  1. No Corey Hart Friday, after leaving Thursday's game in the 4th. We'll have to keep an eye on that. A tip of the cap to Steve Hammond for a very good debut in the AFL. Maybe he should have been there all along. Wow, great outing for Hammond. Actually colbyjack, Steve debuted last week with a 2.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 BB, 1 K line. So while he pitched out of trouble that game, Friday's line looks very smooth, as he faced the minimum amount of batters through four! Here's the game log for the 2005 6th rounder: Peo Saguaros Bottom 1st -- Chris Young flies out to left fielder Nick Markakis. -- Brendan Harris flies out to center fielder Jeff Salazar. -- Larry Broadway grounds out to first baseman Michael Johnson. Peo Saguaros Bottom 2nd -- Brad Eldred singles on a fly ball to center fielder Jeff Salazar. -- Adam Lind grounds into double play, second baseman Dan Uggla to shortstop Alcides Escobar to first baseman Michael Johnson. Brad Eldred out at 2nd. -- Ryan Zimmerman flies out to right fielder Gary Harris. Peo Saguaros Bottom 3rd -- Neil Walker grounds out, shortstop Alcides Escobar to first baseman Michael Johnson. -- Brandon Moss grounds out, second baseman Dan Uggla to first baseman Michael Johnson. -- Ryan Roberts grounds out, pitcher Steven Hammond to first baseman Michael Johnson. Peo Saguaros Bottom 4th -- Chris Young strikes out swinging. -- Brendan Harris grounds out, third baseman Vinny Rottino to first baseman Michael Johnson. -- Larry Broadway lines out to second baseman Dan Uggla. RHP Brian Wolfe finished up again (Javelinas win, 7-0): Peo Saguaros Bottom 9th -- Chris Young singles on a line drive to left fielder Nick Markakis. -- Brendan Harris grounds into double play, shortstop Alcides Escobar to second baseman Dan Uggla to first baseman Michael Johnson. Chris Young out at 2nd. -- Larry Broadway called out on strikes. Alcides Escobar 2-for-4, now 18-for-52 (.346), no walks, 7 K -- singles on a ground ball to left field, steals 2nd base, then advances to 3rd on throwing error by catcher Neil Walker. -- grounds out to shortstop -- singles on a fly ball to right field -- commits a fielding error, his fifth of the fall -- flies out to right field Vinny Rottino played third base (handled several chances cleanly), went 0-for-4 with a walk, now 5-for-20, four walks, three K -- walks, later scores on a wild pitch -- pops out to catcher in foul territory. -- flies out to center field -- called out on strikes -- grounds out to pitcher I'm sorry, I can't get overly down on the Brewers for what they have done in the AFL. It's a developmental league, not life or death, much like winter leagues. I think a lot of people want to see the top prospects from each team there, and while I agree guys like Eveland, Hardy and Fielder were bad choices to begin with, focusing on that is taking something away from the success guys like Corey Hart, Alcides Escobar, Vinny Rottino and even Brian Wolfe are currently having in the AFL. For every closed door there's a window of opportunity, right? I agree to a point. I don't think we've been so focused on the departures that we haven't given the other guys their proper due. But we're going to make note when roster changes are made, and let's face it, the major league status of the players mentioned makes it news, along with their earlier public statements. Escobar, Rottino, and Hammond's seasons were supposed to end with instructionals. They've helped the Brewers save face, actually. These stats are a couple of days old: All-time batting average record: .292 (2004) 2005 average: .301 All-time worst ERA: 5.32 (2004) 2005 ERA: 5.68 All-time homers: 243 (1997) 2005 homers: 130 (on pace for 219) Note on homers: The record for homers per game is 1.82, set in 2001. This year, balls are going out at the rate of 2.28 per game. All-time runs per game: 12.07 (2004) 2005 RPG: 12.93
  2. LHP Dana Eveland has officially been removed from the AFL roster: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...mp;cid=490 First J.J., then Prince, now Dana -- talk about the best-laid plans going awry... MILB named the mid-season AFL All-Star team today - no Brewers named, no surprise there. The Javelinas (13-7) visit Peoria's other club, the Seguaros (5-15) Friday night, 8:05 PM Central, no audio. The updating box score / game log is here: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...n_peswin_1 Go to the AFL site home page to make use of the Advanced Gameday Feature: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...p?sid=l119
  3. Javelinas win, 8-3. Corey Hart flied out to right field in his only AB. Vinny Rottino hit a two-run double, walked (and scored on an RBI single by Alcides Escobar), was called out on strikes, and grounded into a force out. Escobar flew out to right, hit a line drive single to left, singled on a bunt to third base (later scored), and grounded out to third base. Alcides is 16-for-48 (.333), no walks, but only seven strikeouts. LHP Steve Hammond is your starting pitcher Friday night -- links later on...
  4. Corey Hart pinch-hit for in the 4th, unusual even for an AFL game. Hopefully he's not hurting; Vinny Rottino shuffled over to third base defensively.
  5. The Javelinas (12-7) visit Mesa (9-10) Thursday, 3:05 PM Central, there is audio available today. Audio link: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...p?sid=milb Hart (3B), Rottino (1B) and Escobar (SS) all in the starting lineup. No Dana Eveland again, wouldn't be surprised if he's been shut down for the season, we'll keep an eye out for a formal announcement. 6. David Weiser has updated the "Stuff" page on his site with the very detailed Top 20 lists (both seasonal and all-time) for the Stars. Keep in mind that the Stars were an Oakland affiliate until the Brewers joined them in 1999. www.starsboxscore.com/stuff.htm
  7. RHP Brian Wolfe gave up one run in his inning Wednesday (the Javelinas had their seven-game winning streak snapped by the 8-5 loss): -- Brandon Sing doubles (5) on a line drive to left fielder Val Majewski. -- Kevin Howard singles on a ground ball to shortstop Brandon Fahey. Brandon Sing to 3rd. -- Don Kelly grounds into double play, second baseman Dan Uggla to shortstop Brandon Fahey to first baseman Michael Johnson. Brandon Sing scores. Kevin Howard out at 2nd. -- Kevin Frandsen strikes out swinging. Nashville's Gary Pettis is among those highlighted in this article on AFL managers: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...p;sid=l119
  8. Lots of real estate and financial discussions tucked in the many articles available -- we'll try to link to the Brewer-related quotes and news: From the Tennessean: Not only should the new stadium keep baseball in Nashville, it probably will keep the Brewers tied in to Nashville, as well. "That was a big part of us signing our (player development contract) with the Sounds, so I'm excited for Glenn, for the team and for the city of Nashville," said Scott Martens, Milwaukee's business manager of minor-league operations and player development. "We hope to set up a long-term relationship for years to come. "We had the opportunity to move into a new (Class A) facility in Charleston, W.Va., this past season. To be able to go into a new park, a new clubhouse, a new field, is exciting. And to be able to do it at the Triple-A level is even more exciting. The Sounds drew over 400,000 fans this past year, which is a credit to the city of Nashville ? and to be able to do it in Greer Stadium is even more so." Last season ? the first in a two-year agreement between the Sounds and the Brewers ? resulted in Nashville's first league championship (the Pacific Coast League) since the 1982 team won the Southern League title. The new ballpark, which will have approximately 8,500 fixed seats with flexible seating expected to push the capacity over 12,000, is expected to be ready for the beginning of the 2007 season. "There's plenty of work to be done, but the Sounds are prepared to do that in order to facilitate a 2007 opening," Yaeger said. "Opening day has a lot of appeal. We'll be pushing to open the ballpark on opening day."

  10. Javelinas win twice (now seven in a row), 8-4 and 12-2. Corey Hart played third base in Game One, and was the DH in Game Two. He handled his only chance (ground ball) in Game One. For the day, he was 3-for-8 (singles), three runs scored, one RBI, two K's, and a successful SB in his first attempt of the fall. He has a .968 OPS in 37 AB's. Alcides Escobar played both games at shortstop, and went 2-for 7 (singles), scoring once, striking out once. He made two fielding errors in Game One, doubling his season's total. Escobar has a .697 OPS in 44 AB's (no walks). Escobar hit in the # 2 spot in the lineup in Game Two. Vinny Rottino was the DH in Game One, and played first base in Game Two. He was 1-for-7 (single) with an RBI and a walk and a HBP, striking out once. Vinny's 4-for-13 with a .412 OBP in the early going.
  11. From David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com/ All this off-season inactivity of course gives me much time to work on updating the club record book. Just finished is the new top 20s list........ No club or seasonal records were broken this year, but one came close and some career records could be broken next year........ Callix Crabbe became the first hitter since Angel Escobar in 1989 to record 20 sac hits in a season. Escobar holds the club record with 25. Crabbe finished the season with 20. On the all-time list, Crabbe is 4th........ None of the Stars' pitchers cracked the Top 20 for their seasonal efforts, but Dennis Sarfate, in particular, and Glenn Woolard entered the all-time list......... Sarfate, in his 2nd, and probably final season as a Huntsville Stars pitcher, finished 14th in wins with 16, and tied for 2nd with Stacy Hollins in losses (21). Sarfate also comes in 19th in ERA (3.96), 7th in starts (49), 14th in innings, 17th in hits allowed, 14th in runs and 16th in earned runs allowed, tied for 11th in home runs allowed, 7th in strikeouts and walks, tied for 3rd in hit batters, and tied for 16th in wild pitches.......Woolard broke onto the Top 20 charts in starts, strikeouts (14th), walks (20th), and hit batters. Tony Gwynn is now one of five Huntsville Stars with 1,000+ at-bats in their history. With 1,043, he is 4th behind Jason Wood, Josh Klimek, and Scott Hemond. Scott Brosius, with 1,008, is the only other Stars with 1,000 or more at-bats........ Gwynn is also tied for 7th in games played, 7th in hits, 7th in runs scored, 20th in doubles, tied for 19th in triples with eleven others, tied for 10th in sac hits and sac flies, 9th in walks, 3rd in stolen bases, and 2nd in most times caught stealing. He finished two short of tying Kerwin Moore's career record of 33....... Gwynn is also tied for 15th in total bases....... Brandon Gemoll is now one of only six players with 400 or more total bases and ranks 5th on the all-time list with 412. Jason Wood is the all-time leader with 509........ Brad Nelson, who last year set the club strikeout record that had been held since 1985 by Rob Nelson, is tied for 5th with three others in that category, but Gemoll is 3rd on the list with 231, 45 behind the leader, Steve Howard (Stars '87-88).

  15. Vinny Rottino 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI on Saturday, the only Brewer to see action in the Javelina's 9-4 win (five runs in the 9th, Rottino capped the scoring with an RBI single). 17. MILB.com (link while active, text follows) -- www.minorleaguebaseball.c...p;sid=l119 Javelinas top Saguaros late Hart doubles home winning run in ninth for Javelinas By Eric Justic / MLB.com Corey Hart delivered a walk-off RBI double to send the Javelinas to an 8-7 victory over the visiting Saguaros on Friday. With the score tied, 7-7, in the ninth inning, Padres prospect Michael Johnson worked a leadoff walk against Saguaros reliever Roy Corcoran (0-2) of the Nationals. Gary Harris (Mariners) ran for Johnson and advanced to second on a groundout by Orioles farmhand Nick Markakis. Two batters later, Hart (Brewers) lifted a double to left field. Ryan Zimmerman (Nationals) went 5-for-5 in the loss and scored a pair of runs over the first three innings. He singled and came home on a two-run double by Brendan Harris (Nationals) in a four-run second. In the third, the Saguaros made it 6-2 when Zimmerman singled in Brad Eldred (Pirates) and scored two batters later on an error by third baseman Ian Stewart (Rockies). Eldred led off the inning with his first triple of the season. The Javelinas cut the deficit to 6-5 with three runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by Orioles prospect Val Majewski's two-run single. Stewart atoned for his error later in the game. He scored on an RBI single by Alcides Escobar (Brewers) in the sixth and added an RBI groundout to put the Javelinas ahead, 7-6, in the seventh. 20. Mass, I can't find it in the media guide. What I can find says that "the AFL team with most players with Major League experience: Mesa Solar Sox with 12." Maybe it was that the Brewers had more than the other teams affiliated with the Javelinas combined. That would make more sense....
  21. The Javelinas scored six times in the top of the 10th Thursday night to win, 8-2. Give it up for SS Alcides Escobar, on base three times, plus a sacrifice bunt. He handled all three of his fielding chances cleanly. -- grounds out to second base, leading off the 3rd -- hit by pitch in the 5th, man on first, one out -- sacrifice bunt in the 7th, man on 2nd, none out -- singles on a ground ball to third base in the 9th, man on 1st, two out -- triples on a line drive to right field in the 10th with two out, driving in two, later scored Escobar is now hitting .286 (8-for-26); his triple was his first extra-base hit; zero walks, six K's; teeny-tiny sample, but keeping his head well above water for an 18-year-old...

  23. There is no doubt, and we sensed this right from the start when AFL rosters were first announced, that the Brewers could not have botched things more than they did this year in this process. I'm curious about this statement. I'll give you the Hardy/Escobar swap as a botch, although, at the time the decision was made to send JJ to the AFL, I thought it was sound. Other than that, I'm not sure how things were botched. Stetter got hurt, Fielder's wife has health issues. Could those issues have been seen in advance? As far as Hammond, I'm sure the team wanted to do this as he, by their accounts, didn't pitch much in his college season and had innings to burn. Couple that with the thought that he is on a fast-track to the bigs and it makes sense to try and get him there. I would guess they knew it was a possibility that it would be denied. I don't have the link, but I do remember reading that besides Eveland, Hardy, Hart, and Fielder, there were only something like three players in all of major league baseball who were to report directly from a major league clubhouse to the AFL. So the Brewers basically out-numbered all of the other organizations combined in this regard. Don't quote me on that, but it's close. The Brewers basically chose to take a decidely different tact this year in regards to the AFL. And yes, when you've grown accustomed to Miller Park post-game spreads for a month or two (or even a full season), there will be some "moaning" from players about AFL duty, no matter how discreet that complaining may be. So yes, I think the Brewers got a little too creative for their own good. My own AFL lineup might have looked like this: Corey Hart (for the position work) Vinnie Rottino Adam Heether (a no-brainer) Brad Nelson or Tony Gwynn (yes, return trips for either) RHP Brian Wolfe (wow, by default) LHP Josh Habel? I say by default for Wolfe, only because the options seem so limited, unless you want to ask already "stretched" guys like Taubenheim or Villanueva. Here's what you do. Go to our Player Index (link at top of any page). Use the filter option to look at the Nashville and Huntsville current rosters. It's slim pickings folks, particularly for available pitchers. Oppojack has a point when he says "who" beyond Stetter. The Brewers still didn't play their AFL cards very well, regardless of unusual circumstances.
  24. In a surprise, RHP Derek DeCarlo, the Brewers 9th round pick in 2004 out of Florida International University, has signed paperwork with Milwaukee that places him on their Voluntarily Retired List. The 22-year-old posted an 11-7 record with a 5.33 ERA in his combined Helena (2004) and West Virginia (2005) seasons. Derek DeCarlo's Career Stats: www.thebaseballcube.com/p...arlo.shtml Baseball America listed DeCarlo's 2004 signing bonus at $73,000. The only other Brewer farmhands on the retired list are RHP Tom Wilhelmsen and OF Robbie Deevers. The Brewers retain rights on each player, although each career is likely over. Players who remain on the Brewers' Restricted List (never signed official retirement paperwork) are OF Terry Trofholz (22nd round, 2003), RHP Brian Montalbo (7th round, 2003), OF Joel Rivera (15th round, 2003), and IF Carlos Hereaud (9th round, 2005). Hereaud was scheduled to take part in Instructional League, not sure if he actually attended. You'd expect to see Hereaud in uniform next season, and perhaps we'll see Rivera. Regardless, in only the technical sense, you'll still see these names on the Brewerfan Player Index until the Brewers relinquish their rights. Speaking of which, players removed from the Restricted List and no longer part of the organization are: OF Ryan Gordon, an undrafted free agent out of UNC-Greensboro who never suited up in a pro game for the Brewers LHP Jared Theodorakos (25th round, 2003) RHP Luis Bernal (33rd round, 2004) RHP Victor Arias, a Dominican product who pitched 21.1 innings for the Arizona Rookie squad in 2004 RHP Dany Mosquea, another Dominican who last pitched in Arizona in 2004 RHP Jorge Fermin, a Dominican who made 15 combined appearances with Arizona in 2004 and 2005 Finally, there were two other releases: RHP Carlos Cespedes, who made ten relief appearances for Arizona Rookie in 2005 RHP Nathaniel Villar, yet another young Dominican, he made one appearance with Arizona Rookie This should complete the transaction news for another month or so, unless some minor league free agent signings trickle in. The next update in November should include all the placement news regarding the Rule 5 draft. The Brewerfan Player Index should now accurately represent the current organizational roster.
  25. From Michael Echan/MLB.com: The Javelinas came within two outs of the Arizona Fall League's first no-hitter in 2005 on Wednesday, but lost it in a pinch. Dodgers prospect James Loney broke it up with a pinch-hit one-out homer in the ninth, but Peoria was able to hold on to beat the Phoenix Desert Dogs, 3-1 at the Peoria Sports Complex on Wednesday night. Orioles farmhand Adam Loewen (1-0) pitched five strong innings, striking out six, walking two and got Jarrod Saltalamacchia to bounce into an inning-ending double play in the first. The southpaw also finished his night strong as he retired the last 12 batters he faced. Relievers Ramon Ramirez (Rockies), Andy Mitchell (Orioles) and Rusty Tucker (Padres) each helped keep Phoenix hitless through the next three innings before giving way to Brian Wolfe (Brewers) in the ninth. After Tony Abreu (Dodgers) made the first out of the inning, Loney stepped in for leadoff man Josh Burrus (Braves) and hit the first pitch he saw from Wolfe over the right field fence, ending both the no-hitter and shutout. The Javelinas grabbed the lead back in the third inning when Adam Jones (Mariners) drew a two-out walk and advanced on a balk from Desert Dogs starter Jamie Shields (Devil Rays). Corey Hart (Brewers) brought Jones home in the next at-bat with a line drive single to left. Peoria tacked on two more insurances runs in the sixth on an RBI ground out from Dan Uggla (Diamondbacks) and an RBI single by Nick Markakis (Orioles). Shields (1-1) pitched effectively, despite getting tagged with the loss, tossing five innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out three. Saltalamacchia earned the other Phoenix hit with a two-out bloop single in the ninth. SS Alcides Escobar was 0-for-2 with a sacrifice and a strikeout. Hart finished 1-for-4, played third base, and had only one chance, handling a ground ball on the firt play of the game. The Javelinas travel to Mesa for a 10:05 p.m. ET game against the Solar Sox on Thursday.
