Final: Palm Beach (Cardinals) 4, Brevard County 3 This one hurt with Vero Beach coming to town Monday night... Brevard County Box Score: Lou Palmisano hits his 7th triple, pretty impressive; Tim Dillard did hit two batters and throw a wild pitch, but his K-to-BB numbers remain insane, 118-to-28 in 176.1 IP -- pitching to contact, getting ground balls, extending deep into every game -- he's a pitching coach's dream... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_pbcafx_1 Brevard County Game Log: The Manatees loaded the bases with none out in the 1st and only tallied one; they loaded the bases with one out in the 2nd and again only scored one (thanks to a Cardinal error) -- double plays killed both rallies, that was pretty much your game story right there, although Steve Moss getting caught stealing third base in the 7th was critical -- don't overlook Moss' troubles on the basepaths, only 16-of 28 in SB attempts this season... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_pbcafx_1 -

Final: Kannapolis (White Sox) 9, West Virginia 2 Unfortunately reminiscient of the way this club started the season - ugh! West Virginia Site Game Summary: Power losing streak reaches sixKannapolis, NC ? The Kannapolis Intimidators wasted no time getting started against the West Virginia Power, scoring four runs in the first inning of Sunday afternoon?s game as they went on to beat the Power 9-2, sending the Power to their sixth straight loss. Tom Brice drove in the first run in the first inning with a sacrifice fly. Bernie Gonazlez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate the second run of the inning and Ryan McCarthy knocked in the final two runs on a single. Kannapolis struck again, scoring four times in the bottom of the third. McCarthy knocked in two more runs on a double and Jose De Los Santos drove in the final two on a triple. The Intimidators added to their lead on a solo home run from Josh Hansen in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it a 9-0 game. In the top of the ninth inning, Hasan Rasheed hit his second homer of the year, a solo shot to make it 9-1, and Brendan Katin knocked in Ryan Braun on an RBI single but it was too little and too late for the Power. Adam Russell (8-6) earned the victory, and Derek DeCarlo (6-4) obtained the loss. The Power are 26-27 in the second half after the loss and the Intimidators move to 30-20 with the win. The Power will conclude the series with the Intimidators at FieldCrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis, North Carolina on Monday night. The Power will throw LHP Derek Miller (1-0, 3.86) and Kannapolis will counter with RHP Jack Egbert (9-5, 3.28). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). West Virginia Box Score: 22-year-old RHP Derek DeCarlo was the Brewers 9th-round pick in 2004, he needs to pick up the pace a bit; lefty Greg Kloosterman followed up well, probably pulled from the rotation to avoid the Sally League's all-time loss record -- I believe we read he's one away... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_kanafx_1 West Virginia Game Log: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_kanafx_1 -

Final: Casper (Rockies) 3, Helena 1 Blame the bus driver here -- Casper broadcast indicated that the driver got lost on the way from Idaho Falls to Casper, adding almost three hours to an already tough ride... Helena Independent Record: Helena was not able to bounce back from Casper's early lead as the Rockies went on to a 3-1 win Sunday. An error-filled first inning hurt Helena as the Rockies scored two runs on three errors. Ned Yost's single drove in Mat Gamel in the seventh for Helena's only run. Lefty starter Rafael Lluberes deserved a better fate -- he and RHP's Patrick Ryan and Mathew Kretzschmar combined to allow one earned run. Xavier Cedeno took the win improving to 1-1. Missoula is four games behind Helena in the Northern Division standings after the Osprey took a 7-1 win over Idaho Falls Sunday. The Brewers will meet Casper again today at 7:05 p.m. (8:05 Central) for game two of a four- game series. Helena Box Score: Catcher Bryan Opdyke nails a couple of baserunners; Mat Gamel's defensive lapses at third base continue -- dreadful; Darren Ford's striking out way too often for a top of the order speedster, now at 53 K's in 180 AB's... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...k_casrok_1 Helena Game Log: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...k_casrok_1 -

Final: Arizona Athletics 3, Arizona Brewers 2 No linescore or game log, otherwise box score is intact... Arizona Box Score: Lorenzo Cain and Michael Brantley uncharacteristically go 0-for-8 at the top of the lineup, thus the reason for the low output; best outing of the year for 19-year-old RHP Amaury Rivas, who followed up southpaw Steve Garrison; the A-Crew has lost four in a row to drop from postseason contention... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...k_athrok_1 -

Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Sounds' magic number is now at 11 By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer The Nashville Sounds finally managed to cut into their magic number again, defeating visiting Oklahoma 4-0 last night. With the victory and Omaha's 9-1 loss to New Orleans, the Sounds reduced their magic number ? any combination of Nashville wins and Omaha losses ? for clinching the Pacific Coast League American North division title to 11. The win also stopped a three-game losing streak for the Sounds. Nashville starter Gary Glover recorded his longest outing of the season, scattering four hits ? including a two-out triple by Gerald Laird in the second inning ?over seven shutout innings. "The first couple of innings were tough, but I got through that and I was a little more relaxed," said Glover, who has won his last three decisions. "Hopefully this gets us back on a roll. We were really hot for the majority of the road trip, but now we've got Omaha and Memphis breathing on our necks." The Sounds' offense gave Glover all the support he'd ultimately need when Ryan Knox doubled with two out in the second inning to score Warren Morris. Nashville added runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to improve to 9-4 against the RedHawks this season. Knox, Dave Krynzel and Mike Rivera each had multi-hit games in Nashville's 12-hit attack. No knuckling under: Former Montgomery Bell Academy and UT standout R.A. Dickey has converted to the knuckleball and came into last night with a 4-1 record and a 6.61 ERA in five starts for Oklahoma since making the switch. "I had always thrown one, but it had been a hard one," Dickey said after allowing all four runs in 6+ innings last night and taking the loss. "I only threw it eight or 10 times a game, but I had some success with it. Now, instead of eight or 10 times I'll throw it 80 times out of 100. I'm learning about it." Spinning turnstiles: With the season-high announced crowd of 12,644 last night, the Sounds have drawn 384,941 for 62 dates ? an average of 6,209. What they said: "That (statistic) can be deceiving at times. If you win 4-0, you're doing something right." ? Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas, after his team went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position to drop to .187 (14-for-75) over last nine games. Link while active, text follows: www.floridatoday.com/apps...061/SPORTS Reliever role suits Barnes Scott Brown, Florida Today The baseball season hardly got off to a stellar start for pitcher Justin Barnes. The former Merritt Island High standout stayed behind in extended spring training to work on some mechanical issues. Barnes then grudgingly accepted a move to the bullpen when he joined the low Class A West Virginia Power. The right-hander, however, has gone from a reluctant reliever to a receptive one, and it's easy to see why. Going into Saturday, Barnes had posted an 8-1 record with a 2.98 ERA in 25 games. FLORIDA TODAY's 2001 All-Space Coast Baseball Player of the Year had also struck out 59 batters in 60 1/3 innings. "I'm really happy with how things are going," Barnes said earlier this week. "I've been able to really bear down and get the job done and execute." Not that going from starting to exclusively relieving -- he did both for two different teams last season -- hasn't been an adjustment for Barnes. When he arrives at the ballpark, Barnes checks the lineup card posted in the clubhouse. If it says he is available to pitch, Barnes may get in the game. Or he may not. Such is the life of a relief pitcher: perpetually on call, but not always needed. The other adjustment Barnes had to make, going from starter to reliever, was pitching multiple days in a row instead of every fifth day. Barnes, who turns 23 today, has kept his arm strong by throwing almost every day on his own. It's not intense and is not even off a mound -- he usually plays catch with teammates for 10 or 15 minutes -- but it apparently is working. Two of Barnes' wins came after he pitched seven and six innings out of the bullpen. The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder doesn't blow away hitters with his fastball. He does throw a two-seam fastball that sinks, as well as a cut fastball that runs in on left-handed hitters and away from righties. Barnes, who also throws a curveball and a changeup, is just a step below the Brevard County Manatees, the Brewers' high Class A affiliate in Viera. But this late in the season, he does not see himself making a homecoming of sorts. He could, however, open next season with the Manatees. While that is uncertain, so too is whether the Brewers see Barnes' long-term future as a starting pitcher or a reliever. "You never know," Barnes said, "but right now I'm pretty comfortable what I'm doing."

From Scott Brown at Florida Today: No rest for Fielder Prince Fielder won't get much time to reflect on a season in which he made his big-league debut. Fielder, the former Florida Air Academy and Eau Gallie High star, is one of six players the Brewers will send to the Arizona Fall League. The six teams that make up the league are flush with the game's top prospects, though Fielder may soon shed that label. The first baseman currently is in his second stint this season with the Brewers, and he figures to stay with the big club the rest of the season since Milwaukee is not in the wild-card hunt (Scott's opinion http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ) Fielder has hit at every level he's played in the Brewers' organization. He had 28 homers and 86 RBI in just 378 at-bats for Milwaukee's Triple-A team in Nashville. Going into Saturday, he had batted 29 times for Milwaukee, hitting .300 with a homer and seven RBI. "We're real happy where he is," said Reid Nichols, Milwaukee's special assistant to the general manager for player development. "He's a breath away from being an everyday big-league player." -

Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 Stars notebook (through Friday's game) Mark McCarter and Paul Gattis Huntsville Times Covering the bases The Nashville Sounds are cruising toward a playoff spot in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League. The Brevard County Manatees are fighting for a playoff spot in the Single-A Florida State League. And the Huntsville Stars will be paying for it. They may continue to surrender players to Triple-A, or get no help from below. The Stars are two men short on their roster, and likely won't get any immediate help. Pitcher Carlos Villaneuva, who was to have started Saturday at Tennessee, was promoted this week from Single-A, something that probably didn't sit well in Brevard County. However, as Stars manager Don Money said, "It was a necessity.'' ... Dennis Sarfate's sore elbow left the roster spot vacant. His return this season is questionable. The Stars have only one pitcher remaining from the rotation who started the season, Glenn Woolard. ... Between being short-handed, having some aborted starts because of weather and having pitchers even now with limited pitch counts, it's been tough to find enough arms. "I don't know who'll I start next. You, him, maybe that guy right there,'' Money said, pointing to a tourist walking through the Stars' hotel lobby behind a luggage cart. ... The Stars' "emergency'' pitcher is infielder Nelson Castro, who threw two innings last week and allowed four hits and three earned runs, though he did strike out three in 1 1/3 innings. Nic Slack, a pitcher at Brevard County, was suspended 15 games for violating baseball's drug policy and is out for the season. Major League Baseball confirmed to Florida Today that he tested positive for steroids. Asked how organizations will react to such players, Money said, "I don't know. This is all right now still in its infancy. I don't know if they'll be putting the hammer down or not.'' ... One thing Milwaukee does put the hammer down about: Its players are prohibited from sliding headfirst. Around the league Two of the hottest teams in the Southern League have finally cooled off ever so slightly. Birmingham had its 10-game winning streak snapped Friday in a 3-2 loss to Mobile. The BayBears scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Barons pitcher Paulino Reynoso in the seventh inning. Meanwhile, Jacksonville had its 12-game winning streak end Thursday in a 7-6 loss to Mississippi. But the Suns rebounded Friday with a 6-2 win over the Braves. The Barons lead the Suns by 1 1/2 games entering Saturday's games. ... Birmingham has a tough break in this pennant race. The Barons are in the midst of a six-game series in three days at Mobile, forced by the July postponements in the wake of Hurricane Dennis. ... Tennessee committed five errors in one inning in a Thursday loss to Montgomery. ... Birmingham's Chris Young (.444, three homers, seven runs scored) and Jacksonville's Edwin Jackson (no earned runs in 15 innings) are the most recent Southern League player and pitcher of the week, respectively. ... Jackson was on the fast track in the Los Angeles organization and even made his big league debut in 2003 on his 20th birthday, beating Randy Johnson. However, he was 3-7 with an 8.62 ERA at Triple-A Las Vegas this season before his demotion. ... West Tenn shortstop Buck Coats ended a string of 369 at-bats without a homer when he went deep Wednesday. ... Ex-Star Johnny Raburn got a shock this week when he got to his truck after a game. According to The Montgomery Advertiser, some playful off-duty Montgomery police knew it was a player's vehicle that was parked ostensibly illegally atop a sewage drain. So they blocked the truck off with police tape and a placed a biohazard sign on it. Brewings Triple-A Nashville Sounds (69-58, first place in Pacific Coast League American Division): INF Tony Zuniga, who began the season with the Stars, is hitting .337 with seven homers, 38 RBIs. Single-A Brevard County Manatees (29-25, third in Florida State East Division this half): P Tim Dillard 11-9, 2.39 ERA. Single-A West Virginia Power (26-25, third in South Atlantic League Northern Division this half): INF Hernan Iribarren .300, 46 RBIs Rookie League Helena Brewers (14-4, first in second half in Pioneer League): P William Inman 5-0, 2.10 ERA. On deck The Stars end a three-game series at Tennessee this afternoon, then return for an eight-game series against Mobile and Tennessee, beginning Monday. The first game is Family Fun Night, with four tickets, four hot dogs and four drinks for $40. -

Huntsville Site Game Summary: Bass Beats Hometown TeamMatt Morgan doubled in three runs to back the solid pitching of Adam Bass in Tennessee?s 9-4 win over Hunstville Saturday night in the middle game of a three-game set at Smokies Park. The Smokies improved to 24-30 in the second half, while the Stars dropped to 22-32 in the second half and fell for a seventh time in nine games on the current road trip. The Stars have lost 12 of their last 15 games and dropped to 25-39 away from home, where they will return on Monday night. Jamie D?Antona and Jerry Gil worked one-out walks against Carlos Villanueva, making his double-A debut, and both scored when Morgan followed with a double to center field. Tony Gwynn, Jr. moved to his left to try to cut the ball off but could not, as it rolled past him all the way to the wall, allowing both runners to cross the plate. Villanueva issued back-to-back one-out walks in the fourth but struck out Jon Zeringue and Smokies? pitcher Adam Bass to end the frame. Villanueva would not find his way out of trouble in the fifth after Chris Carter belted a two-run home run, his fifth with Tennessee, on to the grassy berm area in right field to push the home team?s lead to 4-1. Villanueva was knocked out of the game when D?Antona followed with a double and was replaced by Gerrit Simpson, who had tossed 10 scoreless innings in five outings since joining the Stars. Pinch-hitter Adam Haley bounced his first pitch into right field for a base hit to score D?Antona and then came around to score when Morgan doubled down the right field line on the next Simpson offering to make it 6-1. Zeringue then capped the rally with a single to score Morgan. Bass ran into difficulty in the sixth inning and gave up a sacrifice fly to Enrique Cruz, his first of the year, and a run-scoring single to Brandon Gemoll to cut the lead to 7-3. The right-hander earned his fifth win of the year after going six innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking out seven. Kennard Bibbs walked with two outs and moved to third base on a single by Vinny Rottino with two outs in the seventh that chased Pete Sikaras from the game. Bill White, a left-handed hurler, was brought on to face lefty-swinging Brad Nelson, who doubled to left field on a 1-0 pitch to chase home Bibbs to cut the lead to 7-4. However, Rottino was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the frame and the Stars could not muster any offense over the next two innings against White and Casey Daigle. Dan Uggla singled home two runs in the eighth inning to extend the lead to 9-4 and push his league-leading runs batted in total to 84. The series and road trip conclude Sunday afternoon with right-hander Glenn Woolard taking the hill for the Stars against Smokies? left-hander Clint Goocher. Coverage gets underway at 3:45 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. -

Final: Nashville 4, Oklahoma (Rangers) 0 Nashville Site Game Summary: NASHVILLE ? Starting pitcher Gary Glover combined with a pair of relievers to post a four-hitter and lead the Nashville Sounds to a 4-0 victory over the Oklahoma RedHawks on Saturday evening in front of a season-high crowd of 12,644 fans at Greer Stadium. With its third shutout victory of the year, Nashville (70-58) snapped a three-game skid and increased its lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division to six games over second-place Omaha, which lost against New Orleans. The Sounds ? who reached the 70-win plateau for the 18th time in franchise history ? have won 15 of their last 16 series openers and improved to 9-4 on the season against the RedHawks, who currently lead the PCL American South Division and could serve as Nashville?s first-round playoff opponent. Left fielder Ryan Knox (2-for-3) gave the Sounds a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when he plated Warren Morris with a two-out RBI double to left-center off Oklahoma starter R.A. Dickey. AUDIO: Ryan Knox's RBI Double www.nashvillesounds.com/a...208-20.mp3 Rehabbing third baseman Jeff Cirillo doubled the Nashville advantage in the fifth when his groundout scored Trent Durrington from third base. Knox registered his second RBI of the night in the sixth, driving in Tony Zuniga with a two-out RBI single to left against Dickey, and Nashville improved its lead to 4-0 in the seventh when Dave Kryznel scooted home on a Dickey wild pitch. Krynzel led Nashville batters with a 3-for-3 evening, extending his hitting streak to an active team-best five games. The outfielder is batting a solid .352 (25-for-71) over his last 19 contests. Glover (6-2) earned his third consecutive victory by tossing seven scoreless frames, allowing only four hits while striking out five batters. Dickey (7-6), a Nashville native, drew the loss in front of his hometown crowd, after surrendering four runs on 10 hits over his 6 2/3-inning, 126-pitch effort. The teams continue their series with a 6 p.m. meeting on Sunday evening at Greer. Right-hander Mike Meyers (6-4, 4.58) mans the bump for the Sounds and will be opposed by RedHawks southpaw Derek Lee (4-2, 4.91), a former Brewers farmhand.
