped down a bunt hit to start the rally. The Sounds added a run in the fourth when Sorensen delivered the last of three singles in the inning to plate Cruz. "We're doing a good job of getting runners on, moving them over and getting them in," Gwynn said. "And as usual, we're getting great pitching." ***Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Dickey's return set for tonight at Greer By JEFF LOCKRIDGE Tennessean Staff Writer Nashville native R.A. Dickey is scheduled to be activated from the disabled list by Oklahoma and start the first game of a doubleheader against the Sounds at 6 tonight at Greer Stadium. The former Montgomery Bell Academy and Tennessee standout has a 2-4 record in eight appearances for the RedHawks this season. Dickey has been on the DL all but two days since May 18, his latest stint dating back to May 27. He has been nursing a strained right shoulder. "He threw a simulated game in Memphis and has been given the go-ahead," RedHawks Manager Mike Boulanger said. "R.A. is a great person and everybody in the organization loves him. He's worked his butt off to get back." Dickey, who has become primarily a knuckleball pitcher, started the year with the Texas Rangers but was optioned to the RedHawks after surrendering seven runs to Detroit in his first start April 6. During the 2003 and '04 seasons, Dickey logged 221 innings with the Rangers and won 15 games. "As far as I know, he's 100 percent now," said RedHawks pitching coach Andy Hawkins, who added Dickey will be on a pitch count tonight. "We're just trying to get him back on the mound." Guzman injured: RedHawks leadoff man Freddy Guzman left Friday's game after the second inning due to a laceration on his buttocks. Guzman sustained the injury sliding into home plate while trying to score from third on a fly out during the first inning. He was thrown out by right fielder Nelson Cruz. Cooled off: Prior to the Sounds' 3-0 win Friday, the RedHawks had been red hot with seven wins in their last eight games. Oklahoma remains an impressive 14-4 since May 29 but has now lost seven of eight to Nashville this season. Man in the mask: Vinny Rottino, a utility player used primarily at third base by the Sounds this season, made his third start at catcher and first at home Friday. Career night: Graham Koonce came within one RBI of the Sounds' single-game record when he drove in all six runs in a 6-2 win over Omaha on Thursday. Four Sounds have driven in seven runs in game. The latest to do it was Humberto Cota (Pirates' system) in 2002. Drew Denson had seven RBIs on two separate occasions in 1993. Fireworks show: There will be a fireworks show following the second game of tonight's doubleheader. -

Final: Nashville 3, Oklahoma (Rangers) 0 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Dennis Sarfate photo, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2006 Sarfate, Sounds Shut Out RedHawks, 3-0 NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Right-hander Dennis Sarfate combined with a pair of relievers on a seven-hit shutout as the Nashville Sounds blanked the Oklahoma RedHawks, 3-0, in front of 7,770 fans on Friday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series. The win was the third in a row and fifth in the last six contests for Nashville (38-30), which picked up its fourth shutout victory of the year. Sarfate (6-2) turned in his fifth quality start of the year in recording his fourth consecutive victorious outing and team-best sixth victory overall. The right-hander allowed five hits over seven scoreless innings, walking four and striking out six batters in his 104-pitch effort. Chris Demaria worked a scoreless eighth and Alec Zumwalt put up a goose egg in the ninth to complete the shutout and notch his fifth save of the year, pulling into a tie for the team lead. The Sounds grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on Tony Gwynn?s bases-loaded two-run single to center off Oklahoma starter Nick Masset that brought in Zach Sorensen and Jermaine Clark. Nashville upped the advantage to 3-0 in the fourth when Sorensen plated Nelson Cruz with a one-out RBI single to center. Oklahoma?s best scoring opportunity came in the top of the first inning when Freddy Guzman led off the game with a walk, stole his Pacific Coast League-leading 23rd base of the year, and moved to third on a flyout before being thrown out at the plate by Cruz from right field while attempting to score on a fly ball off the bat of former Sound Adam Hyzdu. AUDIO: Nelson Cruz Erases Runner At Plate -- Great call, by the way... www.nashvillesounds.com/a...206-16.wma The RedHawks also put runners on third in the fifth and sixth frames but Sarfate ended both innings with strikeouts. Chris Barnwell paced the Sounds? offense with a 2-for-3 effort, the club?s lone multiple-hit effort on the evening. Masset (1-4) worked all eight innings for Oklahoma but took the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out six batters. The teams continue the series with a 6 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday evening as the clubs play a pair of seven-inning games. Right-hander Justin Lehr (1-2, 4.32) will start the opener for the Sounds to face Nashville native R.A. Dickey (2-4, 7.02) for the RedHawks. Sounds knuckleballer Jared Fernandez (1-1, 3.28) will man the bump in the nightcap and take on Oklahoma southpaw Kevin Walker (4-3, 3.90). Nashville Box Score: Vinny Rottino your catcher again; Dave Krynzel at .253 (.758 OPS, 46 K's in 150 AB's); Chris Barnwell had better be named to the PCL All-Star team... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...a_nasaaa_1 Nashville Game Log: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...a_nasaaa_1 -

Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 Toronto's loss becomes West Tenn's major gain Former Blue Jays prospect helps hand Stars another loss By BRAD SHEPARD For The Huntsville Times This is the kind of player Toronto was hoping for when it made Miguel Negron the 18th person taken in the 2000 draft. That is, a guy who could turn the game's momentum with his hitting and turn Skydome's turf into a track. Instead - and unfortunately for the Huntsville Stars - Negron's pro career detoured. He was released by the Blue Jays organization in mid-May, picked up by the Chicago Cubs and assigned to West Tenn. Now, he's terrorizing the Southern League and, most recently, the Stars. On Friday, Negron played a prominent role in a Diamond Jaxx win for the fourth time in five games as West Tenn waltzed 7-3 in front of an announced crowd of 6,766 at Joe Davis Stadium. "This is a new start for me now with the Cubs," said Negron, whose Underarmor still has the Blue Jays' logo on it. "I was with the Blue Jays for six years, and I'm not saying I put up great numbers, but they didn't give me opportunities. "I know you may be here today and gone tomorrow." The way Negron is playing, he may be gone to Triple-A tomorrow. So far in the series, Negron is 6-for-16 with seven RBIs. The 23-year-old had another hit Friday and drove in three runs, helping the Diamond Jaxx (42-27) build a 6-2 lead. Huntsville had the chance for a seventh-inning rally as Callix Crabbe led off with a walk and scored. The bases were loaded with nobody out, but Lou Palmisano lined out weakly to shortstop. Adam Heether and Ozzie Chavez followed with strikeouts, and the Stars lost for the 24th time in 28 games. They left 12 men on base. "You've got to go up there and make the adjustments to be hitters," Stars manager Don Money said. "I just sit down there and look at it day after day. I look at the lineup and mix and match, but we're just not getting it done." Negron is. On Tuesday, he hit a 10th-inning sacrifice fly in a 1-0 win. In Thursday's doubleheader, he drove in three runs in a 4-1 win then scored the first run in West Tenn's nightcap victory. He was the catalyst again Friday. Since coming over from Toronto's system May 19, he's hitting around .400. "He's played outstanding," West Tenn manager Pat Listach said. "He's definitely a prospect. We didn't know him from Adam when we got him." The Stars (24-44) are trying to pick up the pieces before the second half. "It's tough to lose this many games in a half when your record was 20-20," Money said. -

Final: West Tenn (Cubs) 7, Huntsville 3 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...newsId=880 Negron Continues to Nail Stars' Pitching Miguel Negron knocked in three runs and Sean Gallagher was victorious in his double-A debut, as West Tenn kept its? faint playoff hopes alive with a 7-3 victory over Huntsville Friday night in front of 6,766 at Joe Davis Stadium. The Diamond Jaxx improved to 42-27 overall and 24-10 on the road and remained a game and a half behind Chattanooga for the North Division lead, while the Stars dropped to 24-44 on the season and 10-23 at home. West Tenn needs to win its final game Saturday and have the Lookouts lose their last two games of the half to Tennessee to force a tie for the top spot. Negron delivered a two-out, two-run double in the first inning to stake the visitors to the early lead. The Stars got one run back in the second inning against Gallagher on a sacrifice fly by Ozzie Chavez that scored Lou Palmisano to trim the lead to 2-1.The run was the first the home side had scored in 16 2/3 innings. The Diamond Jaxx answered right back in the third inning when Gary Cates scored on a Brian Dopirak sacrifice fly and Stars? starter Jeff Housman uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Richard Lewis to score. Lewis knocked in a run with a base hit in the fifth and Negron capped West Tenn?s third two-run inning of the night with a sacrifice fly. He has driven in 12 runs since joining the Diamond Jaxx, 11 of which have come against the Stars. Huntsville got a run back in the fifth against Gallagher on a double by Ron Acuna that scored Steve Moss to make it 6-2, but Drew Anderson was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the frame. Gallagher, 4-0 in 13 starts in the Florida State League, gave up five hits, walked four and fanned five. Housman was charged with the loss after allowing a season-high six runs on seven hits and a walk. He struck out five and remains winless since April 19. Jon Mueller worked a scoreless sixth inning before giving up a run-scoring single to Brad Nelson in the seventh that cut the lead to 6-3. Acuna walked to load the bases and Mueller was replaced by southpaw Carlos Vasquez, making his second appearance of the series. Lou Palmisano popped out to shortstop for the first out and Adam Heether and Chavez fanned to end the threat and the inning. Vasquez kept the Stars off the board in the eighth and ninth innings to earn his first save of the season. The series concludes on Saturday night with coverage of the game beginning at 6:50 p.m. central time. Stars? baseball can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. Link while active, text follows: www.wvgazette.com/section.../200606173 Power executes in 13-7 win over Hickory By Mike Whiteford Charleston Gazette Staff writer From his third-base coaching box, Power manager Mike Guerrero sensed an early hit-and-run opportunity and flashed the signal without hesitation. What followed was a bit of hit-and-run perfection that John McGraw might have diagrammed. Angel Salome poked an opposite-field single to right, zipping the ball through the hole vacated by the second baseman. It sent Lorenzo Cain to third and fulfilled Guerrero?s faith in a Power offense that has been quite productive of late. The hit-and-run nullified what would have been an inning-ending double play and led to a four-run first inning. From there, the Power continued to rough up Hickory pitching en route to a 13-7 victory over the Crawdads Friday night at Appalachian Power Park. A lively crowd of 6,224, the third-largest of the season, attended. Since a seven-game winning streak that began May 28, the Power has won 15 of 20 and, in an encouraging but odd statistical tidbit, the team leads the South Atlantic League with a .277 batting average but no Power player ranks among the SAL?s top 10. After falling behind 5-0 in the top of the first, the Power pecked away, taking the lead for good in the fifth inning and finishing with 17 hits. ?The other team can have 20 runs, and we?re going to come back,?? said Salome, who ranks second in the league with 52 RBIs. ?That?s what you have to expect about us.?? Pitching coach John Curtis has his own term for it. ?It?s offensive inevitability,?? said Curtis. ?We?re just waiting for this to happen. This is a pretty special bunch. We know that no lead is too big.?? On a team that finds heroes up and down the lineup, Tony Festa on Friday contributed six RBIs, including a single that produced the tying run in the third inning and a two-run double in the fifth that gave the Power a 7-5 lead, a lead it would never relinquish. In the fifth, in fact, Guerrero signaled Festa to bunt with runners on first and second and, after a failed bunt attempt, Festa launched his two-run double into the left-center gap. ?Mike took the bunt sign off on the second pitch,?? said Festa, ?and when the defense thinks you?re bunting, you know you?re going to get a fastball. So I was more aggressive. I got a fastball, and it was a good pitch to hit because I think [Hickory] thought I was perhaps bunting. It worked in my favor. I credit Mike for giving me the green light. He?s aggressive and therefore we?re pretty aggressive.?? Festa added another two-run double in the sixth and a third double that brought home one run in a three-run eighth inning. Festa was 4-for-4 for the night. ?It?s different guys having big games,?? he said. ?It?s always somebody picking the team up.?? Kevin Roberts, who had worked in the rotation all season, came out of the bullpen in the first inning to relieve starter Ryan Marion and pitched five innings of shutout ball for the victory. Dane Renkert picked up the final five outs for the save. POWER POINTS: The Power and Crawdads will play tonight and close out the season?s first half with a 5:05 game (4:05 Central) Sunday evening....Entering Friday?s game, the Power was averaging 3,613 fans a game and was on a pace to exceed last year?s season attendance. Ryan Crew of the West Virginia Power (left) was put out on a rundown play when he was tagged by Hickory?s Mike McCuistion. Final: West Virginia 13, Hickory (Pirates) 7 West Virginia Site Game Summary: Tony Festa reached base in all five of his trips to the plate in Friday night's game against the Hickory Crawdads at Appalachian Power Park. Festa went four for four with three doubles and he knocked in six runs as the Power erased a 5-0 deficit to beat the Crawdads 13-7. The Crawdads scored five times in the first inning. John Santiago started the scoring with a two-run homer. Brad Corley brought in the next run on a double, Steve Lerud grounded into a double play scoring the fourth run and James Boone completed the five-run frame with an RBI single. The Power scored four times in the bottom of the first to come within a run. Mat Gamel knocked in the first run on a single, Ned Yost scored Angel Salome on an RBI groundout and Mike Bell plated the final two runs on a double. The Power tied the game in the third inning on Festa's RBI single. In the fifth inning the Power scored three runs to take the lead and never looked back. Festa brought in the first two runs on a double and Ryan Crew knocked in the final run on a sacrifice fly. Festa struck again in the sixth inning with another two-run double to give the Power a 10-5 lead. Andrew McCutchen doubled and scored on Crew's error in the seventh inning and Hickory plated their final run on Tony Mansolino's RBI single in the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth the Power added three insurance runs. Gamel scored on Mike McCuistion's errant throw from first base, Festa drove in a run on his third double of the game and Crew drove Festa in on an RBI double. Kevin Roberts (4-7) pitched five scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the victory, Dane Renkert (5) earned the save, and Derek Antelo (2-3) obtained the loss. The Power are 38-29 after the win and the Crawdads fell to 32-25 with loss. The Power will continue the three game series against the Crawdads Saturday night. Hickory will start right hander Blair Johnson (1-2, 4.39) and the Power will counter with left hander Steve Garrison (1-1, 4.19). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). West Virginia Box Score: RHP Ryan Marion fails to retire a batter in the first inning -- the former 8th round pick (2002) has had a tough go of it. The list of recent Brewer top 10 pitching draft picks who failed to even advance past A-ball is quite long, I think I'll prepare a home page feature on that subject some time; Kevin Roberts to the rescue -- it'd be great to see that kind of performance more often from him; Darren Ford caught stealing for the 10th time (32 SB's); Mat Gamel breaks a mini-slump in a huge way; cheers to Tony Festa, but not to rain on his big night (I guess I am), he'll be 26 years old in December -- he had better be raking in low-A... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_wvaafx_1 West Virginia Game Log: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_wvaafx_1 -

From Buck Rogers, Manatees GM (I had it right this morning): Here's the only way the Manatees can clinch a first half championship: -the Palm Beach Cardinals MUST LOSE AT LEAST ONE of their three remaining games (home against the Daytona Cubs) -the Brevard County Manatees MUST WIN all three games against the St Lucie Mets (at St Lucie on Monday and Tuesday, at home on Wednesday) If that happens the final first half standings will be as shown below and, based on the fact that the Manatees have lost games off the schedule due to rain outs, the 'Tees would edge the Palm Beach Cardinals by 4/1000ths of a percent (.561 to .557) and secure a post-season playoff berth in September. EASTERN DIVISION 1st HALF RECORD Brevard County Manatees 37 29 .561 --- Palm Beach Cardinals 39 31 .557 --- St Lucie Mets 38 32 .543 1.0 That's it, probably easier said than done, and we squandered an excellent chance the last two games by dropping close games to the Daytona Cubs. If we had won both of the last two games we'd be one out of first place with the Mets and needing to win only two of three, but that's not the way the script was written. So now the stage is set, we have to take care of our own business and hope for the Daytona Cubs to knock off the Palm Beach Cardinals at least once during the three game series. The Cards, by the way, are riding an eight-game winning streak and have no thoughts of losing anything to the Cubs at home at Roger Dean Stadium. Daytona's coaching staff told me yesterday that they will win at least one of the three just to guarantee themselves a .500 record, and after a horrific 0-6 start to the season, the Cubs look at that as a great way to recover and begin the 2nd half anew. -

I have been unable to get the Power broadcast (internet) for about the last week or so. It has always worked in the past. I was wondering if anyone else was having similar problems, or had any suggestions. We have been listening via the opposing teams' broadcast, but it is always nicer to listen to Andy. I experienced the same thing earlier this week, so I've shot off an email to Andy Barch as well as Andy Milovich, the Power GM.

Link while active, text follows: www.helenair.com/articles...506_01.txt New Brewers come to town By TOM COTTON - IR Sports Editor Helena?s boys of summer are filtering back into town. The Helena Brewers have 20 players currently on their roster and have started mini-camp in preparation for the season opener Tuesday against Missoula. ?Right now the difference in what has happened from the last couple of years is right now there are fewer players out of the gate,? said Steve Wendt, director of broadcasting and public relations for the Brewers. ?Right now the term mini is appropriate.? Wendt said the roster should grow to 30 players before the first game. Only a few of the players on the current roster have played in Helena before ? right-handed pitcher Christopher Jean, left-handed pitcher Brandon Parillo and outfielder Stephen Chapman. Jean started in three games last season, logging 32 innings of work. He struck out 16 in that span. Parillo had a successful stint in Helena last year, posting a 2-1 record and a 2.14 ERA in 12 games. Chapman cracked six home runs in 54 games last season and drove in 25 runs. That trio will be complmented by a host of high-round draft picks. One name to watch will be Zach Clem, an 11th-round draft pick from the University of Washington. Wendt said he displayed good power during batting practice on Tuesday. Chris Errecart, a fifth round draft pick from the University of California-Berkley will join the team today. The outfielder hit eight home runs and drove in 35 runs in 2005 for the Bears. Another name to watch will be Michael McLendon, a 10th-round draft pick from Seminole Community College in Florida. McClendon posted an 11-1 record in the 2005 season and he struck out 72.

Another non-drafted free agent signed: Also heading to the Pioneer League is University of Tampa catcher J.R. Hopf, a former Plant High standout who hit .400 while catching for the Spartans. UT officials confirmed Hopf was signed by the Brewers as an undrafted free agent, and will play for the Helena (Mont.) Brewers. Profile Link (Adobe format): www.utampa.edu/athletics/...l/hopf.pdf Lots of pitchers in Maryvale, and plenty of help catching them signed as of late -- the Brewers now have numbers at the position for the two rookie teams, almost too many in numbers, we'll see who will emerge...

Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/sports/huntsvi...amp;coll=1 Stars' offense vanishes again Huntsville scoreless in 14 innings and loses doubleheader By BRAD SHEPARD For The Huntsville Times Two weeks ago, the Huntsville Stars were mired in a franchise-worst 13-game losing streak when rain suspended their June 1 game against West Tenn. Unfortunately for the Stars, when that game resumed Thursday night after what amounted to a 334-hour, 5-minute rain delay, some of the leftover horror of that swoon followed. Though Huntsville inherited a one-run lead when the game resumed in the top of the third, the Stars quickly gave it away in a 4-1 nine-inning loss. The Stars failed to score a run in any of the 14 innings played Thursday, getting blown out 9-0 in the seven-inning nightcap of the doubleheader in front of an announced crowd of 1,682 at Joe Davis Stadium. So much for any positive carryover from Wednesday's 12-0 win. In what has been the story of Huntsville's first half, any momentum melts quicker than an ice cream cone at a day game. With the Stars (24-43) clinging to a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning of the opener, West Tenn's Miguel Negron hit a two-out, two-strike double off Travis Phelps that kicked up chalk on the right-field line and drove in all three teammates on base. The Stars didn't even pose a second-game scoring threat until the bottom of the sixth when J.C. Boscan struck out to end the inning with runners on first and third. Thursday was groan-inducing for any Stars who thought Wednesday could be a fresh start. Instead, it only set up another disappointing chapter. On Wednesday, for example, Jeff Eure drilled a home run and drove in four runs to ignite an offensive onslaught normally unseen by Joe Davis patrons this season. On Thursday, the best - or worst - Eure could muster during his pinch-hit appearance in the ninth inning was a sharp ground ball into the Stars dugout that glanced off reliever Russ Rohlicek's back. Rohlicek was OK. Huntsville's offense isn't. At least, not yet. The only run Huntsville had to show for its two games Thursday came back on June 1, and was driven in by pitcher Jeff Housman. Negron's night easily trumped that hit with two solid games. Wednesday's loss devastated West Tenn, which entered Thursday night two games behind first-place Chattanooga in the Southern League North Division with four to play. The Diamond Jaxx got two much needed wins to keep any hope alive. That hope is slim, however. The Lookouts won again Thursday, and West Tenn is 1 1/2 games back with two games to play.

No day games Friday -- because the Friday Link Report won't kick off until later Friday afternoon, we'll post updated standings for you here: Manatees will need to sweep three games against St. Lucie after the All-Star Break and get some help because a hot Palm Beach club has snuck into second place; very nice first half for the Power finds them in 2nd place at the moment, unfortunately not enough for a first-half crown; no split-season in AAA; Huntsville, 0-0 is coming soon -- we always said that with High Desert, and then the Mavericks would immediately tank every second half as well... Final: Daytona (Cubs) 2, Brevard County 0, ten innings Brevard County Site Game Summary: Cubs outlast Manatees Jeff Culpepper's RBI single in the 10th inning snapped a scoreless tie as visiting Daytona blanked Brevard County, 2-0, on Thursday afternoon. Culpepper's single was just the Cubs' fourth hit of the ballgame. Nate Spears led off the decisive 10th with a single and advanced to second on Joseph Simokaitis' sacrifice bunt. After Sam Fuld drew a walk, Culpepper singled to right to plate Spears. After a Brevard County pitching change, Jake Fox singled to bring home Fuld with an insurance run. Adalberto Mendez (3-0) earned the win, striking out four over two perfect innings. Roberto Sotolongo started the game for the Cubs (34-33) and allowed just one hit over four shutout frames. It was the 23-year-old Cuban's Daytona debut and his first start in nine appearances this season. Matt Weber allowed one hit over four scoreless relief innings. The trio fanned 13. Jeremy Lewis (1-3) was charged with both 10th-inning runs and took the loss, while Luis Pena allowed Fox's RBI single before inducing Matt Craig to ground into an inning-ending double play. The Manatees (34-29) wasted a dominating outing from starter Mark Rogers, who did not allow a hit until Culpepper singled with two outs in the sixth inning. The 20-year-old fanned 10 for the second time in as many starts and has 84 strikeouts in 59 innings. -- Benjamin Hill/MLB.com Brevard County Box Score: Two golden sombreros in one game -- Charlie Fermaint and Ryan Phillips; sure would be nice if Ryan Braun were dominating this league -- he isn't... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...a_breafa_1 Brevard County Game Log: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...a_breafa_1

Final: West Tenn (Cubs) 4, Huntsville 1, completion of June 1st suspended game Final: West Tenn (Cubs) 9, Huntsville 0, regularly scheduled game, scheduled for seven innings Huntsville Site Game Summaries: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...newsId=878 Stars Swept by Diamond Jaxx Chris Shaver tossed a complete game shutout and Scott Moore capped a seven-run seventh inning rally with a home run, as West Tenn shutout Huntsville 9-0 in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The Diamond Jaxx came from behind to win the opener 4-1 to complete the game that was suspended on June 1st and improved to 41-27 to move to within a game and a half of North Division leading Chattanooga, while the Stars dropped to 24-43 on the season and 10-22 at home. Nic Jackson?s bases loaded, bases clearing triple in the seventh extended the visitors lead to 6-0 and chased reliever Russ Rohlicek from the game. Matt Yeatman took over and yielded a run-scoring single to Brandon Sing and Moore?s tenth home run of the season on a ball that cleared all three tiers of signage in right field. Rohlicek was charged with six runs on five hits over an inning and a third against his former mates. Miguel Negron led off the fifth inning against starter Steve Bray with a double, moved to third base on a Jose Reyes sacrifice bunt, stayed there when Gary Cates was intentionally passed and scored on a squeeze bunt by Shaver, who knocked in his second run of the year to give the Diamond Jaxx a 1-0 lead. Bray was charged with the loss after allowing one run on five hits and two walks in the first start of his career. Shaver allowed five hits, walked three and fanned five to earn his fourth win of the season and second over the Stars, who suffered their worst defeat of the year. The West Tenn southpaw permitted only J.C. Boscan in the fifth and Jeff Eure in the sixth to reach third base. Huntsville was shutout for a ninth time this season and for the sevehth time at home. Negron?s three-run double in the sixth inning in the first game gave the Diamond Jaxx a 3-1 lead against Travis Phelps, who took over for starter Jeff Housman when play resumed after a two-week delay. Negron would score on the back end of a double steal later in the inning to account for the inning's final run. Phelps had retired the first ten batters he faced before allowing the four runs in the sixth and suffered his fourth loss. Juan Mateo blanked the Stars over four innings in relief to earn his fourth win of the year. Rocky Cherry tossed two scoreless frames and Clay Rapada retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his league-best 20th save. The loss extended the Stars? losing streak to 14, one shy of the league record, and also pushed their home losing streak to 14, both the worst marks in franchise history. The series continues on Friday night with southpaw Jeff Housman starting for Huntsville against Diamond Jaxx right-hander Sean Gallagher. Link while active, text follows: www.nashvillecitypaper.co...s_id=50493 Helling, Koonce carry Sounds to victory By Nate Rau, Nashville City Paper Sports Correspondent Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Rick Helling sparkled in his rehab start Thursday night against Omaha and Graham Koonce drove in every Nashville run to lead the Sounds to a 6-2 victory over the Royals in front of 7,062 fans at Greer Stadium. The 35-year-old Helling, making his second rehab start for the Sounds, went seven innings and allowed one run on just three hits. Helling, who has been on the disabled list since April because of an elbow injury, faced the minimum number of batters (18) through the first six innings. He ran into trouble in the seventh when a pair of doubles gave the Royals (26-41) their first run. This figures to be Helling?s final start before he rejoins the Brewers. ?He was getting ahead on batters and he was spotting his pitches, especially his fastball and his cutter,? said Sounds catcher Mike Rivera, who shared the battery with Helling. ?It was good for him, especially since he was on a pitch count [of 90].? Helling was receiving extended treatment in the training room after the game and was unavailable for comment. ?He looked really sharp,? Sounds manager Frank Kremblas said. Nashville couldn?t figure out Omaha starter J.P Howell, who held the team scoreless through four innings. But Howell was on a pitch count of 60, so he came out after that and the Sounds took advantage of the Omaha bullpen. Koonce hit a sixth-inning grand slam that landed onto Chestnut Street to give the Sounds their first four runs. He added another home run in the eighth, a two-run blast giving him his second two-homer game of the season. Koonce?s six RBIs are one shy of the team record. ?It looks like he?s coming around a little bit,? Kremblas said of Koonce, who was hitting .200 before going 3-for-3 on Thursday. ?His bat speed looks a little bit better. He did good.? Happy Father?s Day, Sounds fans In honor of Father?s Day, fans who attend Sunday?s game against Oklahoma will receive a voucher for a free TiVo unit ? which has a retail value of $220. Additionally, up to ten TiVo units, which are ready for usage, will be given away during the game. For more information on the promotion visit tivo.com/baseball.

Both benefited the Sounds. Helling looked sharp for four members of the Milwaukee Brewers front office who were in town Thursday night and Koonce blasted two home runs, including a grand slam, in a 6-2 win over the Omaha Royals before a crowd of 7,062 at Greer Stadium. "I got the good part of the bat on it," said Koonce, who has five homers this season. "I wasn't trying to do too much. Some nights this kind of thing happens." The Sounds open a three-day, four-game home series against the Oklahoma RedHawks at 7 tonight. Making his second of two scheduled rehab starts with the Sounds, Helling (1-0) faced the minimum number of batters through six innings and left after seven, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out five. Helling, 35, could come off the Brewers' 60-day disabled list for a sprained right elbow at any time and rejoin Milwaukee. Brewers Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Melvin was among those who watched Helling's start. "He was aggressive with his fastball and getting ahead of the hitters," catcher Mike Rivera said. "He was using his cutter better than last time. That was a key." Koonce, who finished 3-for-3 with six RBIs, provided all the support his pitcher needed with a towering grand slam over the right-field wall off Omaha reliever Donovan Osborne to snap a scoreless tie with two outs in the sixth. He added a two-run shot in the eighth. "He hit it well," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said. "Those two-out RBIs are very big." WHAT THEY SAID: "(Koonce) is getting a little more into the swing of things. It takes time to get things going." ? Kremblas ***Link while active, text follows: Get Jonah bobbleheads tonight By JEFF LOCKRIDGE Tennessean Staff Writer The Sounds' game against Oklahoma at 7 tonight at Greer Stadium includes another biblical bobblehead giveaway. The latest rendition of the popular Purity Faith Night series features a bobblehead of Jonah to the first 2,000 fans through the turnstiles. Gates open at 5:30. The pregame Faith Night concert main act is the Peasall Sisters, a trio of siblings who made their national debut on the Grammy-winning soundtrack of the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" 21 questions: The Sounds snapped a streak Thursday when catcher Mike Rivera threw out Omaha's Kerry Robinson trying to steal third in the top of the first inning. The previous 21 baserunners who attempted to steal on the Sounds were successful, dating back to May 31. Robinson's out also stymied a potential Royals rally after he had reached second on a hit and an error with nobody out. Cruzin' zone: Sounds outfielder/designated hitter Nelson Cruz continues to put up big numbers in June. After having an 11-game hit streak snapped Tuesday, Cruz went 2-for-3 Wednesday to improve his batting average for the month to .390 (16-for-41). Cruz entered Thursday's game among the top five hitters in the PCL in home runs (14), RBIs (49) and runs scored (46). He went 1-for-4 Thursday. Quick rise: Omaha pitcher J.P. Howell, who started Thursday vs. the Sounds, enjoyed the second-fastest rise to the majors in Kansas City Royals organization history in 2005 after being taken 31st in the 2004 draft out of the University of Texas. Only Bo Jackson made a quicker trip through the ranks. RedHawk blues: The Oklahoma RedHawks open the third of four season series with the Sounds tonight, and they'll be hoping to improve on past results. Nashville has won six of seven games between the clubs, including a four-game sweep on April 14-17 at Greer Stadium.

Final: Nashville 6, Omaha (Royals) 2 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Rick Helling photo, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2005 Helling, Koonce Lead Sounds Past Royals NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Rehabbing pitcher Rick Helling twirled seven strong innings and Graham Koonce belted two home runs, including a grand slam, to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 6-2 victory over the division-rival Omaha Royals in front of 7,062 fans on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium in the finale of a four-game series. With the victory, Nashville (37-30) notched its sixth winning home series in nine Greer Stadium sets after defeating Omaha in three of four this week. The Sounds are 24-12 at home this season. Helling (1-0) was impressive in his second rehab start for Nashville as he recovers from a right elbow sprain. He allowed a game-opening single to Kerry Robinson, who finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, then retired 17 consecutive batters before allowing a Robinson two-bagger to lead off the seventh. Helling allowed one run on three hits and struck out five over seven innings of work. He threw 83 pitches, 53 for strikes. The Milwaukee Brewers had several key baseball operations staff members in attendance to watch Helling?s rehab outing: Executive Vice President & General Manager Doug Melvin; Assistant General Manager Gord Ash; Jack Zduriencik, Special Assistant To The G.M. / Director of Amateur Scouting; and Dan O?Brien, Special Assistant To The G.M. Sounds first baseman Graham Koonce, who drove in all six Nashville runs on the evening, broke a scoreless tie in a big way in the bottom of the sixth inning. The left-handed slugger belted a mammoth grand slam to right field off Royals reliever Donovan Osborne to put Nashville in front by a 4-0 margin. Tony Gwynn (double), Dave Krynzel (walk), and Brent Abernathy (hit by pitch) scored on the slam. AUDIO: Graham Koonce's Grand Slam -- www.nashvillesounds.com/a...206-15.wma The grand slam was Nashville?s fourth of the year and second of this series. Vinny Rottino belted a grannie in Monday?s opener against Omaha. Omaha got on the board in the top of the seventh when Robinson led off with a double and scored two batters later on a Ruben Gotay RBI bloop double to right off Helling. Koonce, who finished with a personal season-high three hits to go along with his Sounds season-high six RBIs, slammed his second longball of the evening in the bottom of the eighth, a two-run shot off Joe Nelson. Nelson Cruz, who had legged out his team-leading 17th double of the season one batter earlier, scored on the blast, Koonce?s fifth of the year. The two-homer contest was Koonce?s second of the season and the Sounds? fifth multiple-homer effort of the campaign. Koonce?s six RBIs were one shy of the Nashville single-game record. Omaha closed out the evening?s scoring with a run against reliever Chris Mabeus in the ninth. Alejandro Prieto singled before Robinson ripped his second two-bagger of the evening to put runners on second and third with no outs. Chris Clapinski?s sacrifice fly brought in Prieto to make the score 6-2 before Mabeus retired Ruben Gotay and Aaron Guiel to end the contest. Royals reliever Shane Loux (0-3) took the loss after loading the bases before Osborne surrendered Koonce?s grand slam. The right-hander gave up three runs in his 1 2/3 frames. Omaha starter J.P. Howell matched Helling?s strong effort early on, allowing one hit and striking out five batters over four scoreless innings before being removed from the contest due to a pitch count. The Sounds continue their homestand on Friday evening by welcoming the Oklahoma RedHawks (AAA-Rangers) to town for a four-game, three-day series that includes a doubleheader on Saturday. Right-hander Dennis Sarfate (5-2, 2.85), a winner in his last three starts, takes the hill for Nashville in Friday?s 7 p.m. series opener. Oklahoma will counter with right-hander Nick Masset (1-3, 7.50). Link while active, text follows: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...p;lid=l116 Decorated veteran Helling takes hill tonight for Sounds By Nate Rau, Nashville City Paper Sports Correspondent You could count on one hand the number of players to put on a Nashville Sounds uniform who had careers as accomplished as Rick Helling. After all, how many former Sounds can lay claim to a 20-win season in the big leagues, two World Series championship rings and have been members of a United States Olympic team? Helling can. The hard-throwing right-hander won 20 games in 1998 with the Texas Rangers, has two rings as a member of the Florida Marlins and pitched for the U.S. at the 1992 Games in Barcelona. Yet of all his achievements and accolades, Helling said perhaps his proudest accomplishment took place in 2005. That?s when he overcame a career-threatening elbow injury, earned his way back to the big leagues as a member of the Sounds, then had one of his most-efficient seasons in his 14-year career. Helling is on rehab assignment from Milwaukee and takes the mound tonight when the Sounds take on Omaha at Greer Stadium. Helling was a non-roster invitee last spring for the Brewers. He found his way onto the Sounds opening day roster, then pitched well enough to earn a promotion. Helling went 3-1 with a 2.39 ERA last season in a variety of roles for Milwaukee. ?Up until I hurt my elbow [on April 16], the last year and a half is as good as I?ve ever thrown the ball in my entire career,? Helling said. ?That goes all the way back to when I was 20 years old. That?s the thing that made me the [proudest] about last year. I had to come down here to Nashville to pitch and prove to people I could still do it.? Over the past two seasons in the Brewers organization, Helling has familiarized himself with Milwaukee?s best pitching prospects like Ben Hendrickson, Dana Eveland, Zach Jackson and Dennis Sarfate. All but Sarfate have been up this season thanks to injuries to Helling, Tomo Ohka and Ben Sheets. Only Jackson has had any degree of success so far, but Helling said all are certainly capable. ?The thing that?s happened this year is a lot of guys have gotten an opportunity and unfortunately most of those guys haven?t made the most of it,? Helling said. ?The potential is definitely there and the stuff?s there. They?re all good enough to pitch in the big leagues, it?s just a matter of the difference between big leagues and Triple-A is just consistency.? Helling said he?s happy to give advice when the younger players seek him out, but his top priority now is prolonging his own career. Tonight figures to be his last rehab start before he?s promoted, and Helling said the plan is to just keep doing what he?s always done on the mound. ?People tell me I?m the most competitive guy they?ve ever met,? Helling said. ?My competitive fire and the fact that I?m still able to do it on the big league level is what [keeps me going]. It?s getting harder now because I have three kids so it?s harder being away from home. ?As long as I can keep getting guys out in the big leagues and still have that competitive fire in me, I?ll keep going out there as long as someone wants to give me the ball.?

Link while active, text follows: www.herald-mail.com/?modu...ormat=html Suns blow chances in 6-2 loss by BOB PARASILITI bobp@herald-mail.com The Hagerstown Suns have been forced to realize the errors of their ways. On Wednesday, the reality of it all was the Suns' errors leading to extra Power chances - and three unearned runs - and missed offensive opportunities costing Hagerstown runs. Reality bites. And it's sinking its teeth into the Suns as a shaky fifth inning led to three West Virginia runs - two unearned - to pace the Power to a 6-2 victory. The Suns (25-41) fell deeper into last place in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division with a third straight loss. The most telling numbers thus far might be Hagerstown's 108 errors in 66 games - including three last night - while the offense is hitting just .210 and .180 after two outs with runners in scoring position - a situation where the Suns were 0-for-5 on Wednesday. The saving grace is the first half ends on Sunday and Hagerstown will get the chance to reload for the second half at 0-0, starting on June 22. West Virginia broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth, beginning with Darren Ford's leadoff double off Suns starter Ryan Meyers. He took third on Lorenzo Cain's single and scored when shortstop Jonathan Schemmel misplayed Angel Salome's grounder for an RBI. It opened the door for Mat Gamel's RBI double and Tony Festa's run-scoring single to take a 5-2 lead. Meyers left after 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks. Meyers helped stake West Virginia to a 2-0 lead in the first with an errant pickoff throw. Meyers walked Ford to open the game and advanced him to third when his pickoff attempt got past first baseman Nick Evans. Salome picked up the RBI with a single to left before taking third on Gamel's single off of Meyers' leg and into left field. Ned Yost grounded to short to score Salome. Hagerstown got a run back off West Virginia starter and winner Derek Miller (7-1) when Hector Pellot drew a one-out walk and stole second. Nick Evans lined a shot at Cain in right field, who slipped and fell, giving Evans a two-out RBI triple. Evans was stranded at third as the Suns moved to within one at 2-1 after one inning. Schemmel put the Suns back in business in the second with a one-out double down the right-field line. He took third on Drew Butera's single and scored on Elvis Cruz's hit to tie it. Joe Holden advanced runners to second and third with two outs on a sacrifice bunt, but Pellot struck out to end the rally. Jim Wladyka relieved Meyers and threw 3 2/3 innings of strong relief to give the Suns a chance to get back into the game. But Hagerstown couldn't crack Miller after the second inning, striking out eight tim es over five innings. The Suns left runners stranded in the fourth and eighth innings. In the eighth, Leivi Ventura reached base on a strikeout and wild pitch, and took third on Evans' double. But Jonathan Sanchez fouled out and Jonel Pacheco struck out to end the threat. The only hit Wladyka allowed came back to haunt him in the ninth. Ryan Crew hit a leadoff double before Wladyka was pulled with one out. Crew took third on an errant pickoff try by Butera from behind the plate and scored on Cain's single off German Marte for the third unearned run allowed by the Suns. Hagerstown's Hector Pellot slides safely into second base as West Virginia's Mike Bell is late with the tag during the first inning of Wednesday night's South Atlantic League game at Municipal Stadium.
